COVID-19 Pandemic Not Deterring SJU Wrestler From a Career in Medicine

By Frank Rajkowski, SJU Writer/Video Producer

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – It’s an incredibly stressful time in the medical profession, especially for those on the front lines of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

And because that’s the profession Saint John’s University senior Jerod Novak will soon be entering, he’s doing all he can to stay up-to-date on the latest information.

“For me, as a student-nurse, it’s a time to be doing a lot of research,” said the senior nursing major, who wrapped up a four-year wrestling career for the Johnnies with a sixth-place finish at 157 pounds Feb. 28-29 at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional.

“I already feel like I have a responsibility to be well-informed and to be able to tell people what’s true and what’s not, what’s exaggerated and what isn’t. This is a public health matter first and foremost, and people need to have accurate information.”

Novak, an Aitkin High School graduate who finished his college wrestling career with a 64-43 record, has been drawn to the nursing profession since he was a child – thanks in part to his own medical experiences.

Jerod Novak

“It really began when I was 4,” he recalls. “I had Kawasaki disease (a condition that causes inflammation in the walls of some of the body’s blood vessels) and I was hospitalized for a week. Then I had surgery my ninth-grade year (in high school) and one the year after. And another one last year. I had a lot of great people taking care of me and I wanted to get into that realm myself.

“In fact, I’ve gone on to be able to shadow a couple of the nurses who had taken care of me. I’ve been able to see firsthand how they go about doing their jobs.”

Novak, a three-time National Wrestling Coaches Association All-America Scholar, also spent most of last November in South Africa, volunteering for a group called African Impact – an experience meant to immerse participants in a different culture as they learn how to adjust and provide the best possible medical care.

He was part of a group helping at two clinics serving three Zulu communities near St. Lucia.

“They were the only two clinics serving a population of 70,000 people,” Novak said. “People walked everywhere. There were no cars. So part of what we did was just help people with transportation. And we also worked to help them with their medical needs.

“It was a unique experience and it provided me with a lot of experience when it comes to empathizing and understanding patients from cultures different than my own. The biggest thing that struck me was that these were people with so little and yet they were three times happier than we are here. It taught me a lot about the importance of making the most of the life you have.”

Novak said that experience will serve him well as he goes on with his own career in medicine.

“We’re becoming a very diverse patient population and it will only continue to get more diverse in the years to come,” he said, “so having the experience I got there will be so important.”

Novak also said the experience he got being a member of the wrestling team at Saint John’s the past four years provided him with experience and skills that will translate far beyond the mat.

“I had a great career here,” he said. “I know I could have done more, but I came to Saint John’s to wrestle and get a great education. And my education has always come first and foremost. But the experiences I’ve had, and the people I’ve met through wrestling, will always stick with me.

“I’ll always look back on the unbelievable camaraderie we had on this team. This was a great bunch of guys. If I get married someday, these guys are going to be in my wedding. That’s how close-knit a group we are.”

Johnnie head coach Kevin Schiltz said Novak was a key ingredient in that group’s makeup.

“Jerod was a great competitor on the mat and in the classroom,” Schiltz said. “His presence in the lineup will be hard to replace. He will be a great asset to any nursing department. I have no doubt he will be at the top when it comes to his future career, just as he did in so many ways at Saint John’s.”

Nursing is now his future. And though these are anxious times in the medical profession, and for society in general, he said the COVID-19 pandemic has not made him question his future career path in the slightest.

“That’s exactly why I’m going into (nursing) – to help people,” he said. “I’m not scared. I’m not worried. I’m worried for members of my family. But that just makes me want to do this even more.

“We all have a desire to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. And that’s what I have the chance to do.”

TORONTO — Starbucks is pulling back on its presence in Canada with plans to close up to 200 coffee shops.

The company outlined a number of broad changes it was introducing as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving consumer habits.

Starbucks says some of the Canadian stores up for closure will be “repositioned,” which suggests they could either move to a new area or change format.

The company has been experimenting with locations that are pick-up only coffee shops. The first Canadian location using the new format launched in January in Toronto.

Most Regions Outside Toronto-Hamilton Area Moving To Stage 2 Of Reopening

TORONTO — Most Ontario regions outside the Toronto area will be allowed to open more businesses and activities Friday, including restaurant patios, hair salons and swimming pools as the province takes a regional approach to reopening.

But provincewide on Friday, the limit on social gatherings will increase from five to 10, while the government says people must still stay two metres away from anyone outside their own household.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said officials have floated the idea of “bubbling,” which would let people in two households be in close contact with each other, but the chief medical officer of health doesn’t feel Ontario is ready for that yet.

Watch: When you’re allowed to “double” your home bubble, hugs immediately follow. Story continues below.

Dr. David Williams said he is “strongly looking at how to go forward with that” and hopes to have news that would apply provincewide later this week.

As well, across Ontario on Friday, all places of worship can reopen as long as attendance is limited to 30 per cent of the building’s capacity and physical distancing measures are in place.

Otherwise, current restrictions will stay in place for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, which has a high concentration of the province’s COVID-19 cases, border regions such as Windsor-Essex, Lambton County and Niagara and Haldimand-Norfolk, which has seen an outbreak among migrant workers.

“For the regions that must wait a little longer, I ask you: please remain patient,” Premier Doug Ford said. “We will get there soon.”

For all other areas, Stage 2 on Friday will see restaurants and bars allowed to open patios and other outdoor dining.

The province also announced Monday it will let licensed establishments set up a new patio or expand an existing one without requiring an application or fee.

Tours will be allowed to resume, such as biking, walking, bus and boat tours, along with tastings and tours at wineries, breweries and distilleries.

Some outdoor activities can reopen, such as paintball, mini golf, and go-cart tracks, training for outdoor team sports, camping at private campgrounds, beach access and additional camping at Ontario Parks, splash pads and wading pools, and all swimming pools. Playgrounds won’t be open until stage three.

Ford said that people in Stage 1 regions could travel to Stage 2 regions for activities such as camping, but a spokeswoman for Finance Minister Rod Phillips sent a statement shortly after, suggesting the opposite.

“The government urges caution regarding unnecessary travel, especially from higher transmission areas (regions in Stage 1) to lower transmission areas (regions in Stage 2),” Emily Hogeveen wrote.

“In general, people should preferentially stay home and not travel recognizing that there may be limited, essential reasons to do so.”

Tattoo parlours, barber shops, hair salons and beauty salons will be allowed to reopen with health and safety measures in place, but not for services for someone’s face such as facials, eyebrow grooming and makeup. Steam rooms, saunas and baths must stay closed.

Ford said he would announce a plan Tuesday to reopen child care centres to support parents returning to work.

Stores in malls can reopen, as can photography studios and film and television production with physical distancing protocols, and museums, galleries and zoos can reopen while limiting the number of visitors through measures such as timed entry.

The government is promising to update the public at the beginning of each week on its assessment of whether those regions would be ready to move to Stage 2 by the end of that week.

Elliott said officials are still looking for numbers of new cases to drop, and hospital capacity to continue to increase.

Ontario reported 243 new COVID-19 cases Monday, and 24 more deaths. That brings the province to a total of 30,860 cases — an increase of 0.8 per cent over the previous day, which is the lowest growth rate since early March.

The total includes 2,450 deaths and 24,492 cases that have been resolved.

Hospitalizations are decreasing

Ontario also reported another drop in the number of people in hospital — from 635 to 603 — a trend over the past several days. One week ago there were about 800 people in hospital with COVID-19 and at the end of last month it was around 900.

The number of people on ventilators also dropped from 92 to 81, though the number of people in intensive care rose slightly.

Associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe said overall the numbers are encouraging. The new case numbers are some of the lowest recorded in a long time, hospitalizations are decreasing steadily, and while testing levels have been ramped up, new case numbers have not risen with them, she said.

Ontario’s document laying out Stage 2 details also revealed more about what will be allowed in an eventual Stage 3, including restaurants and bars for dine-in services, performing arts shows and cinemas with limited seating capacity, casinos, gyms, and amusement parks.

Even in Stage 3, the government will recommend remote work continue wherever possible.

Click Here: liverpool mens jersey

Ferrari’s Binotto: COVID-19 impact led to Vettel split

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto says the impact on F1 of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the Scuderia’s change of vision for 2021 and subsequently to Sebastian Vettel’s departure.

Ferrari and Vettel unexpectedly announced a parting of the ways at the end of this season, with many believing the split was rooted in the financial terms and length of the contract submitted by the Italian outfit to the four-time world champion.

But Binotto says the broad changes swiftly decided by F1 amid the current crisis and economic downturn were the key factors that governed Ferrari’s vision for the future.

“Ferrari loves Sebastian as a driver and as a person, he is part of our team, our project, so it is never an easy decision,” Binotto told Spain’s Marca.

“Seb was our first option and then the COVID-19 arrived, a situation that has changed many things, from the regulation to the budget ceiling, things that have changed the vision of the situation, looking ahead as with the new car, postponed to 2022.

“Internal reviews had to be done, difficult, and that’s what we did.

“It is not true [that Vettel left because of a short-term deal]. It is simply that things have changed and we are looking at a new cycle, and it seems that this vision, in terms of timing, did not coincide with his vision. It was not because of the type of offer or its duration.”

Wolff: Interest in Vettel justified by risk of ‘black swan’ event

Vettel’s plans for 2021 are unclear, but options for the German to race on in 2021 exits at Renault and… Mercedes.

Binotto hopes his future ex-driver remains in the sport, and the Swiss engineer would be perfectly happy to see him join the championship-winning Silver Arrows squad, where Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have yet to sign new deals for 2021.

“It would be a loss [if he retired], because we love and appreciate him, and it would be important for him to find a good seat next year,” said the Scuderia chief.

“I hear rumours that you can find him in Mercedes and I would be very happy for him, I really would be.”
