After a strong opening on Saturday, NJPW returns to Tokyo this Sunday for day two of the 2018 G1 Climax tournament, featuring some huge matches from the B Block. ProWrestling.com will once again have complete live coverage for the show, which actually kicks off at 2AM ET / 1AM CT / 11PM PT tonight in the United States.
With their very first points up for grabs, the “Golden Star” Kota Ibushi will put his world class striking game up against the greatest submission specialist on the planet today, Zack Sabre Jr. This will actually be the third encounter between the two in a series of excellent, show-stealing performances, with Ibushi getting the win in the 2017 G1 Climax, and ZSJ avenging his loss in this year’s New Japan Cup.
In a battle of CHAOS stablemates, the “Stone Pitbull” Tomohiro Ishii steps into the ring with the trickster god Toru Yano in what will surely be a wild clash of styles. The two have worked more than 450 matches together at partners over the years, but have never once faced each other in singles competition inside a NJPW ring. The brand new IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Champion will also be in tournament action, as Juice Robinson faces Tama Tonga, who definitely has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove after declaring Civil War on the Bullet Club last weekend in San Francisco.
The NEVER Openweight Champion Hirooki Goto will face Sanada in what should be a very good match. Multiple times Goto has come close, but is the ultimate embodiment of the phrase “always the bridesmaid, never the bride”. As one of the hottest rising young stars in the heavyweight division, Sanada will look to make a huge impact in this year’s tournament, potentially launching himself into a major championship promotion heading in 2019.
Finally, in his first singles match since defending the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Cody Rhodes in San Francisco, the “Best Bout Machine” Kenny Omega returns to war with an old rival, Tetsuya Naito. These two men have put on some absolute classics in the past, breaking ratings scales and winning awards left and right. They’ll look to do it one more time, but with an entire month long tournament in front of them, the question becomes, how much energy can either afford to spend?
