As mentioned before, WWE recently launched their shop website in the country of India, a major financial area that the company would love to thrive in. As a result, the company then scrambled to develop some Indian stars within their organization. The result was the debut of the Bollywood Boyz, (now Singh Brothers,) over on Smackdown, helping Canadian-born Indian star Jinder Mahal defeat Sami Zayn to earn a championship main event match against Randy Orton at Backlash. Mahal has impressed officials lately with his strict new diet and apparently powerful work ethic, but it wasn’t until the shop launched in India that they decided to make this move. It’s being said that Jinder Mahal was never going to receive a championship match anytime before that.
On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that the company had originally planed on having Baron Corbin face Orton for the title at the pay-per-view next month in Chicago. Meltzer has stated before that the company has big plans for Corbin, even once stating that he may be more beloved by the office than Braun Strowman. Additionally, Corbin apparently may also be receiving a new entrance and theme song to go along with his new main event push.
Randy Orton will be defending his title against Bray Wyatt at Payback this Sunday in a “House of Horrors” match. Presuming that he retains the belt, he then goes on to face Mahal next month at Backlash. With Orton likely retaining there as well, he will almost certainly then begin working with Corbin. This is still months away and plans could always change, but expect the see the original no. 1 contender face Orton in a lengthy summer or fall program later this year. It is possible that WWE may be saving the coronation of Corbin as champion for a big show like SummerSlam this August.
