For the first time in its history, the European Coatings Show Conference took place virtually on September 13 and 14. The event provided an extensive and varied programme and created exchanges between the over 500 participants, who joined from all over the globe.

This year, the ECS Conference looked very different. Instead of the usual setting in the conference centre in Nuremberg, this year the attendees participated from their homes or offices.

Keynote focused on SDGs

As usual, the conference started with the Plenary Session. After a welcome address from European Coatings, the participants were treated to a keynote speech, which was given by Joost Broeders, Technical Director of Baril Coatings in the Netherlands. He gave a presentation entitled “Living in challenging and interesting times as paint chemists – how SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and true value impact reporting give guidance”.

Broeders (picture on the left) started out with an impressive graphic on the Earth Overshot Day, underlining that the day, where the demand for resources exceeds what Earth can naturally regenerate within a year, is progressing every year, therefore demonstrating the need that a drastic change is needed. He then listed some of the initiatives, tackling these issues, such as of course the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) by the United Nations as well as the Green Deal by the European Commission. These goals of course influence the paints and coatings industry in a great extent.

Broeders then proceeded to give some examples on how Baril Coatings is implanting change and the SDGs. The company, who has put an emphasis on sustainability for around 20 years, for instance uses solar panels as well as wind energy for their energy supply, utilises electric cars and puts a great emphasis on recycling and reducing plastic packaging and training internally as well as external clients. The prize went to Dr Partha Majumdar of Dow Coating Materials, USA, for his paper: “Novel formulation optimization using Big Data, modeling, and predictive tools”. “My team at Dow and I are honoured to receive this prestigious award”, said Majumdar, who had joined the plenary even though his local time in the U.S. was 3 am in the morning.

The jury was convinced by the forward-looking focus on digitization, one of today’s megatrends, the topic of advanced data analytics and machine learning. In addition to a sculpture, there was a prize money of 2000 Euros, which will be donated to a charity as Majumdar could not accept the money.

Majumdar also presented his findings in the digitization session which took part in the morning. The other morning sessions also included the EU-project Decoat, pigments, powder coatings as well as automotive coatings.

In the afternoon, sessions on printing inks, functional and smart coatings, adhesives and sealants as well as on architectural coatings and the projects CHOPIN and Antisoil followed.

Many topics in the focus

The second day of the conference also featured a wide variety of topics. The conference started off in the morning with the sessions construction chemicals, wood coatings, radiation curing, water-borne coatings and protective coatings 1. In the afternoon, the topics bio-based coatings, polyurethanes, testing and measuring, novel materials and protective coatings II were in the focus.

As on the first day, the Match Making Carousel, which brought together participants with the same interests in short video conference, was very popular.

The November issue of the European Coatings Journal is out. It features a full package on functional coatings: a market report, a product overview and expert interviews.

Medium porosity hair is often described as “normal,” but what makes hair normal and what will help it thrive?

If your hair quickly shifts from glossy and fabulous to rough and dehydrated, you might be working with medium porosity hair. To help you understand more about your hair structure, VEGAMOUR consulted the experts and dove into the research. What Is Medium-Porosity Hair?

To understand what medium-porosity hair is, it can be helpful to first understand what low- and high-porosity hair is. Low-porosity hair has tightly packed cuticles that can make it hard for the hair to absorb moisture. High porosity hair holds moisture briefly, but hair strands struggle to retain moisture for long because of the loose cuticles. As you would expect, medium porosity hair is somewhere in the middle. Hair cuticles aren’t too close together or far apart, making it easier for strands to retain moisture. This cuticle layer structure means natural hair can hold moisture for a good amount of time.

What Is a Hair Cuticle?

The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair shaft that is comprised of dead cells, which serve as a protector for each hair strand. If you were to look at a strand of your hair under a microscope, it would appear scaly because the individual cells of the cuticle overlap like slates on a rooftop.

Certified and award-winning dermatologist Dr. Alpana Mohta MBBS, M.D., DNB said, “If your cuticle is somewhere in between raised and flat, your hair is considered to be medium porosity. This means that the cells are moderately spaced, making it somewhat easy for moisture and oil to enter. Medium porosity hair can be prone to tangles and frizz but not as much as high porosity hair.”

How To Recognize Medium-Porosity Hair

Hair with a medium porosity is often referred to as normal porosity hair and holds moisture at a healthy level. Some characteristics associated with medium porosity hair include the following:

• Not moisture resistant
• Retains moisture from liquid-based products
• Gets wet easily
• Air drys easily
• Can hold a curl pattern and styled waves
• Slightly raised cuticles
• Easy to color

Test Your Hair’s Porosity Type

If you’re unsure of your hair’s porosity type, here’s an easy way to find out:

1. Fill a clear glass with water. This will help you see how well your hair absorbs or retains moisture.
2. Pick out a couple of strands. Drop the hairs in the water and see how they react. Gather strands from different parts of the head if you sport a curl pattern to truly know what you’re dealing with.
3. Watch the hair react. If your hair sinks to the bottom fast, then you likely have high porosity hair. If it floats somewhere in the middle, you’ll likely have medium porosity hair, and if it bobs around the surface, you have low porosity hair.

The more you know about your strands, the better you’ll be able to care for them. Hair damage isn’t always apparent, and it’s not always easy to know why it’s happening, so the more you know, the better you can care for your hair!

How Does Hair Become Porous?

Problems with medium porosity hair are likely to arise from external factors such as chemical treatments or too much protein. It’s a delicate balance! Highly porous hair can result from heat styling and damaging heat treatments. Every hair type will benefit from styling products that don’t negatively impact hair health or encourage product buildup at the scalp. Low-porosity hair can look limp and lifeless, and hair with medium porosity can, at times, also benefit from a volumizing approach.
