‘We’re thriving here’ – after a year in office, can Donald Trump hold on to the swing states?

On a bitterly cold night just outside Pittsburgh hundreds of newly energised Democrats trudged through the snow and packed into a chilly brick building.

They were there for the opening of their candidate Conor Lamb’s latest field office, and to see the beginnings of what they hope will be a political earthquake that sends tremors all the way to Washington.

Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional district is up for grabs in a special election on March 13 after Tim Murphy, the sitting Republican, resigned in disgrace. The pro-life congressman was accused of asking his mistress to have an abortion.

It had been such a Republican area that Democrats did not even field a candidate against Mr Murphy in 2012…
