Ursula von der Leyen was elected on Tuesday as president of the European Commission — the first woman to hold the EU’s top executive job.

The nominee of the center-right European People’s Party won 383 votes in a secret ballot of members of the European Parliament, only a little above the absolute majority of 374 she required to be confirmed.
