Waconia, Canby, and Willmar are top MWCA Academic Teams

Class AA Waconia is the top MWCA State Academic Team, Canby leads Class A, and Willmar is champs in Class AAA

Class AA Academic Champion Waconia had an impressive 3.849 team grade point average to lead all teams that applied for the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches’ Association Team Academic Award in 2017. Class A Champion Canby had a 3.816 GPA and Class AAA Champion Willmar turned in a 3.795 GPA. Congratulations to all three teams.

Each year the MWCA recognizes teams that have a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. Teams take the top 10 grade point averages from their 19-man section team roster to submit on their application for the award. Teams that have a 3.0-3.49 team GPA receive a silver plaque, while teams with a 3.50-4.00 g.p.a. earn a gold plaque. This year 50 teams received the silver plaque and another 55 earned the gold plaque.

Simley trio completes back-to-back feat

Simley completed a rare trifecta in the Class 2A state individual wrestling finals Saturday night.

Yes, three Spartans – junior Jake Gliva and sophomores Anthony Jackson and Daniel Kerkvliet – won state titles – Gliva at 126 pounds, Jackson at 152 and Kerkvliet at 195. More impressively, it was each wrestler’s second straight state title. And all will have the chance to come back and three-peat next spring.

“It’s great,” Kerkvliet said. “I think it’s fun, because I’m not the only one on this journey. I have two great teammates along with me.”

Booker Credits Benoit For Putting Him On The Map, Done Wrestling

As seen in the video below, WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T was recently a guest on Busted Open Radio. During the interview, Booker, who recently returned to the ring for his Reality Of Wrestling Promotion, stated that he is not wrestling any more matches going forward. The Former WWE World Champion said that he wants to focus on the students at his school going forward, as seen below:
“[My students] are gonna carry from here on end because I won’t be doing any more wrestling matches, because it hurts,” Booker said with a chuckle. “I’m looking forward to let my guys go out there and perform at the very highest level.”
In early years of The Annual WWE Tribute To The Troops Event, WWE Talent would actually travel to Iraq & Afghanistan to perform for the troops, also visiting military camps, bases and hospitals along the way. Booker determined that these moments of giving back to the troops were the proudest of his career, as seen below:

“[My proudest career moment was] going to Iraq, performing for the troops in 40 degree weather, in my underwear, feeling like it’s 70 degrees, feeling so proud to be over there representing the country,” Booker explained. “And giving our soldiers a little bit of a break. I’ve still got that photo on my wall.”
Booker also remembered his matches with Chris Benoit in WCW as his definite favorites. Booker admitted that “it’s a touch subject” because Benoit murdered his wife and son in June of 2007 before hanging himself two days later, however he believes that Benoit pushed him like nobody else could. Booker added that Benoit was in part responsible for getting him over, as seen below:
“The best of seven with Benoit is vividly in my brains, seared in my brain,” Booker said. “Man, I can’t help but be comfortable with it. It was the best I ever did, the best a lot of people have ever seen. The best of seven was epic in so many different ways because he put me on the map as a wrestler. He made me do things I thought I never could do. Definitely going to always be a touchy situation just because of the way he left this Earth, but the matches – they were classics. They were the best. If I go watch a match, those are the matches I watch.”

College Recruiting: state runner-up Long to Concordia

Keaton Long of West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville has committed to wrestling for Concordia next season.

Long is a three-time state entrant. He was the Class A 152-pound runner-up this season. Long helped West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville to a state team third place finish in 2017 and a sixth place finish in 2016.

Long is projected to wrestle at 157 pounds for the Cobbers.

CERB Recipients Face A ‘Shock’ At Tax Time. Here’s How To Prepare

If you’re one of the millions of Canadians who have received payments from the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) in recent months, get ready for an unpleasant reality next spring: There’s a good chance you will owe money to the Canada Revenue Agency.

Payments from CERB are fully taxable, and ― unlike with a typical paycheque from an employer ― the taxes owed aren’t taken off the amount the government sends you.

For many CERB recipients, “it will be a shock when they find out what they owe next year,” debt relief expert Doug Hoyes of Hoyes, Michalos & Associates told HuffPost Canada in an email.

“Even worse, many people get a tax refund, so if you normally count on a $1,000 refund, next year not only will you not get the refund but you may end up owing $1,400, or whatever.”

For recently unemployed people, a tax hit could be particularly hard to bear, and with millions of Canadians having received CERB this year, that could prove quite a hit to Canadian consumers as a whole.

For that reason, it’s possible ― some say likely ― the government will tweak the program somehow to ease that tax burden.

But for now, no such tweaks have arrived, and the recent crackdown on CERB fraud would suggest the government is serious about squaring CERB recipients’ taxes.

How big a hit am I facing?

It depends entirely on how much money you make in 2020.

If you make very little before and after CERB, you may not have to pay anything. The basic personal exemption for federal taxes for 2020 is $13,229, so if you make less than that this year, you won’t owe federal income taxes.

If your only income in 2020 is CERB, and you got the full $12,000, you will owe nothing in Alberta, Quebec and Saskatchewan, but elsewhere you will owe provincial taxes of between $46 (Nova Scotia) and $234 (Manitoba).

Once you get past those personal exemption amounts, the amount owing rises into the thousands quickly. Everyone’s situation is different, so you will have to assess your own.

Get an idea of what you will have earned

To figure out what the tax hit will be on your CERB payments, you’ll need three numbers:

What you made this year before CERB
how much you got and/or will get from CERB
what you think you will make this year after CERB

For many, that last number may be little more than a guess, but even a guess is better than nothing.

Once you have these numbers, you can figure out how much you are likely to owe in taxes.

Joe Devaney, a chartered accountant, financial advisor and board member of VideoTax.ca, suggests using the basic tax calculator at TaxTips.ca.

“Enter in all of your expected non-CERB income for 2020. Note the resulting taxes payable. Run it again including your CERB payments. The difference is what you should expect to pay, and budget accordingly,” Devaney wrote in an email to HuffPost Canada.

But what does “budget accordingly” mean?

One strategy is to open a separate savings account from the one you use on a daily basis, and deposit a chunk of any income into that account, said Jordan Damiani, a senior wealth advisor at Meridian Credit Union.

“If you need the CERB money right now, you might not be able to put anything away today. If you can, that’s helpful, but if you can’t, you can make up for that when you go back to work,” he said.

“It’s important to make sure you don’t just go from one financial hardship to another.”

If you’re working after CERB, you can actually ask your employer to take a bit more off in taxes from your paycheque, which will reduce (or even eliminate) what you owe on CERB at tax time, Damiani suggested.

For some people, it might make sense to put those savings into an RRSP because that amount will be deducted from your income at tax time, so it could offset some or all of what you owe from CERB, Damiani said. But unless you’re a whiz with these tax numbers, it’s best to get a financial advisor’s opinion on that strategy.

What if I just can’t save any money?

If the hope of some change to CERB’s tax status doesn’t come through, and you don’t have the money, your only choice will be to pay the taxes late.

If you do that, make sure you file your tax return on time, Devaney says ― because otherwise CRA charges a five per cent late fee, plus one per cent for every month the amount owed isn’t paid.

You can also arrange a payment schedule with CRA, Devaney noted, though they will still charge interest.

But he suggested the tax collector may be a little more lenient than usual next year.

“The CRA has encouraged applying for relief for late payments related to COVID-19 issues. However, this appears to relate only to filings in 2020. It is uncertain whether relief will be available, and under what circumstances, next year.”

Steveson wrestled 42 times as a heavyweight for Apple Valley this winter. All but one ended the same way: with Steveson’s opponent flat on his back. With 41 pins in his perfect 42-0 season, Steveson took dominance to a new level. And that kind of dominance earned him the title of American Family Insurance ALL-USA Wrestler of the Year.

The Big Show, Tye Dillinger & Erick Rowan are currently in Phoenix, Arizona, the site of tonight’s Royal Rumble PPV, according to PWInsider.

The report says that along with those three, Hornswoggle could also be a possible entrant in the rumble, but has yet to be spotted in the area.

Here are the 19 announced names for The Men’s Royal Rumble Match: R-Truth (at #30), Drew McIntyre, Big E, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, Seth Rollins, Jeff Hardy, Dean Ambrose, Samoa Joe, Bobby Lashley, Elias, Baron Corbin, Andrade, Jinder Mahal, Rey Mysterio, Mustafa Ali, Apollo Crews, Titus O’Neil & Randy Orton.

As previously reported, WWE Hall Of Famer Kurt Angle, Bray Wyatt & The Velveteen Dream have been discussed as possible Royal Rumble Match surprises for tonight, according to a report from @Wrestlevotes. There is no confirmation on their appearances, but they have been discussed in talks for the past few weeks.

It is worth noting that Angle returned to the ring at a WWE Live Event last weekend, losing a singles match to Baron Corbin.

No Package Or Device Found At Mall Of Georgia

BUFORD, GA — Gwinnett County Police have not found any suspicious devices or packages at the Mall of Georgia following a report of suspicious threats made there Wednesday. This update was provided at 3:51 p.m. on Twitter.

Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters combed through the mall Wednesday afternoon while a helicopter flew over the mall parking lot to spot any suspicious vehicles for officers on the ground.

The Mall of Georgia was not closed during the search, but the public was asked to stay away for more than an hour as authorities searched every store in the mall.

2017 ASICS All-America Wrestling Team

Irvine, CA – May 26, 2017 – ASICS America Corporation is pleased to announce the 32nd annual ASICS All-America Wrestling Team, and honors seniors Yianni Diakomihalis (145) of Hilton (N.Y.) and Chase Singletary (220) of Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy and juniors Gavin Teasdale (126) and Gable Steveson (285) of Apple Valley (Minn.) as repeat First Team selections.

The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible.

“This team represents the best of the best in our schools today,” said Neil Duncan of TW Promotions wrestling agency for ASICS America. “We are proud to have these young men, with their talent and work ethic, representing us. They are clearly the World and Olympic champions of the future.”

The ASICS All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes – the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. To be considered, a wrestler must have competed during the scholastic season, and all team members were selected at the weight class at which they competed, or would have competed, in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year.

Singletary finished his career with five titles – two National Prep championships and three Florida state titles – and Diakomihalis, Daton Fix (132) of Sand Springs (Okla.) Charles Page, Vitali Arujau (138) of Syosset (N.Y.) and Brady Berge (160) of Kasson-Mantorville (Minn.) all won four state titles.

Teasdale, a three-time AA state champion and the First Team selection at 113 pounds in 2016, led a Keystone State sweep of the top three spots at 126. Seniors Austin DeSanto of Reading Exeter Township and Spencer Lee of Murrysville Franklin Regional took the Second and Third Team spots, respectively, after DeSanto’s 6-5 victory over Lee, a three-time First Team member, in the AAA state final. Diakomihalis, the First Team selection at 138 in 2016, was unable to complete a bid for a fifth state title due to injury. Singletary and Steveson also moved up a weight after earning First Team honors at 195 and 220, respectively, in 2016.

This year’s First Team was dominated by upperclassmen – nine seniors and five juniors.

For the first time since 2004, no freshman or sophomore was voted to the First Team, and no freshman made the elite squad for the first time since 2011. Teasdale and Steveson were two of the five juniors selected, with the others at the first three weight classes: Malik Heinselman of Castle Rock (Colo.) Castle View at 106, Aaron Cashman of Shakopee (Minn.) at 113 and Patrick Glory of Morristown (N.J.) Delbarton at 120.

In addition to their 42 scholastic titles, the 14 First Team members combined to post three Junior National and nine Cadet National titles, and five are World Team members. The Second Team owns 31 state or National Prep titles, and the Third Team accumulated 30. The Second Team owns eight Cadet National titles and three World Team berths, and the Third Team one Junior National and five Cadet National crowns, along with two World Team berths.

Three states, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania, each had three First Team selections. Cashman, Berge and Steveson were Minnesota’s selections. Arujau, Diakomihalis and senior Louie DePrez (182), a second selection from Hilton, represented New York. Teasdale and seniors Cameron Coy (152) of Harrison City Penn-Trafford and Mikey Labriola (170) of Bethlehem Catholic were Pennsylvania’s selections. New Jersey had a pair of First Team selections, Glory and Singletary. Completing the First Team: senior Jacob Warner of Washington (Ill.) at 195.

Eleven high schools had multiple wrestlers selected, led by Lombard (Ill.) Montini and Orlando (Fla.) Lake Highland Preparatory, each with three. Blair Academy, Delbarton, Hilton, Albertville (Minn.) St. Michael-Albertville, Bound Brook (N.J.), Clovis (Calif.), Malvern Preparatory (Pa.), Nazareth (Pa.) and Roseburg (Ore.) each had two selections.

Pennsylvania placed 20 wrestlers on the squad, with Ohio (12), Illinois (11), New Jersey (10) and California (nine) rounding out the top five. Pennsylvania placed 10 on the top three teams, followed by California, Minnesota and Ohio, with four each. Minnesota had six overall selections and New York had five. The 112 wrestlers selected come from 28 states.

Becky Lynch Talks WrestleMania 35, Hornswoggle/WWE Update, Shane

Below is a video of Kayla Braxton talking to Becky Lynch after last Sunday night’s Women’s Royal Rumble Match win in Phoenix. Becky said that she was disappointed with the loss to SmackDown Women’s Champion Asuka but she saw an opportunity in The Rumble Match and she seized it. Becky also said that there was nothing that would keep her from the goal of main eventing WrestleMania 35 and that is where she is headed now.

Hornswoggle’s WWE Royal Rumble appearance was just a one-time deal, according to PWInsider. The former WWE Cruiserweight Champion is not back with the company.

New SmackDown Tag Team Champion Shane McMahon recently took to Twitter and commented on being banged up following the win with The Miz over The Bar at last Sunday night’s WWE Royal Rumble PPV Event.
Shane wrote, “A dream come true for me last night at #RoyalRumble. So happy for @mikethemiz. Big props and thanks to @WWESheamus and @WWECesaro for the opportunity. Just finished my third ice bath from last night. #BangedUp!”
