Sackler Trust suspends all new donations following opioid scandal

A trust that has donated millions to medical science, healthcare, education and the arts in the UK has announced it is suspending all new giving as it faces legal cases amid the opioid drug crisis in the US.

The Sackler Trust is run by the Sackler family, members of which own Purdue Pharma, a company selling the prescription painkiller OxyContin.

The business is facing hundreds of lawsuits in the US aiming to hold it to account for its alleged role in the country’s opioid drug crisis.

Earlier this month, a £1 million donation to the National Portrait Gallery was cancelled, and the trust has now said all philanthropic giving will temporarily cease so the issue "will not be a distraction for institutions that are applying for grants".

Commitments that have already been made will be honoured.

Sackler Trust chairwoman Dame Theresa Sackler said in a statement issued on behalf of the trustees: "I am deeply saddened by the addiction crisis in America and support the actions Purdue Pharma is taking to help tackle the situation, whilst still rejecting the false allegations made against the company and several members of the Sackler family.

"The current press attention that these legal cases in the United States is generating has created immense pressure on the scientific, medical, educational and arts institutions here in the UK, large and small, that I am so proud to support.

"This attention is distracting them from the important work that they do.

"The trustees of the Sackler Trust have taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause all new philanthropic giving, while still honouring existing commitments.

"I remain fully committed to all the causes the Sackler Trust supports, but at this moment it is the better course for the Trust to halt all new giving until we can be confident that it will not be a distraction for institutions that are applying for grants."

In numbers | US opioid crisis

Since 2010, the Sackler Trust claims to have donated more than £60 million in support of medical science, healthcare, education and the arts in the UK.

OxyContin is a time-released opioid that was introduced in 1996.

Lawsuits against Purdue Pharma allege that the company, based in Stamford, Connecticut, sold OxyContin as a drug with a low chance of triggering addictions, despite knowing this to be not true.

According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2017 opioids were involved in nearly 48,000 deaths.

Purdue, which denies wrongdoing, has said that its products were approved by federal regulators and prescribed by doctors.

Indonesian amusement park covers up mermaid statues with boob tubes to respect ‘Eastern values’

A pair of bare-breasted mermaid statues have been given the family values treatment at an Indonesian amusement park where officials slipped golden boob tubes over their chests.

While the nude statues have been on display for years at Jakarta’s Ancol Dreamland, a recent policy aimed at respecting "Eastern values" has seen the mermaids get an official cover-up.

The statues were initially just covered with gold fabric, but they’ve now also been moved to a more secluded area after visitors kept pulling the coverings down, park sources told AFP.

Ancol Dreamland spokeswoman Rika Lestari insisted no outside agitators were behind the cover-up.

"There was no pressure from any group," she said. "Ancol is trying to become an amusement park and vacation spot for families."

That didn’t stop the park’s move from being widely mocked.

"Thanks Ancol. Now, no one will commit adultery of the eyes from looking at the mermaids’ breasts," comedian Soleh Solihun wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, Ms Lestari told the Indonesian newspaper Kompas: "We’re Eastern people, we have Eastern culture, so what was inappropriate we made it more appropriate.

"It’s just a matter of perception, because what we’ve done was the best for us. It’s a good thing, so why not."

Indonesia is the world’s biggest Muslim majority country and relatively conservative social values are prevalent.

Japan’s Emperor Akihito abdicates in historic ceremony

Japan’s Emperor Akihito today abdicated after 30 years at the helm of the Chrysanthemum Throne, paving the way for his son to take over and heralding a new era.

On a historic day for Japan, Emperor Akihito, 85, completed the nation’s first abdication in more than 200 years during a brief ceremony in a state room of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

During the ten-minute ceremony at 5pm local time, Emperor Akihito addressed the nation for the last time in the Heisei era, a period spanning three peaceful decades that ends at midnight tonight.

A new era called Reiwa – meaning “beautiful harmony” will then commence and his son Crown Prince Naruhito will assume step into his position, with an ascension ceremony tomorrow morning.

The emperor, dressed in formal black tailcoat and a grey tie, was accompanied by his wife Empress Michiko in a long white silk dress and white gloves, as he made his way into the Matsu no Ma “Pine Hall” for the abdication ceremony.

In his final speech as emperor, while flanked by hinoki cypress wood stands carrying the Imperial Regalia and Privy and State Seals, he said: “Since ascending the throne 30 years ago, I have performed my duties as the emperor with a deep sense of trust in and respect for the people, and I consider myself most fortunate to have been able to do so.

Japan's Imperial family

“I sincerely thank the people who accepted and supported me in my role as the symbol of the state. I sincerely wish, together with the empress, that the Reiwa Era, which begins tomorrow, will be a stable and fruitful one, and I pray, with all my heart, for peace and happiness for all the people in Japan and around the world.”

The abdication ceremony was attended by nearly 300 guests, including senior members of the Imperial family, heads of both chambers of parliament, chief justices of the supreme court and local government leaders.

As brief as it was historic, it was the culmination of years of planning, with the emperor last month commencing a string of more complex Shinto prayers, rituals and offerings for his abdication at key sites across the country.

Today’s final abdication proceedings began shortly after 10am, when the emperor, dressed in traditional dark orange robes and a black headdress, walked slowly into an Imperial Palace sanctuary to inform Amaterasu, the mythical sun goddess and ancestress of all emperors, of his plans to abdicate.

He went on to perform ceremonies at two other key shrines in the Imperial Palace, followed by his son and heir Crown Prince Naruhito, who also worshipped at the three sanctuaries, ahead of his accession.

His distinct traditional attire, including an unusually tall headdress, is known as Korozen no Goho, an imperial outfit that dates back to the 9th century and is worn only by the emperor when performing important rituals.

Despite drizzly weather on and off throughout the day, crowds of Japanese and foreign tourists gathered near the Imperial Palace in central Tokyo, where several thousand police personnel had reportedly been deployed amid heightened security.

Among them was Kimiyo Miyagawa, 68, a housewife from northern Japan who had travelled to the palace with her daughter to pay tribute to the outgoing emperor.

“I wanted to come to the Imperial Palace as they (emperor and empress) are like the father and mother of the country,” she said.

“I would like to tell them ‘Thank you so much for your hard work’. I’m full of gratitude.”

At midnight on Tuesday, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will cease their roles, making way for Crown Prince Naruhito and his wife Crown Princess Mashiko to take their place at the helm, as the new Reiwa era commences.

On Wednesday morning, a special accession ceremony known as Kenji-to-Shokei-no-gi will take place, enabling the incoming emperor to inherit the Imperial Regalia – a sacred trinity consisting of a sword, a mirror and a gem – to confirm his sovereignty.

The festivities will not end here, however, with the new emperor’s Enthronement Ceremony due to take place in October, attended by dignitaries from nearly 200 countries.

It was in 2016 that Emperor Akihito, who previously underwent treatment for prostate cancer and heart surgery, expressed his wish to abdicate in a televised message in which he cited concerns about fulfilling his duties due to his advancing age.

He was the first emperor to be enthroned under the nation’s pacifist post-war constitution and took painstaking steps to carve out his official role as “symbol of the state”.

During Emperor Akihito’s tenure, he emerged as a symbol of reconciliation, repeatedly seeking to make amends for the Second World War as he travelled overseas as a neutral figurehead of Japan on dozens of visits.

Styrian GP at risk of qualifying wash out on Saturday

F1 teams have been warned that adverse weather could severely impact running at the Styrian Grand Prix on Saturday, with qualifying at risk of being washed out.

The current weather forecast is calling for heavy rain to fall around Spielberg, forcing organisers and F1 to consider contingency plans.

A document circulated among the teams by FIA race director Michael Masi stipulated that is qualifying is scrapped tomorrow, the session could be delayed to Sunday morning.

Norris hit with three-place grid penalty for yellow flag infraction!

But if running is hampered again on Sunday morning, Friday’s second practice session would serve as the basis of the Styrian Grand Prix’s grid.

That prospect will likely incite teams to manage their run plans in FP2 accordingly as McLaren F1 boss Andreas Seidl explained.

“We gathered information from the race director already, giving a kind of pre-warning that there is a risk that no session is happening tomorrow because of thunderstorms or heavy rain,” Seidl said, quoted by Motorsport.com

“And it is still open, if that would happen, if there’s a qualifying on Sunday morning or worst case, if that’s not possible because the weather could still be bad, then FP2 would count as a qualifying result.

“That’s something we need to monitor today and we need to figure out how we want to handle that.”

David’s Tea To Close 82 Stores In Canada As It Abandons U.S. Market

MONTREAL — Insolvent beverage retailer David’s Tea is closing 82 stores in Canada and all 42 of its stores in the U.S. as it focuses on its e-commerce business and supplying grocery stores and pharmacies.

The Montreal-based company announced Thursday that it is sending notices to terminate the leases at the 124 stores to take effect in 30 days. The move would affect about half of its workforce of nearly 2,500, including all 366 employees in the United States.

It will also seek more favourable lease terms for the remaining 100 stores in Canada and may permanently shut additional locations if landlords are unwilling to negotiate suitable leases.

It had warned in mid-June that it could begin a formal restructuring depending on the outcome of its talks with landlords.

The company said at the time that it hadn’t paid rent on any of its stores for April, May and June.

The store closures are part of its restructuring plan after it obtained court protection from creditors under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and Chapter 15 in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

“With the upcoming closure of 124 unprofitable stores across North America, we are certainly making good progress in creating a stronger business model for the future and ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of DavidsTea and our beloved brand,” company founder and interim CEO Herschel Segal said in a news release.

Chief financial officer Frank Zitella said that with the closure of “a significant number of money-losing stores” it will focus exclusively on e-commerce sale which had a penetration rate of close to 43 per cent in the market before COVID-19.

“All 100 remaining DavidsTea stores have been closed since March 17 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will remain so until further notice,” he stated.

David’s Tea last month reported that it lost $23.2 million last year on $146.5 million in revenues. That includes a US$4.3 million loss in its fiscal fourth quarter on US$54.8 million of revenues.

The move by David’s Tea comes three years after Starbucks announced the closure of all of its Teavana brand stores. The coffee giant acquired Teavana Holdings in 2012 for US$620 million.

David's Tea Plans To Close Stores As It Files For Bankruptcy Protection

MONTREAL — DavidsTea is seeking court protection from creditors so it can continue operating while it restrutures and plans to close a significant number of its stores.

The Montreal-based company said Wednesday it will seek an order in Quebec Superior Court to allow it to restructure under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act.

It also plans to seek similar orders for its U.S. subsidiary under Chapter 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

The company said during the restructuring process it plans to continue operating online through its website and its wholesale distribution channel, which supplies grocery stores and pharmacies.

The chain’s stores have been shut since March 17 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The transformation of our business model is necessary to position the company for a return to profitability,” chief financial officer Frank Zitella said in a statement.

“DavidsTea has experienced a multi-year decline in brick and mortar sales and the post COVID-19 retail environment creates significant challenges for our unique in-store customer experience.”

It had warned in mid-June that it hadn’t paid rent on any of its stores for April, May and June and that it may seek a formal restructuring.

Zitella said Wednesday it would seek more favourable lease conditions from landlords and ultimately may terminate “a significant number” of its 222 leases.

DavidsTea’s founder and interim chief executive, Herschel Segal, said he regretted the impact that the restructuring will have on its employees.

“This has been an incredibly difficult decision to take, but a necessary one to ensure the long-term viability of our company,” Segal said.
