All-Ireland winning pair return to starting side for Clare’s 2017 senior hurling opener

Seadna Morey and Cathal McInerney both starting for Clare today.

Source: INPHO

A NEW ERA in Clare hurling begins today with joint managers Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor taking the reins at senior level for the first time in a competitive game.

The duo have succeeded Davy Fitzgerald and they’ve given several players that they coached to U21 success a chance to impress for their trip to face Kerry in the Munster senior hurling league today.

Seadna Morey and Cathal McInerney are notable recalls in defence and attack respectively. The team contains nine players who were involved in last year’s All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Galway.

Injuries have hit the 2013 All-Ireland senior winning pair Morey and McInerney in recent seasons with neither featuring in last summer’s championship. In 2015 McInerney was involved exclusively with the Clare footballers.

Defenders Eoin Quirke and Jason McCarthy, midfielder Kevin Hehir and wing-forward Cathal Malone are all handed starting spots as well.

McCarthy and Hehir were both U21 hurlers last year, while Quirke was part of the Clare team that reached the 2015 Munster U21 final.

Malone was an All-Ireland U21 winner in 2013, McInerney was part of the Clare side that triumphed in the 2012 All-Ireland U21 decider while Morey won three All-Ireland medals at that grade between 2012 and 2014.

Brendan Bugler, Colm Galvin and Podge Collins provide experience to the starting side while Cian Dillon, John Conlon and Shane O’Donnell are familiar names amongst the substitutes.

Clare are without several key players for the start of this year’s campaign due to club commitments, injuries and travelling.

7 goals for Cork hurlers as they cruise to 21-point victory over Limerick at Gaelic Grounds

Cork 7-22
Limerick 1-19

Jackie Cahill reports from Gaelic Grounds

KIERAN KINGSTON’S CORK went goal crazy against Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds – hammering SEVEN past the Shannonsiders in this afternoon’s Co-Op Superstores Munster senior hurling league clash.

The Rebels made light work of their opponents as All-Star nominee Alan Cadogan scored one and was involved in three of Cork’s goals.

Patrick Hogan and Shane Kingston helped themselves to a brace of green flags each while there were also majors for Luke Meade and Michael O’Halloran, who netted with his first involvement after coming on as a second half sub.

It may only be January but this is a worrying setback for Limerick, who face a trip to face Clare in Sixmilebridge on Wednesday.

In front of 1,625 spectators, Cork led comfortably at half-time, in mild but greasy conditions, on a 3-12 to 1-9 scoreline.

Goals proved crucial as Meade, Cadogan and Kingston, son of manager Kieran, netted in the first half.

Cadogan looked particularly lively inside while Mark Coleman also caught the eye with a couple of long-range scores from distance.

Limerick did get off to a decent start, Barry Nash netting in the third minute, but once Cork took over they gained a firm stranglehold on proceedings.

Approaching the break, Cork’s lead was ten points and they settled for a nine-point advantage at the break.

Cork’s opening goal was supplied by Meade in the 7th minute and it was a fine effort.

The Newcestown man brilliantly controlled Bill Cooper’s sideline cut before crashing a drive past Barry Hennessy.

Cadogan goaled in the 15th minute, collecting a lovely pass from Lorcán McLoughlin before skipping inside Richie English to find the net.

And Kingston finished off a fine team move five minutes before the break for Cork’s third green flag.

Limerick had Kevin O’Brien in good form early on but a much-changed team from the opening day victory over Waterford slumped after that bright opening.

Limerick did bring some big guns off the bench for the second half, including returning James Ryan and All-Star nominee Diarmaid Byrnes, but Cork didn’t let up.

Horgan goaled in the 39th minute after good work from Cadogan and goal number five had Cadogan’s stamp on it again, Mike Casey blocking his shot before Horgan applied a simple finish to the loose ball.

Cadogan placed Kingston, who took a lovely line of running to collect the pass, for a 53rd minute goal and the rout was complete when O’Halloran netted in the 59thminute, Horgan the creator this time.

Stephen McDonnell and his Cork teammates claimed a comfortable win today.

Up and running – new Clare bosses off to winning start with Collins netting against Kerry

Clare 2-24
Kerry 1-15

Eoin Brennan reports from Austin Stack Park, Tralee

A NEW CHAPTER for Clare hurling under three-in-a-row All-Ireland U21 winning duo Gerry O’Connor and Donal Moloney began on a winning note in Austin Stack Park, Tralee as they eventually pulled away from their hosts this afternoon in the Co-Op Superstores Munster SHL.

A goal in each half through Kevin Hehir and Podge Collins were enough to separate the sides as despite a consolation goal from Mikey Boyle, the Banner finished with eight of the last nine points to comfortably get off the mark for 2017.

After an even preamble, the visitors settled with five unanswered points, two from their most lively forward David Reidy, on their way to a 0-9 to 0-4 advantage by the 20th minute. Kerry also had goalkeeper Martin Stackpoole to thank for keeping them in touch, pulling off two superb saves to deny Reidy and Aron Shanagher.

Inspired by this along with the aid of a slight breeze, the hosts recovered fully by the 30th minute, mainly through Shane Nolan placed balls, with centre-back Pa Kelly providing the equalising score against his native county at 0-10 to 0-10. However, Clare quickly closed the door, with Kevin Hehir firing 1-1 to ensure a 1-12 to 0-11 interval lead.

Despite Kerry operating with a sweeper on the turnover, that goal would provide a comfortable cushion as Seadna Morey cut out any defensive threat.

Captain Podge Collins and home favourite Mikey Boyle swapped goals but with Clare expectedly finishing stronger, they fleshed out the final margin to provide a successful first defence of their Munster League title.

Scorers for Clare: David Reidy 0-10 (0-9f, 0-1’65); Podge Collins 1-3; Kevin Hehir 1-1; Cathal McInerney, Peter Duggan (0-1 pen) 0-2 each; Aaron Cunningham, Jason McCarthy, Cathal Malone, Seadna Morey, Aron Shanagher, Colm Galvin 0-1 each

Savage stars as Kerry defeat Cork to set up McGrath Cup final meeting with Limerick

Kerry 1-13
Cork 1-9

Denis Hurley reports from Mallow

A GOOD KERRY start meant that they never looked like being overhauled in qualifying for the McGrath Cup final at Mallow on Sunday afternoon, with victory over Cork setting up a meeting with Kerry.

Kerry’s Jack Barry was fouled by Cork goalkeeper Ken O’Halloran for a penalty.

Source: Cathal Noonan/INPHO

With both of these counties having beaten Tipperary, this was winner-takes-all, but a sparkling performance from the Kingdom’s full-forward Jack Savage underpinned a superior display from them.

While Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s side didn’t score in the final 12 minutes, their last point, from Barry John Keane, put them 1-13 to 0-8 in front.

Though Cork’s main scoring threat Niall Coakley would get a goal with ten minutes left – allied to five points – wastefulness in front of goal continued to be the Rebels’ undoing, as they finished with 13 wides.

The opening 15 minutes brought six unanswered Kerry points, Savage with four of them. Tadhg Morley and Jack Barry impressed at midfield for the visitors while early sub Brendan O’Sullivan also showed up well.

Kerry’s Jack Savage weighted in with 0-6 this afternoon.

Source: Cathal Noonan/INPHO

Though Coakley and Brian O’Driscoll got Cork off the mark, Kerry responded with a James O’Donoghue goal from a penalty after Ken O’Halloran had hauled Barry down.

Coakley did have a couple of Cork points in reply, but O’Donoghue’s third point left Kerry 1-8 to 0-5 ahead at half-time.

There was never much of an indication that the 1,505 crowd would see a comeback, though Cork did have a chance of engineering one when Kerry’s Brian Ó Beaglaioch’s foot-block on Mark Collins resulted in a penalty.

Coakley sent his shot wide and, while he did goal after that, Kerry weren’t to be denied.

Elsewhere Limerick got the job done with a 0-9 to 0-6 success over Waterford at Lemybrien to ensure that they finished top of Group 2.

It was a low scoring affair with the teams tied at 0-3 apiece at the interval but Limerick upped the ante in the second half.

They were inspired by Danny Neville as he struck 0-5 after the break to push Limerick into the ascendancy and new manager Billy Lee saw his charges hold on to triumph.

Dublin youngsters reach O’Byrne Cup semi-finals with Wexford success as DCU do them a favour

Tempers flared in the battle between Dublin and Wexford

Source: Donall Farmer/INPHO

DUBLIN’S YOUNGSTERS ADVANCED to the semi-finals of the Bord Na Móna O’Byrne Cup today with a 1-12 to 1-9 win over Wexford in Enniscorthy, while DCU did them a favour in defeating UCD in the battle of the students.

Dublin – who again fielded an experimental team under stand in manager Paul Clarke – claimed the three-point success to finish top of Group 1 and set up a last four tie with Kildare next Sunday.

The results saw Dublin top the group on four points with Wexford and UCD both rueing their failure to win as they finished up on three points.

UCD had overcome Dublin last Wednesday night in Parnell Park but lost today to DCU by 0-18 to 1-9 in Belfield.

Dublin may have suffered a first-half setback with the dismissal of forward Gary Sweeney but a goal by Conor McHugh helped them go ahead 1-7 to 1-4 at the interval.

First win for Mayo, 5 goals each for Galway and Sligo while Cavan and Monaghan stay unbeaten

Pick it out – Sean Armstrong hit the net for the Galway footballers today.

Source: James Crombie/INPHO

STEPHEN ROCHFORD SAW his Mayo team pick up their first win of the 2017 campaign today while Galway and Sligo both went on goalscoring sprees in their FBD League victories.

There was also a win in the Connacht pre-season arena for Roscommon while in the Dr McKenna Cup, Cavan and Monaghan are in pole positions in their groups while Down and Armagh face a winner-takes-all clash on Wednesday night.

In Ballina, Mayo saw off IT Sligo by 1-21 to 1-15 on a day when David Clarke captained the All-Ireland finalists and Donal Vaughan was sent-off in the finale.

It was 1-12 to 1-6 in Mayo’s favour at the break with IT Sligo having netted first through Claremorris’s James Shaughnessy, who was fouled himself and then slotted home the penalty.

Mayo respond through a goal from Alan Freeman and they pulled clear in the second half with Freeman, Cian Costello and Fergal Boland amongst their scorers.

Galway pulverised Leitrim by 5-21 to 0-9 in Ballinamore with the first three scores of the game all goals from the Tribesmen as Danny Cummins, Cillian McDaid and Paul Conroy netted inside the first six minutes.

Criostoir Davey and Brian Egan also raised green flags for Sligo while Shane Killoran grabbed the only goal of the game as Roscommon dismissed NUI Galway by 1-17 to 0-14.

In the Dr McKenna Cup, a 0-9 haul from Alan Davidson was vital in Down’s 0-15 to 0-14 success over Derry. In the same group, goals from Ethan Rafferty and Anto Duffy helped Armagh defeat Queen’s University, 2-19 to 0-9. Wednesday night’s game between these two sides will determine who tops Group A.

Tactic brings social media and the love of sport together for youngsters

WE LIVE IN a world where social media is omnipresent, while sport continues to capture the imagination of the masses.

Conor Duff is hopeful that his new product, Tactic, is the perfect meeting point between the two elements.

Tactic is a free web app that allows kids and teenagers to analyse games and training, converse with each other about their chosen sports and learn from their coaches.

Louth man Duff, who has a background in product design and the automotive industry, launched Tactic in 2015 and it went live in October of last year. It already has 400 users, but Duff and his team have plans to hit the 10,000 mark by early 2018.

Duff played rugby for 23 years and now coaches his 12-year-old son, meaning he has had regular insight into how youngsters engage with sport.

“Listening to the guys, they talk about sport in a different way than adults would. They don’t talk about data and percentages, they talk about how Messi flicks the ball or how Zebo passes. It’s really interesting how visual they are.

“There hasn’t really been a way for them to talk about sports visually. My son could come home from school and sit for two hours looking at YouTube, browsing videos of rugby, Gaelic and soccer.”

Tactic aims to give young players at grassroots levels a natural home for analysing and discussing their sporting interests, while it also serves as an extremely useful tool for the coaches of their teams.

How does Tactic work? Users first create a profile as they would on Facebook, adding their name, team, photo, and background image.

“Child protection is huge,” points out Duff. “Within Tactic, when a minor – an U14 – signs up, they have to provide a guardian email address and that means that when a coach follows a minor, an email is sent to the guardian just to inform them of it.

“There are a couple of structures there to keep it child-friendly.”

Once their profile is confirmed, the users can get stuck into analysing and reviewing footage of games. They can follow other users and channels, and get various notifications when new items of interest come online.

‘TeamTalks’ are a big part of Tactic, whereby users to create close groups with their real-life team-mates and coaches, allowing them to review footage of their own games and training sessions or learn from footage of professional teams in action.

The footage in Tactic comes from YouTube – simply by copying and pasting the URL of the relevant video – but there are plans for Tactic to host video itself in the future.

“Using YouTube means you can get lots of video of everything, but also the videos have already been screened, so there are restrictions there that are child-friendly,” explains Duff.

“A coach can upload their match or training session to YouTube, keep the video unlisted so it can’t be found, then bring it into Tactic and share it with their team.”

Coaches and players then use Tactic’s editing suite to analyse the footage, with a range simple tools such as lines, arrows, circles, text. Users can also add audio commentary over the footage.

One particularly interesting function is the ability to ask questions of other users in your TeamTalk.

“That’s a unique part of Tactic,” says Duff. “The clip pauses and the question pops up, ‘Where should he pass?’ for example, or, ‘Does he score?’

“That makes it fun for players because they’re engaging, but it’s also really educational because when you ask questions you’re trying to elicit information rather than telling them the answer, as any coach knows.

“When they do respond in the correct way, that’s a real plus for the player. They’re answering the questions, feeling good about it and also learning about the game.”

All comments from users in the TeamTalks are time-stamped to the relevant section of the video, meaning a cleaner experience.

“Whereas on YouTube, it’s just a spiel of comments, on Tactic it’s directed at a specific moment,” says Duff. “Everyone knows what everyone else is talking about.”

The target market for Tactic is 12 to 18-year-olds and they have rallied plenty of interest, with users in Ireland, the US and the UAE already signed up.

The GAA has shown a keen interest from the conception of Tactic up to the present day and Duff is hopeful that his product will be part of the Cúl Camps next summer. Duff demonstrated Tactic at the GAA’s Youth Forum last year, while he also showcased the product at the recent Coaches Forum, with many new users signing up that day.

The web app is free and will continue to be so.

“Kids don’t buy anything now, so it has to be free!” says Duff. “Not just the child, but the parent. If my 12-year-old asked me could he pay €2 a month to sign up, I’d probably say no. That’s a barrier now for any product. The same for coaches really.”

There are, however, plans for in-app purchases down the line, providing users with more advanced analysis tools specifically related their their chosen sport.

Tactic are also keen to link with sporting bodies and media organisations to provide users with the chance to subscribe to channels that allow them to view up-to-date footage.

“The idea would be that, say, RTÉ Sport, eir or TG4 would have a channel and users could subscribe,” says Duff.

“Lots of 12-year-olds miss the Sunday Game or Match of the Day, but if the footage was also on Tactic, kids could reuse and recycle that footage to learn about the game and enjoy it.”

As he and his team launch the next phase of their plans, Duff believes that Tactic can ensure players learn and love their sport even more, while he hopes that it will help keep more sportspeople in the game for longer.

“Off the field, there hasn’t been a place like this where you can talk to your team-mates about the game and share videos of your sport. I’d love if those 12 to 16-year-olds used it to share and interact, building that team ethic.

“Some of the kids who aren’t brilliant at playing the sport may be excellent at reading the game. That person could be known as the analyst within the team, lead those TeamTalks and share it with their team-mates.

“Hopefully, it will keep players more involved and engaged with the sport at times when they might be thinking of dropping out. Sport isn’t always about the playing out on the pitch. For kids, it’s more about that social aspect and having craic with your friends talking about the sport.

“There’s much more to sport than the 80 minutes on the pitch.”
