Vinicius is benefiting from Hazard's latest injury – Madrid could too in the long run

The teenage Brazilian has been given an unexpected chance to shine due to the Belgian’s bad luck – and he’s making the most of it

When Eden Hazard broke down again, Madridismo – the club, the fans, everything that surrounds it – groaned.

But the winger’s latest injury issue was good news for one man.

While he would never wish ill on a team-mate, Vinicius Junior became the main beneficiary of the Belgian’s bad luck.

Zinedine Zidane started the forward in the Champions League last-16 first leg against Manchester City and then the Clasico battle with Barcelona.

Vinicius had not started a league match since December last year and only six all season, despite Hazard’s previous injury problems.

This time, though, with Rodrygo Goes suspended, Zidane turned to Vinicius in his hour of need, offering the winger one more chance. And he took it.

Vinicus’s burst forward created Isco’s goal in Madrid’s 2-1 defeat by Man City, and then he opened the scoring in the 2-0 Clasico win that put them top of La Liga by a point.

Zidane has always been measured in his praised for the mercurial forward, but he could not help himself after the top-of-the-table clash in the capital.

“I am so glad for Vinicius to get his goal,” explained the coach. “He has worked hard to get back into the team in recent weeks, and deserved the goal. To score such an important goal against a rival is fantastic for him.”

The Frenchman was not the only one impressed. Up in a box at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid’s all-time top goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo watched on.

When Vinicius broke the deadlock he offered a round of applause. The oft-sullen Portuguese forward doesn’t need to worry about anyone coming for his legacy yet, even though Vinicius imitated Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Suuuuiii!’ celebration.

Ronaldo can rest easy for now because Vinicius, at 19 years old, is still erratic, inconsistent. He is a ball of energy but doesn’t know how best to utilise himself, frequently thrilling and then disappointing in the same move, with his end product lacking.

Often, he finds brilliant positions on the pitch, leaving defenders running through treacle in his wake, but woefully shanks his shot or finds an opponent with his cut-back.

Ironically, his indecision and inaccuracy in the crucial moment contributed to his goal, with Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique standing off him, allowing Vinicius time to think instead of forcing his hand. That strategy usually works out well for the defending team where Vinicius is concerned.

The youngster, who overtook Lionel Messi as the Clasico’s youngest goalscorer in the 21st century, by 26 days, still needs a lot of direction.

Quite literally, with midfielder Toni Kroos frantically pointing out where he should run in the build-up to the goal. Once Vinicius made his move, Kroos released a perfect pass to set him up.

It should not be forgotten that while Madrid were silently drowning last season, Vinicius was the hand above the surface, the signs of life, the last gasp of air in their lungs.

He offers skill, speed, flair and spark for a Madrid side which has lacked it this season, and, in truth, since Ronaldo left. Karim Benzema cannot do it all, especially now he has just two goals in 14 games.

“[Vinicius] permanently creates chances and that’s not easy at all,” said Real Madrid figurehead Butragueno. “Hopefully, this is a liberation for him.”

This season, Vinicius has been weighed down at times, perhaps in conjunction with the ‘conscious competence’ learning model.

If last season his unconscious incompetence allowed him to attack with abandon, now it seems like he knows where he is going wrong – conscious incompetence – and at times it’s holding him back.

After he scored in September 2019 against Osasuna, his first goal since February that year, he cried tears of joy. This was his first league goal since then and it came after instruction from his compatriot Casemiro.

“I told him at half-time that he had to go for goal more,” the defensive midfielder told Real Madrid TV. “Many times, when it’s 50-50, he looks for Karim. If Karim is in a better position, of course he should pass.

“But if it’s 50-50 he has to go for goal. After the goal, he told me that he had Casemiro in his said saying ‘Shoot! Shoot!'”

Vinicius’s strike, backed up by Mariano Diaz’s at the death, earned Madrid their first home league win over Barcelona for 1,954 days – five long years.

The goal is, of course, for Vinicius to reach unconscious competence, stage four of the model, when his magic touch combines with perfect decision-making and consistency, making it all automatic.

That may be a year away, or two, or more, but Vinicius has put himself on the right path. That can only be good news for Madrid, who were banking on the Flamengo academy graduate becoming a fixture in their starting line-up for the next decade when they signed him as a 16-year-old.

“It’s a matter of letting him play,” Cacau, the director of Flamengo’s youth football school, told AS. “With minutes, players gain confidence and the goals come naturally.

“If he had confidence without playing, I’m sure that with continuity he will score lots of goals.”

Hazard was signed for the present; Vinicius for the future.

However, with the former out for at least two months after his operation in Dallas and Madrid locked in an intriguing title race that is likely to go to the wire, Vinicius is needed right now.

On the evidence of the past couple of games, he won’t disappoint.

Bank Of Canada Interest Rate Cut: Here Are The Winners And Losers

The Bank of Canada’s decision on Wednesday to follow the U.S. and cut its key lending rate is a clear sign households will see lower borrowing costs ahead, but that’s not good news for the many millions of Canadians who are actually lenders ― even if they don’t think of themselves as such.

Within hours of the Bank of Canada’s announcement Wednesday that it’s dropping its lending rate half a percentage point to to 1.25 per cent, most of Canada’s major banks followed suit, dropping their prime rates by the same amount.

That’s an instant boost to Canadians with variable-rate mortgages, as they will now be paying less in interest costs.

Watch: All the ways Canadians and Americans are now totally different, financially. Story continues below.

According to mortgage comparison site Ratehub, someone who bought a home for the average price in Canada (roughly $500,000) with 10 per cent down will save $115 a month on interest, or $1,380 a year.

The same is true for people with home equity lines of credit (HELOCs), which are also tied to banks’ prime rates.

And for new borrowers, it will mean an easier mortgage stress test. Ratehub estimates that, with the new lower prime rates and an expected tweak to the rules in April, the rate needed to qualify under the stress test will ease to 4.59 per cent, from its current 5.19 per cent.

Bad news for retirees

But for retired Canadians, these rate cuts could eat into savings and income.

“Unfortunately, Canadians can expect these lower rates to be passed along to their high interest savings accounts, GICs and other fixed income investments,” said James Laird, Ratehub co-founder and president of Canwise Financial, in a statement.

“Retirees who rely on fixed income investments should expect their monthly cash flow to decrease.”

Another way of looking at it is that it’s good for younger Canadians, who tend to borrow more than they save, and bad for older Canadians, who save more than they borrow.

Typically, when Canadians retire, their savings are converted low-risk investments designed to generate a stable monthly income ― mainly cash and government and corporate bonds. So while retirees don’t think of themselves as lenders, that is in fact what they tend to be.

And the interest earned on those bonds tends to rise and fall with central banks’ lending rates ― which is why critics of low interest rates say they reward borrowers while punishing savers.

Lowest mortgage rates ever?

Even with the interest rate cuts in the U.S. and Canada this week, prices in the bond markets are signalling more rate cuts ahead. Bond markets in the U.S. are signalling that they expect the Federal Reserve’s overnight lending rate to drop to below 0.5 per cent by the end of the year, from its current target of 1 to 1.25 per cent.

If that happens, the BoC is likely to drop its key lending rate in lock step. (Leaving Canadian rates higher than U.S. ones would cause the loonie to soar, and the BoC doesn’t want that ― bad for exports.)

This week, the interest paid on two-year U.S. government bonds hit an all-time low of below 1 per cent. U.S. mortgage rates quickly followed, with 30-year mortgages hitting their lowest ever rate at 3.89 per cent.

The same could soon be headed for Canada. Interest on five-year Government of Canada bonds has dropped in half over just the past month ― to around 0.7 per cent, from 1.4 per cent. If this trend continues for just a few more business days, those rates will be the lowest ever.

That means borrowers of the most popular kind of mortgage in Canada ― the five-year fixed-rate ― could soon see the lowest mortgage rates this country has ever seen.

Unfortunately, the downside would be that retired Canadians will see the worst returns on fixed-income investments they have ever seen. The one upshot for the Golden Years crowd might be that, with lower mortgage rates, they can expect the value of their homes to keep soaring.

The return of the king – but no throne for Maradona at Boca

There will be no special seat for the eccentric Gimnasia boss as he returns to the Bombonera pitch, but he will receive a hero’s welcome

Overwrought, melodramatic, filled with unforgettable soundbites: Diego Maradona’s last appearance on the hallowed turf of the Bombonera has gone down in Argentine football legend.

In November 2001, four years after making his final professional appearance for Boca Juniors, the ever-divisive 1986 World Cup hero was treated to a farewell tribute match featuring the likes of Davor Suker, Eric Cantona, Carlos Valderrama and even Marcelo Bielsa, coaching Diego’s Argentina Stars.

“I made mistakes and I paid, but the ball can never be tainted,” the weeping No. 10 spluttered after the game, perhaps the most famous of the countless phrases he has uttered over the years that are remembered almost as fondly as his goals and titles.

Since that spring afternoon, Maradona has been a regular visitor to the Xeneize, holding a private box in their Bombonera home. But Saturday marks his first official visit since relaunching his coaching career with Gimnasia – and in a game that Boca must win.

The Buenos Aires giants have been rejuvenated since December’s elections brought Juan Roman Riquelme back to the club as vice-president in charge of playing affairs, with the ex-playmaker putting Miguel Angel Russo, coach when Boca last won the Copa Libertadores in 2007, on the bench.

A draw in January against Independiente was followed by five straight Superliga wins that propelled them back up the table, with 15 goals scored and just one conceded during that sparkling run.

Arch-rivals River Plate nevertheless retain control of the summit, leading by one point as the league heads into its final weekend. The Millonario visit Atletico Tucuman on Saturday at the same time that Boca kick off against Diego’s Gimnasia, knowing they only need match their adversary’s result to take the title.

Maradona has also launched a warning: with Gimnasia also fighting tooth and nail against relegation, his old club should not expect any favours.

“I am the Gimnasia coach. I love Boca but my little heart is Tripero,” he told reporters after downing Atletico Tucuman 1-0 in the La Plata’s side’s last outing.

The Maradona carnival began in September when Gimnasia shocked the football world by appointing the ex-Argentina and Dorados coach.

By all accounts, he is less a tactician than a motivator around the club: assistant Sebastian Mendez takes charge of most of the nuts and bolts of coaching, while Diego attends training sporadically or not at all; at the end of February, he missed four consecutive sessions following defeat to Rosario Central.

But the effect he has on the Argentine top flight has been nothing short of sensational.

Opposing teams have fallen over themselves to pay homage to the little firecracker, with Newell’s Old Boys kicking off a tradition of giving Diego a plush leather ‘throne’ – because the bench is obviously beneath such a football aristocrat – from which he can watch the games. Gimnasia also copied the homage, auctioning off one signed piece of furniture for AR$300,000 (around US$5,000) to one lucky – and well-off – fan.

And while it is easy to see his arrival in La Plata as a publicity stunt, results have picked up. Prior to Maradona’s appointment Gimnasia were rock-bottom with four defeats out of five and heading for relegation; after a rocky start of three further defeats, they have now lost just four of their last 14 games and, last Saturday, finally got their first home win of the season.

True to that famous moniker of the ‘Hand of God’, Diego invoked the spirits: fans were told to attend the game clutching rosaries and crucifixes to end the curse, while the entire first team received crucifixes from their coach as gifts.

“I don’t believe in these things… but it was a beautiful gift, he gave each of us a chain, we will have something of Diego forever,” beamed defender Maxi Coronel after the game to Jogo Bonito.

Whatever one thinks of Maradona, there is no doubt that he has injected life and confidence into a team that prior to his arrival were all but dead in the water, resigned to playing next season in the Primera Nacional.

One would expect Maradona’s Bombonera return to be the biggest tribute of all, given his status as their most famous fan and his previous achievements at the club as a player in spells in both the 80s and 90s.

This being Diego, though, things are never that simple. For a start, his feud with Riquelme that dates back to the pair’s falling out in the Argentina team in 2009 still smoulders, while he is also no fan of president Jorge Amor Ameal, who won the December elections with Roman on his ticket despite Maradona’s criticisms.

“This has become a soap opera and I’m not interested in being involved in this,” Ameal told TyC Sports when quizzed about the plans for Maradona’s homecoming. “He is a Boca idol, we respect idols and we have always said that idols should not get involved in politics.

“We have to take care of Diego, he shouldn’t be made to do things which are wrong.” Maradona’s reply was instant and typically withering: “Ameal? Isn’t it Amear? I don’t know him from anywhere. I don’t know if he used to milk cows, if he sold milk.

“Now he says, ‘No, we won’t give Maradona a plaque.’ Who asked you for one, mate? Who asked you, but you know where you can stick your plaque?”

There were, at least, kind words for another former Albiceleste charge, Boca veteran Carlos Tevez: “I want to tell Carlitos I am going to give him a little kiss. I’m going to be all over him.”

Thankfully, tensions have calmed in the days leading up to Saturday’s game and there will be a plaque for Maradona at the Bombonera, handed over by his ex-team-mate Miguel Brindisi and destined for his crowded mantelpiece rather than any delicate areas of Ameal’s anatomy.

While there will be no throne this time, Boca are planning to lay out a yellow ‘red’ carpet to walk over on his way to the dugout.

Diego’s former agent and long-time collaborator Guillermo Coppola, last seen twerking in an Ibiza beach party, is also set to be there, while a rousing standing ovation from the home crowd is guaranteed despite his hopes of spiking Boca’s title hopes once and for all.

The season is not quite done yet for Gimnasia, who can still accrue more points in their fight against relegation in the upcoming Copa Superliga (they currently trail fellow strugglers Patronato and Colon by three, with two teams going down automatically). But three points at the Bombonera would be a huge boost for a side that against all odds has shown steady improvement during Maradona’s chaotic reign.

Having impressed during his single season at Dorados, Diego himself also has a point to prove as he still seeks recognition as a serious coach.

While the thrones and effusive homages that greet his every appearance hardly aid that image, a win against his beloved Boca would go a long way to show that behind the larger-than-life cartoon figure is a man who can be an asset on the bench.

If that interferes with the Xeneize’s Superliga aspirations, that is the price they will have to pay.

Canada Adds 30,000 Jobs In February, But Unemployment Jumps In Ontario, B.C.

The country added 30,000 net new jobs in February, Statistics Canada said Friday morning in a report that showed the coronavirus outbreak has had only limited impact on Canada’s economy so far.

The unemployment rate rose to 5.6 per cent, from 5.5 per cent in January, as slightly more people entered the workforce than found work.

Much of the job growth was concentrated in Quebec, while British Columbia and Ontario shed a small number of jobs, and saw significant increases in their jobless rates.

Watch: Canada’s most in-demand jobs in 2020, according to Indeed. Story continues below.

Ontario’s unemployment rate rose to 5.5 per cent, from 5.2 per cent a month earlier, as the province lost 3,200 jobs.

British Columbia lost 6,500 jobs in February, and its unemployment rate jumped to 5 per cent, from 4.5 per cent.

Meanwhile, “employment in Quebec increased for a third consecutive month, up by 20,000 in February,” Statistics Canada said. “The unemployment rate fell 0.6 percentage points to 4.5 per cent, the lowest rate in the province since comparable data became available in 1976.”

Despite falling oil prices to start the year, Alberta added 11,000 jobs, most of them among youth, StatCan said. The jobless rate there fell one notch, to 7.2 per cent.

Employment was largely unchanged in other provinces, StatCan’s data showed.

Youth had a particularly good month, the data showed, with more than two-thirds of the net job growth ― some 22,000 jobs ― going to this group. But with more young people entering the workforce, the youth jobless rate didn’t budge, at 10.3 per cent.
