They went on to progress through Leinster with wins over Laois club Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton, Carlow’s St Mullins and in the decider, Kilkenny’s O’Loughlin Gaels.

Cian lined out at wing-forward on the team managed by Galway’s Mattie Kenny with Naoise a member of the panel.

Cuala are bidding next month to become the first Dublin side to reach the All-Ireland senior club hurling final.

Why changing the date of the All-Ireland finals is key to helping club fixture chaos

Aaron Kernan and Declan Brennan at the launch of the Club Players Association today.

Source: Ryan Byrne/INPHO

STAGING THE ALL-Ireland finals on the August Bank Holiday weekend and condensing the provincial championships are some of the proposals that the new GAA Club Players Association feel can help the current problems which are crippling club players all over the country.

The new organisation was officially launched this morning in Ballyboden St-Enda’s GAA club in Dublin with ex inter-county footballers like Armagh’s Aaron Kernan, Cork’s Derek Kavanagh, Dublin’s Kevin Nolan and Donegal’s Martin McHugh involved along with recently retired Dublin hurler Niall Corcoran and Wexford’s 1996 All-Ireland winning manager Liam Griffin.

Monaghan man Declan Brennan, the secretary and founder of the CPA, outlined in a passionate speech how it is crucial that the inter-county season is shortened.

He insists that in order to sort out the club fixtures mess that players face, the All-Ireland finals must be brought ‘way back’ from their traditional September dates and explained his own personal preference would be to schedule them on the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The new group believes that the shortening of the provincial championships is vital. They point out the current flaws whereby the winner of the Ulster senior football championship can play a maximum of four games in nine weeks and how Kilkenny have won All-Ireland titles, playing four games between May and September.

‘We feel this is as an important a day as when the association was formed,” stated Brennan.

The Clontibret native also insisted that there would be ‘no jobs for the boys’ in their new organisation and that they were motivated by passion and a desire to change.

The long winter wait for the All-Ireland club series and Dublin GAA grassroots problems

Aaron Kernan (Crossmaglen Rangers) and Kevin Nolan (Kilmacud Crokes) are both former All-Ireland club winners

BOTH FORMER INTER-county senior footballers, both former All-Ireland senior club winners and both well placed to speak on the club v county fixture conflict in the GAA.

Armagh’s Aaron Kernan and Dublin’s Kevin Nolan both tasted St Patrick’s Day glory with their respective clubs Crossmaglen Rangers and Kilmacud Crokes in Croke Park.

They’re now back at the coalface of the game after their inter-county careers have ended and they’re experiencing the same onslaught of problems as other grassroots players around the country.

So they’ve got involved with the Club Players Association – which was officially launched today – to try to do something about it and find a solution.

Kernan has identified a pressing problem in his view. He’s won a bunch of Ulster senior club titles with Crossmaglen but then every winter has had to endure a long wait after that triumph until the All-Ireland series the following spring.

Of this year’s All-Ireland semi-finalists, both Dr Crokes and Corofin have an 11-week bout of inactivity while St Vincent’s and Slaughtneil’s hiatus will be nine weeks.

Something must be done, reckons Kernan.

Source: The42.ie/YouTube

For Nolan, participating in the Dublin club championship has seen him witness the problems at local level in the capital.

His club Kilmacud Crokes dumped out the reigning All-Ireland club champions Ballyboden St-Enda’s last October yet the backdrop was that both sides were in action just a week after Dublin’s All-Ireland final replay win.

Placing the club championship on cold storage while Dublin are in inter-county senior mode, creates several issues. Club players end up having different pre-seasons in order to reach peak fitness and have been lying idle all summer.

The championship ends up being played in a blitz format from October on and that’s tough as well on All-Ireland winners who must return to action within days of lifting Sam.

“I want to play matches,” said Nolan.

“I don’t want to train to train. If I did, I’d just go and join the local gym, get fit myself. But I want to play games. I think everyone who is involved in the GAA, that’s what we want to do.”

Shields returns to Cork senior side for Tipp clash as Munster U21 winners handed starts

CORK’S DEFENCE OF the McGrath Cup gets underway on Wednesday night, and manager Peadar Healy has opted for an experienced XV to take on Tipperary.

The Rebels recall Michael Shields, who was released from the panel after last year’s league, along with goalkeeper Ken O’Halloran.

The Cork management insisted at the time that a breach of discipline was not behind the departure. Shields starts at corner back tomorrow night while O’Halloran is named on the bench.

A bunch of players who won Munster U21 medals last season and contested the All-Ireland final against Mayo, are also included.

Stephen Cronin, Sean Powter and Peter Kelleher all saw game time in last year’s senior championship while full-back John Mullins and corner-forward Cian Dorgan are handed debuts.

Mullins was at the edge of the square for the Cork U21′s last year while Dorgan kicked the winning point in last year’s Munster U21 final.

Former UCC defender Conor Dorman starts at number 6 after an injury-hampered 2016, while talented duo Ian Maguire and Ruairi Deane pair up in midfield.

Tipperary lost by 14 points to what was effectively Kerry’s U21 side in their opening game of the competition.

The game starts at 7.30pm in Dr. Morris Park tomorrow night.

The tiny island of Inishbofin had two Galway senior football debutants on Sunday

ONE OF THE smallest GAA communities in the country has double reason for celebration after two of their players made their senior inter-county debut on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Ruairi Lavelle and midfielder Michael Day made their senior bows with Galway, completing a journey which began on the small island of Inishbofin which doesn’t even have enough numbers to have their own club.

The island, whose permanent population fluctuates between about 150-170 depending on work and studies, is located off the north Galway coast.

But there were big celebrations on the island on Sunday when the two players, both of whom played underage for Galway, became the first from the island to play senior inter-county football when they lined out for the Tribesmen in their 0-13 to 0-10 win over Sligo in the FBD League at Enniscrone.

A small contingent from the island, led by Ruairi’s father Henry Kenny, travelled from the island for the game, starting out early on Sunday morning with a 35-minute boat trip to Cleggan and then a car journey of almost three hours to the coastal Sligo venue. Other islanders travelled from the mainland for the occasion.

“It’s an historic occasion, a great day for the island and for the lads themselves. They have worked very hard to get this far so it’s great to get to see them play,” said Henry Kenny.

Galway manager Kevin Walsh also paid tribute to the two 22-year old islanders, both of whom played well in the victory.

“Some lads have to work that bit harder to make it, some have to deal with obstacles which others don’t encounter so fair play to them, they are here on merit.

“We have tried to cast the net as wide as possible. It’s what football and the GAA is all about. Hopefully the two lads and all the other new players push on from here,” said Walsh.

Michael Day moved to the mainland when he was younger and Lavelle, an accomplished soccer player, also moved for study but they are back on the island at every opportunity and are very proud of their heritage.

Day plays his club football with Headford, while Lavelle joined the nearest GAA club to Inishbofin, the Renville club in west Connemara who play in the junior championship.

“I’m just delighted to get the start,” said Lavelle. “We’ve been training hard now over the last couple of months. We’ve put the work in and I was just happy out to get the call and we’ll build from here.

“Kevin is trying to give everyone a chance. We’re glad we got our chance today. We took it and we did well enough and we’ll build on this.”

Day said that Lavelle and himself have played together up through the grades and that it was superb to make their senior debut together.

“The two of us played minor and we played two years at U21 with Galway. He played with St Mary’s in school and I played in Headford. Lucky enough we kind of kept it going.

“We were on similar teams, we’re the same age, so it was brilliant for the two of us just coming through. Two good mates growing up and it just made it different to transition through from minor to U21 and now to senior and hopefully things will keep coming from it.”

He said it was brilliant to see so many ‘Bofin people at the match, those who travelled from the island and the mainland.

“It’s brilliant day for the island. There are a lot of people proud of us at home and that makes it much easier as well when we’re getting that support from home. It drives you on.

“To be saying that there are two lads from an island of 150 people, it’s a great achievement from the two of us and we’re delighted to wear that badge of the island,” added Day.

Early season cruciate blow for Tyrone as attacker ruled out for 2017 season

TYRONE HAVE BEEN handed a blow with the news that Connor McAliskey is set to miss the entirety of the 2017 season.

BBC Northern Ireland reports that McAliskey received the news after undergoing scans at the Ulster Clinic in Belfast yesterday

The 26-year-old attacker ruptured a cruciate ligament during last weekend’s Dr McKenna Cup loss to Cavan.

It’s a setback for manager Mickey Harte early in the season to be robbed of the services of an attacker that has been a regular in his team in recent campaigns. McAliskey made his 60th appearance for the Tyrone senior footballers in last Sunday’s game.

Last year McAliskey was a key part of Tyrone’s successes. He shot 0-3 in the Dr McKenna Cup final victory, 0-5 in April’s Division 2 football league final triumph over Cavan in Croke Park and then picked up an Ulster medal with July’s success against Donegal.

Tyrone bowed out of the championship at the hands of Mayo but McAliskey chipped in with 0-2 in that defeat at the quarter-final stage.

Tyrone experienced further injury woes last Sunday with Michael Cassidy, Rory Brennan and Ronan O’Neill all picking up knocks in the defeat to Cavan, while Mattie Donnelly is suspended having received a straight red card late on in the Cavan defeat.

Last weekend’s loss also means that Mickey Harte’s side need to win their remaining games against Donegal and UUJ in order to progress to the semi-finals of the McKenna Cup.
