‘Winning a match wasn’t a triumph, losing a match wasn’t a disaster’: Mick O’Connell remembers his career at 80 years of age

KERRY FOOTBALLING LEGEND Mick O’Connell celebrated his 80th birthday today and even after all these years, he continues to reflect on his historic career with modesty.

O’Connell created a legacy throughout the duration of his years in the Kerry jersey and his name is synonymous with all the greats of the game.

But speaking to Ger Gilroy and Joe Molloy on this evening’s ‘Off The Ball,’ he declined to look back at his career in those terms.

In fact, he rejected the notion that his playing days could even be defined as a career and considers it a “pastime” which his lifestyle could accommodate.

“To me, I grew up when football was a pastime and you played at weekends with a bit of practice during the week, and everything else was incidental. There were more important things to be doing and that’s the background that I came from.

Triumph and disaster came the same to me. (If) you won a match, it wasn’t a triumph, losing a match wasn’t a disaster. That was my thinking of the game and I make no apologies about it.”

“There were other things more important to me than football. I played football first of all, because I liked it. If I was born somewhere else, it probably would have been soccer or something else but Gaelic was the game in this locality, I happened to play it by accident.

“There was no such thing as the number one aim in my life to play football. It was purely incidental.

Later in the conversation, Gilroy goes on to reference O’Connell’s famous routine of rowing over and back from his home place in Valentia Island, and suggested that it was an ideal form of exercise to compliment his football training.

Happy 80th birthday to Mick O'Connell. He never sought the glory we Kerry people heaped on him. A true star.

O’Connell however, didn’t agree.

“Football and rowing had no association.

“There were far more greater difficulties than rowing over and back. Other people had to bring cattle, horses and things across – I was doing it for pleasure and a pastime.”

While recalling his experiences as a footballer, O’Connell emphasised the importance of perfecting the skills from a young age and said that his personal training regime on the island, simply consisted of “running, jumping and a bit of climbing.”

Molloy inquired about O’Connell’s great passion in life. But again, he had a simple response.

“Passion in life? None whatsoever. Playing football afforded me the chance to do exercise and play games locally and sometimes in Dublin. It was a nice way of associating with other people.”

Liam Rushe sent off as Dublin get their Walsh Cup campaign off to a winning start

Dublin 2-17
Carlow 1-13

Paul Keane reports from Parnell Park

DUBLIN CAPTAIN LIAM Rushe saw red at Parnell Park where Dublin finished strong to begin their Bord na Mona Walsh Cup campaign with victory.

Ger Cunningham’s new look panel were just three ahead of a dogged Carlow side when Rushe and Carlow’s Jack Kavanagh were shown straight red cards in the 61st minute.

But Dublin upped the ante from there on and sub Alex Quinn contributed 1-1 late on to put the result beyond doubt.

Quinn also hit 1-4 last weekend for the Dubs Stars in the annual challenge and looks certain to push hard for a spot in Cunningham’s panel following a pre-season overhaul.

The Dubs were without 23 players for the Walsh opener for various reasons and Rushe was one of just three players retained in the lineup from last year’s qualifier defeat to Cork.

The rookie outfit found the going difficult and despite running 0-5 to 0-1 clear early on actually fell behind after a Chris Nolan Carlow goal.

Cian O’Sullivan responded with a fine solo goal for Dublin who led 1-10 to 1-6 at the break.

Free-taker Denis Murphy scored nine points in total for Carlow who remained right in there for long spells in the second-half. But Murphy left the field with an arm injury late on and Dublin finished with that burst to begin 2017 with a win.

All-Ireland club winner Karol Mannion calls time on his football career

FORMER ROSCOMMON FOOTBALLER Karol Mannion has announced his retirement from football.

Mannion, who retired from the inter-county game in 2014, concludes his career as one of St Brigid’s most influential players in a career that spans across two decades.

2013 was undoubtedly the crowning moment of his career, when he put in a man-of-the-match performance as part of St Brigid’s stunning comeback in the All-Ireland club final against Ballymun Kickhams.

In addition to the All-Ireland honours, Mannion concludes his career with 4 Connacht SFC titles and 9 county SFC titles with St Brigid’s along with a Connacht SFC title with Roscommon in 2010.

Paying tribute to Mannion and fellow team-mate Robbie Kelly – who is retiring from senior football – St Brigid’s posted the following message on their Facebook page.

Donal Keogan, Donnacha Tobin, Mickey Burke, Cian O’Brien, Cillian O’Sullivan, Graham Reilly and Bryan McMahon are all survivors from that game, which transpired to be former manager Mick O’Dowd’s last in charge.

McEntee’s son Shane will start at centre-back after featuring as a substitute during O’Dowd’s time at the helm last year.

Odhrán MacNiallais to take a year out for ‘personal reasons’

DONEGAL FOOTBALLER ODHRÁN MacNiallais has revealed he is stepping away from the inter-county scene in 2017.

The 24-year-old confirmed his intentions to take a break “for personal reasons” in The Donegal Democrat.

The versatile Gaoth Dobhair club man has ended speculation by taking the decision, but added that he was unsure what the immediate future held.

“I’m taking a year out, but not sure about the American part,” he told the paper.

There was no fall out or anything with management or players. It is just for personal reasons.”

However, MacNiallais said he was unsure whether or not he would spend time in the US this year.

MacNiallais was first drafted into the squad by Jim McGuinness in 2011, making his debut in the 2012 Dr McKenna Cup.

After missing the rest of that season with injury, he returned in 2013 and was part of the 2014 Ulster Championship winning squad.

The news of his departure comes just two weeks after Leo McLoone informed the Donegal management team he would not be available for selection in 2017.

The Tír Chonaill kick off this season’s Allianz National Football League campaign against Kerry on 5 February.

GAA retirements, Munster return to Paris and a Minister’s plans for MMA – It’s Comments of The Week

MUNSTER WILL MAKE the journey back to Paris this weekend to fulfill the Champions Cup fixture against Racing 92 that was postponed last year following Anthony Foley’s sudden death. Elsewhere, there was a huge reaction to the revelation that Irish sailor Saskia Tidey is transferring to Team Great Britain.

Minister for Sport Shane Ross sparked a debate following statements he made about how he plans to regulate MMA in Ireland. The GAA lost some big names this week, while others are becoming an emerging force in their respective counties.

Here’s what you had to say about it all.

Anthony Connery had this to say following Minister Shane’s Ross address about tackling MMA regulation in Ireland.

Kerry footballing legend Mick O’Connell turned 80 years of age this week. Martello Mulligan wrote this about O’Connell’s modest character.

Munster are returning to Paris this weekend for the rescheduled Champions Cup fixture which had to be cancelled following the sudden death of Munster coach Anthony Foley. Collitov had this to say about the upcoming game against Racing 92.

Niall Kelly goal helps strong Kildare side to O’Byrne Cup win over Longford

Kildare 1-15
Longford 0-12

KILDARE GOT THEIR 2017 campaign up and running with a confident six point victory over Longford in the first round of the O’Byrne Cup.

Niall Kelly’s 29th minute goal gave the Lilywhites a 1-7 to 0-7 interval lead, and with Fionn Dowling and Neil Flynn among the scorers they never looked like surrendering that advantage in the second half.

Cian O’Neill named a strong starting XV for the tie at St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge, with the likes of Peter Kelly, Fergal Conway, Keith Cribbin and Niall Kelly included.

Longford too had plenty of experienced players in action, as Barry McKeon, Robbie Smyth, Sean McCormack and Mark Hughes were among the big names to start.

Longford started brightly and were three points to the good (0-6 to 0-3) after the opening 20 minutes of action with McCormack and Smyth on target.

But Kildare rallied before the interval and posted 1-4 in the last 10 minutes of the opening half to turn the game on its head. Kelly’s goal, aided by three Fionn Dowling scores, handed O’Neill’s men control at the break.

The home side kicked the first three points of the second period to move seven points clear, as Ben McCormack, Dowling and Flynn raised the white flags.

From that point it was plain sailing for Kildare, despite the best efforts of Longford duo McCormack and Smyth who finished with 0-10 between them.
