Official | Cengiz Under joins Marseille on loan – €8.4m option

Ligue 1 side Marseille have announced the signing of 23-year-old Turkish international winger Cengiz Ünder from AS Roma.

The deal is a season-long loan, costing OM €500k, with a €8.4m option to buy included in the arrangement.

Sergio Ramos: “My dream is to win a 5th Champions’ League & the 1st for our club.”

Speaking to PSG TV, 35-year-old Spanish central defender Sergio Ramos discussed his ambitions with his new club in a little more detail.

“I also felt that I was going to be able to play alongside great players and in a sporting project where there is a lot of desire. We are in a club that requires you to win it all. Aside from that, in football, a lot of things can always happen. There are a number of factors and a number of small details that make a result go in one direction or another. We need to think about winning and giving everything.”

“What I observed in this club is its solidity, the thirst for victory that the players have. They want to come to a club like this. They have already played the Champions’ League final, they are very close to be able to win it and that is something that attracts me. It can only be a perfect marriage. If I can contribute, that would be marvellous for me. My dream is to win my 5th Champions’ League and the first for our club.”

Paul Pogba PSG move now rests with Leonardo’s ability to sell players

After the free transfer signings of Georginio Wijnaldum, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma as well as the €60m arrival of Achraf Hakimi, today’s L’Équipe reiterates PSG’s need to sell a sizeable chunk of their squad if they want to finance further signings.

The sports daily report that a professional squad of nearly 40 players needs to be cut to at least 25 while in turn recouping a total of 180m in fees – a figure that was proposed to France’s famously strict financial watchdog the DNCG last week – in an attempt to compensate for a deficit of between €250m and €300m.

As a result any move for Paul Pogba (28), and seemingly Eduardo Camavinga (18) too, would rely on sporting director Leonardo’s ability to sell players quickly and efficiently, something which has been far from his strong suit as PSG SD since returning to the club in 2019. Nevertheless, a seemingly very achievable amount of around €50m may be enough to secure Pogba’s services.

New Reims manager Óscar García cites Barcelona and Salzburg as tactical inspirations

Speaking to RMC Football this week, new Reims manager Óscar García discussed his tactical plans for the season to come, citing his former clubs as inspirations.

Reims begin their season next Sunday against Nice, as the Spanish manager makes his return to a Ligue 1 bench for the first time since his 2017 spell with Saint-Étienne.

The former Olympiakos and Celta Vigo manager had earlier this pre-season declared to L’Équipe that he wanted to “play like Barcelona on the ball, and like Salzburg off the ball”.

“Yes, that’s what I want to do, although there are matches where we won’t be able to. But that’s the idea. Technical players are good on the ball, but in modern football that’s not enough. We need to do more, that’s what we need to work on.”

On whether he will use a three-at-the-back formation

“What’s important is the philosophy, not the formation. You can start with a system and then change. For me, it doesn’t matter whether you play with three or four in defence. We’re trying to work with 2-3 systems that we can use this season.”

On arriving at Reims

“I’m very happy here. Everything I was told about during pre-season has happened. We have a youth academy which is perfect to work with, and we have young players. That’s how I like to work.”

Liverpool continue to show interest for Lille’s Renato Sanches

Mohamed Toubache-TER reports this morning that Lille midfielder Renato Sanches could still be set to leave for Liverpool, with les Dogues’ management intend to sell the Portugal international for no less than a €40-42m fee.

Club president Olivier Létang had last week confirmed to RMC Sport that several “big clubs” were interested in signing the former Bayern Munich man, although he ruled out any contact from Juventus.

The Euro 2016 winner has been at the club since 2016, notably helping LOSC to a league title last season as they pipped PSG to first place. The 23-year-old is currently under contract with the Northern club for the next two seasons.

Barcelona members file a complaint with the European Commission over Messi to PSG

With Lionel Messi tearfully saying goodbye to the Nou Camp over the weekend and reportedly set to fly to Paris today, a move to PSG edges ever close. It’s a concept that Barcelona club members, or Socios, are (much like the rest of the continent) are still trying to grasp.

In response, Barça Socios have filed a complaint with the European Commission asking that PSG not be allowed to sign Messi, regardless of the fact that he is now a free agent, as they believe Paris are failing to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, as reported by RMC.

Barcelona members are supported by a French lawyer, Juan Branco, who posted a cover letter to Twitter stating “it is inconceivable that financial fair play serves to aggravate the excesses of football business”. Branco explained his firm and Barça members were “demand[ing] a provisional suspension from civil and administrative courts in France to prevent Paris-Saint Germain from signing Lionel Messi.”

Finances continues to be an issue for PSG this summer, with at least part of a €250m to €300m deficit needing to be covered by substantial player sales.

Ligue 1 Team Of The Week | Matchday 1 2021/22

GK, Benoît Costil (Bordeaux) – PSG’s Keylor Navas was central to his side’s comeback at Troyes but Costil made four excellent stops, including one superb reflex save with his elbow from a defected shot, to avoid a rout by visiting Clermont.

FB, Fabien Centonze (Metz) – Always quietly impressive in Ligue 1 for Metz and posted arguably his best display yet with a dynamic performance on the right flank pushing forward to great effect, scoring twice, and remaining solid defensively. At just 25, it’s a surprise bigger clubs haven’t taken more of an interest.

CB, Ismaël Traoré (Angers) – The Angers captain has looked to be aging for a couple of seasons now but he continually fights back and puts in performances like this to help Le SCO to a surprise 2-0 win at Strasbourg, scoring the first himself.

CB, Nicolas Pallois (Nantes) – Pallois posted a typically rugged and bullish display as Nantes held off the much-fancied Monaco in the season’s opening game to escape the principality with a point (1-1).

FB, Achraf Hakimi (PSG) – As expected, Hakimi marauded up and down his flank as PSG overcame a scare in falling behind at promoted Troyes on Saturday. The Moroccan’s bulldozing burst and empathetic finish equalised for PSG.

CM, Ander Herrera (PSG) – A little underrated at PSG overall and rarely in the spotlight but is the perfect understudy for games like this, driving play from midfield and helping a sluggish PSG avoid an embarrassing start at the Ligue 2 champions.

CM, Renato Sanches (Lille) – Although Metz were down to 10 men as Lille came from 3-1 down to draw at Metz, Sanches was a real driving force behind Les Dogues revival and grew into the game having started on the flank before moving inside. A promising display given how his form trailed off last season.

AM, Dimitri Payet (Marseille) – A classic Payet performance as Marseille beat Montpellier 3-2. The 34-year-old was lucky to see his free kick skip through the wall for 2-2 but his chest-out, almost arrogant run and side foot finish to win the game was superb, as were some lovely touches around the area besides.

WF, Cengiz Ünder (Marseille) – Played with skill and intensity as OM came from behind to beat Montpellier 3-2 on Sunday night. Not everything came off for him but had his full-back reeling for long spells and nipped in to tap home Marseille’s first.

WF, Kamaldeen Sulemana (Rennes) – The new signing posted a thrilling first half display in Rennes’ 1-1 draw with Lens that included a sumptuous curling effort to open the scoring. The Ghanaian faded a little after half time and was subbed but the prospect of him working in tandem with Jérémy Doku on the opposite flank is mouthwatering.

ST, Mohamed Bayo (Clermont) – Showed some intelligent movement and was a constant threat in promoted Clermont’s 2-0 win at Bordeaux and might have had more than the one but it was a crucial one – an 82th minute deadlock breaker.

Lyon send defender Marcelo to reserves following reported altercation with Maxwel Cornet

Lyon-based outlet Le Progrès report that defender Marcelo’s demotion to the Lyon reserve team and imminent contract termination are down to an altercation with winger Maxwel Cornet.

After the 3-0 loss to Angers at the weekend, there had reportedly been heated arguments between the players in the dressing room. In particular, an altercation took place between Marcelo and Cornet where the centre-back had criticised the Ivorian for his sending off – Le Progrès add that these reports have not been confirmed by the club itself.

This would consitute the “inappropriate conduct” Lyon mentioned in yesterday’s statement announcing Marcelo’s removal from first-team training.

Marcelo has also been the main focus of criticism following his performances in the first two games of the season, where the 34-year-old has looked off the pace despite being one of last year’s key performers and renewing his contract in March. With new manager Peter Bosz looking to play a high line in defence, Marcelo’s lack of pace appears to be an issue, beyond the apparent attitude issues.

PSG midfielder Rafinha could leave on loan

With PSG desperate to make player sales to cover a sizeable deficit in their finances and to perhaps fund further signings this summer, midfielder Rafinha could, surprisingly, be allowed to leave on a loan deal report Canal Supporters and Sky Italia.

Serie A is reported as the Brazilian’s most likely destination with the player keen for playing time, something which has dried up under Mauricio Pochettino after the 28-year-old was used far more liberally by former coach Thomas Tuchel, often to good effect.

Clubs from other leagues could yet join the race say CS as PSG would consider covering part of the player’s salary should he be loaned for the season. The former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Celta Vigo man’s contract runs until 2023.
