Disappointment for DJ Carey’s Kilkenny minor footballers after 38-point defeat

THERE WAS DISAPPOINTMENT for DJ Carey’s Kilkenny footballers on Tuesday, as they suffered a 38-point defeat to Wicklow in the Electric Ireland Leinster MFC.

The Cats got off to an encouraging start in this competition, playing out a 3-16 to 3-8 defeat to Louth in their opening game last month.

But their second-round outing in Nowlan Park proved to be a much more difficult assignment as Wicklow came away with a 9-20 to 2-3 victory.

Carey’s charges were trailing by 19 points at half-time with Eoin Doyle hitting a brace of goals for Wicklow while Matthew Ging and Shane Daly also hit the back of the net for the visitors before the break.

Doyle finished the game with an impressive tally of 3-3.

Kilkenny fought to stay in contention and Vincent O’Grady grabbed a goal back for them in the first half from the penalty spot. But they were left with a mountain to climb heading into the second period.

Evan O’Shea scored the other goal for Kilkenny, while Eoin Conway and Ryan Murphy also added to their scoresheet with points.

Tipperary’s O’Riordan recalled by Sydney Swans while Hanley and Tuohy return to starting sides in AFL

TIPPERARY’S COLIN O’RIORDAN will return to AFL action this weekend after being recalled by the Sydney Swans for what will be only his second appearance of the 2019 season.

O’Riordan will feature in Friday night’s game against Essendon in Round 8 after being named on the interchange list, returning to the side as a replacement for injured team-mate Harry Cunningham.

A Round 2 outing against Adelaide Crows is 2011 All-Ireland minor football winner O’Riordan’s only appearance so far in this campaign for Sydney Swans. He had featured in the NEAFL recently and has been rewarded by a spot in the AFL side.

“Colin’s form has been absolutely fantastic in our reserves so he really deserves a game,” Sydney Swans coach John Longmire told their club website.

“He played a fair bit of senior footy over the pre-season so it is good to have him back in the team.”

It will mark the fifth AFL appearance in his career for the 23-year-old who made his debut last July in a game against North Melbourne.

O’Riordan initially joined the Sydney Swans in October 2015 as an international rookie before further committing his future to the club in November 2017 when he signed a new two-year contract extension.

Tyrone’s Conor McKenna will be going up against O’Riordan as part of the Essendon side.

Kerry’s Mark O’Connor will maintain his record of featuring in all eight of Geelong’s games to date this season.

Elsewhere Kilkenny’s Darragh Joyce drops out of the St Kilda side for their encounter with West Coast Eagles on Saturday while Derry’s Conor Glass is back in the frame for Hawthorn on Sunday against GWS Giants.

‘I wasn’t fit to lift a pen… I take four tablets in the morning and six in the evening now’

TWELVE DAYS LATER, the doctors finally diagnosed ulcerative colitis.

Roisin Gleeson had gone from training four nights a week with Fermanagh and St Patrick’s Donagh, to not being able to drive or even lift a pen.

But five years on from a worrying health scare, she takes ten tablets every day to keep the symptoms at bay.

“I was feeling very unwell,” said Gleeson. “It had the same effect that food poisoning would have. The doctors didn’t really know what was wrong with me.

“They took loads of blood tests and eventually that showed up, and then they medicated it to keep it under control.

“I was playing club and county and training nearly every night during the week.

“I went from that to not being fit to literally lift a pen, it’s energy zapping and that is what it does to you.

“I couldn’t drive, I had no energy and it was a big shock to the system.”

Gleeson, who lives in the small town of Donagh, just outside Lisnaskea, would spend over three months on the sidelines recovering.

Having made her Fermanagh debut in 2009, she had thoughts of potentially never being able to pull on the goalkeeper’s jersey again.

“I didn’t Google the symptoms. I left that to the specialists, it was hard enough for them to figure it out,” she added.

“It is a lifelong thing. You just take the medication and it is doing its job. Just keep on top of it and it will be grand.

“At the start, I had to alter my diet. Some things would have triggered it so I had to keep a close eye on what was causing problems. Then, once you were out of the woods, you were grand.

“I take four tablets in the morning and six in the evening now. I am used to it and I have squeezed it into my routine.”

The 31-year-old is back in the thick of club and county action, and she combines that with her day job as a factory supervisor.

It can be tough making training when work only ends at 6pm and you start out on the opposite side of the county.

But coming back from illness and putting in the hard yards away from the pitch makes last Saturday’s Lidl NFL Division 4 title win all the more worthwhile.

Fermanagh beat Ulster rivals Antrim 2-8 to 1-10 at St Tiernach’s Park in Clones.

“We won the All-Ireland a few years ago and last weekend was the only thing I had dodged for my ten years playing with Fermanagh,” said Gleeson.

“Whenever you have big wins like that, you think that there is not going to be many years left now so you have to enjoy them.”

Fermanagh and Antrim will renew rivalries in the TG4 Ulster Championship next month, with the counties scheduled to meet in a provincial semi-final on June 8.

And Gleeson cannot wait for summer football and a chance for more national silverware.

“We had a week off and now it’s a few weeks of hard work before we face Antrim again,” said Gleeson.

“We were saying after the League semi-final that we had left it very late and if we were knocked out that day, we would have had a long wait until the championship.

“We shortened the gap between the League and the championship and that is great for us because there is plenty of competition in Fermanagh for places at the minute.

“Winning the League gives the girls an extra boost now going into the Championship.”

Tipperary dual star signs for Brisbane Lions as Irish invasion of AFLW continues

TIPPERARY DUAL STAR Orla O’Dwyer is set to try her hand at a new code in the coming months after signing for AFLW side Brisbane Lions.

The Premier camogie captain — who won an All-Ireland intermediate title with the footballers in 2017 — has penned a rookie deal ahead of the league’s fourth season, joining a strong Irish contingent Down Under.

“AFLW is something completely new for me and I’m looking forward to the challenge that’s involved with learning a new sport and living in a completely different country,” says O’Dwyer, who applied to global platform CrossCoders.

“I think it’s great for women’s sport to have this opportunity and I’ve decided to choose AFLW while I’m still very young and because it’s such a great experience.”

The Tipp native’s new coach Craig Starcevich says he was impressed by O’Dwyer’s ‘speed, power and aggression’.

“She’s a tremendous athlete who’s got great power and speed but is tough too,” he says. “Watching the way she attacks a game both in camogie and football – well, there was a lot to like about the way she goes about it.”

20-year-old O’Dwyer has been at the centre of several dual debates and clashes through the years, but carries on doing her best to give 100% to both — and excel at that.

Last July, she played two inter-county games in four hours, while in August she had two in two days at opposite ends of the country. But she continued both because she loves them.

“I love the two of them so much,” as she told The42 last January. “I love being able to play the two of them.

“I think they both benefit each other. As in football, you have to be so fit for it. When I train with the football, I feel like I’m really fit for the camogie. Then, camogie makes me really strong which is good for the football as well.

“I wouldn’t be able to pick. I love the two of them, so I’m happy out.”

Now, the University of Limerick student will embark on a new challenge when the championship season ends over her — becoming the eighth Irish player confirmed for the 2020 AFLW season so far.

Mayo’s Kelly sisters — Niamh and Grace — pen to paper and signed rookie deals at the newly-formed West Coast Eagles last week, while Sarah Rowe (Collingwood), Cora Staunton and Yvonne Bonner (GWS Giants), Ailish Conisidine (Adelaide Crows) and O’Dwyer’s Tipperary team-mate Aisling McCarthy (Western Bulldogs) have all re-signed after their outstanding contributions last season.

O’Riordan off the mark in AFL as former Tipp and Tyrone underage stars exchange big goals

TIPPERARY’S COLIN O’RIORDAN kicked his first AFL goal as the Sydney Swans edged Essendon 77-72 at the SCG.

A 2011 minor football All-Ireland winner with The Premier, O’Riordan has been in superb form for Sydney’s reserves and was rewarded with what was only his second first-team appearance of the season when team-mate Harry Cunningham was ruled out of the Round 8 clash through injury.

Defender O’Riordan conceded a double 50-metre penalty during his only other senior outing this season, that coming in Round 2, but he was today the benefactor of the same call.

The 23-year-old capitalised fully, firing home from range to get off the mark in Aussie Rules.

Lining out against O’Riordan for Essendon was Tyrone man Conor McKenna, who moved Down Under after he caught the eye as a Red Hand minor footballer in 2014.

McKenna, also 23, kicked a monster goal in the Bombers’ losing effort.
