Donald Trump moves to ban flavoured vaping products because ‘people are dying’

Donald Trump has moved to ban flavours used in e-cigarettes following a series of deaths linked to vaping. Across the United States six people have died and more than 450 have fallen ill in recent months, with symptoms including breathing difficulty and chest pain.

Several teenagers have been placed in medically induced comas. No single vaping device, ingredient or additive has been identified as the cause.

Mr Trump said: "Vaping has become very big business, giant, in a short period of time. We can’t have our youth be so affected. People are dying from vaping so were looking at it very closely. People are going to watch what we’re saying and parents are going to be a lot tougher with respect to their children."

He added: "People say vaping is wonderful. It’s really not wonderful, that’s one thing we can say definitely. We may well have to do something strong about it."

Mr Trump said his wife Melania, the first lady, had been involved in discussions about vaping because "she’s got a son, she feels very strongly about it."

Alex Azar, the health secretary, whose department oversees the Food and Drug Administration, which in turn regulates, e-cigarettes, said guidelines would be developed to remove all flavours from the market, especially those attractive to children.

It would take only weeks to formulate the guidelines. On Monday the FDA warned market-leading e-cigarette maker Juul to stop advertising itself as a less harmful alternative to smoking cigarettes.

E-cigarettes have been available in the US since 2006 and are sometimes used as an aid to quit smoking traditional tobacco products.

But there is little evidence that e-cigarettes are effective for helping smokers quit. They are also hugely popular among adolescents, who makers have targeted with fruit and candy flavourings.

Around 3.6 million US school pupils used vaping products in 2018, an increase of 1.5 million from the year before. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged people to cease vaping while investigations into deaths and illnesses are underway.

A spokeswoman for the American Lung Association said: "We’ve been sounding the alarm for a long time and are so grateful to hear the president’s announcement. "The only reason these flavours are out there is to attract kids and make the poison go down more easily."

Prosecutors in Manresa ‘Wolf Pack’ trial upgrade charges from sexual abuse to rape after outcry

Prosecutors in the latest Spanish gang rape trial have upgraded the charges against six men from sexual abuse to rape after an outcry from women’s rights protesters.

Activists sharply criticised what they described as lenient charges during the trial of seven men who stand accused of attacking a 14-year-old girl in Manresa, near Barcelona, in 2016.

Six of the men will have the charges upgraded from sexual assault to rape, while the seventh is accused of failing to prevent a crime after allegedly watching the rapes while masturbating.

Spain’s public prosecution service announced on Monday that it was demanding sentences of at least 14 years in prison for the six men it accuses of using intimidation to force their victim to have sex with them.

The case has strong echoes of the notorious ‘Wolf Pack’ gang rape in Pamplona, in which five men were twice acquitted of rape before Spain’s Supreme Court overruled lower courts.

The prosecutors in the Manresa case had said they would consider testimony given by the victim and a key witness in July before making a final decision on their official accusation when the trial resumed after a summer recess.

The seven men are on trial for the alleged gang rape of the girl in an abandoned factory in 2016.

She told the court that she had gone to the scene of the alleged crime with one of the men, who then invited his friends to take turns to rape her.

A witness said that the men brandished a gun and threatened to throw the girl in a river after they had finished abusing her.

Prosecutor Elena Contreras said on Monday that the men had acted like a criminal gang and had intimidated a lightly built and young victim, whose “understanding of events, willpower and capacity to react were clouded by the effects of drugs”.

Stating that the girl was afraid before, during and after the alleged attacks, Ms Contreras said it was not reasonable to ask victims to be seen as heroines.

“We must put the spotlight on the accused [who] seemed happy to trample her body in pursuit of amusement,” she added.

The socialist government is looking into reforming Spain’s rape laws to create one offence of non-consensual sex with no need to demonstrate physical force or intimidation.

Spain’s public prosecution service revealed last week that sexual offences had risen by 23 per cent in 2018 to just under 19,000.

India bans e-cigarettes after string of US deaths

India has become the latest country to ban e-cigarettes after a succession of high-profile deaths in the United States were attributed to vaping.

The use of e-cigarettes has been promoted as a healthier alternative to smoking tobacco but the announcement is a further blow to an industry estimated to be worth £9.2 billion.

It comes a day after New York became the second American state to ban vaping.

The sale of e-cigarettes containing nicotine has been previously banned in several European countries, including Sweden and Norway, as well as in Hong Kong, Japan and Brazil.

Rather than burning tobacco – which contains 7,000 harmful chemicals – the battery-powered devices heat up a flavoured liquid containing nicotine which then turns into a vapour and is inhaled.

They do not contain ash, tar or carbon monoxide.

However, research into the long-term use of e-cigarettes is fairly limited as they have only been on the market since 2003.

Some studies have found that vaping products can contain carcinogens including formaldehyde and benzene.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has warned vaping for just a year could cause seizures and lung damage.

President Donald Trump has said he will be releasing ‘some very strong recommendations’ on vaping over the next few weeks.

It comes after seven people died in the U.S.A since August as a result of severe pulmonary diseases caused by vaping.

Researchers said they are investigating a further 380 cases of lung illness believed to be caused by e-cigarettes.

India has 106 million adult smokers – the highest number in the world after China – and firms such as Juul and Philip Morris had planned to capitalize on this by launching e-cigarettes.

Their plans had faced opposition from tobacco-farmers’ unions who lobbied the Indian Government to ban the products over fears they could lead to job losses.

An estimated 45 million Indians depend on the tobacco industry for their livelihoods. The Indian Government has introduced harsh penalties for those found flaunting the ban. First-time offenders will face a one-year jail term and a fine of ₹100,000 (£1,125).

Hamilton expects gesture of unity by drivers on Sunday

Lewis Hamilton expects drivers to take a united stand against racism before this Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, although it has not yet been decided whether the collective gesture would involve taking a knee.

Formula 1’s return to action in these troubled times comes against a backdrop of initiatives against racial injustice launched by the sport, Mercedes and Hamilton himself.

McLaren’s Lando Norris hinted at drivers taking a knee on Sunday’s grid, but Hamilton says the symbolic gesture against racism is currently “not at the top of my mind”.

Hamilton: Fellow drivers not the target of ‘staying silent’ rant

“I have been asked the question multiple times and it has not really been a priority for me to come with a plan to come and kneel at the start line. So we’ll see Sunday,” said the sic-time world champion ahead of this weekend’s opening race of the 2020 season.

“I’m sure as drivers we will stand to represent something. Whatever we do, we will try to do it united.

“I think it’s really important that we remain united, or we become united I would say also in this sport. We really do have to fight for the injustices and the inequality.”

Hamilton underscored the importance of the motorsport community sustaining its efforts to improve diversity and inclusion on a continual basis.

“Whether or not it’s sustainable, it has to be. This is the whole point of me mentioning it,” he added.

“We have to stay on it. Black people don’t have the privilege of being able to take a moment out. It is something we have to stay on top off; the industry has to stay on top of.

“We all have to come together, each of our voices is powerful and if we bring them together collectively, we can have a huge impact.”

Vince McMahon’s ‘Chosen’ Star for WM35, Undertaker/Starrcast News

WrestleMania 35 will be taking place this weekend and it is set to feature a ton of matches that fans are looking forward to seeing. Of course, multiple title matches will be taking place during the show, and while fans are behind the likes of Kofi Kingston, Asuka, and other stars on the roster, Vince McMahon is the person who ultimately decides on all of the match outcomes. For this year’s WrestleMania show, McMahon apparently has a “chosen” superstar. This means that McMahon is now completely behind this person and has decided to go all in on making this individual a star. According to the newest reports, the coronation for this rumored star will be taking place at WrestleMania 35 this Sunday night.
A member of the WWE roster has reportedly been “chosen” to become a top star by Vince McMahon, and that person is Becky Lynch. According to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer, McMahon has been sold on Lynch for months now. The reason why WWE has put both Women’s Championships on the line for the Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 35 is because the match is being hyped as the biggest women’s match of all time, and Becky will therefore become the biggest female star in the company when she wins. Meltzer noted that Lynch is almost considered a lock to win her match against Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey this Sunday, which means that she could be Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion very soon.
It was certainly shocking when it was first announced that The Undertaker would be appearing at the Starrcast event this May. The event mark a rare non-WWE wrestling appearance for “The Deadman,” but it still hasn’t been made clear what Undertaker will be doing at Starrcast. According to Conrad Thompson, plans for a possible stage show with “The Phenom” have fallen through. Thompson said on the Mat Men podcast that there were plans for a stage show involving The Undertaker, but it fell apart when he wanted to broadcast it on FITE TV. He also discussed the “Dead Man Talking” trademark and said that it was for a series of speaking tour shows possibly involving Bruce Prichard and The Undertaker before Prichard was rehired by WWE earlier this year.

“When we first started talking about having The Undertaker there at Starrcast, we were sort of kicking around ‘Hey, what could we do?’ I though, ‘Well, it would be awesome if we could do a meet and greet and then have a stage show, and through the discourse with his management they agreed. They didn’t hate the idea, but they had a lot of conditions, [such as] ‘We want to know who the host is.’ So I said, ‘Well, I think he’s friends with Bruce Prichard, what about Bruce?’ Bruce was approved, ‘Okay, great, we love Bruce.’ Then the wrinkle came ‘Well you can’t film it, or air it.’ Well, you know, part of my strategy for Starrcast was to put it on FITE. So that kind of put the kibosh on that, so there is no stage show.” Thompson said.
