WWE Champion Drew McIntyre is set to take part in a segment with his Money in the Bank challenger on this coming Monday’s episode of Raw.

During SmackDown tonight, a commercial aired advertising that McIntyre and Seth Rollins will have a contract signing for their title match at Money in the Bank on Monday’s Raw. Money in the Bank is set for Sunday, May 10.

McIntyre defending his WWE Championship against Rollins at the pay-per-view was made official on Raw this Monday. After being attacked by Rollins the previous week and laid out with a superkick and two curb stomps, McIntyre challenged Rollins to face him at Money in the Bank. A video then aired later where Rollins accepted McIntyre’s challenge.

In his promo, Rollins said he wasn’t accepting the challenge out of respect or disdain — but out of necessity. Rollins said he and McIntyre have a lot in common, but the WWE universe needs a leader now more than ever. Rollins said he’s a proven leader and McIntyre isn’t.

McIntyre became the WWE Champion by defeating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36. His first title defense was against Big Show. It aired on the post-WrestleMania episode of Raw, with WWE saying it was exclusive footage from after McIntyre won the title from Lesnar on the second night of WrestleMania.

Bray Wyatt will officially be the first challenger for Braun Strowman’s Universal Championship.

It was announced during tonight’s SmackDown that Strowman will defend his Universal title against Wyatt at Money in the Bank. The match was advertised as Strowman vs. Wyatt and not Strowman vs. The Fiend.

Wyatt being Strowman’s first challenger was made apparent when a Firefly Fun House video interrupted Strowman after he defeated Shinsuke Nakamura last week. In the video, Wyatt referenced his history with Strowman from the Wyatt Family and said Strowman has something he wants back — the Universal Championship.

Strowman appeared on a Moment of Bliss segment with Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross at the start of SmackDown tonight. Strowman said the Wyatt Family is part of his past that he’s trying to forget. He said he wasn’t going to play Wyatt’s games. But Strowman then saw a gift in the ring that he thought was from Bliss. Instead, he opened it up and it was his Wyatt Family sheep mask.

The Moment of Bliss segment ended with Wyatt’s laugh playing and an old picture of Strowman wearing the mask appearing on the screen.

Strowman won the Universal title from Goldberg at WrestleMania 36.

Money in the Bank is taking place on Sunday, May 10. The men’s and women’s Money in the Bank ladder matches are also set for the pay-per-view.

Three Money in the Bank qualifying matches have been announced for next week’s Raw.

MVP, in a VIP Lounge segment backstage, announced three matches that are set to take place for the first time ever next week. Rey Mysterio will battle Murphy, while Austin Theory will face Aleister Black. MVP then announced Apollo Crews versus himself. MVP called himself a ladder match legend.

Early on tonight’s episode of Raw, Asuka defeated Ruby Riott to earn a spot in the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match. Two more qualifying matches (Kairi Sane vs. Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler vs. Sarah Logan) are set to take place later tonight.

This year’s Money in the Bank ladder match will consist of two six-person ladder matches, with three wrestlers representing Raw and another three representing SmackDown. Two qualifying matches, Daniel Bryan vs. Cesaro and Dana Brooke vs. Naomi, has been announced for this Friday’s SmackDown.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Money in the Bank event will take place on May 10 at the WWE Performance Center.

With UFC, WWE and AEW as being among the last events still trying to run in the U.S., the last vestiges of doing empty arena matches may have been shut down.

On 4/1, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered a 30-day stay-at-home order except for essential businesses. That would in theory eliminate the planned 4/18 UFC 249 show that was targeted for the state, and also eliminate both WWE and AEW from taping at least in April in the state.

AEW had just moved out of Jacksonville and into Norcross, GA, just outside of Atlanta, a decision made on 3/27. WWE was planning on doing Smackdown live at the Performance Center on 4/10, and now they would have to find either a new location or do studio wrap-arounds of old matches.

However that isn’t so simple either because Connecticut, where the WWE studios are, also has a stay-at-home order for non-essential businesses.

ESPN reported about today’s conference call Donald Trump had with sports league commissioners, which also included both Vince McMahon and Dana White: “In a conference call with major league sports commissioners on Saturday, President Donald Trump said he believes the NFL season should start on time in September, sources familiar with the call told ESPN. Trump also said he hopes to have fans back in stadiums and arenas by August and September, sources said, though it is currently unclear if medical experts find that to be a realistic timeline amid the current coronavirus pandemic.NBA commissioner Adam Silver told those on the call that the leagues were the first to shut down and that they would love to lead the way in starting the economy once there was an ‘all clear’ from public health officials, sources familiar with the call told ESPN.”
Drew Gulak indicated that his match against Cesaro and Sami Zayn vs. Daniel Bryan will both be part of WrestleMania night one tonight.
Triple H responded to a question from TV Guide about how the coronavirus will affect professional wrestling long-term: “People keep saying ‘once everything gets back to normal’ — I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think the world has changed. I think that it will get back to some normalcy, but the new normal will be what is normal. It’s not going to be what it was before. How people do business, how people interact with each other… I think all of that will change. And for us, in some ways, the opportunity of doing these shows without fans and doing WrestleMania [with] these off-site shoots will open our eyes to different ways of doing things that we maybe didn’t see before and will change the product probably for the better in the long run.”
CBS Sports also interviewed Triple H.
ESPN has a piece on Brock Lesnar stories from those who know him. CM Punk spoke about Lesnar: “I don’t want to ruin his image. I think he’s a f—in’ sweetheart. This is a guy, when I got into MMA and I left wrestling, he was texting me, ‘Hey, if you need any help.’ I’m always kind of a standoffish guy. It’s hard to open up and trust people in the pro wrestling world. But he was never anything but a real sweetheart. It was a pleasure to work with him. He’s just a great guy, I think. I think I’m one of the lucky guys who he wanted to work with in pro wrestling. We put together a pretty special match. I don’t think Brock gets the credit for how smart of a wrestler he is. I didn’t know how Brock was going to be receptive to any ideas. So I, especially at that point in my career, I was like, ‘Let’s just go out there and call it in the ring.’ He was totally stoked to do that. I kind of said, ‘I just want to do this and this and this.’ He said, ‘Oh.’ After every idea I had, he had three ideas that spun off that he wanted to do. It was fun. That match is everything that I loved about pro wrestling. Just two guys coming together and being like, ‘F—, let’s just do whatever we want and have fun.’ I think Brock has got a big heart, and that’s something a lot of people don’t talk about. They’ll talk about the freak strength and the crazy athletic things he’s done in his career, the accomplishments. But they don’t talk about the fact that he loves his wife, his kids, lives on a farm and just kind of wants to be left alone. All the fame and the money and everything is really just a side effect of being successful at what he wants to do. And he does what he wants, when he wants. That’s the beauty of Brock Lesnar.”
FS1 is airing three WWE 24 episodes on Tuesday night. The WWE 24 on WrestleMania 31 starts at 8 p.m. Eastern, the episode on WrestleMania 33 starts at 9 p.m. Eastern, and the episode on WrestleMania 34 is at 10 p.m. Eastern. That leads in to a new episode of WWE Backstage.
The season five premiere of Total Bellas averaged 563,000 viewers on Thursday night. That’s up from every episode from season four, which aired on Sunday nights. The rating in the 18-49 demo for Thursday’s premiere was a 0.25.

Combate reported that UFC 250 is in jeopardy of not being able to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The report stated that the UFC has asked Jose Aldo (who is supposed to challenge Henry Cejudo for the bantamweight title in the main event) and Shogun Rua about the possibility of traveling to the United States and having the event there.
Khabib Nurmagomedov responded to Conor McGregor’s trash talk: “OK, a couple days ago, he sent message, ‘Hey, people, please take care of your family, be safe, stay home, government says stay home,’ — couple days ago. Now he talk, ‘I’m in good shape, blah blah blah, I’m gonna fight.’ This is fake. For me, it’s fake. I was always real. Maybe someone like, maybe someone don’t like. But this is not my job. But I was always real. But this guy’s fake.”
Coach John Kavanagh said there’s no chance of McGregor being a replacement at UFC 249.
Jairzinho Rozenstruik spoke about UFC 249 and wanting his fight with Francis Ngannou to be for the interim heavyweight title: “If it’s going to happen, I’m going to be on it for sure. Now, I see the main event is in trouble, so for me it would make it more interesting for me and Francis and also the fans. I mean, I’ve been training for four months, I’m ready to go, so I think they should put the interim belt and make it more interesting because the fans would love to see that. The fight between (Daniel Cormier) and Stipe, I don’t know how long that’s going to last,” he continued. “I think with this situation all the fights will be rebooked, so I think people are going to fight twice, maybe once a year. So we don’t know when this situation is going to have a resolution.”
Dominick Reyes said he was talking to the UFC about a rematch with Jon Jones in the early fall prior to the coronavirus pandemic impacting everything.
Alexander Gustafsson gave an update on his potential comeback: “I’m (going to be) honest with you: I’m 33 years old and I feel like I’ve got a couple more years in me. I just have to do it correctly this time, and I was actually looking to go to American before this coronavirus (expletive) happened — to go there and train just to get the feeling again and change the environment. I can’t give a yes or a no, but I’m training and it feels good.”

Ahead of the TNT Championship tournament, four of the wrestlers set for it will be in tag team action on this week’s episode of Dynamite.

AEW has announced that Cody & Darby Allin vs. Shawn Spears & Sammy Guevara will take place on Dynamite tomorrow. Those are the four wrestlers on the left side of the TNT Championship tournament bracket.

It will be Cody vs. Spears and Allin vs. Guevara in the first round of the TNT Championship tournament. The winners will advance to face each other in the semifinals.

The other half of the bracket for the TNT Championship tournament will be revealed on Dynamite tomorrow. It’s an eight-man, single-elimination tournament and will begin on Dynamite on Wednesday, April 8.

Dave Meltzer reported today that AEW’s TV is being moved out of Daily’s Place in Jacksonville and will now take place at an undisclosed location that’s believed to be in the Southeast. Meltzer wrote that it’s “believed they will be taping matches throughout Tuesday and Wednesday for this week’s Dynamite and Dark as well as future shows.”

Kenny Omega vs. Trent is also set for tomorrow’s Dynamite, along with Lance Archer making his AEW in-ring debut. Archer’s opponent hasn’t been revealed.

Irma Osorno, the coordinator for AAA, passed away earlier today in a bus accident. We don’t have any more details at this point.

Perro Aguayo Jr., one of the biggest stars in Mexican pro wrestling, shockingly passed away after a match in Tijuana last night at the age of 35.

The son of one of Mexico’s all-time most charismatic performers, Aguayo Jr. had started wrestling as a teenage and became an immediate star, and was AAA’s top heel performer. Aguayo Jr. was the top heel as well during CMLL’s last big run in the Mistico era.

There has been footage that has surfaced leading to the death last night of Perro Aguayo Jr. in a match in Tijuana with Rey Mysterio Jr. & Extreme Tiger (Tigre Uno in TNA) vs. Manik (T.J. Perkins of TNA) & Aguayo Jr.

Aguayo Jr. had gotten back in the ring after taking a spinning head scissors where he bumped to the floor from Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio Jr. gave him a low dropkick to the back to set up the 619. It is not clear whether Aguayo Jr. was selling or not when he first hit the ropes to get ready for the 619. He may have already been injured falling on the ropes, or, while selling, and being positioned badly, when Manik fell into the ropes to set up a double 619 spot, that was when the ropes whiplashed him, although it was likely the first spot immediately.

Sources who were at Hospital del Prado in Tijuana have said that the initial cause of death was cervical spine trauma coming from when the ropes snapped his neck.

He was already out when Mysterio went for the 619 and Mysterio Jr. saw he was in trouble and didn’t hit him. The belief was he was knocked out and they continued the match, although went right to the finish.

Konnan, at ringside, was trying to revive him and they eventually carried him out and paramedics arrived to the show, before he was rushed to the hospital.

The death will surely get significant media publicity in Mexico where he has been one of the top wrestling stars for nearly two decades, but with a lot of footage already out, it will probably get covered in the U.S. media as well. While not the same circumstances, the death is very eerily similar to that of Mitsuharu Misawa in the ring in Japan in 2009.

There was a moment in the last segment of the final Raw leading into Sunday’s WWE Wrestlemania 31 that was so imperceptible yet so effective—and potentially telling—that it makes one wonder why it wasn’t done more than once in the build to Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns. It was a moment that may have also confirmed that the focus for this Wrestlemania’s headline program has been misplaced all along.

There stood Paul Heyman, the advocate of WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, speaking with all of the usual bombast and braggadocio that accompanies standing beside the man who beat The Streak. All things considered, there wasn’t much out of the ordinary in Heyman’s unsurprisingly great promo—except for one small moment where Heyman, having spent the last several weeks telling the world that Reigns has no chance of defeating Lesnar at Wrestlemania, indicated that Lesnar can be beaten.

Granted, the method to which Heyman referred involved home invasion and absconding with Rena Lesnar and their two children, but what this did was establish six days out from the biggest show of the year that the nigh-unkillable beast has a weak spot. It took a man who had been promoted to an almost mythical status and busted him back down to mortality.

What made this work? Lesnar’s reaction. To that point, the champion had been alternating between pacing the ring restlessly and staring coolly into the distance—transitioning from a caged beast anxiously awaiting release to a calculating predator measuring a situation. But when Heyman mentioned Lesnar’s home? His wife? His children? He stood taken aback, staring at his advocate as if he had wounded him, almost indignant that Heyman possessed the temerity to say what he was saying.

He looked rattled. For the first time in a long time, Brock Lesnar expressed something approaching human emotion.

It was a subtle enough occurrence that it could very well have been inconsequential or even accidental—after all, if there’s one thing that WWE doesn’t quite get the hang of, it’s subtlety. That this moment centered around Heyman—the most capable storyteller in the company—might indicate otherwise.

The moment ended, Lesnar cooled, and everything returned otherwise to normal. The damage, however, had already been done. Lesnar—the unmoved, the unconquerable—looked vulnerable for the first time since he was elbowdropped through a table at Royal Rumble. Here, it did not come at the hands of an opponent, nor did it take an act of physicality. Rather, it took a few seemingly ill-timed and misplaced words from the man who is his advocate and, presumably, knows him better than anyone else on a professional level.

This moment is enough to raise the question of why the focus of Lesnar vs. Reigns was ever about anything but the dynamic between Lesnar and Heyman. After all, who better to rattle the cage of a beast than the man who holds the key to its pen?

Lesnar’s post-Mania status is very much in the air, and unless he has already signed a contract when the bell rings on Sunday, he’s going to lose the championship to Reigns. Make no mistake: there are very few scenarios that conclude with Lesnar retaining the title. Reigns, for all intents and purposes, is your next WWE World Heavyweight Champion. But there may only be one way that Lesnar losing to Reigns can be accomplished to any convincing degree: if it is a loss mitigated by the man with whom Lesnar has entrusted his weaknesses—Paul Heyman.

Reigns is an afterthought in the position of challenger; of the other possible matchups for Brock at Wrestlemania, Reigns’ through line—he wants to win the title because he doesn’t like being told he can’t—is arguably the weakest. Reigns has been flattening out with the audience from the moment he returned from his injury and flubbed his first backstage segment. He has not yet been accepted by the audience as a believable challenger to a man who has laid waste to everything in his path. If they had not bought Reigns as a legitimate contender by the end of Raw, then it stands to reason that they will not buy him at Wrestlemania or in the months after as either a legitimate top star or champion. Not unless he has a very convincing salesman at his side.

Last year, Heyman took a New Orleans crowd—still indignant and confused in the wake of The Undertaker’s unthinkable Wrestlemania loss the night prior—and worked them over in a single promo the way that a master potter molds clay. In the weeks since the infamous “1 in 21-and-1” promo, Heyman has owned every segment in which he has featured— crucial given how infrequently Lesnar has appeared on television since winning the championship. Unquestionably, Heyman has been the MVP of WWE programming for the last year, and the audience understands this.

It’s just as easily argued that Heyman has been the MVP of what little build there has been to Lesnar vs. Reigns. When Brock has contributed, he has generally been very good—particularly when he’s promising to mess Reigns up or storming out of pre-taped segments. But even with these contributions, the build to Lesnar vs. Reigns is practically non-existent without its star player—Heyman. Not only is Heyman the glue holding together the Wrestlemania headliner, but he may very well be the key to rejuvenating Reigns.

Heyman’s ability to make a malleable audience conform to whatever designs the company has is precisely why Heyman must help take the title off of Brock and transfer it onto Reigns. When Reigns wins—be it at Wrestlemania or on Raw the night after—it will not be a popular choice. It will be met with resistance and hostility from the San Jose crowd. That reaction, however, will probably not see anywhere near the backlash as last year’s decision to beat The Undertaker—a reaction that Heyman tempered and recalibrated a night later with just one promo.

Heyman’s potential motivations for turning on Brock are countless. Perhaps he couldn’t handle Brock’s erratic handling of his contract and the possibility of him shirking a sure thing for an uncertain future in UFC. Perhaps he felt that he had been left to carry the bag for a man who had grown overconfident in his untouchability. Perhaps he simply wanted to embrace another impossible challenge by killing the monster he created and backing the new next big thing. Whatever direction the story would move, chances are pretty good that Heyman could sell it to the audience. In a company that prides itself on telling stories, he is one of the very few actual storytellers—and almost unquestionably the best.

Aligning Heyman with Reigns would not just make the most sense from a narrative perspective, but it would also serve the most masters. In so doing, Heyman creates the best opportunity for WWE to transfer some of Lesnar’s mystique to Roman. It would also provide a memorable shock ending not terribly dissimilar in tone from that of the conclusion of arguably the best show in Wrestlemania history—Wrestlemania 17.

People may not immediately take to Reigns as a monster heel—particularly if he stands in as an ersatz Lesnar—but Heyman would do his damnedest to sell it to the best of his abilities. This partnership would allow Reigns to do what he did best as the enforcer of The Shield: look intimidating and beat people up. No goofy Loony Tunes promos. No hackneyed catch phrases. Just a big, scary-looking dude standing silently in the ring with his championship belt, daring anyone to try and take it off of him. It also arguably provides Reigns with the most opportunity for natural growth.

This opens a number of doors for programs and matches down the line. Maybe Brock comes back as a babyface to get his revenge. Maybe The Rock returns to try and return his cousin from the dark side. Maybe it’s as simple as the seemingly inevitable Cena/Reigns showdown.

But what it almost certainly does is keep Paul Heyman precisely where he belongs: in the spotlight at the top. After all, it’s where he’s been for the last year.
