'Bruno Fernandes is a winner' – Man Utd boss Solskjaer delighted with €55m signing's impact

Along with supplying goals and assists, the midfielder has made his presence felt at Old Trafford since his January arrival

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised the leadership qualities of Bruno Fernandes as the midfielder prepares for his first taste of the Manchester derby.

Manchester United host rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday buoyed by a nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Portugal international Fernandes has been key to this resurgence, supplying two goals and as many assists in four Premier League outings since moving for an initial €55 million (£48m/$61m) from Sporting CP in January.

More teams

The 25-year-old arrived with an established reputation for prolific goalscoring from midfield and Solskjaer believes the continuation of this form speaks well of the player’s character.

“I like to see that in a player, he doesn’t change coming into a new team. He’s the same as he was at Sporting,” he said.

“That’s a boy with confidence, with quality, good form and that’s his personality. Everyone should be themselves.

“He’s come in as a leader and he’s shown he’s a leader. He’s a winner. He doesn’t take 99 per cent as good enough.”

United have beaten their neighbours twice at the Etihad Stadium this season, claiming an authoritative 2-1 Premier League triumph in December before eking out a 1-0 EFL Cup win a month later.

That was not enough to progress to the final of a competition City won for a third consecutive season last weekend, however, given Pep Guardiola’s men ran out 3-1 semi-final first-leg winners to extend an excellent recent record at Old Trafford.

In pursuit of his club’s first top-flight derby win on home soil for almost five years, Solskjaer will hope to have captain Harry Maguire available alongside right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and winger Daniel James.

Maguire sat out Thursday’s 3-0 FA Cup fifth-round victory at Derby County after rolling his ankle in training, while Wan-Bissaka injured his back in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Everton that James missed with an unspecified knock.

“I hope [they will be fit] but none of them have been training yet since the last game. We’ve got to look at them on Saturday because Friday is a recovery day,” Solskjaer explained.

On Maguire, he added: “It’s touch and go because he rolled and twisted his ankle. Hopefully he’ll recover quickly. I hope he’ll be fit, yeah.”

Abraham airs injury return plan as Chelsea & England wait on 15-goal striker

The Blues frontman claims to be closing in on full fitness having nursed a niggling ankle problem and intends to grace the Three Lions shirt in March

Tammy Abraham claims to be “almost fit”, as Chelsea wait on his return to action, with the 22-year-old striker confident that he will soon be ready for club and country.

Having netted 15 times in a bright start to the 2019-20 campaign, the Stamford Bridge academy graduate has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

A niggling ankle complaint has prevented Abraham from maintaining the standards he set after being entrusted with the responsibility of leading the line for Frank Lampard’s Blues.

A problem first picked up during a 2-2 draw with Arsenal in January has continued to flare up and leave the highly-rated frontman with a joint that looks like a “swollen ball”.

Chelsea sent Abraham for tests in Barcelona as they sought to get to the bottom of the ailment and were relieved to hear that no surgery is required.

With the youngster now working his way back into contention, it is expected that he will come into contention for domestic minutes over the coming weeks and push for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for friendly dates with Italy and Denmark.

Abraham told the Evening Standard when asked if he expects to be fit enough to figure for his country: “Yes, definitely. I’m almost fit. There’s still a bit to do. I’ll get there soon.

“It’s a recurrence. [The problem was] playing on it and aggravating it even more. It is still like a swollen ball really but it is getting better day by day.

“The club wanted me to go to Barcelona. They just wanted different eyes, a different mindset on this situation. He told me what was wrong, exactly what the Chelsea physios said and he recommended some stuff for me to do. I’m doing physio right now.

“This time, I just said ‘I’ll just come back when I’m 100 per cent’ instead of coming back and going again.”

Abraham is desperate to add to his collection of four senior England caps as a door of opportunity remains open at international level.

Heading towards Euro 2020, the Three Lions are currently without prolific captain Harry Kane and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford – with both men nursing untimely injuries.

The stage is set for somebody to step up in their absence, with Abraham intending to be that man.

He added: “The March internationals could be [a great chance] if it did come into my hands.

“I am ready for it. I have to step up and do what I do best.

“I’ve spoken to Marcus. Harry Kane is someone I’ve always idolised. Hopefully he can be back because he is a player that England definitely need and Marcus as well. They are both great young talents.

“I’ve watched England on TV [at tournaments] and actually going to the Euros would be a dream come true. But first of all, it’s about knuckling down at Chelsea.”

Who will win the FA Cup in 2019-20? The favourites, outsiders, underdogs & latest odds

Manchester City are the holders after brushing aside Watford in last season’s Wembley showpiece, but who will lift the famous trophy this season?

The FA Cup is into the quarter-final stages and only Premier League teams are left in the latest edition of the oldest competition in the country.

Manchester City are the current holders, having beaten Watford 6-0 in last season’s final to lift the trophy for the first time since 2011.

Who are the favourites to win the 2019-20 FA Cup?

Man City are 8/11 (1.73) favourites with bet365 to win the FA Cup for the seventh time in their history.

Click Here: New Zealand rugby store

The Premier League champions eased past League Two side Port Vale in the third round and have had few problems since then, with a trip to Newcastle United awaiting them in the quarter-finals.

It has been over two years since City last lost a game in this tournament and with the league title almost out of reach

Chelsea are next in the betting at 8/1 (9.0) to win the FA Cup, with Frank Lampard’s men also targeting progress in the Champions League.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder won the tournament four times as a player and a trophy in his debut season would certainly endear him even more with the Blues faithful.

Manchester United are also available at 8/1 (9.0) after seeing off Wayne Rooney’s Derby County in the fifth-round.

That victory continued a remarkable run of consistency for the Red Devils, with United having now reached the quarter-finals for the last six seasons.

Who are the underdogs to win the 2019-20 FA Cup?

Arsenal are priced at 9/1 (10.0) to win the FA Cup after edging past Leeds United 1-0 in third round, Bournemouth in the fourth round and Portsmouth in the fifth.

No side has won this competition more than the Gunners, who have lifted it 13 times, with three of those wins coming in the space of four campaigns between 2014 and 2017.

Leicester City are 10/1 (11.0) to follow up their excellent Premier League form by winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

The Foxes host Chelsea in the quarter-finals, and after crashing out in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, Leicester could target the FA Cup trophy to go with a potential Champions League spot.

Who are the outsiders to win the 2019-20 FA Cup?

One of the Premier League surprise packages, Sheffield United are 20/1 (26.0) and could aim for a deep run in the FA Cup to go with their impressive season in the Premier League.

Despite being one of the outsiders, Chris Wilder’s men host Arsenal in the last eight and will be quietly confident of progress considering they beat the Gunners at Bramall Lane earlier on in the season.

It is 33/1 (34.0) that Noriwch City claim cup glory for the first time in their history, having already got to this stage for the first time since 1992.

Finally, Newcastle are available at 40/1 (41.0) to lift the FA Cup after 65 years without a domestic trophy, but they must navigate Man City in the quarter-finals if they are to continue their run.

Starbucks, Second Cup Stop Accepting Reusable Cups Over Coronavirus Fears

Two major coffee chains have stopped serving coffee in reusable cups brought by customers amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Starbucks and The Second Cup Ltd. say they are temporarily halting the environmentally friendly measure, but will continue to honour associated discounts.

“First and foremost, the health and well-being of our partners and customers remains top of mind and our highest priority, and we will continue to act thoughtfully and courageously despite the disruption and uncertainty COVID-19 brings to our daily lives,: wrote Rossann Williams, Starbucks executive vice-president and president of U.S. company-operated business and Canada, in an open letter published on the company’s website Wednesday.

The letter announced a slew of “precautionary steps” the company is taking in response to the outbreak.

That includes pausing personal cup use and serving drinks in in-store mugs. The company will continue to honour a 10-cent discount for customers who bring their cup or ask for a company mug to use in store.

The coffee chain is also ramping up regular cleaning practices across all stores, modifying or postponing large meetings and providing info to employees on how to respond to suspected cases of the virus. It has also restricted business-related air travel through to March 31.

Second Cup also temporarily halted personal cup use as of Thursday, the company said.

The coffee chain will also honour its 20-cent discount for customers who bring a reusable mug.

Second Cup, however, will continue to pour drinks into ceramic mugs for in-store use, the company said in a statement.

“All ceramic mugs are washed in high-pressure sanitizers,” it said, and the company has reminded staff to monitor the machine’s temperature and wash their hands prior to unloading dishes.

Second Cup has taken other measures over the past month, including increasing the number of times its cafes are cleaned each day.

Other coffee purveyors ― McDonald’s Canada, Tim Hortons, Balzac’s Coffee Roasters, Aroma Espresso Bar and Timothy’s World Coffee ― did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s the latest corporate impact from the global spread of COVID-19, which caused global stock markets to fall and has created worries in the Canadian tourism industry.

‘Does Pogba want to stay or go?’ – Ferdinand calls for end to distracting Man Utd transfer saga

The former Red Devils defender is looking for a World Cup-winning midfielder to make it clear where he stands so plans can be drawn up at Old Trafford

Paul Pogba has been urged to make a decision on his Manchester United future, with Rio Ferdinand admitting that a distracting saga is doing the “topsy-turvy” Red Devils few favours.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen an upturn in fortune of late, with his side back in the mix for a top-four finish while also progressing through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and last 16 of the Europa League.

Efforts on the field are, however, being played out against a backdrop of Pogba-related rumours.

The World Cup-winning midfielder, who has been restricted to just eight appearances by injury this season, continues to be heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

Ferdinand wants to see that speculation brought to a close so that definitive plans can be drawn up, with the former defender telling BT Sport: “I think that is a conversation that needs to be happening between Man United and Pogba.

“Does he want to stay or go? Does Ole want to keep him? Once that’s ironed out you can build your team.”

Solskjaer has continued to bolster his ranks in what remains a long-term rebuilding project at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ferdinand concedes that there is no quick fix to be found in Manchester, regardless of what happens with Pogba, with United still very much a work in progress.

He added: “They understood as a group that it wasn’t going to happen overnight. I think this team are turning the corner but it’s a slow process.

“It’s not something we can look at and go right, ‘that’s a big change and Man United are back winning trophies’.

“This is a slow burn, though, after a few years of topsy-turvy times.”

The Red Devils kept themselves in the hunt for more major silverware on Thursday with a 3-0 win over Wayne Rooney’s Derby, with January signing Odion Ighalo adding two more goals to his tally.

Ferdinand is pleased to see the Nigerian frontman making an immediate impact after eyebrows were raised at his deadline-day arrival.

The ex-England international said: “People, and myself included, were probably thinking Odion Ighalo, where does he fit into all of this?

“If you have an opportunity to sign a player at the beginning of the January window, he is not the guy you are going to sign but what he does bring is a point.

“A point where they can focus and play into him from the midfield. He offers the platform to run off. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial want the ball in behind and not to bring people in.”

Canadian Manufacturing Shrugs Off Blockades And Coronavirus, Speeds Up In February

MONTREAL ― The spread of the coronavirus around the world and a wave of railroad blockades across Canada were supposed to have dragged down the country’s economy in February, but early evidence suggests manufacturers are shrugging off the problems ― at least for now.

The IHS Markit Canada Manufacturing PMI ― a measure of factory activity ― jumped to 51.8 in February, from 50.6 in January. Any number above 50 indicates expansion.

“Canadian manufacturers [noted] that greater demand from U.S. clients had helped to offset weaker spending in the Asia-Pacific region,” IHS Markit said in its latest survey, released this week.

Watch: How coronavirus will impact Canada’s economy. Story continues below.

However, it did note that wait times for goods from suppliers saw a large spike in February.

“Worsening vendor performance was attributed to a combination of rail transport blockades and delays with the receipt of items sourced from suppliers in China,” the research agency said.

The manufacturing report came the same week the Bank of Canada (BoC) announced a large interest rate cut in response to a slowing economy around the world.

Many experts note an interest rate cut can’t do much directly to help in a situation like this. Interest rate cuts stimulate demand, but with Chinese factories shut, the world has a supply problem.

All the same, lower rates are “meant to flood the system with liquidity and improve consumer and business confidence ― just as happened in response to the financial crisis,” Dominion Lending Centres chief economist Sherry Cooper wrote in a client note.

Some economists argued that the interest rate cut could only add fuel to Canada’s accelerating house prices, as it will increase the maximum purchase price borrowers can afford. And it would come at a time when Canadian households are already struggling with a spike in insolvencies.

But in times of economic emergency, “financial vulnerability issues … take a back seat to confronting this shock head on,” Bank of Montreal economist Sal Guatieri wrote in a client note.
