Everything was going right for the Nebraska Volleyball team in its sweep of No. 12 Purdue on Wednesday night that coach John Cook thinks the Huskers have an ESPN ”Sports Centre” play of the night, despite there being a lot of luck involved in their eventual win.
The lucky moment came in the third set, Nebraska won a rally in which Purdue’s serve caromed off the top of the net, onto the back of Kelsey Fien’s head before bouncing off the KNEE of a diving Kadie Rolfzen. This led to Mary Pollmiller being able to punch the ball over the net, eventually leading to Nebraska winning the rally and taking them to a 15-13 lead!
Some times it’s your night, other times it someone else’s and tonight was Nebraska’s Night.

The play came in 7th on the nightly top 10 list and the athletic department made sure that it got the deserved attention by the ESPN Officials. Dubbed “A one-in-a-million” by Coach Cook, he went on to say “It’s better than some of the hockey goals we have to watch in the top 10.” Probably a quote showing his passion for his team and his sport.

8,045 fans saw the close Nebraskan Victory, eventually finishing in 3 sets at 25-21, 25-22, 25-20, there was only 13 points, total, between one team of the other. With each and every play coming into its own as a match defining point.
The win has allowed Nebraska to move into a tie breaker situation with Purdue for fourth place in the Big Ten Standings, with Nebraska being able to continue building their momentum with four-match home stand!

I don’t mean to make it sound like a resounding victory for Huskers, in fact Purdue made it difficult for the eventual leaders early. Their 6-foot-4 hitter and Big Ten kill leader Annie Drews made it very difficult for the Huskers early but was eventually overcome by the team’s training and preparation for the Big Hitter earlier that week. The reason she is so difficult to compensate for is because as a lefty her hits come in from a different angle to what the team is used to across the board.
A final word from the Huskers Coach, “This is the best effort of the year of our players following a game plan and staying with what we trained,” We all wish Huskers the best of luck in their future ventures, and will keep you updated on the Big Tens games and performances!
