The Royal Parks Half Marathon Announce #greenrunners Campaign

The Royal Parks Half Marathon presented by Royal Bank of Canada announces the launch of their #greenrunners campaign, which aims to encourage runners to protect the environment by being more sustainable.

In a time when people are looking for ways to consider the environment in everything that they do, the Royal Parks Half is encouraging runners and those taking part in the race on Sunday 14 October to incorporate sustainable practices into their training. This could include anything from opting to use a reusable water bottle, to sourcing local, seasonal food, to recycling an old pair of trainers.

Runners can share the different ways in which they are being green on social media, tagging the Royal Parks Half and using the #greenrunners hashtag, for a chance to win prizes including £50 Runners Need gift cards, Winter Wonderland wristbands and a £250 personal shopping experience at the lululemon store on Regent Street.

The best images will be promoted across the Royal Parks Half Marathon’s social channels, with prizes given out to the people deemed to be the greenest runners.

Women’s Health Digital Editor, Amy Hopkinson, and author of Mind Body Bowl, Annie Clarke, both official Royal Parks Half Marathon and lulululemon ambassadors, are very excited and proud to be supporting the #greenrunners campaign.

“The idea of living a zero-waste life or becoming environmentally savvy can seem overwhelming but by incorporating small sustainable actions into our everyday fitness routines where possible we can embrace self-care for the planet, while looking after ourselves” said Amy. “Plus, for anyone who’s not into chasing a time, pledging to pick up litter at the end of every run is a PB with a difference.”

As part of the campaign, Amy and Annie will lead a plogging event, which will see runners combine jogging with picking up litter in one of London’s Royal Parks, as a reminder that we are all responsible for keeping our city clean. The plogging event will take place in Hyde Park on Tuesday 28th August, after the August bank holiday, when litter left behind by park goers is at an all-time high.

The Royal Parks Half Marathon pride themselves on their green credentials and sustainable ethos. In 2017, every plastic bottle used on the course and 58% of waste from the food festival was recycled. In addition, 891kg of discarded clothing was saved from going to a landfill site and sustainable materials are used throughout all aspects of the event including bamboo and recycled polyester shirts, wooden medals and banana composting bins, to name just a few.

Charity places are still available for the race. To secure a charity place in London’s greenest half marathon sign up via the following link: https://royalparkshalf.com/charities-list/
