Olivier Giroud: “I have been told that Vardy wants to join us.”

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud confirmed to Sky Sports last night that he had been told that Jamie Vardy wanted to join Arsenal.

“I have been told that Jamie wants to join us, this is very good news for us. I think we can be complementary, that is all I can say and he is a fantastic player, so yeah. It is good news for us.”

Would it require a change in formation for you and Jamie to play together?

“Obviously! 4-4-2. No I don’t know but as I said in the past I am happy with competition. We have always had fantastic strikers at Arsenal and I want the best for this club so hopefully he is going to help us to win this title.”

Recently departed from PSG manager Laurent Blanc’s agent Jean Pierre Bernès has spoken to Europe 1 about claims that his client could be interested in taking over as the next manager of the England national team.

Bernès had the following to say:

“Laurent Blanc at the head of the English national team? We have not at all thought about that. For the moment, he is on holiday. We will see for his future. We are not going to do something completely random, we have never done things like that. We will see what presents itself. We are not going to take work for the sake of working.”

Speaking to Canal + this evening, Aulas discussed the French international’s future:

“Ben Arfa, it is a question of passion. He is close to our desire, our enthusiasm, to our fans. I think that he really wants to join Lyon. If he does not come, it will be for reasons that have nothing to do with passion. I believe that it is more Leicester City in terms of the direction he is heading. That is what people have told me who spoke to him on the phone this afternoon.”

A full report on Ben Arfa’s future to follow this evening.

Arsenal threaten to derail Djibril Sidibé’s transfer to AS Monaco

According to our colleagues at L’Équipe, Premier League side Arsenal are threatening to derail 23 year old full-back Djibril Sidibé’s move to AS Monaco.

Lille and Monaco had reached an agreement in principle for a deal worth €15m, including Rony Lopes going the other way on loan for the forthcoming campaign, with just small details left to fix including the size of the sell-on fee.

However, in recent hours, Arsenal have concretely approached the player’s entourage concerning the possibility of a move. Arsène Wenger has made this situation a priority.

Now Arsenal and Monaco wait for the final word from the player. At present, he appears most likely to still be set to join AS Monaco, and, honestly, there is a possibility that concerned individuals have planted this story simply to expedite wage discussions between Monaco and the player…

Why Aymeric Laporte rejected Manchester City

L’Équipe have included an article in their daily paper this morning outlining why French youth international Aymeric Laporte ended up signing a contract extension with Athletic Bilbao rather than joining Manchester City earlier on in the window.

Manchester City had agreed to pay the player’s €50m release clause, so what went wrong?

Barcelona approached the player first, but the Catalan club decided that at €50m he was too expensive and signed Umtiti instead.

Then came Bayern Munich, concretely positioning themselves in the race, but never acting on their interest.

Laporte was one of Pep Guardiola’s priorities from the moment he accepted the Manchester City job, wanting to align Laporte with John Stones at the heart of a new look Citizens defence.

Everything seemed in order, Manchester City informed Athletic Bilbao of their intention to pay the player’s €50m release clause, offering Laporte a contract worth between €7.5m to €8m a year net. Quite the improvement on the €2.5m a year that Laporte was reaching at the time.

With his new Bilbao extension, Laporte moved to €4.5m/€5m a year net, which is still nothing in comparison to what City were offering him.

Laporte decided that this was good enough, opting for stability and being at the heart of the Bilbao project in order to best secure his continued progression.

Arsenal will persist for Alexandre Lacazette

According to today’s edition of L’Équipe, Arsenal have no intention of letting up on their pursuit of Alexandre Lacazette, and will bid again if their imminent, second, €40m offer for the player fails.

Alexandre Lacazette has asked Lyon to leave, but OL are standing firm.

Lyon President Jean Michel Aulas had the following to say to the paper:

“Arsenal have not come back and will not come back. Nobody will be leaving Lyon save Rachid Ghezzal. If he has an offer. Which I doubt.”

Alexandre Lacazette is also PSG’s number one target in attack, but Les Parisiens are weary of overpaying for the French striker.

Lyon do not have a preference to sell to Arsenal more than PSG, on the contrary. They do not care because in their mind he is not going anywhere.

It is important to note that West Ham had a €52m offer rejected for the player earlier on doing this summer transfer window.

Arsenal’s initial €35m proposal was also turned down.
