SCSU Wrestling to open 2016-17 season at Cobber Open

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team will kickoff its 2016-17 season with a trip to the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open in Moorhead, Minn. on Nov. 19.  The open-style tournament will be held on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead and it will feature many of the region’s top NCAA DI, DII and DIII programs.

News and Notes for SCSU Wrestling

  • TOP TEAM:  SCSU was ranked #1 in the Division II preseason poll and it received a top ranking in the 2016-17 NSIC preseason poll.
  • DEFENDING THE TITLE:  St. Cloud State has won two consecutive NCAA Division II titles in 2015 and 2016.  Here is a rundown of SCSU’s finishes at the NCAA DII championships over the past few seasons:  2009 (8th), 2010 (7th), 2011 (2nd), 2012 (2nd), 2013 (2nd), 2014 (6th), 2015 (1st) and 2016 (1st).
  • FANTASTIC FIVE:  SCSU has won the NSIC championship in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
  • BLACK/RED CLASSIC:  Team Red scored a 23-15 win over Team Black in the annual Black/Red Classic on Nov. 3.  The night was capped with the unveiling of the 2016 NCAA title banner and the distribution of the championship rings. SCSU recognized four-time All-American Clint Poster and 2016 NCAA national champ Brett Velasquez (125 pounds) before the Huskies unveiled their 2016 NCAA team championship banner.
  • TOPS IN THE NSIC:  Individually, SCSU had five wrestlers ranked #1 in the NSIC preseason poll.  Top-ranked Huskies this season included defending NCAA champ Brett Velasquez at 125-pounds, 3-time All-American Austin Goergen at 285-pounds, two-time All-American Matt Nelson at 141-pounds, All-American Larry Bomstad at 157-pounds and three-time All-American Gabe Fogarty at 165-pounds.
  • BIG NUMBERS FOR THE BIG GUY: SCSU’s Austin Goergen has notched 51 falls during his college career.  He also owns a 104-12 career record with the Huskies at 285-pounds.
  • A FEW MORE NOTES:  Senior 174-pounder Clayton Jennissen has won 84 matches during his career with the Huskies, including back-to-back 30 win seasons in 2015-16 and 2014-15.  He is one of the team captains along with Josh Berg, Austin Goergen, Gabe Fogarty, Uthman Rabiu, Matt Nelson and Brett Velasquez.
  • SCHEDULE UPDATE:  Fans should add a trip for the Huskies to the Northern Iowa Open on Dec. 3 to the 2016-17 schedule.
  • HOLIDAY INN/HUSKIES OPEN:  The annual Holiday Inn/Huskies Open will take place on Dec. 10 at Halenbeck Hall.  The action gets underway at 9 a.m. on that day and the tournament will feature many of the region’s top collegiate wrestlers.  Tickets for the tournament will be available at the door on Dec. 10.
  • CELEBRATE NEW YEAR’S EVE WITH THE HUSKIES:  The Huskies will host Concordia College in a non-conference dual meet on Dec. 31.  The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
  • FIRST DUAL OF THE SEASON:  The Huskies’ dual match season will begin on Dec. 1 with a trip to Southwest Minnesota State on 7 p.m.  The match is also SCSU’s first NSIC dual of the 2016-17 season.
