Kilkenny, Cork and Dublin stars land Player of the Year awards for 2018 exploits

SHE MAY NOT have been on the winning side in the 2018 All-Ireland senior final but Kilkenny star Anne Dalton was last night named Camogie Association/WGPA Senior Players’ Player of the Year.

Cork beat Kilkenny hearts at the death for the second year in-a-row in the showpiece and had two players, Chloe Sigerson and Orla Cotter, up for the individual accolade.

But it was Dalton who landed the big one for the first time, along with her sixth All-Star last night.

The 30-year-old St Lachtain’s midfielder was central to Kilkenny’s year as they reached the All-Ireland decider and claimed their third Division 1 league title on the bounce.

Elsewhere, Cork and Dublin All-Ireland winners Saoirse McCarthy and Caragh Dawson scooped the coveted Player of the Year awards at Intermediate and Junior level.

All three were selected from a shortlist compiled by the WGPA after voting by their fellow inter-county players, with the awards sponsored by Liberty Insurance.

Cork manager Paudie Murray was honoured as Manager of the Year for a record third time after overseeing the Rebels’ All-Ireland success in both grades.

Best of the best: Dalton, McCarthy and Dawson.

And there was further celebration for Cork as their intermediate side led the way in the 2018 Soaring Stars team. Their seven representatives joined players from intermediate runners-up Down (five), All-Ireland Premier Junior champions Dublin (two) and Tipperary (one).

History makers! A first Connacht club title arrives for Leitrim with success at junior hurling level

A PIECE OF GAA history was created yesterday afternoon when a provincial title was claimed by a Leitrim club for the first time.

Carrick hurling club were crowned Connacht junior champions after a 2-11 to 2-9 success over Galway’s Ballygar.

It marked a first victory for a Leitrim club at Connacht championship level after 10 previous final losses. In football Leitrim outfits have lost six senior finals, two intermediate deciders and one junior final, while there was also previously a reversal in a final at junior hurling level.

@carrickhurling captain James Glancy has just carried the @ConnachtGAA Junior Hurling Cup across the Bridge in Carrick in Shannon. An historic occasion the first Leitrim man to carry a provincial club cup into the county!#LeitrimGAA pic.twitter.com/X11SOZNeeO

Carrick trailed 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time and were five points in arrears, 1-8 to 0-6, by the 43rd minute. But a couple of goals in quick succession helped them go in front by a point with seven minutes remaining and despite conceding a late goal in injury-time, they clung on for a five-point success.

The victory propels Carrick into the All-Ireland series where they will face a semi-final clash in January.

18-point win for Na Piarsaigh as they cruise into Munster final but injury worries over Dowling and Lynch

Na Piarsaigh 3-22
Clonoulty-Rossmore 0-13

Paraic McMahon reports from Gaelic Grounds

IT WAS EVIDENT from the off in this AIB Munster SHC club semi-final that Na Piarsaigh meant business as they sought to put the game to bed as soon as was possible.

They had two goal chances inside the opening three minutes, Adrian Breen’s first effort went wide while Declan O’Dwyer pulled off a save to deny Kevin Downes.

While the Limerick kingpins were alert from the throw-in, the same could not be said for Clonoulty whose marking was not of the level one would expect for the provincial championship. This in turn opened up a bundle of space for the lively Na Piarsaigh attack and they duly capitalised on it.

With twenty one minutes on the clock, Paul Beary’s Na Piarsaigh had built up a 0-10 to 0-3 advantage with the bulk of the scores courtesy of Adrian Breen, Shane Dowling and Ronan Lynch.

Paudie White did hit two points from play for the Tipperary champions in the opening half with Timmy Hammersley chipping in with three frees. However the concession of two goals in the final ten minutes of the first half sapped any morale they still had.

On the restart, Na Piarsaigh were without Shane Dowling who sustained a hand injury while in the remainder of the half they lost Ronan Lynch and Kieran Kennedy. It still didn’t deter their cause, they scored 1-5 without reply on the resumption with Peter Casey raising his second green flag. Timmy Hammersley kept the Clonoulty-Rossmore account ticking over but the mountain was always too big to climb.

Na Piarsaigh lost Shane Dowling through injury today.

Source: James Crombie/INPHO

All over the pitch, four-time Munster champions Na Piarsaigh dominated. In particular their half-back line of Lynch, William O’Donoghue and Cathal King allowed them stamp their authority on proceedings while up front Breen and Casey scored a combined 2-8. They have yet to lose a game in this competition and it will take a serious challenge to buck this trend.

Winning their first county title since 1997 makes 2018 a memorable year for Clonoulty-Rossmore, however their involvement in the Munster club is one they will be keen to forget.

Scorers Clonoulty-Rossmore: Timmy Hammersley 0-8 (0-5f), Paudie White 0-2, Cathal Bourke, Conor Hammersley, Dillon Quirke (0-1 sideline cut) 0-1 each.

O’Leary fires 2-2 as Dr Crokes defeat Moyle to set up Munster semi-final against St Finbarr’s

Dr Crokes 3-15
Moyle Rovers 0-8

Conor Kane reports from Ardfinnan

DR CROKES CAMPAIGN to emulate their recent Munster and All-Ireland club successes got off to the best possible start at Ardfinnan in Tipperary today when they blitzkrieged Moyle Rovers with an exhibition of scoring.

The full-forward was in excellent scoring form today for Dr Crokes.

Source: Laszlo Geczo/INPHO

Full-forward Kieran O’Leary ended up with 2-2, the goals both opportunistic but well-taken efforts following defensive mistakes in the first half, while Tony Brosnan scored 0-7 and Micheál Burns chipped in with three from play to keep daylight between the teams.

Moyle Rovers opened brightly enough, attacking at pace in the early minutes and earning a couple of nice points through Richard Power and Liam Boland.

But three crucial incidents in that first half prevented them from keeping in touch with their more famous rivals by the interval. The first goal came in the 10th minute when Kieran O’Leary goaled after a defensive mistake and O’Leary had another green flag in the 28th minute, again benefiting from hesitation in the Rovers defence after a long Johnny Buckley ball and fisting to the net, ensuring the Kerry champions led by 2-8 to 0-5 at half-time.

Dr Crokes playing Gavin White goes up against Moyle Rovers Stephen Quirke.

In the mean time, Moyle Rover lost influential corner-forward Liam Boland to a black card, piling difficulty on difficulty.

When they lost Shane Foley to a straight red early in the second half, it was yet another problem and Dr Crokes were more than capable of capitalising in full.

Former Kerry superstar Colm “Gooch” Cooper entered the fray in the 40th minute, set up a couple of scores and scored a point himself after jinking through the defence, with the issue all but decided as the game entered the last quarter.

0-4 for Sice and 3 sent-off as All-Ireland winners Corofin complete county 6-in-a-row in Galway

Updated at 19.58

Corofin 1-8
Mountbellew-Moylough 0-5

Declan Rooney reports from Pearse Stadium

MOUNTBELLEW-MOYLOUGH FRUSTRATED the life out of Corofin again, but the champions still managed to claim their sixth Galway senior football crown in a row thanks to four points from Gary Sice.

Corofin’s Dylan Wall and Jason Leonard celebrate after the game.

This was another dour affair with scoring scarce, but Sice and Corofin now go on to face Clann na nGael in the Connacht semi-final next weekend.

Noel McDonagh was sent off for Mountbellew/Moylough with two minutes remaining, while Kieran Fitzgerald – who won a record 13th Galway medal – and Barry McHugh both picked up second yellow cards in the closing stages, and Michael Daly also received his marching orders in added-time after he earned yellow and black cards.

Corofin’s Kieran Fitzgerald and Barry McHugh of Mountbellew-Moylough after being sent-off.

Source: Lorraine O’Sullivan/INPHO

Like last week’s game, which finished in 0-7 each, Mountbellew/Moylough set out with a very tight defensive shape, designed to frustrate Corofin and to keep their scoring chances to a minimum.

Their plan got off to a great start when Michael Daly pointed from distance in the first minute, but two minutes later Corofin hit the net when Liam Silke and Dylan Wall linked up and Wall beat Damien Boyle with a crisp shot.

Michael Daly showed he was able to repeat his earlier achievement with a brilliant score from the right to trim the lead, but Mountbellew-Moylough should have pulled clear after nine minutes when Ger Donoghue crept in behind the Corofin cover, but his shot came back off the post.

It seemed as if Corofin had finally figured out how to cope with Mountbellew-Moylough’s tactics when they reeled off four points without reply, although Michael Farragher’s point could have been a goal, only for a good recovery from Damien Boyle to tip his effort over the bar.

A fight breaks out in the clash at Pearse Stadium.

Source: Lorraine O’Sullivan/INPHO

A Barry McHugh free kept Mountbellew-Moylough in touch, and they pulled off a great counter attack score when they turned over Corofin, who seemed to have held the ball untouched for three minutes, and Eoin Finnerty supplied the finishing touch to the move to make it 1-4 to 0-4 at the break.

McHugh had the chance to put two points between the sides but his free from outside the 45 metre line sailed wide, in the only action of note in the ten minutes after the restart, but Sice instead added to Corofin’s lead with a 42nd minute free.

Faced with a double scores deficit Mountbellew-Moylough had to be a little more adventurous and Paul Donnellan was denied a goal by a smart Dylan McHugh block, and when the resultant ’45 from McHugh was kicked wide their chances of victory went with it.

Corofin’s Kieran Fitzgerald and Cathal Silke tackle Mountbellew’s Barry McHugh.

2016 and 2017 champions set for Galway hurling final meeting after wins in today’s semi-finals

THEY ARE THE last two winners of the Galway senior hurling championship and now both St Thomas and Liam Mellows will face off for the right to be crowned 2018 champions in the county.

St Thomas, victors in 2016, and Liam Mellows, kingpins last December as they ended a 47-year wait, will meet each other in the decider after their semi-final victories in a double-header at Kenny Park in Athenry this afternoon.

In the opening match St Thomas saw off Sarsfields by 2-19 to 0-20. The last score of the game came from a Brendan Farrell goal for St Thomas in injure-time as he clinched their five-point victory over the 2015 title winners.

An early Darragh Burke goal provided St Thomas with a boost but it was Sarsfields who were in front 0-12 to 1-8 at the interval. St Thomas grew in stature as the second half progressed to go in front 1-15 to 0-17 with ten minutes remaining and outscored their opponents by 1-4 to 0-3 thereafter to claim victory.

In the second game reigning champions Liam Mellows ran out 0-20 to 0-19 winners over Capptaggle and were grateful to Tadhg Haran for shooting over a late point to clinch their success.

Liam Mellows were ahead 0-14 to 0-10 at half-time and survived despite a strong second-half fightback from Capptaggle who were left to contemplate a one-point semi-final loss for the second successive year to Liam Mellows.

2-4 for captain fantastic Ring as superb Foxrock-Cabinteely seal Leinster four in-a-row

Foxrock-Cabinteely (Dublin) 4-11
Sarsfields (Laois) 1-08

By Aisling Clery in Kinnegad

Four in-a-row: Leinster champions Fox-Cab.

Source: FM104 Twitter.

2-4 FROM CAPTAIN fantastic Amy Ring sealed Foxrock-Cabinteely’s fourth successive Leinster Ladies Senior Football crown in front of a large crowd in Kinnegad on Sunday afternoon.

A determined and gritty Fox-Cab dominated the early stages, taking a 0-05 to no score lead with points from Tarah O’Sullivan, Hannah O’Neill and three from the boot of inspirational skipper Ring.

Fox-Cab were doing all the damage and were resolute in defence with Dublin’s TG4 All-Ireland Senior winners Hannah O’Neill and Amy Connolly moving the ball well for the reigning champions.

Sarsfields opened their account on 16 minutes, Clare Conlon on target, and two further points had them just two behind.

Dublin star Connolly was Player of the Match.

Source: Donall Farmer/INPHO

Fox-Cab moved clear again and were rewarded with a penalty when another Dublin star, Sinead Goldrick, was fouled in the square and ex-Dublin panellist Ring made no mistake with the finish.

Credit to Sarsfields though, their reply was instant as half time loomed and Conlon hitting 1-01 without reply to leave the sides two apart at the break.

The teams traded scores early on in the second half with Ring and Connolly on song for the Dublin champions while Conlon proved a thorn in the Foxrock defence, hitting a total of 1-06 over the hour.

Sarsfields were unfortunate to lose full back Alison McEvoy to the sin bin, as Fox-Cab started to up the ante. Two goals in four minutes, substitute Roisin McGovern and Ring raising green flags, finally put daylight between the sides.

Sinead Goldrick was influential for Fox-Cab.

Source: Tommy Dickson/INPHO

Sarsfields though continued to attack but with Player of the Match Connolly in fine form, there was no denying the reigning champions.

A second Fox-Cab penalty was converted by McGovern who took her total tally to 2-01 and while there was time for Aileen O’Loughlin to split the posts, Fox-Cab had the hard work done and the Bill Daly Cup will reside once more in the Capital.

Fox-Cab march into the All-Ireland semi-finals, where they will face Monaghan and Ulster champions Donaghmoyne over the weekend of November 17/18.

Foxrock-Cabinteely: Aisling Tarpey, Aedin Murray, Sarah Quinn, Emma McDonagh, Sinead Goldrick, Niamh Collins, Lorna Fusciardi, Tarah O’Sullivan (0-02), Ciara Ni Mhurchadh, Laura Nerney, Amy Connolly (0-02), Fiona Claffey (0-01), Hannah O’Neill (0-01), Ciara O’Riordan, Amy Ring (C, 2-04, 1pen, 3F)

53 scores and 90 minutes of action as Ballygunner defeat Ballyea in Munster club hurling thriller

Ballygunner 2-26
Ballyea 2-23

Eoin Brennan reports from Walsh Park

IT HAD TO take 90 minutes for Ballygunner to finally prevail over a never-say-die Ballyea and set up a third Munster senior club hurling final against Limerick’s Na Piarsaigh in fours years in Walsh Park this afternoon.

Philip Mahony celebrates his late goal in normal time for Ballygunner.

Source: Ken Sutton/INPHO

In a thrilling roller-coaster ride that could have swung either way, the five-in-a-row Waterford champions never looked back from a last gasp equalising goal from Philip Mahony that would force extra-time.

Check out the full-time highlights between Ballygunner (Waterford) and Ballyea (Clare) were we saw two periods of extra-time! pic.twitter.com/owPyUYfVRF

— The GAA (@officialgaa) November 4, 2018

So while Niall Deasy did his utmost to keep Ballyea afloat including a saving point from a  ’65 in the 83rd minute to ensure another ten minutes of action, Ballygunner ultimately demonstrated the greater strength-in-depth to grab the last three points through top-scorer Pauric Mahony and substitutes Barry O’Sullivan and Conor Sheahan.

Without half over their 2016 Munster winning side, Ballyea fought valiantly throughout but despite a handsome 2-10 haul from Deasy, including sucker-punch goals at the end of either half, and all of his side’s six points in the 30 minutes of extra-time, the Clare champions would eventually have to concede second best to a character-filled Ballygunner who had to use all their vast experience at this level to inch over the line.

Ballygunner’s JJ Hutchinson celebrates at the final whistle.

Source: Ken Sutton/INPHO

Six points from Pauric Mahony opened up a 0-7 to 0-4 advantage by the 18th minute before being rocked back on their heels over the next ten minutes as Ballyea grabbed the next five to move two clear.

A Deasy solo goal only copper-fastened Ballyea’s growing dominance to lead by 1-9 to 0-9 by the break, a margin that would be doubled by the 40th minute as the leadership of Tony Kelly, Martin O’Leary and Gary Brennan all yielded scores.

Ballygunner’s lively target man Conor Power would virtually turn the tie on its head with a 1-2 haul in three minutes, enough for Pauric Mahony to add four more as the hosts wrestled back control at 1-17 to 1-15 entering the final five minutes.

However, inevitably it was Deasy who would provide Ballyea with a golden opportunity to protect their perfect Munster record as his 57th minute flicked goal allied to points from O’Leary and Pearse Lillis put the 2016 winners into a three-point lead in injury-time.

Niall Deasy was inspirational today for Ballyea.

Ballygunner refused to panic though and after a Shane O’Sullivan free from halfway was ushered out to the left corner, Conor Power would issue a teasing delivery across the square that Philip Mahony batted to the net to ensure extra-time.

Twice Deasy edged his side back in front in the opening half of the additional periods but he would have to convert a last gasp ’65 just to prolong Ballyea’s journey for a second helping of extra-time.

It would be in vain however as with little left in the tank, Ballyea would be overtaken by a Barry O’Sullivan point in the first half before subsequent efforts from Mahony and Conor Sheahan completed a famous Ballygunner victory.

O’Connor brothers hit all of Ballintubber’s points in win and Shine shoots 0-9 as Clann na nGael march on

Ballintubber 0-6
Tourlestrane 0-5

Mike Finnerty reports from Enniscrone

DESPITE SCORING JUST once from open play, Mayo champions Ballintubber did just enough to squeeze past Tourlestrane in today’s Connacht club senior quarter-final at a windy Enniscrone.

As expected this game was a cagey and tactical affair with the winners struggling to break down Eamonn O’Hara’s well-organised and defensively-solid unit. However, Tourlestrane were left to count the cost of red cards for Shane Dunne and Adrian McIntyre in the 46th and 64th minutes.

Cillian O’Connor finished with five points from frees for Ballintubber with Diarmuid O’Connor landing their only score from play in the 16th minute. The West Mayo side led at the end of a disappointing first half by 0-3 to 0-1, despite having played with the strong wind behind them.

Two long-range frees from Cillian O’Connor were supplemented by a superb score from his brother, Diarmuid, to leave Ballintubber three points up after 22 minutes. It took Tourlestrane half an hour to open their account through the impressive Cathal Henry.

The sides traded points three times during the third quarter to maintain the status quo with Cathal Henry (free), Oisín Kennedy and Shane Dunne all on target for Tourlestrane.

Dunne was sent off less than a minute after his inspirational point for a high challenge on Ruaidhri O’Connor. These scores were cancelled out by three frees from Cillian O’Connor to leave Ballintubber ahead by 0-6 to 0-4 swinging into the last ten minutes.

Cathal Henry fired over a brilliant point in the 57th minute to keep Tourlestrane in the hunt, but a second booking for Adrian McIntyre in injury-time didn’t help their cause as they hunted an equaliser.

But captain Donie Shine inspired Clann na nGael’s fightback in the second half as he finished with 0-9 overall while Ciaran Lennon chipped in with 0-3 and captain Graham Pettit fired home a goal.

They now advance to face reigning All-Ireland champions Corofin in next weekend’s Connacht semi-final after their victory in the Galway final replay this afternoon.
