TOP-RATED ENGLISH referee Wayne Barnes has been appointed as referee for Ireland’s 17 November meeting with New Zealand at the Aviva Stadium.

The veteran official, who became a hate figure in New Zealand after the All Blacks’ 2007 World Cup exit, will hang up his whistle after next year’s World Cup.

Barnes has taken charge of All Black fixtures numerous times since, including a heavy defeat suffered by Ireland in 2010 when Jamie Heaslip was red-carded in New Plymouth. Barnes will be assisted by France’s Mathieu Raynal, FIR official Marius Mitrea and compatriot Rowan Kitt.

Joe Schmidt’s side open their four-Test November schedule in Chicago again this year, with Nigel Owens in charge of the meeting with Italy at Soldier Field. His assistants on 3 November are France’s Romaine Poite and Alexandre Ruiz. American David Ardrey will be TMO.

Ireland v Argentina on 10 November will be officiated by former Queensland Reds scrum-half Nic Berry, with countryman Angus Gardner and France’s Ludovic Cayre running the lines beneath TMO David Grashoff.

The month undoubtedly peaks with the arrival of the back-to-back world champions when Ireland can challenge for the number one world ranking, but the Test window shuts with the visit of the USA to Dublin. Kiwi Ben O’Keefe will lead a team of Nic Berry, Marius Mitrea and Wales’ Ian Davies on 24 November.

It will be a busy month for Irish officials too. Andrew Brace takes charge of Scotland v Fiji and Italy v New Zealand when he will have Sean Gallagher as assistant.

Brace will then assist John Lacey for the 1 December Barbarians-Argentina clash in Twickenham. Gallagher will also be assistant ref as Russia host Namibia and also when Canada take on Germany as part of a glut of fixtures in Marseille.

Joy Neville will run the line twice in Stade Delort where Canada meet Kenya and Hong Kong on 11 and 23 November respectively. George Clancy will be assistant ref in the southern French city for Hong Kong v Germany, Hong Kong v Kenya and Kenya v Germany.

Frank Murphy will stand opposite Barnes as assistant for Scotland’s unseasonable visit to Cardiff, with assistant roles for Italy v Georgia and Scotland v South Africa to come before he holds the whistle for Spain v Samoa in Madrid on 24 November.

Sale Sharks 34-13 Connacht

CHRIS ASHTON LED the rout with a hat-trick as Sale Sharks came from behind to take control of this Challenge Cup pool.

Connacht did well initially but the wheels came off for an experimental side after the restart when Sale took control and powered through for their second bonus-point win.

A superb try on his delayed debut for Sale Sharks by Ashton helped them draw level at 13-13 at the break after a scrappy opening half.

Connacht, with Conor Fitzgerald making an instant impact in his first start at out-half, enjoyed the brighter opening.

A break by Fitzgerald forced Springbok scrum-half Faf de Klerk to knock-on deliberately. He got 10 minutes in the bin and Fitzgerald got a perfect kick from 25 metres in front of the posts to settle him.

He doubled the lead at the end of the opening quarter before Sale got a foothold and two penalties from de Klerk tied the match after 27 minutes.

Connacht were rewarded for their ambition when scrum-half Caolin Blade, skippering the side for the first time, opted to go to the right corner with a penalty and two lineout penalties later saw hooker Shane Delahunt get over in the right corner.

Fitzgerald added the touchline conversion after 31 minutes.

But a sloppy turnover in a good attacking position saw Sale counter from deep and Ashton, quiet until then, put on the burners to score in the right corner, with de Klerk’s excellent conversion levelling before the break.

Sale got on top after the restart and ruthlessly punished Connacht mistakes, with number eight Josh Beaumont powering over from the base of a scrum after a knock-on by Tiernan O’Halloran after 54 minutes.

Less than three minutes later they wrapped up the issue when Ashton tapped a penalty and got over.

And he secured the bonus point — complete with a swan dive — 16 minutes from time to complete the rout after Paul Boyl was binned for taking out Sam James after the full-back kicked inside the Connacht 22 after a break from the home line.

GETHIN JENKINS, WALES’ most capped international, has announced he will retire from professional rugby this weekend due to a chronic knee injury.

The 37-year-old has been battling back from the injury for the last three months and despite making two appearances on the comeback trail, will call time on his career after Cardiff Blues’ Pro14 clash against Zebre on Sunday.

Jenkins, who has won 129 Wales caps and five appearances for the Lions across three tours, has been told his right knee ‘is not healthy enough’ to prolong his decorated career any further.

The prop will bid farewell to the Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday after amassing 194 appearances for the Welsh region, helping the club to two European Challenge Cup titles.

In a statement today, Jenkins said the pain he has been experiencing in his everyday life in recent months ‘simply isn’t tolerable’ but it is important for him to finish on his own terms.

“I have been working hard rehabbing over the last three months and I was confident I was going to be back playing so it’s disappointing to be retiring after Sunday’s game against Zebre,” he said.

“It’s obviously a big decision but I’ve had a good innings, it’s time to finish and I’m looking forward to one more run out on the weekend and hopefully finishing on a high.

“The pain I have been experiencing from rugby, in my daily life, simply isn’t tolerable but it’s important to me that after all the work I have put in, I run out with my team one last time and finish on my own terms.

As well as the legacy he will leave at Cardiff, Jenkins played a pivotal role for Wales during their four Six Nations title wins, three of which were Grand Slams, while he also won the Heineken Cup during his season with Toulon back in 2013.

“I have so many memories from over the years and could stay here all day listing them but the biggest thing I will miss is that camaraderie with the boys, the buzz of running out and playing, and the feeling in the changing rooms after a win,” he added.

“I’m very proud of everything I have achieved in my career, particularly captaining the Blues in the previous three seasons. None of it would have been possible without my parents and the 2005 Grand Slam always stands out as Mum and Dad were both there supporting me.”
