WGP – Brazil is on fire!

Brazil keep their way to 9th title in World Grand Prix. This time defeated team was Italy, with result 3-0 what “Canarinhas” did also in previous matches. It seems that team coached by Ze Roberto can get a title, but they will play with tough opponents: Serbia (tomorrow) and China (on Sunday).

BRAZIL – ITALY 3-0 (25-16 26-24 25-11)
Line-ups and scores:
Brazil: Dani Lins (3), Gabriela (12), Fabiana (3), Sheilla (8), Fe Garay (13), Thaisa (16), Fabi (L) and Monique (1), Claudia, Michelle (1), Adenizia (3), Priscila (1)
Italy: Signorile (1), Sorokaite (9), Folie (4), Diouf (13), C. Bosetti (3), Guiggi (7), Gennari (L) and Fiorin, Barcellini (5), Camera

Brazil eased to an 8-4 lead at the first technical timeout with a couple of good shots from Gabriela Guimaraes and a nice block from captain Fabiana Claudino on the big-hitting Indre Sorokaite. Fernanda Rodrigues and Sheilla Castro helped Brazil’s score along in the second phase and the Olympic champions were 16-8 ahead at the second TTO. Thaisa Menezes blocked Valentina Diouf and sent a cross-court shot zinging through the Italian defence to bring up setpoint at 24-14 and she then ended the set at 25-16 with a kill.

It wasn’t quite so easy in the second set. Early Brazil spiking errors allowed Italy to take a slight lead before Guimaraes delivered a thunderbolt to even the scores at 3-3. Thaisa served successive aces as Brazil moved into a 7-4 lead, but Diouf slugged Italy back into the match and it remained tight to 15-15 when Italy opened up a three-point gap. Brazil coach Ze Roberto called a timeout and Brazil fought back to 20-20 when Italian coach Marco Mencarelli called his players off court. A cracking drive by Cristina Barcellini earned Italy setpoint at 24-23 but then she blew her serve. A Sheilla Castro service point gave Brazil a chance of taking the set and Diouf obliged by sending a spike long.

The Italians didn’t help their cause with some sloppy play early in the third set, sending shots long or into the net, and Brazil cruised to an 8-3 lead at the first TTO. A service ace by Guimaraes and a block by Rodrigues on Sorokaite extended that to 10-3 and the margin was 10 points at the second TTO after a lucky serve by Danielle Lins. Brazil followed up with three straight blocks and now it was all one-way traffic.

Another exciting thriller was delivered by players in pool A of the Women’s EuroVolley. The hosts of Germany overcame the Netherlands after five sets game in front of 6,500 thousands local fans in Halle. “Oranjes” were held down despite brilliant attitude of Ane Buijs. Second meeting of the day brought not as many as experiences like the previous Saturday’s match. Turkey sorted Spain out in three straights sets.

Germany – The Netherlands 3 – 2 (27-25, 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-9)

It seemed that he found the right words, the German Team eliminated the leadership at 14-14. Margareta Kozuch and Christiane Fürst set the pace with strong attacks and blocks during this time. From now the enthusiastic fans saw an balanced duel on a high level which was decided by two blocks from Christiane Fürst in the tie-break of the first set (27-25).

In the second set the Netherlands call the shots again (4-1), before the German Team responded with a solid attack and a Christine Fürst in a genial mood. Germany went up to 16-14. However the guest from near the border finished the set with a five points lead (25-20).

In the third set Guidetti tried to changed his team on two important positions. Wing Spiker Saksia Hippe and Setter Denise Hanke should get their Chance for Margareta Kozuch and Kathleen Weiß to call out a new spirit in a nervous team. But the situation didn´t became better. The Netherlands dictated the pace of the game with an early 8-5 lead. The hosts could not compensate their bad performance at the beginning and have to accept their defeat. For the Netherlands Captain Maret Grothues convinced with 67% successful attacks (25-22).

Germany started very motivated in the fourth set but the score remained very close until the final phase of the set (21-20), but it were the Germans which did not relinquish the lead up to the end of the game (25-23). In the tie break, Germany went up to 11-9 . After that it was Denise Hanke who made the difference and decided the game with three aces in a row. For Team Germany Christiane Fürst played an immense role and was the top scorer of the game with 23 points. On the other side Anne Buijs performed very well with 22 points.

NU volleyball: Huskers sweep No. 12 Purdue

Everything was going right for the Nebraska Volleyball team in its sweep of No. 12 Purdue on Wednesday night that coach John Cook thinks the Huskers have an ESPN ”Sports Centre” play of the night, despite there being a lot of luck involved in their eventual win.

The lucky moment came in the third set, Nebraska won a rally in which Purdue’s serve caromed off the top of the net, onto the back of Kelsey Fien’s head before bouncing off the KNEE of a diving Kadie Rolfzen. This led to Mary Pollmiller being able to punch the ball over the net, eventually leading to Nebraska winning the rally and taking them to a 15-13 lead!

Some times it’s your night, other times it someone else’s and tonight was Nebraska’s Night.

The play came in 7th on the nightly top 10 list and the athletic department made sure that it got the deserved attention by the ESPN Officials. Dubbed “A one-in-a-million” by Coach Cook, he went on to say “It’s better than some of the hockey goals we have to watch in the top 10.” Probably a quote showing his passion for his team and his sport.

8,045 fans saw the close Nebraskan Victory, eventually finishing in 3 sets at 25-21, 25-22, 25-20, there was only 13 points, total, between one team of the other. With each and every play coming into its own as a match defining point.

The win has allowed Nebraska to move into a tie breaker situation with Purdue for fourth place in the Big Ten Standings, with Nebraska being able to continue building their momentum with four-match home stand!

I don’t mean to make it sound like a resounding victory for Huskers, in fact Purdue made it difficult for the eventual leaders early. Their 6-foot-4 hitter and Big Ten kill leader Annie Drews made it very difficult for the Huskers early but was eventually overcome by the team’s training and preparation for the Big Hitter earlier that week. The reason she is so difficult to compensate for is because as a lefty her hits come in from a different angle to what the team is used to across the board.

A final word from the Huskers Coach, “This is the best effort of the year of our players following a game plan and staying with what we trained,” We all wish Huskers the best of luck in their future ventures, and will keep you updated on the Big Tens games and performances!

Women’s sport needs further attention

We have a long way ahead of us for women’s sport

“Approach of the sport ministry is providing more conditions for development women to witness more progress in the future at women’s sport. Considering the importance of women’s sports and advance challenges on it for several years are in circle of attention in our country, for all authorities who have given their service for sport this matter had got more importance. Efforts of all were for doing suitable works for progress of this sector. By noting to the special situations for the sake of cultural values of the country, sport of women is in need of more attentions. Fortunately after the victory of the Islamic Revelation this matter has taken place and we are witnessing that this matter in this section has got a great deal of attention.” Said vice minster.

He continued: “The existence trend shows that we have achieved valuable results. Though we have a long way in front of us, all of us should continue our efforts. Major section of Iran’s society belongs to the women. Their health could be assurance to health of the whole society.”

I hope the media and all officials support the development of women's sports that can be achieved by taking more steps, and this partnership will provide better solutions for the advancement of women's sport .Presence of the Iranian women in the international sport fields by protecting of values and cultural aspects turned our count to one of the pioneer countries. Valuable successes have come to our women. After presence of women in Asian Games of Hiroshima, Japan this section came to more attention. Even The supreme Leader has emphasized to development of these activities and strong presence of sport- women in international fields. Fortunately the president of Iran also emphasizes for creating the equal opportunities for sport of women. In this base the government and Ministry of Sport and youth consider the expansion of women sport as their duty in two measures of public and athletics. “

Also in Paralympics games of Asia we had notable presence and our women athlete was introduced as the successful sport women of Asia. “
Regarding the approach of the sport and Youth ministry he stipulated that “the ministry is struggling to create a situation in structural dimensions to resolve the obstacles for women. The ministry tries to provide suitable sport halls for easy running of women’s sport activates .At the verge of sixth plan of expansion, this approach is probable that the sport matter of women and its progress in this sixth plan of five year terms to get more attention.”

The president of the Seminar went on: “with some obstacles which are present in the women’s sport, we are witnesses that all are doing their best for removing these obstacles.
