Robert Mueller to testify publicly to Congress over Russian probe

Robert Mueller, the former special counsel, will testify before Congress about his investigation into Russia’s election interference and obstruction of justice by Donald Trump.

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerrold Nadler and the head of House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff said Mr Mueller agreed to testify on July 17 pursuant to a subpoena.

His back-to-back appearances in public before the two House panels on Capitol Hill are almost certain to be among the most closely-watched spectacles of the Trump presidency.

The ramifications of his testimony are potentially far-reaching, and could ultimately have the power to convince members of Congress to support an impeachment inquiry against Mr Trump.

For that reason, Mr Mueller, who largely rose above the political fray by speaking only once during his near two-year investigation, had been loathe to discuss his work on the witness stand.

At a surprise news conference last month Mr Mueller suggested it was ultimately for Congress to accuse a president of wrongdoing. His written report, he said, should speak for itself.

But his public testimony has long been considered crucial by Democrats to inform the wider public of his findings, and the two chairmen on Tuesday served him with their subpoenas.

The chairmen wrote in a letter to Mr Mueller they were aware of his reservations about testifying in public, but would compel him to appear before their committees nonetheless.

"The American public deserves to hear directly from you about your investigation and conclusions," they wrote. "We expect that you will appear before our Committees as scheduled."

The White House declined to comment, but Mr Trump reverted to his traditional course of attack on Tuesday night, tweeting the subpoenas amounted to "Presidential Harassment!"

Mr Trump and his Attorney General William Barr insisted they had no objection to Mr Mueller testifying, but they could block him from doing so as they have other government officials.

The stakes could scarcely be higher for Mr Trump, who faces re-election in 2020, and will have to grapple with the issue that Mr Mueller’s appearances will be aired live on TV in its entirety.

But it is not immediately clear how much Mr Mueller might be willing to say, should he seek to protect his reputation as an independent arbitrator not influenced by political persuasions.

The Democrats are interested in whether Mr Mueller believed Mr Trump obstructed justice but did not pursue a charge because of Justice Department rules against indicting a sitting president.

But Mr Mueller has been among the most vexing of figures in Washington as he conducted his work in total secrecy, and it remains a possibility he continues that approach on the witness stand.

His report in the end concluded there was no conspiracy between Mr Trump’s campaign and Russia to influence the results of the 2016 election but did not clear the president of obstruction.

Mr Mueller decided not to pursue an obstruction charge against Mr Trump in part because of Justice Department guidelines that prevent an indictment of a sitting president.

That admission, however, caused House Democrats to seize on Mr Mueller’s comments as a de facto referral to start their own oversight investigations into possible presidential wrongdoing.

VIDEO: Cops Leap For Cover From Dive-Bombing Mama Blue Jay

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY – An attack from above left a pair of NYPD officers ducking for cover on the Upper East Side – though their assailant was no more menacing than a protective bird.

The cops were called to help a Blue Jay chick found on the sidewalk somewhere in the NYPD’s 19th precinct, which covers the neighborhood. But as they approached, the baby’s mom swooped from above, according to the precinct’s Twitter feed.

Though the Twitter feed identified the bird as a Bluebird in the Aug. 23 post, it was later confirmed to be a Blue Jay.

The tweet won plaudits for the officers and the NYPD, including from the Twitter account of the Manhattan Bird Alert, which keeps nearly 20,000 birders informed about ornithological sightings in the city.

Tenaja Fire: 2 'Fire Whirls' Caught On Camera Near Murrieta

MURRIETA, CA — As fire crews battling the Tenaja Fire in the community of La Cresta continue to douse the flames in the rolling hills of Southern California, they are constantly also fighting flare-ups. Occasionally, they see another sight: a fire tornado, also known as a fire whirl.

Meteorologists used the term “fire whirl” for what is commonly described as a fire tornado. Fire tornadoes are not unusual, a National Weather Service meteorologist said last year when one tore through the Redding area.

“(Fire tornadoes) are similar to dust devils, where the ground gets so hot it has to escape somehow,” said Mike Kochasic of the weather service. “The fires created such a hot surface temperature in the ground that the air had to go upward. It created its own weather system.”

Backstage News on Roman Reigns’ Return & Notes on RAW Segments

According to a report by Fightful, Roman Reigns informed WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon that he was cancer free early last week and it was Roman himself who pitched the idea and made the decision to come back on RAW to announce his return. Up until last Monday morning, the only people who were aware of the details of Reigns’ announcement were Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, Triple H, Kevin Dunn & Executive Michelle Wilson.
A separate report notes that after Roman revealed that his cancer was in remission, Seth Rollins joined him at the end of the segment but Dean Ambrose made the decision himself to not accompany his fellow Shield members on stage. Ambrose was reportedly very emotional backstage and so it was quickly decided that instead Reigns & Rollins would save Ambrose after his match later on in the show.
