As reported by Foot Mercato, PSG are now confident over signing Inter Milan defender Milan Škriniar this summer transfer window.

The Slovakian defender is PSG’s main target to strengthen their defence this off-season and the Paris club believes the deal for the 27-year-old can be closed relatively quickly despite reports from Italy initially suggesting that the player was keen to stay at Inter Milan who outbid PSG’s first salary offer earlier this season – but PSG have succeeded in convincing the player otherwise. 

Škriniar’s arrival could weaken the position of Presnel Kimpembe or Sergio Ramos at PSG, although any new coach could yet favour three central defenders which would minimise the impact of Škriniar’s signing despite Kimpembe seeking assurances from the club’s hiercahy over his position.

Inter were reported to have turned down a €50m offer from PSG for Škriniar last week with the Nerazzurri wanting €80m. Škriniar sees his contract expire at the end of next season and, although extension talks had been opened with the 2020/21 Serie A title winners, the arrival of PSG at the table has now changed the situation.

Following the expiry of his contract at Stade Brestois, Dénys Bain (29) has joined newly-promoted Ligue 1 side, AJ Auxerre, on a one-year deal with an option for a further year. 

The former Le Havre and LB Châteauroux centre-back, who has racked up over 180 Ligue 2 appearances, moved to Brest on a transfer in 2019. Last season, however, he only made 2 Ligue 1 appearances for the club. 

Overall at Brest, he made 17 Ligue 1 appearances and scored once. His time at the club was, however, disrupted by a ligament rupture, which sidelined him for a significant portion of his contract at Brest.

Bain is Auxerre’s second free transfer window following the signature of Youssouf M’Changama (31), who had looked all set to join Nantes before the deal fell through late on. Following last season’s promotion, Auxerre will play in Ligue 1 for the first time next season since the 2011/12 season. 

 

Torino have announced the loan signing of Nemnaja Radonjić (26) for the upcoming 2022/23 season. The club also revealed in a press release that the deal includes an obligation to purchase the Serbian international winger. 

Radonjić has spent the last season-and-a-half away from the Orange Vélodrome. Firstly at Hertha Berlin, where in half a season he made 12 appearances and scored once, and then, less successfully, at Benfica last season, where he made only six appearances without finding the net. 

The obligation to buy the winger, capped 35 times by his national side, is contingent upon the “fulfillment of certain conditions.” 

Speaking to the club’s channel, he reveals the influence of Torino midfielder and international team-mate Sasa Lukić (25) in tempting him to the club. “Lukić told me great things about the club every day, about the good people around the club. I know it’s a great club, with a great fanbase.”

Foot Mercato are reporting that Hugo Ekitike (20) is dreaming of a move to PSG, whilst the hierarchy is in agreement on the Reims striker’s profile. 

Newcastle have long since had an agreement with Reims for the transfer of the France U20 international, according to RMC.  The fee agreed is thought to be around €36m plus an extra €10m in bonuses. However, as later reported by RMC, the player then stalled on the deal as PSG entered the picture, despite the fee between Newcastle and Reims being agreed and a contract agreement also being reached. 

PSG are yet to make an offer, but crucially, all of the key players within the club’s hierarchy are in agreement on a deal for Ekitike. Nasser Al-Kehlaïfi, Luis Campos and Antero Henrique have all “validated the profile” of the Reims striker, who scored 10 goals in 23 Ligue 1 appearances last season. 

However, PSG are – at present – not willing to meet Newcastle’s offer for the player. The player is hoping that the Ligue 1 champions’ interest manifests itself in a bid. Rather than joining Newcastle, Ekitike has not ruled out remaining at Reims for a few extra months to prove himself worthy of the heft fee offered by Newcastle earlier in the summer.

As reported by L’Équipe, PSG are planning on building two elevens of similar quality for what will be a hectic season with the World Cup dropped in the middle to break the campaign into two intensive halves.

A source at the club told the sports daily that “what they want to do is build a squad with, ideally, two elevens of almost equivalent quality” after it was revealed yesterday that new coach Christophe Galtier, supported by new sporting director Luis Campos, is looking to cut the squad to between 21 and 23 senior players, excluding youngsters. That’s despite director Antero Henrique being handed a list of 11 players to sell before the end of the window.

Galtier is looking to implement a similarly intensive pre-season training regime to Mauricio Pochettino’s of last summer with 15 league games and six Champions League groups stage games to come before November’s World Cup in Qatar. However, the period just after the World Cup will see more rotation as the club fears tiredness and injuries, meaning many of PSG’s younger players have been told to prepare themselves for more game time around Christmas.

Alfa Romeo charger Zhou Guanyu says Formula 1’s popularity continues to grow in China despite the country’s successive race cancellations due to the Covid pandemic.

Formula 1, which last raced in China in 2019, was initially scheduled to return to Shanghai this week. But last December, after assessing Covid transmission rates in the country, FOM along with the FIA opted to scrap the event once again from Grand Prix racing’s calendar.

Rather than relaxing restrictions last year, Chinese authorities deployed snap lockdowns and contact tracing, but that approach only served to frustrate residents who took to the streets to protest their governments firm grip on their daily lives all the while Covid cases reached all-time highs.

Zhou – China’s first F1 driver who began his career at the top echelon of motorsport in 2022 with Alfa – has therefore yet to enjoy the special experience of racing on home soil.

The 23-year-old admitted to being disappointed by his home race’s successive cancellations, but the Alfa charger says he will bide his time.

“I’m disappointed but I kind of saw this coming because of the restrictions, we didn’t open the border early enough,” Zhou told Sky Sports. “So when we had the race scheduled for April, I knew everything was too tight.

“I saw it coming but I don’t feel too bad because I feel like the home race will come, it’s just a matter of time.”

Since its inception in 2004, the Chinese Grand Prix has been an important race for F1. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, the country is a huge potential market for the sport .

The Chinese government has also recognized the economic and social benefits of hosting international sporting events like Formula 1 races, and has actively supported the development of the sport in the country.

Finally, Zhou’s emergence as a young talent has acted as a major catalyst to further boost China’s interest in F1.

“I have no doubts all the tickets will be sold out really quickly, and that it will be packed with people around the whole circuit,” Zhou said, when asked about F1’s return to Shanghai, likely in 2024.

“I’ve felt the popularity improve growing up, recent years, especially the last few years since I became an F1 driver.

“There are a lot of people who just want to go on a track day, driving themselves, and are also interested in watching races – so it’s nice to see that.”

Zhou reckoned that F1’s return to China will offer the opportunity for a new contingent of younger fans to discover the sport.

“I think the most important part, the next big step, will be having the home race so that people newly interested in Formula 1 can actually experience that themselves and they can really feel the impact and energy of the sport,” he concluded.

Cheslin Kolbe will play his first test at fullback when he makes a return to the South Africa team against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.Kolbe, better known for runs down the wing, suffered a broken jaw against Wales in July and returns in a surprise switch by the Springboks, who start the first of four November internationals in Europe.Kolbe replaces Willie le Roux from the side that beat Argentina 38-21 in the Rugby Championship in September. As reported by L’Équipe, Bundesliga club Freiburg are targeting Marseille’s Senegalese international striker Bamba Dieng this transfer window.

The Bundesliga outfit have contacted the French side over the 22-year-old forward who has become a prominent part of the first team squad at OM over the last 18 months while Freiburg had previously been in contact with the player directly over a transfer earlier in the year too, say the sports daily.

However, a deal is still a long way off as the two clubs remain far apart on their respective valuations of the striker who managed seven goals and three assists in Ligue 1 last season. Marseille are looking for between €12m and €15m to allow the young forward to leave but the German side have only informally suggested a potential €8m offer.

Dieng, who is reportedly keen to remain at OM this coming season with two years left on his current contract, saw significant interest in January too. Dieng turned down an offer from Fenerbahçe on deadline day while Newcastle, Burnley and Brighton were all also pushing to sign the striker.

France wing Damian Penaud will depart Clermont at the end of the season to join Top 14 rivals Bordeaux-Begles, it was announced on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old, who has been outstanding this year for both club and country, is a legend of Les Jaunards and will be sorely missed by their loyal supporters.

But the wing has decided it is time for a move and leaves to join UBB ahead of 2023/24, with Bordeaux getting a player who looks at the peak of his powers.

Contract runs until 2026

Penaud will join Bordeaux-Begles on a contract which runs until 2026 as he leaves Clermont, a team the evasive finisher joined back in 2014 at youth level.

He has scored 52 tries for Les Jaunards since making his senior debut in 2015 and became a fan favourite and admired across Europe for his silky running.

As mentioned, Penaud was in fine form for Les Bleus in 2022, as he scored eight tries in the calendar year, impressing with his ability to glide past defenders.

Santiago Cordero to depart?

With Penaud’s pending arrival, Argentina international Santiago Cordero could leave Bordeaux-Begles, with his contract set to expire at the end of 2022/23.

There has also been ongoing rumours around the future of Bristol centre Semi Radradra, with a possible return to Bordeaux being rumoured in France’s press.

Radradra impressed for the Bears in Tuesday’s victory over Harlequins in the Premiership as the Fijian powerhouse continues his comeback from a knee injury.
