F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: Recapping WWE Super Show-Down
Going into Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday, it wasn’t entirely clear whether it would be more of a major stadium show or a glorified live event. There were elements of both on display at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Without even factoring in entrances or the post-match angle, Triple H vs. The Undertaker was nearly 30 minutes long. It was obvious that they were attempting to deliver on the epic “last-time ever” main event that had been promised.
WON NEWSLETTER: October 8, 2018 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Massive UFC 229 expectations, plus tons of news
Headed up with a major history piece on the 30-year history of Ted Turner’s involvement with pro wrestling and coverage of a week of so many major events, it’s a double issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter this week.
Preview UFC 229 and why it is expected to be the biggest non-boxing PPV in history. Look at projections, some real numbers, some comparisons, and why Dana White says it wasn’t in Madison Square Garden.
The big story looks at Ted Turner and how he first got connected to pro wrestling in 1972, the role of Ray & Ann Gunkel, the wrestling war in Georgia that led to the two hour Saturday night block, the roles of Jim Barnett and Ole Anderson, and the first-ever Omni sellout.
Also look at the decision made by UFC and USADA to no longer announce drug test failures and why it wasn’t well thought out, as well as the reputation of USADA taking such a hit and the sad ironies of this.
Look at WWE Super Show-Down, ticket sales and ramifications.
Read the update on the 1,000th episode of Smackdown, WWE plans for NXT and ideas that have been talked about, major execs selling WWE stock.
Look at the big questions facing Bellator as they try and build their brand, as well as surprising notes of the Bellator brand vs U.S. pro wrestling companies and Saturday’s show in particular.
This issue has full coverage of ROH’s Death Before Dishonor with match-by-match coverage, business notes, polls and star ratings for the show.

The Undertaker beat Shane McMahon in a 30-minute Hell in a Cell match to maintain his WrestleMania career.
It also means Shane does not get control of Raw and must submit the lockbox contents hanging over Vince McMahon’s head. (Presumably, since the lockbox has not been mentioned since Shane’s Week 1 return.)
Taker won the match after Shane went for a dive off the top of the Cell through a table, but Taker moved. WWE sold Shane’s big dive through to the post-match. Shane eventually took a Tombstone in the ring, Taker pinned him, and Shane was carted to the back to close the match segment.
There was no outside interference during the match.

Ahead of SmackDown 1000, WWE’s YouTube channel has released a documentary on Eddie Guerrero.
The “WWE Untold” episode on Guerrero’s contributions to SmackDown premiered on WWE’s YouTube channel at 1 p.m. Eastern time today. It examines how “Guerrero emerged as a leader on SmackDown in the early days of the 2002 brand split, both on-screen as a performer and behind the scenes as a locker room leader for a group of young Superstars out to prove themselves on a show that found itself competing with Monday Night Raw.”

Interviews with Vickie Guerrero, Aiden English (who is married to Guerrero’s daughter Shaul), John Cena, Batista, Kurt Angle, JBL, Paul Heyman, and Sasha Banks are included in the episode.
WWE also released an episode of Untold prior to last month’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. It focused on Mick Foley’s Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker at King of the Ring 1998.
The 17-minute episode on Guerrero available to watch below:
What was supposed to cap off Raw on a high note ended instead in confusion as Dean Ambrose ambused Seth Rollins right after they won the Raw tag team titles.
The Shield had announced before the match that they were dedicating the match to Roman Reigns, who announced earlier in the show that he would be taking a leave of absence to battle leukemia. After Braun Strowman chased Drew McIntyre out of the arena, Rollins picked up the win for his team after hitting the curb stomp on Ziggler.
Rollins and Ambrose were celebrating their title win when suddenly Ambrose laid out Rollins with the dirty deeds DDT. Ambrose continued to beat on Rollins, sending him out of the ring. After throwing the tag titles at Rollins, he then uncovered the mats outside the ring, revealing concrete. Ambrose gave Rollins another dirty deeds on the exposed concrete as he exited through the crowd to close out the show.
Ziggler and McIntyre held the titles for 49 days, winning them back on the September 3 edition of Raw

WWE star Ryback expressed disappointment with his place on the WrestleMania card in a recent sit-down interview on the Middle East tour. A subdued Ryback also revealed frustration with his position in WWE to the point where he’s considering other options going forward.
Asked by Dubai radio host Myles if he was pleased with his WrestleMania pre-show match against U.S. champion Kalisto, Ryback replied, “To be quite honest, absolutely not.”
“The last three WrestleManias have not been great. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail on that, but it would have been nice to be on the show where both of us belongs. The U.S. Title definitely belongs on there. Hopefully next year – if there is a next year – there will be a better experience.”
Ryback went into more details on his frustration not being presented at the main event level, believing he is a unique act capable of more than he’s been given lately.
“I go out there each and every day to prove my worth that I am a once-in-a-lifetime WWE Superstar. I am The Big Guy, I am the best big guy in the world, and there is nobody like me. I will continue to plug away and be the best version of me. Hopefully at the end of the night, I’m where I belong,” Ryback said.
Asked about striving for main event status, Ryback replied, “I’ve heard in this business that hard work doesn’t always pay off. Maybe the Big Guy has to go find another world where that does pay off.
“You work really, really hard at something and dedicate yourself, then sometimes have to be be told you’re somewhere else. That’s a tough pill to swallow time and time again. I’ve never stopped believing in myself and I never will. Next year should undoubtedly be a big year for The Big Guy.”
