As reported by RMC, Zinedine Zidane’s right-hand man and assistant coach David Bettoni has told Marca in Spain that Zidane remains on sabbatical amid reported PSG interest. When asked about Zidane future, Bettoni said:

“I don’t know, I haven’t really talked about his next destination. He said he was going to take a year’s sabbatical. I know Zizou very well and he doesn’t think like that. I know he’s with his family and when he’s ready he’ll listen to offers and we’ll see who wants to sign him. I think he’s open to anything and he’ll decide if the club is right for him, if there’s something he doesn’t like and if it is competitive. There’re a lot of factors and we’ll see at the end of the season where he goes, if he is coaching.”

PSG sporting director Leonardo has recently denied approaching any prospective coach.

 

As reported by RMC, PSG’s third-choice goalkeeper, Sergio Rico (28), is close to joining La Liga side Real Mallorca.

The two clubs are discussing a loan move without an option to buy but Mallorca would need to cover part of Rico’s €200,000 monthly wage. The agreement is yet to be completely settled but things are progressing say RMC.

Not even registered for Champions League games and only making one appearance so far this season, Rico was also enquired for by Saint-Étienne this month before Les Verts moved on to Angers keeper Paul Bernardoni.

L’Équipe report tonight that Nice are on the lookout for a signing on the wing this winter, and have identified Tottenham Hotspur’s Bryan Gil and Anderlecht’s Francis Amuzu as targets.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, who arrived in North London from Sevilla last summer, has seen a lack of playing time in the Premier League, with Nice looking into potentially taking him on loan.

The Belgian, a former youth international, is also a target although no offer as of yet has come through. Les Aiglons are said to have a third target, although their name has not filtered through yet.

As reported by Ouest France, Lorient centre-back Thomas Fontaine is seeing significant interest from Ligue 2 strugglers Nancy.

Since joining FCL in 2019 the Madagascar defender has only played 26 times for the Ligue 1 club and the 30-year-old’s contract will be up at the end of the season.

Although Lorient would allow Fontaine to leave, no agreement has yet been reached between club and player and between Lorient and Nancy.

During the Ligue 1 game against Rennes last night, the ultras of Paris Saint-Germain (Collectif Ultras Paris) staged a significant protest against the management of the club, among other issues.

First of all, the Auteuil stand of the Parc des Princes, where the ultras are usually sat, was left empty for the first 25 minutes of the first half. And the difference was notable: all three sides of the stadium were full but without the Auteuil stand, there was an evident quietness. The ultras also blocked the entrance of other fans to the Auteuil stand, as reported by L’Équipe.

Having entered the stand, the ultras spent the rest of the first half in silence, explained by one of their 20 banners displayed in this time: “A half to prove our discontent. How many will it take to prove your commitment?”

At half-time, the PSG players returned to the dressing room with the scoreline reading 0-0 and under a barrage of discontented boos from their own fans.

Other banners targeted the management, including Leonardo (sporting director), Jean-Martial Ribes (director of communication), Jean-François Pien (training centre director), Ulrich Ramé (general manager of the women’s team) et Fabien Allègre (brand director). These names were followed by severe criticism: “A management that stinks of s**t.”

Another read: “Leonardo, time to go?” having criticised the discipline and overpayment of uncommitted players. While President Nasser al-Khelaïfi was present at the Parc des Princes last night, he was not individually named by the ultras, unlike most of his colleagues within the Parisian hierarchy.

One banner provided more severe criticism, with allusions to the Revolution, Robespierre and decapitations.

This follows a statement from the CUP on Monday on social media, criticising a sporting management that is “incomprehensible at all levels,” as well as a meeting between the fans and management during the week which was intended to settle their differences.

As reported by the French media, speaking on Twitch, former Barcelona and Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero has come to the defence of his Argentine international teammate Lionel Messi after the 34-year-old missed a penalty in PSG’s 1-0 over Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

“Leo played well, he broke the lines. It’s not because he’s a friend, but because he played hard. He was good and very active. In France, the magazines and newspapers killed him. I had an opportunity for an interview with a French magazine. But I said no because I support Leo Messi. Goodbye, see you soon. Now I’m angry.”

Agüero, however, who was forced to retire from playing earlier this season due to a heart condition, had been far from impressed by Messi’s penalty, which was saved by Thibaut Courtois at 0-0. Exclaiming on Twitch: “what a s*** penalty!”

As reported by L’Équipe, Saint-Étienne are to auction off the shirts worn by the team during the 1-0 win over Metz at the weekend when player names on the back of the shirts were replaced by the message Peace For All.

The proceeds of the auction will go to Pompiers Humanitaires Français who are involved in transporting medical supplies from France to the boarder between Poland and Ukraine, where hundreds of thousands of refugees are attempting to flee Ukraine after Russia’s invasion.

As reported by Le10Sport, with the departure of their Norwegian striker Erling Haaland highly likely this summer, Borussia Dortmund are looking to Ligue 1 for a replacement. 

Indeed, Reims’ 19-year-old striker Hugo Ekitike is of significant interest to the Bundesliga side. Despite relatively minimal game time this season after breaking through in the autumn, Ekitike has nine league goals so far this term and was subject to widespread English interest in January.

West Ham bid €25m but they were rejected, as were Newcastle who surpassed the €30m mark, bonuses included. It’s likely Dortmund would have to exceed both offers to convince the club to sell.

With the context of the sour relationship between the ultras and the club since elimination from the Champions League, both Mauricio Pochettino and Kylian Mbappé urged the supporters to get behind them for the game against the league’s second-placed side.

“We would love the supporters to be with us,” said the league’s top scorer to Canal+. “We understand their disappointment. If they’re with us it would be amazing, if not, we’ll do our job anyway.”

Paris Saint-Germain’s Argentine boss had the same message. “Next Sunday against OM is not a bonus game, it’s a special game. The supporters have every right to protest, we’re a democracy. But we hope that they will be with us and that they will leave their disappointment and anger to one side. All that to demonstrate to the whole world a strong image of our club.”
