Kerry unveil young side for McGrath Cup opener against Tipperary

JACK O’CONNOR HAS named an inexperienced Kerry side to face Tipperary in tomorrow’s McGrath Cup round one clash in Tralee’s Austin Stack Park. [Throw-in at 2pm]

The Kerry seniors only resumed training last Tuesday night, so O’Connor and his U21 management team take charge of the Kingdom’s seasonal debut. They’ve named a squad drawn entirely from the county’s U21 panel.

Brian Ó Beaglaoich starts at wing back and is the most recognisable name included, having enjoyed game-time with Kerry seniors last summer.

But Eamonn Fitzmaurice will no doubt be closely watching the performances of goalkeeper Shane Ryan, defenders Jason Foley and Daniel O’Brien, and corner-forward Conor Geaney.

Incidentally, Ryan gave a man of the match display against county champions Dr Crokes in the O’Donoghue Cup final last month, scoring three points from full forward.

Matthew O’Sullivan will captain the side against Tipperary, but Kerry also confirmed that Crokes will wait until after their interest in the All-Ireland club campaign ends before they name the new Kerry senior captain. As a result Fitzmaurice is expected to appoint an interim skipper in the near future.

Tipperary boss Liam Kearns has also announced his starting 15 for the game.

A pair of last year’s Young Footballer of the Year nominees, Josh Keane and Jimmy Feehan, start in the middle third, in a team that includes Kevin Fahey, Liam Casey, Martin Dunne and Jason Lonergan.

Kearns has named three 2015 All-Star nominees, Evan Comerford, Conor Sweeney and Robbie Kiely, on an extremely strong bench.

Dublin stars on holiday in Jamaica but fringe players get job done to beat DCU in Parnell Park

Dublin 1-15
DCU 0-11

Paul Keane reports from Parnell Park

OLD HABITS CLEARLY die hard for back to back All-Ireland champions Dublin whose fringe players still trounced DCU in the Bord na Mona O’Byrne Cup this afternoon.

Boss Jim Gavin and his Sam Maguire Cup winning stars are on holidays so Paul Clarke stood in and guided an experimental side to an opening day Group 1 win.

Dublin had nobody from last year’s Championship panel in action but found inspiration in Niall Walsh, Paul Hudson and Michael Deegan who impressed in attack.

Hudson top scored with 1-3 while Deegan chipped in 0-4 and Walsh provided the creativity from the half-forward line and covered the hard yards around the field.

Niall Walsh struck a point for Dublin

Goalkeeper Evan Comerford saved a 29th minute penalty in Stephen Cluxton’s absence while Shane Cunningham from Kilmacud Crokes came on and kicked two fine points.

DCU are gearing up for the Sigerson Cup and play Queens University later this month but trailed from gun to tape in a surprisingly predictable encounter.

Deegan, son of Dubs legend Mick, got another chance at this stage of the year and was excellent early on, scoring two points and laying on another.

Former U21 Conor McHugh, fresh from a strong performance in the Dubs Stars annual challenge, kicked two first-half points also while Hudson’s goal arrived shortly before the break.

Walsh did well in the build up and Hudson applied the left footed finish to push Dublin 1-9 to 0-5 up at half-time.

Dublin also hit nine first-half wides so were at their ease and cruised to victory with second-half points from Hudson, Walsh, Gavin Ivory, Deegan and Cunningham.

Both teams took advantage of the unlimited subs arrangement for the competition with Dublin making seven substitutions and DCU nine overall.

Young forwards point the way as Cork hurlers claim opening day win over Kerry

Cork 1-28
Kerry 0-18

Denis Hurley reports from Mallow

WHILE THEY WERE tested at times, Cork eventually pulled away to comfortably see off Kerry in the opening round of the Coop Superstores Munster SHL at Mallow on Sunday afternoon.

Leading by 1-12 to 0-14 at half-time, Kieran Kingston’s actually fell behind on the resumption as Shane Nolan – who would finish with nine points in all – added two for Kerry.

Fintan O’Connor’s visitors would only score twice more, however, as Cork began to find a rhythm and pulled away.

Wing-forward Shane Kingston, son of the manager, impressed at times for the Rebels, scoring nine points, while corner-forwards Darragh Fitzgibbon and Michael Cahalane also had their moments. The concession of 14 first-half points will be a worry, though.

The goal came from Fitzgibbon in the 15th minute, profiting from good work by Séamus Harnedy and Kingston to make it 1-5 to 0-4, but Nolan and O’Leary ensured that Kerry kept Cork within their sights up until the interval.

They had a glimmer of an upset when Nolan put them in front, but a Kingston double, and a long-range free from wing-back Mark Coleman, restored Cork’s lead.

Sub Luke Meade also got in on the scoring act while Cahalane was only denied by a good Aidan McCabe save as he finished with four points. Cork now face Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds next Sunday.

Fitzgibbon and Dempsey key in helping new Limerick boss claim win over Waterford

Limerick 0-24
Waterford 1-14

Thomas Keane reports from Walsh Park

LIMERICK PROVED TOO strong for an under-strength Waterford side in the first round of the Coop Superstores Munster Senior Hurling League at Fraher Field this afternoon as new manager John Kiely got off to a winning start.

John Fitzgibbon and Alan Dempsey were the scoring stars for Limerick as they weighed in with a combined haul of 0-15.

Waterford started brightly in the first half going five points up with just ten minutes played.

Limerick however came more into the game as the first half progressed and at the break they were just three points behind 1-10 to 0-10.

The only goal of the game came on seventeen minutes when Stephen Bennett found DJ Foran who went high to catch over his head and when he went through on Nickie Quaid, he made no mistake.

In the second half Limerick proved no match for Waterford as they powered their way to a comfortable seven points victory.

Fitzgibbon, Dempsey, Sean Tobin and Gearoid Hegerty found scores with ease when they were presented with chances.

For Waterford Billy Nolan on his competitive debut proved to their busiest player on the day, hitting six points with three of those coming from frees.

Forward DJ Foran also impressed for the home side as he bagged 1-1.

Jack O’Connor’s Kerry U21’s issue statement of intent with McGrath Cup success over Tipp

Kerry 3-11
Tipperary 1-3

Paul Brennan reports from Austin Stack Park

KERRY FOOTBALL MANAGER Eamonn Fitzmaurice might want to reappraise his intention to field a senior team against Cork next Sunday given how admirably an U21 selection coped with beating Tipperary in a rather one-sided McGrath Cup match in Tralee this afternoon.

Kerry hit the net three times en route to today’s victory

Source: Gary Carr/INPHO

Fitzmaurice had wanted to have an early season look at a few of Jack O’Connor’s U21′s ahead of next month’s Allianz League, so the two managers decided on fielding an entire U21 team, under O’Connor’s watch.

Deciding on who to take to Mallow next Sunday and who to leave at home might well be Fitzmaurice’s toughest job this week

Given that Tipperary started with seven of the team that played that All-Ireland semi-final last August, manager Liam Kearns might have at least expected some hum and hustle from his team given last year’s celebrated run.

Instead it was Kerry’s callow side that displayed all the energy and endeavour on show. O’Connor’s teams never lack for honesty and industry, but this team came with much more to prove and with more than an eye on March’s Munster U21 Championship they went about their business with serious intent.

Cathal Bambury scored a Kerry point from their first attack, and as the rain sheeted down Kerry set the rhythm.

Diarmuid Foley’s coolly dispatched eighth minute goal brought the visitors into the game but Kerry scored six of the next seven points before Matthew O’Sullivan won a penalty off Paddy Codd, which Bambury placed down the middle of the goal.

Dingle’s Cathal Bambury found the net for Kerry

Sean O’Shea converted a ’45′ and Kevin Fahey scored his second from wing back to make it 1-8 to 1-2 in Kerry’s favour at the break.

Shane Ryan saved smartly from Alan Moloney in the 38th minute to deny Tipperary a way back into the contest, and when Matthew O’Sullivan fisted Bambury’s pass to the net six minutes later Tipp’s day was done.

The final 22 minutes yielded just four more points as the game ran to its inevitable conclusion, but O’Sullivan helped himself to a second goal when he palmed Ivan Parker’s inviting pass beyond Evan Comerford.

O’Connor would surely love to send his team out against Cork next week but Fitzmaurice will field a senior selection in Mallow, where a win would put them into the McGrath Cup final. Deciding which U21′s to blend into that team will exercise all concerned.

Kerry’s Brian Ó Seanacháin with Tipperary’s Martin Dunne

Source: Tommy Dickson/INPHO

As for the new ‘mark’ rule, it left little impact in Tralee. Conor Lane blew for two, maybe three, marks but the game carried on as if nothing had happened.

Maybe that’s as it should be, but an unremarkable start for the mark in Kerry at least.

Kerry U21 selector Declan O’Sullivan

Scorers for Kerry: Matthew O’Sullivan 2-0, Cathal Bambury 1-1 (1-0 pen), Sean O’Shea 0-3 (0-1f, 0-1 ’45′), Tom O’Sullivan, Conor Geaney (0-1f) 0-2 each, Barry O’Sullivan, Matthew Flaherty, Cormac Coffey 0-1 each.

Waterford 0-8

Today’s other McGrath Cup clash saw last year’s finalists Clare see off Waterford in Meelick by five points.

Colm Collins side now take on Limerick on Wednesday night at the Gaelic Grounds in the knowledge that a victory there will propel them into the final of the pre-season competition in Munster.

10 debutants in Mayo side as they lose out narrowly in early season clash with NUI Galway

Mayo’s Fergal Boland and NUIG’s Damien Comer both scored impressively today.

NUI Galway 1-21
Mayo 2-16

Colm Gannon reports from Elverys MacHale Park

A MAKESHIFT MAYO team with ten debutants in their starting line-up got their 2017 season underway with a two point defeat to NUI Galway in MacHale Park this afternoon.

With the majority of the Mayo squad on holidays in South Africa, there was a chance for the All-Ireland finalists to experiment.

In a high scoring encounter the students ran out 1-21 to 2-16 winners, with Mayo’s James Durcan having a goal chance right at the end of the game only to hit it straight at NUIG keeper’ Tadgh O’Malley.

The sides went in locked level at half time on a score of 2-7 to 0-13, with Neil Douglas and Danny Kirby finding the net for Stephen Rochford’s side in the opening half.

The two goals came in a six minute period in the final ten minutes of the half with Douglas hitting the net from the penalty spot after he was fouled by James Kennedy.

The students hit a number of big scores from distance with Enda Tierney and Damien Comer hitting three points each in the opening 35 minutes and Mayo man Adam Gallagher kicking four in an impressive display from the Mayo Abbey club man, which saw him finish up with nine points over the 70 minutes.

Mayo went into an early three point lead after the resumption, but following a flurry of points from the students in reply and a Damien Comer goal on 45 minutes it was case of catch up for Mayo.

With 20 minutes to go, Mayo were reduced to 14 men when Ray O’Malley picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Comer. When the Galway star kicked his fourth point of the day with 52 minutes gone it put the students clear by six points on a score of 1-19 to 2-10.

Mayo pegged the gap back as time ticked on and Neil Douglas tapped over a free three minutes into injury time to cut the gap to two points, but Maurice Sheridan’s men held on for victory.

New Meath and Cavan bosses begin 2017 with success but early injury worry for Tyrone

THE NEW MEATH and Cavan managers began their inter-county reigns on a triumphant note this afternoon but it was a bad start to the season for Tyrone with a potentially serious injury to attacker Connor McAliskey.

Andy McEntee saw his Meath charges storm to a comprehensive win over Wicklow in the O’Byrne Cup while Cavan boss Mattie McGleenan steered his team to a success over his native Tyrone in the Dr McKenna Cup.

Cillian O’Sullivan and Bryan McMahon fired home the goals for a Meath team that were in front 1-13 to 0-2 at the midway mark in Navan.

At Kingspan Breffni Park, both teams finished with 14 men as Tyrone’s Mattie Donnelly and Cavan’s Niall McDermott were dismissed.
