World deaf beach volleyball championships in Turkey

We will have our first world championships in beach volleyball! The event gives elite deaf beach volleyball athletes from around the world an opportunity to compete against each other on the beach by the Mediterranean Sea in Alanya“, says Turkey. Terry Goldschmitz Jr.

I am Terry Goldschmitz, Jr, from Minnesota. I played with 2011 USA National Deaf Men Volleyball team (indoors) last year which it was my first experience and I had the privilege of representing my country for the first time. The feeling was incredible, met players from another countries, experiencing their culture, their sign language weren’t similiar to ours which was sweet I’ve played volleyball indoors and beach all my life. Now I’m 38 years old, this may be my final chance of representing my country at (2on2) Deaf Beach World Championship as a beach player for the first time and I want this to be memorial, my children to look up to their dad who’s an athlete and also a daddy. To be a role model to every deaf children around the world .

The year 2012 is certainly a busy year for the Turkish Deaf Sports Federation(TDSF) EDSO basketball championships (June), ICSD world football championships (July), and ICSD world beach volleyball championships (September). Less than a year ago, the ICSD congress granted Turkey the rights to host the 2017 Summer Deaflympics. Hosting several international events this year gives Turkey an opportunity to gain experience and publicity it needs to prepare for the Summer Deaflympics in Ankara five years from now.

CHL: Quick games in pool G

Cueno became a single leader of this group by winning with Asseco Resovia 3:0. Italian team came to Rzeszow very determined. Fans in Poland was expecting a great game, but Resovia has not been doing very well lately, so everyone knew it was going to be very difficult.

Reality turned out to be very good for Cuneo. They showed some incredible skills on the service (9 points with aces, while Resovia only 1). Both teams started rather aggressive on the wings, but only Italians managed to keep it going through the whole part. In Resovia Rzeszow only Zbigniew Bartman could catch up with his rival Tsvetan Sokolov . They scored 17 points each. In the end all that matters was service of Cuneo and mistakes of Resovia. With that kind of a picture, the result could be only one and Italian team is now a leader of pool G.

“The biggest difference was in service. In other elements, especially in attack, we shouldn’t be ashamed of our performance. We can regret that we lost our advantage in the second set in which we had a big chance to level the score in sets. Obviously we have to work a lot to improve our play” stressed Andrzej Kowal, mentor of the local team.

“I agree that the service was the key to our success here in Rzeszow. Nevertheless, Asseco Resovia is a very strong team and we have to prepare well also for the return game in Italy” concluded Roberto Piazza, head coach of Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo

Asseco Resovia Rzeszow – Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo 0:3 (18:25, 23:25, 20:25)

On the other hand, Arago de Sete scored their historical first victory with Remat Zalau.
After losing to Asseco Resovia Rzeszow and Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo, this time Arago de Sete needed a win. However, Sete is currently damaged by injuries, so they had to do twice that good job. French team did especially well in block – 15 points from this element in only 3 sets. In addition, they were highly supported by Baptiste Geiler (16 points). On the other side, Remat Zalau responded with Serban Pascan and Silmar De Almeida, but it was not enough. Arago de Sete was slightly better every time in the end of every part. The return match is scheduled for next week in Romania and Arago will try to back up its third place in the standings.

Arago de Sete – Remat Zalau 3:0 (25:19, 25:19, 25:22)

Kim Yeon-Koung Negotiation Problems

The negotiations surrounding the status of Kim Yeon-koung (25) who is playing in the Turkish women’s volleyball league and pro volleyball club Heungkuk Life(HKL) has fallen through.

HKL revealed on the 22nd, “We offered ‘two years abroad and returning to Korea after’ to Kim but she refuse this, and lastly offered even ‘complete transfer’ but Fenerbahce club denied on the basis of not suitable transfer fee.

HKL’s General Manager Kwon personally sent to Turkey on the 18th and tried to negotiate with Kim but was not able to bring the interests closer.

HKL explained that Fenerbahce expressed in Europe there is no Posting practice like that of Korea, refusing the transfer fee for complete transfer, standing firm of ‘around 5-7% of the salary’ resulting in a non agreement.

It’s been said HKL put up 1 billion won (~ 1 million dollars) as the transfer fee. July of last year, Kim signed a contract for 2 years with a salary of 1.5 billion won (~1.4 million dollars).

On the 8th of this month, Kim sent an email to HKL, KVA and KOVO expressing “the original contract with Fenerbahce needs to be honored” and “I want to continue playing as an international FA.”

After that on the 16th, she requested “The transfer agreement with HKL needs to be written with basis that the existing contract with Fenerbahce will be maintained and will terminate June 10th of this year.”

The ‘negotiation on the edge’ between HKL and Kim was not able to be resolved and with that the agreement made by the government and the Sports associates back in October that allowed Kim to go abroad may also be in danger of becoming annulled.

Kim and HKL have been in conflict regarding the athlete’s foreign transfer after the London Olympics.

Kim’s stance of wanting to play in a bigger stage and the club’s stance of not recognizing an athlete without FA status putting forward an agent to independently sign with a foreign club has run a parallel.

This problem was talked about even in the parliamentary inspection, showing signs of turning political, the government and the Sports associates opened the way for Kim to play in Turkey in October 22nd of last year.

The ITC would be issued right away, but there was a condition that within 3 months Kim will sign a transfer contract with Fenerbahce under HKL and the FA regulation would be modified.

Afterwards, Kim went to Turkey directly and started being active, but until the time limit was almost over, the negotiation did not progress at all.

And because of this HKL’s General Manager went to Turkey personally to attempt to resolve for the last time but fell through.

The second clause of the decision from three months ago was not met.

Kim will be in limbo, not an FA nor a transfer under HKL, and it is unclear whether she will be able to play in the future.

KVA sent an official document to Kim and HKL on the basis of the committee meeting from October of last year making firm that “the above result is not a mediated settlement but rather a decision” and that “if Kim does not agree to this they will not issue 2013-2014 season’s ITC.”

Furthermore, KVA has not consented to a replacement ITC stating her as a player of HKL, so there is possibility that this season’s activities may be on halt.

However, regarding the decision made in October, Kim’s agent Yoon of InspoKorea refuted “At the time of the meeting, the decision was made without the athlete even being present, but Kim agreed.” and that “the notion that she is not trying to negotiate with HKL is trying to blame Kim for the fall through.”

He posed a question, “In the decision, it’s noted ‘if Kim does not agree’ the ITC will not be issued, but who will take responsibility when HKL does not agree?”

Kim, in the email mentioned above, requested that “if HKL’s irrational offers are the reason the negotiation cannot happen in the time limit, KVA should take this into consideration and make sure there is no damage.” but it is unknown whether this will be accepted.

Finally, during KOVO’s committee meeting on the 18th, women’s regulation was not resolved during the FA regulation revision discussions, so this will very likely be unfinished as well.

HKL expressed, “It is regretful that Kim would ignore the decision from an institution that has public credibility and rely on the politicians to satisfy her wishes, wanting special treatment with a ‘persistence will pay off’ attitude” and that “to find a resolution, we will work with the affiliate institutions.”

Champions League: Zaksa in Final Four!

Without golden set, Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle managed to beat Arkas Izmir and secure their tickets to Final Four 2013.

The beginning of the game was equal, but a little bit nervous. Zaksa gained a little leverage on the first TTO (8:6) and enlarged it right after. Arkas improved efficiency, blocked Fonteles and got closer to Zaksa. However, the guests took back their lead on the second TTO and after that, Fonteles scored one point with service and failed during another try. João Paulo Bravo replaced Gordon Perrin. Liberman Agamez scored an impressive series of three aces. For a moment it was dangerous for Zaksa, but with help of Gladyr and Rouzier they won the first set 25:23.

Bravo stayed in the team for the second set, but he had problems with his attack. On the other hand, Agamez was very effective. Izmir also had good defense, but Zaksa was leading again on the first TTO. Zagumny blocked Subasi, but Agamez made a tie and Subasi score one point that gave his team a lead on the second TTO. Izmir had a good service and attack, but Rouzier also had a great day. After an ace by Fonteles and a mistake of the hosts, Zaksa was happy to end this part of the game 25:21.

Arkas Izmir started better during another part (5:3) and Castellani took a break. Zaksa won long action and arbiter made a mistake and gave unearned point to Izmir. Agamez let his team to drive away (10:6), but a good service from Gladyr and Fonteles reduced that distance. However, the hosts felt the opportunity there and after blocking Michal Ruciak they gave themselves some more hope for the Champions League finals.

Zaksa had to regroup themselves to win this, so they began with a hard strike (5:3). Perrin got one point and Rouzier brought the first TTO with the result 4:8.Fonteles blocked by three opponents. Kedzierzyn was keeping the distance, despite of a difficult situation and good game of a Turkish team. Fonteles rebuilt the lead. Agamez failed on the wing and it was 13:16 during the second TTO. Perrin was blocked and Zaksa got 20th point. After that, guest had an incredible series of blocks and they won this whole game 3:1 and advanced to Final Four 2013.

Arkas Izmir – ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle 1:3  (23:25, 21:25, 25:21, 19:25)

Raphael Redwitz: Je suis francais

Raphael Redwitz may say such a sentence from today. The setter, who was born in Curitiba (Brazil), just received a French citizenship and dreams to wear a blue national team t-shirt.

“I am very happy that received a
French passport. I am already officially volleyball player of France . Thank you all for your help. Thanks all for your help. Now, my biggest dream is to play in ‘’Les bleues’’ National Team”; Raphael wrote on his facebook account.

Raphael Redwitz has lived in France for four years playing in Andora TX, Arago de Sete, Paris Volley, and Tours VB.During his stay by the Seine, Redwitz has met his wife-to-be whom he married two years ago.

Moreover, he played in Italy (Yoga Forli), Poland (Resovia Rzeszow), and obviously in Brazil. “Rafa” spent the last season in Russian Superleague, however, he has been terminated already in January due to a lack of spacein the Iskra’s composition caused by being a foreigner.

The club future of the brand new French is not known yet but it is said that he might settle down in Poland again.

Raphael Reditz may be a tremendous support for France’s National Team and maybe he will be appeared there already in the upcoming World League cruise.

WL: Final 6 without Russia? It is possible!

Germany overcame Russia after exciting five sets match in Frankfurt and may deprive “Sborna’’ Finals participation. As Russia has already finished its competition in Pool B and Germany still has two games remaining against Iran next weekend, so if only Vital Heynen’s wards collect 6 points in Teheran, they will fly to Argentina at the expense of Russia. The first spot ,so far, is reserved for Italy despite Azzurri lost 4 points playing against Serbia.

Germany – Russia 3 – 2 (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 18-16)

Germany: Kampa 3, Kaliberda 24, Bohme 12, Schops 17, Froom 17, Collin 6, Tille (L) and Hisch, M. Steuerwald, Broshog, P. Steuerwald
Russia: Makarov, Sivozhelez 6, Apalikov 8, Pavlov 22, Spiridonov 21, Muserskiy 16, Verbov (L) and Grankin 1, Zhilin 11

It was a tight game the 3,200 spectators saw in the first set. Both teams played at an equal level in the early phase as they tied (7-7). However, the German players were better in response to the ball and took a three point lead (21-18) in crunch time. For the Germans it was the key to success. The Russian Team wasn’t able to catch the advantage and lost the first set. Lukas Kampa decided the set with a block (25-21).

In the second set, Russia started strong and claimed a 8-7 advantage until the first time out. However, Germany wasn’t impressed and fought back, as Denis Kaliberda scored five points in the second heat. Russia had no response, so the German team seized the second set (21-19), to get ahead 2-0.

The score matched Friday’s after the second set, in the third set, the Russians moved to the front with a brilliant start (9-2) and increased their performance. They pressured the host with strong attacks and their serve. Germany could not compensate the disastrous opening, allowing Russia to secure the win (25-18).

Russia became better in block and attack, and the German players offered problems in the defense (16-12). A four-point run (16-16) couldn’t prevent the equalizer (25-23). In the tiebreak, both teams tried to set the killing shot. It was Denis Kaliberda who cared a two-point advantage (7-5). However, Germany wrapped it up to 18-16 and finished a dramatic set after three failed match balls.

For Germany, Denis Kaliberda was top-scorer of the game with 23 points. On the Russian side, Nikolay Pavlov scored 22 times.

Serbia – Italy 3 – 1 (28-26, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19)

Serbia: Jovovic 2, U. Kovacevic 15, Rosic 13, Starovic 18, Petric 13, Podrascanin 1, Rosic (L) and Atanasijevic 3, Stankovic 6
Italy: Travica 4, Parodi 11, Birarelli 10, Zaytsev 19, Savani 14, Beretta 2, Giovi (L) and Piano 5, Vettori 3, Rossini

Despite their win, Serbia is officially out of the FIVB World League finals, allowing coach Kolakovic to shuffle the squad a little bit. Sasa Starovic got the chance to play instead of Atanasijevic on the opposite side, Petric got introduced to change a weary Nikola Kovacevic, and young Nikola Jovovic substituted the experienced Vlado Petkovic on the setter position.

Early in the first set, Italy earned a 3-point advantage, but after the first technical break Serbia managed to tie the result at 9-9. However, Italy wouldn`t let go and immediately got back in front by 2 points (11-9). By the second technical break a 3-point lead was restored and Italy went to the pause leading 16-13. At 18-16 to Italy, Aleksandar Atanasijevic, the best scorer of the competition, got back into the game, and help Serbia reach the tie at 19-19 lifting the team’s spirit with couple of good serves and forcing coach Berruto to ask for a break. After an exciting finish, Serbian youngsters prevailed and concluded the set at 28-26 with a powerful killing block by Milan Rasic and Uros Kovacevic.

Italy came back with a vengeance in the beginning of the second set taking an early 8-2 lead. Serbia recuperated several points after the break on Stankovic’s serve to reach 3 points of deficit at 5-8, but Italy wouldn`t let this one slip away. They restored a 6-point lead at 12-6 and routinely wrapped up the set at 25-17 to tie the match 1-1.

Italy started the third set better, taking an early 3-1 lead, but Serbia soon regained momentum and turned the score in their favour at 6-4. However, it was Italy leading 8-7 at the first technical break. An exciting battle was seen through the second technical time-out and neither of the teams could gain some tangible advantage. Italy managed to augment the lead to 2 points of advantage after the break (21-19), but Serbia with Jovovic behind the service line managed to turn the score around and get in front at 23-22. Coach Berruto’s time-out helped Italy tie the score, but it was Serbia who reached the first set point and convert it with a powerful serve of Aleksandar Atanasijevic for 25-23 and 2:1 in sets for the home side.

It was an even match in the beginning of the fourth set, but after 3-3 on the scoreboard, Serbia stormed to the first technical break with 5 consecutive points (8-3). After the second technical time-out Serbia managed to preserve the lead, which was reduced just by one point (16-12). Italy tried with a final push after the break reducing the gap to just 2 points at 14-16, but Serbia immediately answered with two consecutive points of their own to restore a 4-point lead at 18-14. Italy fought back once again at 16-20 winning 2 points in a row (18-20) and forcing coach Kolakovic to ask for a time-out. Serbia reacted well and went up 21-18. Atanasijevic’s ace made it 22-18, and the final outcome was already in sight. Coach Berruto tried to turn the game around with a time-out, but Italy could not find strength to push once again.

Georgi Bratoev got married!

The setter of the Bulgarian national team- Georgi Bratoev just got married! Bratoev married his long-time girlfriend Plamena Peeva on a stylish ceremony, which was held in the capital of Bulgaria- Sofia, on Saturday.

The two in love firstly married in the chursh “St. Georgi” in the centre of the city.

Let us remind you that Georgi was chosen for best setter in FIVB World League 2012 and in the Olympics 2012. After receiving the first prize, Bratoev decided to make a proposal to Plamena. No surprises, she said yes. Because of all the competitions that Georgi has to take part in, Plamena had to organize the wedding all be herself. Ane she did it in an excellent way :)) Now that the Bulgarians have their two-weeks- rest between FIVB World League 2013 and their preparation for 2013 European Championship the couple decided to have the ceremony now.
The party after the official ceremony was held in a restaurant complex in Sofia. The 26 years old Bratoev chosed for his godgather his old friend – Ivo Damyanov, who Georgi played in Slavia Sofia with.
Almost all the players of the Bulgarian national team attended to the ceremony in the restaurant. One of the biggest world volleyball stars – Matey Kaziyski came especially for the ceremony in the church. And he was in the company of beautiful young lady.
Georgi and Plamena have 10 days for their honey moon, which they will spend in Dubai, OAE. The excursion to the exotic destination was a special gift from the Vice President of Bulgarian Volleyball Federation- Liubo Ganev.
But how did the love story between Georgi and Plamena start ?

Georgi and Plamena are together for many years and their story shows us that sometimes unexpected meetings could bring us to the most important things in life. Both met when Georgi was player of Slavia Sofia and Plamena was just a fan, supporting the team. From that moment on both are together, sharing ups and downs. Plamena was with Georgi by the time of his first work abroad- in 2010 in Tyumen, Russia.

The beautiful Plamena seems to be disappearing in the arms of Bratoev. She is a hearty girl and everytime she travels for the visits of the national team, she is always there – on the tribunes, cheering up.
The young couple still don’t have a personal home- they both live with the parents of Plamena.
We wish them many happy moments :))
