Two decades on from Wexford’s All-Ireland glory and now trying to solve GAA’s club fixture crisis

Wexford’s 1996 All-Ireland winning manager Liam Griffin

IT’S JUST OVER 20 years since he steered Wexford to their last golden September day in Croke Park.

Now Liam Griffin wants to help solve a problem that has been afflicting the GAA since his youth – the scheduling of club fixtures in a frequent and efficient fashion.

He was happy to join the Club Players Association – founded by Monaghan’s Declan Brennan – that are trying to tackle the issue.

“I see this as positive discontent where we are now. I don’t see it as adversarial,” outlined Griffin, when speaking passionately at the launch in Ballyboden St-Enda’s yesterday.

Griffin was attracted to getting involved with the new organisation on the proviso that it was voluntary and unpaid.

But he doesn’t want to see players resort to the nuclear option of going on strike

“No I wouldn’t. For the simple reason I want fellas to play games, I don’t want to stop them playing games.

“I don’t want to see a situation where we take games away, I want to work in a meaningful way.

“I think we can improve the inter-county and improve the club at the same time in a parallel universe. Why not?

“If it’s nearly doable within a year as it is at the moment in a piecemeal bad fashion then it is therefore doable in an organised fashion.”

Trio of Donegal All-Ireland winners announce their retirement from inter-county football

DONEGAL BOSS RORY Gallagher has confirmed that three more members of the 2012 All-Ireland winning team have played their last game for the county.

Source: Inpho

Rory Kavanagh, Christy Toye and David Walsh have all retired from the inter-county game, Gallagher confirmed during a briefing with the local media in the Villa Rosa Hotel in Ballybofey on Tuesday afternoon.

The trio follow Eamon McGee and Colm McFadden in retiring from Donegal duty, while Leo McLoone (27) and Odhran MacNiallais (24) have also made themselves unavailable for the county in the coming season.

Earlier today Anthony Thompson (30) revealed he is unable to commit to the squad for personal reasons, but left the door open for a possible return at a later stage of the National League.

Toye was Donegal’s longest serving footballer, while Kavanagh previously walked away after the 2014 All-Ireland final, before he returned to the fray a year later.

The Donegal manager added that Neil Gallagher is unlikely to feature in the coming league campaign as he recovers from a back injury.

‘The whole energy of the game is dropping and falling away and it’s just sad to see’

Derek Kavanagh was an All-Ireland winner with Cork in 2010

Source: Billy Stickland/INPHO

DEREK KAVANAGH FINALLY became an All-Ireland senior football winner at 30 but retired shortly after, an example of a player struck down through injury by a system that encourages training over playing games.

Two years later, he was done with club football with Nemo Rangers as he needed a hip replacement.

Slipping into a club coaching role afterwards was designed to keep him involved in Gaelic football but the maddening and frustrating struggles of preparing a club team, soon began to grate.

He’s to the forefront of the newly-formed Club Players Association that are trying to find a solution to the problem and has issued a stark warning of the current state of club GAA.

“The whole energy of the game is dropping and falling away and it’s just sad to see.”

Source: The42.ie/YouTube

His own county Cork is an example of one faces the headache of accommodating dual players yet Kavanagh feels that can’t deflect from the problem created by the absence of a reliable fixture list.

“The end result is players are walking away in their masses and it’s damaging the game.”

Source: The42.ie/YouTube

He’s attempted to make headway on the issue before by tabling a motion – that got passed at the Cork GAA Convention – to bring forward the date of the All-Ireland finals, to free up more room for club fixtures.

The motion was shot down subsequently at GAA Congress yet he’s confident that the new group can help support future club motions designed to help the problem.

1-10 return from teenage forward Burke helps Dublin to victory and Walsh Cup table top spot

Na Fianna’s Donal Burke struck 1-10 for Dublin tonight.

Dublin 2-26
UCD 0-21

Paul Keane reports from Parnell Park

HOLDERS DUBLIN ARE sitting pretty in Group 3 of the Bord na Mona Walsh Cup after a Donal Burke inspired win at Parnell Park.

Last year’s Dubs minor attacker helped himself to 1-10 and backed up his strong showing in the Round 1 win over Carlow.

It’s two wins out of two now in the Walsh Cup for the Dublin hurlers.

Source: Tommy Dickson/INPHO

The Na Fianna youngster formed an effective full-forward line partnership with Cian O’Sullivan who was a minor last year too and scored an excellent first-half goal here.

UCD started the brighter and moved 0-4 to 0-1 clear after 10 minutes but were dominated by Ger Cunningham’s hosts for the remainder of the first-half.

Burke began a burst of seven points in a row for the Sky Blues and O’Sullivan netted in the 32nd minute to put them in a strong position.

Naomh Brid teenager O’Sullivan scored a fine solo goal against Carlow and repeated the trick this time but on the opposite right wing after fetching a long ball from defence.

Dublin led 1-15 to 0-11 at the break though Nicky English’s students improved after the restart with All-Ireland winning Waterford U-21 star DJ Foran taking his tally to double figures by the 50th minute.

That helped the Belfield outfit to get the margin down to just five points but Dublin responded with three points in a row before Burke added the insurance second goal five minutes from time.

Sub Sean O Riain was hauled down and Burke expertly converted while Caolan Conway and the Quinn brothers, Alex and Ben, hit fine points.

Dublin followed up last week’s win over Carlow tonight.

Coakley fires two goals as Cork open McGrath Cup with 16-point win over Tipperary

Cork 2-22
Tipperary 1-9

Jackie Cahill reports from Templetuohy

PEADAR HEALY’S CORK opened the defence of their McGrath Cup title with a massive 16-point victory over Tipperary in Templetuohy this evening.

Two goals tonight in the McGrath Cup for Carrigaline native Niall Coakley.

Source: James Crombie/INPHO

The Rebels were too good as Dublin-based Niall Coakley bagged 2-3 and sub Kevin Davis landed six points.

It was an accomplished display from Cork as Tipp slumped to a second big defeat in four days, following last Sunday’s hammering against a Kerry U21 selection in Tralee.

Coakley, the former Carrigaline player now based with St Judes in the capital, scored three points in the recent Dubs Stars annual challenge.

And he looked good in Cork colours this evening – netting in both halves.

Coakley’s 22nd-minute goal helped Cork lead by 1-12 to 1-4 at half-time. They were 11 points clear before Alan Moloney netted in stoppage time at the end of the first half for the hosts.

Sean Powter helped Cork claim a 16-point victory tonight.

Source: James Crombie/INPHO

To their credit, Tipp did make a fight of it in the second half and had the deficit down to six points before Cork scored 1-7 without reply in the closing minutes.

Coakley’s second goal, ten minutes from time, put the end result beyond any doubt but boss Healy will be concerned by injuries that forced Kevin O’Driscoll and debutant Cian Dorgan off early.

Tipp had good displays from Liam Boland and Liam McGrath, the 2011 All-Ireland minor winning skipper, up front but they fell to a second heavy loss in four days.

And Robbie Kiely, black-carded against Mayo in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, suffered a similar fate with 11 minutes left.

Cork boss Peadar Healy watched his team triumph tonight

Source: James Crombie/INPHO

The result means Cork’s game against Kerry next Sunday in Mallow will decided who advances from Group A to the McGrath Cup final.

Meanwhile in Group B tonight, Limerick won in their first outing of the season as they defeated Clare by four points at St Patrick’s GAA club.

The 2-13 to 2-9 victory came against a Clare team who saw off Waterford last Sunday and means that if Limerick are successful against the Deise next Sunday in Lemybrien, they will seal a final place.

Seamus O’Carroll and Darragh Treacy netted for the winners tonight, who were 1-5 to 0-7 ahead at the interval and in front 2-7 to 0-7 with 15 minutes remaining.

Clare grabbed two goals in the closing stages courtesy of Eoin Cleary and Cian O’Dea but Limerick held on to take the spoils.

35-point win for Kildare in O’Byrne Cup while Meath and Laois on course for battle to reach semi-finals

It was Kildare who gave the performance of the night in the group stages as they handed out a 35-point beating to the students of IT Carlow to win 4-24 to 0-1 tonight. David Slattery, Cathal McNally, Neil Flynn and Tommy Moolick all netted for the Lilywhites.

They’re top of Group 2 on four points and only need a point from Sunday’s clash against Offaly. The Faithful county are on two points along with Longford, who defeated Offaly tonight by 2-9 to 0-11.

In Group 3, Saturday night’s game between Laois and Meath in Stradbally will be decisive after both picked up their second win tonight. In Group 4, Louth enjoyed their second pre-season victory with a 1-13 to 1-8 success against Maynooth University. They are top on four points, ahead of Westmeath and Carlow. It finished 2-15 to 1-15 in Wesmeath’s favour tonight against Carlow.

Jack McCaffrey key to victory over Dublin as UCD take the spoils in O’Byrne Cup tie

UCD 2-9
Dublin 1-10

Paul Keane reports from Parnell Park

DUBLIN STAR JACK McCaffrey put sentiment to one side to play a key role in UCD’s Bord na Mona O’Byrne Cup win at Parnell Park, the Sky Blues’ first competitive defeat in almost a year.

McCaffrey, the 2015 Footballer of the Year, didn’t play for Dublin in 2016 but will return to the panel for the Allianz league following his college commitments in the pre-season competition with UCD.

He impressed against Wexford in Round 1 and made two key interventions this evening to ensure that his own county didn’t rescue anything from the game.

McCaffrey first pointed an insurance score before clearing a goalbound effort off the line deep into injury-time when a goal for Dublin would have drawn the game.

Dublin fell short by two points tonight in Parnell Park

Source: Tommy Dickson/INPHO

It resulted in a win for UCD to leave them sitting pretty in Group 1 though Dublin will still travel to Wexford on Sunday in search of a win.

Substitute Sean Meade proved to be the game breaker with a 63rd minute goal for UCD when there was just a point in it.

Dublin fell 1-6 to 0-1 down after a terrible start that yielded seven wides while UCD, in contrast, were clinical with free-taker Eoin Lowry punishing slack Dublin defending and Tom Hayes swooped for a 28th minute goal.

UCD dominated the early exchanges against Dublin tonight.

Paul Hudson scored Dublin’s first point after 31 minutes and it was followed by a Maitias MacDonncha goal to leave the Dubs just 1-1 to 1-6 at half-time when it should have been even worse.

Paul Clarke, standing in for Jim Gavin as boss due to the back to back All-Ireland champions team holiday in Jamaica, witnessed a much improved second-half.

Dublin hit four points in a row at one stage, including two from Shane Cunningham, and braved the loss of Jason Whelan to a black card. They got it back to just a single point with seven minutes to go but that Meade goal and McCaffrey’s interventions ensured that Sigerson Cup holders UCD escaped to victory.

2013 Munster final man-of-the-match is back for another year with Limerick

LIMERICK’S JAMES RYAN has returned to the senior hurling panel for 2017, according to the Limerick Leader.

The 2013 Munster winning player was initially omitted from the first panel which was announced in November 2016, to allow him some time to consider his inter-county future.

Under new manager John Kiely, Ryan has confirmed his commitment to the squad for 2017, while Kilmallock’s Robbie Egan has withdrawn from the panel for personal reasons.

Ryan, who made his senior inter-county debut in 2008, earned the man-of-the-match award in Limerick’s Munster final triumph over Cork in 2013.

The Garryspillane man’s return means that Paudie O’Brien and David Reidy are now the only players who were used during last year’s championship that are no longer involved.

The Limerick management now have a panel of 41 players.
