MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS ARE champions of Westmeath for the first time since 2012 after dethroning Leinster finalists St Loman’s today.

Goals from Paddy Fagan and  Dennis Corroon in either half helped Shamrocks end the Loman’s dominance in Westmeath on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-11.

They’ll face Kildare champions Moorefield in the Leinster club championship next Sunday.

Ballyea pull off 13-point second-half turnaround to claim second Clare crown in three years

Ballyea 1-20
Cratloe 1-14

BALLYEA WOULD PRODUCE a remarkable 13 point second half turnaround to complete their second Clare senior hurling title in three years in front of 7,040 in Cusack Park Ennis this afternoon.

Niall Deasy’s 13 point haul from placed balls was copperfastened by the 55th minute clinching goal for Martin O’Leary as Ballyea, minus seven of their 2016 team, turned the tables on their flagging opponents.

It was a sea-change that certainly seemed unlikely when already trailing by four by the break, Ballyea would fall seven behind within 90 seconds of the restart. However, while Cratloe misfired with eight second half wides, Ballyea kept chipping away at the deficit, mainly through Deasy’s frees and would amazingly outscore the 2014 champions by 1-11 to 0-01 for the remainder to clinch only their second ever title.

Despite having the wind at their backs, Ballyea were largely second best in the opening period as Billy Connors and Cathal McInerney inspired a 1-10 to 0-09 interval lead for Cratloe.

Source: Bryan Keane/INPHO

Niall Deasy cannoned a shot off the crossbar in the seventh minute but Cathal McInerney made no mistake at the other end when fielding a Conor McGrath delivery on the turn to power through and bat past goalkeeper Barry Coote in the 25th minute.

Three Connors’ points carved out a four point half-time deficit that would be accentuated on the resumption when McInerney, Shane Gleeson and Connors fired points in the space of a minute to open up a 1-13 to 0-09 cushion.

However, they failed to bolster their tally and it allowed Ballyea a glimmer of hope that Deasy exploited to convert seven of the next eight points before also teeing up Martin O’Leary for a 52nd minute equaliser.

Brandon O’Connell nudged Ballyea in front from the puck-out while four minutes later, O’Leary accepted a gift from another to billow the net at 1-18 to 1-14.

With a wave of momentum now behind them, O’Leary and Deasy completed the scoring as Cratloe tried in vain for a lifeline goal in a bid to end an almost 30 minute barren patch.

Scorers for Ballyea: Niall Deasy 0-13 (12f, 1’65); Martin O’Leary 1-3; Tony Kelly 0-2; Gary Brennan, Brandon O’Connell 0-1 each

Scorers for Cratloe: Billy Connors 0-8 (4f); Cathal McInerney 1-3; Conor McGrath, Rian Considine, Shane Gleeson 0-1 each

Kilmacud and Ballyboden play out helter-skelter extra-time draw to force final replay

Kilmacud Crokes 1-20

Ballyboden St Endas 2-17 (aet)

Stephen O’Meara reports from Parnell Park

ANTHONY DALY’S KILMACUD Crokes came into today’s Dublin Senior Hurling Championship final as favourites against Ballyboden St Endas, having taken out double All-Ireland champions, Cuala, in the semi-final.

Boden, however, in their first year under Joe Fortune, who guided the Dublin minors to Leinster success in ‘07 and the 21’s likewise in ‘16, may well have felt they were lying in wait in the long grass.

In the end, nothing could separate the sides after Crokes snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat in normal time, before seeing late two point lead turned to parity in extra-time.

There was an ominous start as Crokes opened up with 1-1 in the opening four minutes, after Seán McGrath found the net after two neat hand-passes put him on the end of the move.

Despite playing into the wind, Daly chose a traditional formation with six defenders, two midfielders and six forwards, as did Boden.

After Crokes’ blistering start, under intense Ballyboden pressure in the middle third, they would begin to have serious trouble trying to penetrate Boden’s ferocious tackling, into the moderate wind. They would score just four more points in the first half.

With Boden getting a foothold on the game, a Conor Dooley aerial strike in the seventeenth minute gave them a two point lead which they would maintain up to the break, 1-7 to 1-5.

Paul Ryan celebrates a late Ballyboden goal.

With the wind in their backs, however, and Ryan O’Dwyer continuing to lead from centre back, Crokes would dominate the second half, equalising on the three-quarter mark, and taking a two-point lead into the latter stages, before a Paul Ryan free for Boden brought it back to one.

The Ballyboden section of the stand would erupt when Conor McCormac slipped a hand-pass for Aidan Mellet to net, giving his side what seemed like the winning goal, two points up in injury time.

No sooner had the ball been netted, however, Crokes had it over the bar at the far end before, winning a free which Marc Howard pointed on the re-start, levelling at 2-11 to 1-14.

Indeed, Howard would have one more chance to seal the deal only for his long free to drop short.

Despite Boden taking a two point lead with the wind in extra time, it was Crokes who would lead by two late on, only for Boden’s McMorrow and Paul Ryan to reel off late levellers.

A late gaping opportunity for Boden, where they had a three v one deep in Crokes’ territory, was squandered, leaving the sides tied at 1-20 to 2-17, and a replay to look forward to next Sunday at 3.30 pm.

Scorers for Crokes: Marc Howard 0-11 (10f), Seán McGrath 1-1, Caolán Conway 0-2, Cian MacGabhann 0-1, Fergal Whitley 0-1, Lorcan McMullan 0-1, Oisín O’Rorke 0-1, Ross O’Carroll 0-1, Shane Veale 0-1

Scorers for Ballyboden: Paul Ryan 0-11 (8f, 1 “65”, 1 side-line), Conor Dooley 1-2, Aidan Mellet 1-0, David Curtin 0-1, Conal Keaney 0-1, Niall Ryan 0-1, Niall McMorrow

In an enjoyable Cavan decider, Castlerahan delivered the crown after suffering defeat in each of the last three finals.

This time around they enjoyed a 2-11 to 1-13 win against Crosserlough, coming back from six points behind with 15 minutes to go to win a high-quality clash.

Coleraine are the champions in Derry following their 1-12 to 0-12 victory over Lavey. It’s just the second time in the club’s history to lift the John McLaughlin Cup. Lavey fought back from a sizeable deficit with substitute Caileann O’Boyle scoring seven points, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Cargin prevailed in the Antrim final by defeat Creggan by 0-5 to 0-4.

Finally, in the Ulster club first round, Monaghan’s Scotstown advanced past Derrygonnelly of Fermanagh on a scoreline of 2-17 to 1-11.

Leinster champions Moorefield retain Kildare football title

Moorefield 2-12
Athy 2-9

Robert Cribbin reports from St.Conleths Park

MOOREFIELD MADE IT back-to-back Kildare senior football titles with a three-point victory over 14-man Athy in St.Conleths park.

Moorefield led all the way through with first-half goals from Mark McDermott and Eddie Heavey setting up the victory.

Athy stationed Kevin Feely at full forward and he proved pretty effective in bagging two second half goals but the ship had already sailed at that stage for the challengers.

Athy weren’t helped either with goalkeeper Stephen Davis seeing red in an altercation after the second Moorefield goal.

The Leinster champions made a rip roaring start with two goals inside the opening fifteen minutes with Heavey netting the opening score of the game before Mark McDermott followed up a couple of minutes later.

Davis kicked out at Niall Hurley Lynch after the goal and so Athy had to play three quarters of the game with just 14 men.

Source: Lorraine O’Sullivan/INPHO

The second goal gave Moorefield an eight point lead and with Niall Hurley Lynch and Adam Tyrrell kicking further points they pushed into a 2-5 to 0-2 lead at the break.
The second half was going swimmingly for the Newbridge side aswell as they led by nine points at one stage with man of the match Tyrrell starring.

Athy got a couple of lifelines though with Feely fisting in a 50th minute goal from a long ball into the square by Niall Kelly and the former Soccer star then expertly put a penalty away a couple of minutes later after being originally fouled to bring the deficit back to four points.

Athy could get no closer though as Tyrrell kicked his sixth point of the game late on to round off a tenth county title for Moorefield.

Scorers for Moorefield: Adam Tyrrell 0-6 (0-3fs), Eddie Heavey 1-1, Mark McDermott 1-0, Niall Hurley Lynch 0-2, Eanna O’Connor 0-2 (0-1f), Ronan Sweeney 0-1

Scorers for Athy: Kevin Feely 2-0, Liam McGovern 0-4 (0-3fs), Niall Kelly 0-2, Sean Ronan 0-1, James Eaton 0-1, Cian Reynolds 0-1.

Geaney grabs hat-trick while Clifford is sent-off on contrasting day for Kerry forwards

Dingle 4-13
East Kerry 0-12

Paul Brennan reports from Austin Stack Park, Tralee

THREE GOALS IN the first 10 minutes of an eagerly anticipated Kerry SFC semi-final replay this afternoon paved the way for Dingle to book a county final meeting with champions Dr Crokes next Sunday back at the Tralee venue.

And on this performance the West Kerry team will give the defending champions plenty of it in seven days, even if East Kerry self-destructed in the second half when the game was still just about within their grasp.

It was an afternoon of contrasting fortunes for the Geaney and Clifford players involved, with Paul Geaney scoring a hat trick of goals, and his cousin Mikey getting the fourth, while the Clifford brothers, David and Paudie were both sent off for red card offences.

Having recovered from an 18-point loss to East Kerry in Round 2, Dingle found a late, late equaliser last week against the same opposition to take this semi-final to a replay, and the West Kerry club finished the job in emphatic fashion against the divisional side.

Paul Geaney was in devastating form for Dingle – having only returned on Saturday from a family wedding in Portugal on Friday – and his third minute goal from the penalty spot (he was fouled for it) and his second six minutes later gave Dingle the perfect start.

— Donal Barry (@BarryDonal) October 21, 2018

From the restart from Geaney’s second goal, Dingle won possession and raided forward for Michael Geaney to score a third goal to make it 3-1 to 0-3 after nine minutes and leave East Kerry reeling.

East Kerry never really settled into this contest, and though the Cliffords scored five first half points between them, they still trailed 0-7 to 3-7 at half time.

A big all-in row at the start of the second half resulted in a red card for Paudie Clifford and a member of each management team being sent off also, before East Kerry scored three points to make it 0-10 to 3-7 and give them a whisper of hope.

However, a momentary moment of rashness from David Clifford saw him strike out at an opponent and he followed his brother to the dressing room after 47 minutes, effectively ending any hope of an East Kerry comeback.

Dingle kicked on with the extra men, Paul Geaney scoring his third goal in the 53rd minute as Kerry defender Tom O’Sullivan finished with five points from play.

The West Kerry men are back in Tralee in a week’s time to face Dr Crokes in the final in a repeat of the 2012 decider, which Crokes won by 11 points. It shouldn’t be as one-sided this time.

Scorers for Dingle: Paul Geaney 3-1 (1-0 pen), Tom O’Sullivan 0-5, Michael Geaney 1-2 (0-1f), Tomas Sheehy 0-1f, Gavin Curran 0-1 ’45′, Barry O’Sullivan 0-1, Padraig O’Connor 0-1, Niall Geaney 0-1
