First lady Melania Trump’s parents have become US citizens after taking the citizenship oath during a ceremony on Thursday.

A lawyer for Viktor and Amalija Knavs revealed the Slovenian couple, who had already been living in the US as permanent residents, took the citizenship oath in New York City.

They came and went from the ceremony at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Homeland Security police.

There has been speculation that the President Donald Trump’s in-laws may have benefited from the “chain migration” process that he has claimed endangers Americans and vowed to restrict.

According to experts, there are two main ways the First Lady’s parents could have achieved citizenship status – either through sponsorship from their daughter or an employer.

The latter is unlikely, since applicants must prove they could do a job no other American could.

Mr Knavs, who at 74, is two years older than Mr Trump, is thought to have worked as a car dealer while Mrs Knavs, 73, worked in a textile factory. Both are now believed to be retired.

Mr Trump has been a repeated critic of what he calls “chain migration”, where immigrants can bring relatives into America after moving themselves.

Under the current rules, US citizens can sponsor their parents and siblings to get legal residency in the country. Mr Trump has called it a "broken system" and wants to limit the rules to just spouses and young children.

The Knavses raised Melania in the rural industrial town of Sevnica while Slovenia was under Communist rule. The first lady, born Melanija, changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modeling. She settled in New York in 1996 and met Mr Trump two years later.

It is unclear when Mrs Trump’s parents arrived in the US but Michael Wildes, an immigration lawyer who represents the First Lady and her family, has previously confirmed the pair were both lawfully admitted to America as permanent residents.

“The family, as they are not part of the administration, has asked that their privacy be respected, so I will not comment further on this matter,” he said

It is perhaps one of the more unusual calls received by German police. "Help, I am being pursued by a squirrel," said the terrified man when he telephoned the emergency services in the city of Karlsruhe.

And not just any squirrel. When a squad car arrived it turned out to be a baby squirrel.

The rescue proved simple when the tiny rodent, exhausted by the pursuit, promptly fell asleep.

Officers said the squirrel was probably simply looking for a new home.

“It often happens that squirrels which have lost their mothers look for a replacement and then focus their efforts on one person,” Christina Krenz, police spokeswoman, told The Guardian.

She added that the animals could be “very persistent, not just running behind someone, but entirely fixated on them”.

“It can be pretty scary. The man didn’t know what to do and so he called the police,” she said. “He was certainly feeling a bit threatened.”

And squirrels have been known to attack humans.

In July last year, the New York parks department warned visitors to look out for an unusually aggressive squirrel in Prospect Park after five people reported being bitten.

Two years earlier, another squirrel became notorious in California for biting eight people.

The German police officers, however, seemed to take the threat from the tiny terror in their stride.

"Squirrel becomes our new mascot, christened Karl-Friedrich," they said in their police report.

"The squirrel has fallen asleep because of fright," they added.

Police took the squirrel into police custody, and then to an animal rescue centre, where they said it was being well looked after.

Big News for the Bella’s

Brie and Bryan will be parents soon.

Brie Bella and Daniel Bryan are expecting their first child in the spring of 2017. “It has always been a dream of mine to become a mother,” Brie said in an interview with E! News. “Now that it is finally real, it fills me up with so much happiness. I can’t wait to see my husband, Bryan, be a father to our child. I am so excited for this new chapter in our lives.”

Bryan said, “The day we found out, I just couldn’t stop smiling. We are so excited to be parents. Every time I look at Brie’s stomach, I’m amazed that there is a little life in there.” The couple will be featured on Total Bellas, which premieres on E! tonight at 8 p.m. ET.

It was announced on last night’s SmackDown that Nikki Bella will face Carmella at the brand’s upcoming No Mercy pay-per-view this Sunday. Daniel Bryan also tweeted on Wednesday that Jack Swagger will face Baron Corbin at the PPV.

The Spirit Squad made an appearance on last night’s SmackDown in a segment with Dolph Ziggler and The Miz.
The second annual Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic kicks off on NXT TV tonight with NXT tag champs The Revival vs. Cedric Alexander & Andrade “Cien” Almas in the show’s main event.
In an interview, Cedric Alexander discussed his match with Kota Ibushi and the reaction he received from the crowd and backstage.
NXT has rescheduled two Florida house shows this week because of the impending threat of Hurricane Matthew. Friday’s show in Crystal River has been rescheduled to October 29th, while Saturday’s show in Fort Pierce will now take place on October 14th.
The next season of Total Divas will premiere on E! on November 16th.

India will launch its first manned space mission by 2022 and roll out a health insurance scheme from September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday in his last Independence Day speech ahead of next year’s general election.

Modi, a powerful speaker who will seek re-election in the world’s biggest democracy early next year, used the speech to broadcast his government’s achievements, amid concerns about lack of jobs and rising violence against the Muslim minority.

Wearing a flowing saffron turban, the Hindu nationalist leader also announced the plan to take the "Indian tricolour to space" in a manned mission that would make India the fourth nation to launch one, after the United States, Russia and China.

"India is proud of our scientists, who are excelling in their research and are at the forefront of innovation," Modi said from the ramparts of the Mughal-era Red Fort in Delhi to a crowd numbering in the tens of thousands.

"In the year 2022 or, if possible, before, India will unfurl the tricolour in space."

Months after Modi’s election in 2014, India became the first Asian nation to reach Mars when its first mission to the red planet entered orbit, at a cost of $74 million, or less than the budget of the Hollywood space blockbuster "Gravity".

Modi said his government would launch from Sept. 25 a previously announced medical insurance scheme, dubbed ‘Modicare’, to give about 500 million poor people annual health cover of 500,000 rupees ($7,200) to treat serious illness.

Critics say that while Modi has adopted several initiatives, his tenure has been marred by violence against Muslim cattle traders and economic jolts through a countrywide ban on high-value notes and the botched launch of a unified taxation system.

Businesses have embraced the unified Goods and Services Tax after initial hiccups, Modi said in his speech.

In his 80-minute speech, Modi said the pace of building highways, electrifying villages and building toilets has increased since his landslide 2014 election win that devastated the main opposition Congress party.

Congress, which had ruled India for decades, is now trying to unify the opposition to challenge Modi, whose personal ratings remain high despite recent election setbacks.

"We want to progress more. There is no question of stopping or getting tired on the way," Modi said.

Thursday News Update

Billy Corgan has filed suit against Impact Ventures (TNA), Dixie Carter, Serg Salinas (Carter’s husband) and COO Dean Broadhead in court today. The documents are sealed but the gist is that things between Corgan and Carter fell apart over the past week or so, where Corgan was expecting to buy the company and for whatever reason, that was not going to happen. Corgan then wanted them to pay him back the money he had put into the company in funding the recent tapings and obviously they couldn’t do it. Corgan was asking for an injunction and will have a hearing on it this coming Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Corgan is requesting a jury trial. There are also issues with music rights for the show that airs tonight to the point at one point there was a question if Pop would air the show but the show is airing. The lawsuit being filed was not a surprise but everyone involved has gone silent since the suit was filed. There are also claims that in negotiations that key financial information was withheld.

There is a second lawsuit that was filed two weeks ago by Audience of One Productions, LLC against Impact Ventures (TNA), Aroluxe LLC, Ron Harris of Aroluxe and Dean Broadhead as well. This suit, filed in Richmond, VA, was for Audience of One doing production for TNA TV tapings in June and July 2015, as well as for last year’s Bound for Glory show. On October 23, 2015, Audience of One sent an invoice for $288,039.04 for the production of those events. On November 9, Broadhead of TNA sent them a letter saying TNA was working hard at closing a new television deal and to please hung in there with us. They sent another invoice of November 17, 2015. Broadhead continued to stall them from collecting. Broadhead on January 29, 2016, paid some of the workers a total of $29,001.57. Broadhead then proposed a payment plan for six payments from March through August. TNA made the first payment but haven’t paid anything since, according to the complaint. They are asking for the remaining owed $222,123.43 plus interest.

One of the most expensive pro wrestling shows of 2017 will be an April show in Qatar for Qatar Pro Wrestling. Among the names listed as coming are Booker T, Eddie Edwards Kurt Angle, Road Warrior Animal, Johnny Mundo, Rey Mysterio, Sting, Bob Holly, Bobby Lashley, Alberto El Patron, Ryback, Great Khali, Sonjay Dutt, Chris Masters, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Carlito.

Roderick Strong debuts at tonight’s NXT tapings as the tag team partner of Austin Aries in the Dusty Rhodes tournament.
Paige has said that she will be undergoing surgery this coming Wednesday. As reported in the new Observer, that has been a contentious situation.
While everyone already knew this, WWE did make it official that the main event of the next Takeover show on 11/19 in Toronto is Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT title. The angles building that up and the rest of the card should be promoted at tonight’s tapings.
Bret Hart on Facebook wrote an apology to Michael Hayes, HHH and Seth Rollins regarding things he’s said about all three in the past. He said it was unfair what he wrote about The Freebirds because they did great business in Texas with the Von Erichs and that Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, Buddy Roberts and Ronnie (he meant Jimmy) Garvin always treated him with respect. But he did say that he believes Owen Hart, Brian Pillman, Davey Boy Smith, Dynamite Kid, Jimmy Hart, The Rougeau Brothers,The Killer Bees, Demolition, Rick Rude, King Kong Bundy and One Man Gang should all be in the WWE Hall of Fame.
Not sure if Hayes cut a promo on Hart on Ric Flair’s podcast because I don’t know if it has been taped yet. But Hayes was planning to do so as he wasn’t happy with what Hart said about The Freebirds not belonging in the WWE Hall of Fame.

Paige VanZant vs. Michelle Waterson will headline the 12/17 FOX show from the new Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, the site WWE ran No Mercy in this past week. We talked heavily last night on why this is a very interesting experiment.
Want to make a note regarding the departure of Dave Sholler, the longtime VP of Communications of UFC, who is leaving for an executive role with the Philadelphia 76ers. I had worked with Sholler dating back to the WEC days where he was the head, and he was a great guy to work with in what wasn’t always the easiest of jobs and with him the best in his new role. Sholler will be leaving the company after the Madison Square Garden show.

Doo Ho Choi vs. Cub Swanson was announced today for the 12/30 UFC 206 show in Las Vegas. That is a very interesting fight as both guys have real firepower. This is the biggest test of Choi’s career.

Donald Trump has called America’s press "the opposition party" after more than 300 newspapers coordinated to rebuke his frequent attacks on the media.

The US president accused The Boston Globe, which called for the nationwide denouncement, of being "in collusion" with other papers.

The paper had pledged to write an editorial "on the dangers of the administration’s assault on the press" on August 16, and asked others to do the same.

Some 350 US national and regional newspapers heeded the call, including the New York Times, the pro-Trump tabloid the New York Post and some local papers in states that Mr Trump won during the 2016 presidential election.

The Globe said it coordinated publication among the newspapers and carried details of it on a database on its website.

Each paper ran an editorial, which is usually an unsigned article that reflects the opinion of an editorial board on a particular subject and is separate from the news and other sections in a paper.

The Globe’s editorial accused Mr Trump of carrying out a "sustained assault on the free press."

Waking up to the simultaneous editorials, the US president used Twitter to presented himself as at war with the press. "THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY. It is very bad for our Great Country….BUT WE ARE WINNING!", he said.

Mr Trump said The Boston Globe was “in collusion” with other newspapers for leading the editorial effort.

"The greatness of America is dependent on the role of a free press to speak the truth to the powerful," the Globe’s editorial said. "To label the press ‘the enemy of the people’ is as un-American as it is dangerous to the civic compact we have shared for more than two centuries."

The president’s own campaign team is currently being investigated for possible collusion with Russia in the 2016 election.

In a subsequent tweet, Mr Trump said he supported “true FREEDOM OF THE PRESS” but repeated accusations that most reporters were "fake" or "pushing a political agenda".

Mr Trump has frequently criticised journalists and described news reports that contradict his opinion or policy positions as fake news.

"News reporters and editors are human, and make mistakes. Correcting them is core to our job," it said. "But insisting that truths you don’t like are ‘fake news’ is dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy. And calling journalists the ‘enemy of the people’ is dangerous, period."

The unified response in editorials across the country on Thursday came after Mr Trump announced he had revoked the security clearance of former CIA director John Brennan, a vocal critic of the president.

Mr Trump has also said the security clearances of several other former intelligence officials, including James Clapper, the former Director of National Intelligence, and ex-FBI Director James Comey are "under review".

All of the individuals have publicly rebuked the president or are people whom Mr Trump appears to believe are against him.

Democrats have called it an "enemies list," a reference to the Nixon White House, which kept a list of President Richard Nixon’s political opponents to be targeted with punitive measures.

Former CIA directors and other top national security officials are typically allowed to keep their clearances so they can be in a position to advise their successors and to hold certain jobs.

Mr Brennan, who has served three presidents, has accused Mr Trump’s campaign of colluding with Russia to sway the 2016 election and claims he is now desperate to end the special counsel’s investigation.

In an op-ed in The New York Times, the former spy chief wrote: "Trump clearly has become more desperate to protect himself and those close to him, which is why he made the politically motivated decision to revoke my security clearance in an attempt to scare into silence others who might dare to challenge him."

Mr Trump himself drew a direct connection between the removal of Mr Brennan’s clearance and the Russia probe, telling The Wall Street Journal the investigation was a "sham," and "these people led it!"

It was a swift departure from the official explanation given by the White House on Wednesday, which cited "the risks" posed by what it termed Mr Brennan’s "erratic conduct and behaviour".

Later in the day the retired US Navy admiral who oversaw the raid that killed Osama bin Laden asked Mr Trump to revoke his security clearance.

William McRaven, writing in the Washington Post, said he would "consider it an honour" to "add my name to the list of men and women who have spoken up against your presidency".

He accused Mr Trump of "McCarthy-era tactics" and claimed the president had "embarrassed us in the eyes of our children, humiliated us on the world stage and, worst of all, divided us as a nation".

Following an at times lackluster outing at EVOLVE 70, Sunday night saw EVOLVE present what might have been the company’s best show of the year.

While everything on EVOLVE 71 was good, the most surprising bright spot was Timothy Thatcher taking on Drew Gulak in the show’s opener. The iPPV portion of the broadcast opened with Thatcher and Gulak in street clothes ready to go at it after a segment with William Regal before the show started, and Thatcher showed the fire that’s too often been lacking in his EVOLVE matches.

Thatcher and Gulak brawled throughout the arena, and outside of it, in a very good match. And it was Gulak who picked up the win in the non-title street fight after he caught Thatcher in the ropes with a dragon sleeper.

I wasn’t sure what the direction for Thatcher was after getting a decisive win over Ethan Page on Saturday night, and I’m still not sure where his title reign goes from here, but the Thatcher that faced Gulak on Sunday night was the best version of him. Thatcher had teased a more aggressive turn in his match against Gulak in August, and we saw a lot of that in this match.

And we got some idea of what’s next for Thatcher after the match, as he accepted Stokely Hathaway’s proposal to join the Dream Team. The pairing is an obviously odd one, but having Hathaway at Thatcher’s side should provide an interesting element to his character and present a more clear direction.

After losing to Thatcher on Saturday night, Page also got back on the right track at EVOLVE 71. Page got a clean win over Sami Callihan in a hard-hitting sprint after hitting a package piledriver.

Before his match against Callihan, Page promised to bring utter chaos to EVOLVE. And he managed to do so later in the show. Along with The Gatekeepers, Page came out to attack Zack Sabre Jr. after Sabre beat Fred Yehi in an excellent mat-based match. Sabre was stating his intent to challenge for Thatcher’s title when Page hit the ring to lay him out.

In what was likely the best match on the show, Matt Riddle once again delivered in the main event after being positioned as the new face of EVOLVE following Johnny Gargano’s departure. It was a battle between two of 2016’s most impressive wrestlers as Riddle faced off against Chris Hero, and Hero came out on top after hitting an elbow to the back of the head following an excellent finishing sequence.

After the match, Catch Point was more united than ever as they saved Riddle from a beat down at the hands of Hero, DUSTIN, and Drew Galloway.

What made EVOLVE 71 so impressive was the depth of the card. And that was on display in the second match of the night as Catch Point’s Tracy Williams took on Jason Kincaid. The two had a really good match, with Williams getting the win after hitting a big piledriver. Kincaid looked especially good in the match while showcasing some unique offense, and he’s someone that should definitely find a place on future EVOLVE cards.

The show also saw DUSTIN defeat Darby Allin. But if there’s anything the match will be remembered for, it’s Allin’s death-defying Coffin Drop trust fall off of one of the arena’s pillars. It’s going to take a lot to fill the void on the card left by Gargano and TJ Perkins, but having new regulars like Allin is helping to alleviate some of the burden.

The Gatekeepers also again managed to look impressive as they won in a quick squash against Joe Coleman and Eric Locker.

Final thoughts:

EVOLVE 71 was everything that Saturday night’s show wasn’t. It was one of EVOLVE’s best outings of the year, and the depth of the card even after the loss of Gargano and Perkins was impressive. Every match was worth seeing, with Riddle vs. Hero and Sabre vs. Yehi being the show’s most obvious highlights. But picking the match of the night off of this card will really depend on personal preference.

A plan to withdraw police officers from lifeguard duty on French beaches is facing fierce opposition by mayors concerned about public safety and terrorism.

For six decades, strapping riot police standing in as lifeguards have been a reassuring presence on French beaches.

But many have been stood down in recent years and the rest are due to be pulled back indefinitely amid Emmanuel Macron’s budget cuts.

Many mayors and MPs fear a potential increase in the already high summer average of three drownings a day, blamed on bathing in unsupervised areas and poor swimming skills. They also argue that holidaymakers would be left more vulnerable to troublemakers or terrorists.

After a string of attacks in France, CRS riot police in 2016 began bringing their guns while on lifeguard duty at France’s busiest resorts during les grandes vacances in July and August.

But their numbers have dwindled as successive governments have cut costs, while many have been deployed elsewhere as part of a beefed-up police presence on French streets since the 2015 Paris attacks.

This year only 300 CRS officers served as lifeguards, compared to 720 in 2002 and 500 in 2015. They cost the state an estimated £4 million per year, which is “too expensive”, the French national audit office says.

Gérard Collomb, the interior minister, is planning to end CRS lifeguard duty because “keeping watch over beaches and helping people in difficulty while swimming is not a core CRS mission.”

Daniel Fasquelle, a conservative MP for the Calais area, said: “Removing the CRS would be a considerable loss for the safety of our fellow-citizens and foreign tourists on our beaches because they can supervise swimmers, prevent rowdy behaviour and take action against the threat of a terrorist attack.”

Mr Fasquelle, from the main opposition party, The Republicans, and several local mayors have highlighted the danger of an attack in France similar to the 2015 mass shooting on a Tunisian beach packed with foreign tourists.

The following year police lifeguards in France started carrying automatic pistols in waterproof bags.

The government wants local communities to foot the bill for civilian lifeguards, possibly backed up by municipal police, who are unarmed.

But Mr Fasquelle said: “Safety on the beach and elsewhere is a responsibility of the state, not of local communities.”

Laurent Peyrondet, the centrist mayor of Lacanau, a south-western resort that has four lifeguard towers on its 2.5 mile beach, said the audit office was focussing exclusively on funding. “The audit office should not be determining the future of the CRS lifeguards, whose primary mission is to save bathers from drowning, but also to police the beaches.”

Cyril Lambert, a CRS lifeguard and police union representative, said: “Our presence on beaches is essential given the risk of attacks.”

With AJ Styles unable to wrestle, last night’s SmackDown didn’t feature the previously scheduled WWE World Championship match between him and James Ellsworth. Instead, the main event of the show was The Miz defending the Intercontinental Championship against Dean Ambrose.

Dutch detectives said on Wednesday they have identified a suspect in the brutal murder of a young boy two decades ago, in a case that has gripped the Netherlands.

Nicky Verstappen’s body was found on August 11 1998, a day after he disappeared from a youth camp in southern Limburg province. He had been sexually abused before he was killed.

Police at the time mounted a massive search closely followed by local media and the Dutch public, but the 11-year-old boy’s killer was never found.

As time ran out to catch the suspect, police earlier this year appealed to more than 20,000 men to donate DNA samples in a bid to close in on the perpetrator.

"New investigative techniques gave us new opportunities. We now have a one-on-one DNA match with the (DNA) traces found on Verstappen’s body," police detective Ferdinand Schellinkhout told a press conference in the southern city of Maastricht on Wednesday.

His family reported him missing in April after the former scout worker, who is believed to be a survival expert, told them he was going for a walk in the mountains, Schellinkhout said.

"We are convinced that the suspect has gone into hiding," Limburg police chief Ingrid Schaefer-Poels told journalists, asking the public to contact police with any information of his whereabouts.

Wednesday’s announcement brings Verstappen’s family one step closer to what happened to Nicky the night he disappeared, in what became one of the most extensive murder investigations to date in the Netherlands.

Police said new digital techniques helped them to develop a DNA profile in 2008, from traces found on Verstappen’s clothing, but there had been no match.

Earlier this year, some 16,000 men living in the area where Verstappen was murdered volunteered to hand over DNA samples after a call by detectives.

However, Brech who was 35 at the time, was not among the volunteers but as he was previously interviewed as a witness, police became suspicious.

When his family reported him as missing, Dutch and French police searched his cabin in the Vosges region.

"We found traces of DNA on his personal belongings. It was a match," said chief prosecutor Jan Eland.

A European-wide warrant for Brech’s arrest was issued on June 12.
