'Gilmour will stay grounded' – Mount will help Chelsea team-mate to deal with the hype

The England international is three years senior to his midfield partner and he thinks that he will handle the spotlight with ease

Mason Mount does not expect Billy Gilmour to struggle in the spotlight, but is ready to lend a hand to his Chelsea team-mate after facing the hype machine earlier in the season.

Gilmour had already made several appearances for Chelsea this season, but the 18-year-old’s successive man-of-the-match performances against Liverpool and Everton have earned him wider recognition.

The midfielder was the third top trending topic worldwide on Twitter after his display against Liverpool in the FA Cup win on Tuesday, and earned praise from the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Alan Shearer after the match.

His starring role in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Everton drew further positive comments from Roy Keane, and Mount is confident Gilmour can handle the big stage.

“He is very grounded,” Mount, who has established himself as a first-team fixture in Frank Lampard’s side this season, said at Stamford Bridge after the win over Everton. “He has got a very, very good family around him and he is a very screwed-on boy so that won’t get to him at all.

“I won’t let it get to him as well, I’ll keep him grounded! No, he’ll be fine.

“I’m not surprised [by his performances]. I know what he is as a player, as a boy. I am very close to him so I know what character he has. I had no doubts about him coming in, stepping up and performing like the way he has in the last two games.

“I have massive confidence in him and he shows it when he comes out onto the pitch. The young players coming through, they are going to have these challenges. It is obviously a big achievement to make it into the first team, to start a game at home at Stamford Bridge.

“The way my debut went here was very good. I scored but Billy has stepped up and done brilliantly. He’s come into the team, been dominant, been confident on the ball and that’s what you want.”

Mount scored and played well alongside Gilmour and Ross Barkley in midfield, adding that he was in his best position after moving around in different roles in recent weeks.

“I always see myself as a No.8 because I like to do the other side of the game as well, not just going forward and attacking,” the 21-year-old added. “I’ve played No.10 throughout my career, I’ve always gone in between so I don’t mind now.”

Lampard described Chelsea’s display against Everton as the best home performance of the season after his side managed to record back-to-back home wins in the league for the first time since November.

Mount agreed that it all came together for Chelsea, despite having seven players out due to injury or suspension.

“Speaking about it in the changing room afterwards, it is about time we scored a few goals at home, kept a clean sheen sheet and had a very dominant performance. It all came together,” Mount continued.

“You always want to win your home games, that’s the most important thing. Obviously, the last two games we had Liverpool – a tough, tough game – and then [Everton] again as well. So, we had to stay focused because they were two tough games.

“The main thing was to keep a clean sheet because that’s more important or similarly important to scoring goals. We did that and the goals come when we are playing well, with combinations and finishing off good attacks.”

The only negative point to come out of Sunday’s performance was that Mount came off injured in the 60th minute after a collision with Tom Davies.

“I took a little knock in the back of my knee,” said the England international. “It was precautionary to see how it was. But now, I feel fine and hopefully in the next couple of days I will get treatment and it will be fine.”

Torreira’s season could be over at Arsenal as he faces up to 10 weeks out with ankle fracture

The Gunners have put a timescale on the Uruguayan’s recovery from an untimely knock and may not see him again until the 2020-21 campaign

Lucas Torreira may have seen an ankle injury bring his 2019-20 campaign to a close, with Arsenal expecting the Uruguayan midfielder to be sidelined for up to 10 weeks.

The combative South American suffered an untimely blow during an FA Cup fifth-round clash with Portsmouth.

He was forced from the field early on at Fratton Park, with it soon revealed that he had suffered a fracture to his right ankle.

Arsenal were initially reluctant to put a timescale on his recovery, with further medical assessment required before the full severity of the problem could be determined.

The Gunners have now revealed that Torreira may not be seen again for the rest of the season.

Even their most positive prognosis, which puts the 24-year-old out for eight weeks, would have him struggling to figure again this term.

Arsenal’s latest fitness update on the club’s official website said: “Sustained fracture to right ankle during Portsmouth (a) on March 2.

“Still receiving continual assessments. Recovery process expected to take between eight to ten weeks.”

Torreira has taken in 33 appearances for Arsenal this season and was hoping to nail down a regular role under Mikel Arteta.

He may be denied the opportunity to win further favour with a new boss until 2020-21.

The Gunners will certainly need to look for alternative options when they return to Premier League action on Wednesday with a testing trip to Manchester City.

Arteta will take in a reunion with his former employers unbeaten in top-flight competition through 2020 – with a 1-0 victory over West Ham collected last time out.

The Spaniard may be without Shkodran Mustafi, though, for a visit to the familiar surrounds of the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal have stated that the German defender continues to nurse a “tight right thigh” and will be carefully monitored before midweek duty.

Another defensive option, January signing Cedric Soares, is expected to return to full training this week as he waits on a debut for the club.

Sead Kolasinac is not expected to come back into contention until the end of March, after suffering a shoulder strain, while Calum Chambers is a long-term absentee with knee ligament damage.

Liverpool seeking 'another special night at Anfield' against Atletico – Milner

The midfielder is “hopeful” the Reds can overturn a 1-0 deficit when they play host to the Spanish giants in Europe this week

James Milner acknowledges that Liverpool are facing a tough task to overcome a “well organised” Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, but he believes the Anfield atmosphere can help inspire a turnaround.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie at Wanda Metropolitano, with Saul Niguez’s early effort ultimately proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have also suffered a couple of damaging domestic defeats since returning to action following the winter break, with a 3-0 reversal at Watford bringing their 44-game unbeaten run to an end.

An FA Cup exit at the hands of Chelsea was to follow, but Liverpool got back on track with a morale-boosting 2-1 home victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Merseyside outfit are now only two games away from Premier League glory, but their focus must now switch to the return meeting with Atletico.

Milner says Liverpool will head into Wednesday’s game in good spirits after getting back to winning ways, as he targets “another special night at Anfield” in an ongoing bid to defend their European crown.

“I think obviously coming into that game off the back of a good result is pleasing, it gives us a good feeling,” Milner told the club’s official website .

“The crowd will be right with us, they were with us again, and it’ll be a special night – it always is, so it’s down to us to turn around a tough result.

“We know how good they are, we know how well organised they are but hopefully we can push them all the way and overturn that and have another special night at Anfield.”

By beating Bournemouth at the weekend, Liverpool extended their run of consecutive home wins in the top-flight to 22, setting a new record in the process.

“I think obviously it’s an incredible place to play football, the fans and the stadium,” Milner said of Anfield.

“You look at how amazing the teams have been through the years for Liverpool and teams for Shankly and things like that, to be mentioned in the same level as those guys and to be up there with the records is special for us and that’s what we want to keep doing.

“We want to keep creating history for this club, it’s got an amazing history anyway but we want to keep adding to that.

“The hunger is there, you can see it from the boys and we just want to keep winning trophies and breaking as many records as we can.”

Milner added on Liverpool striving for improvement after an unexpected dip in form: “It’s always going to happen. No team goes through a season without having a couple of performances which aren’t at the level.

“It happens, it’s a long season and you see how many games we’ve played and any sport you play, it’s impossible to be at your highest level all year, year in and year out.

“You try your best and it just doesn’t happen, and that’s when you need to find a way to win. We’ve done that but we need to get back to the level that we know we can perform at.

“But the boys are working hard, you can see that it’s not through a lack of effort and the two finishes were clinical from the lads up front.

“We could have closed it out as well but they had chances as well, so there’s plenty to look at on what we can improve on.”

Ighalo's arrival at Man Utd has provoked a 'good reaction' from Martial – Keane

A Red Devils legend singled out the Frenchman for praise following a thrilling derby victory against Manchester City over the weekend

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has stepped his game up since Odion Ighalo’s arrival at Old Trafford, according to Roy Keane.

Martial has scored in three of United’s last five games across all competitions, with his latest strike coming in a 2-0 home victory over noisy neighbours Manchester City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got the better of Pep Guardiola for the third time this season on Sunday, as his side produced another combative performance against the reigning Premier League champions.

January signing Bruno Fernandes recorded his third assist in United colours after finding Martial with an inventive free-kick on the half-hour mark, which the France international met with a well-placed volley that slipped through Ederson’s fingers and into the City net.

Scott McTominay capitalised on another Ederson error to double the scoring in stoppage time, after great hold-up play from substitute Ighalo, another of United’s winter acquisitions who appears to have lifted the rest of the squad.

Keane believes the Shanghai Shenhua loanee has provoked a “good reaction” from Martial, who is now working hard to retain a spot in Solskjaer’s starting XI.

“You’ve had a reaction as well from Martial,” the United legend told Sky Sports post-match. “Sometimes a new striker comes in, you praise the new striker, but then that pushes the other lads.

“There’s almost been a reaction from Martial, thinking: ‘Oh, I’ve got another player to fight with for my position’. And there’s been a good reaction.”

Keane went on to praise Luke Shaw for his contribution and Solskjaer for masterminding another “big game” win, before urging United to build on the result by beating Tottenham next week.

“I’ve been critical of some of the players. But people like [Luke] Shaw and [Anthony] Martial, you know, they’ve done well today. I have to give credit for that,” Keane said.

“And it’s a big boost for Ole for a number of reasons. I think United had to win a big game at home sometime.

“It’s okay away from home on the counter-attack, but it’s Manchester United, we have to win big games at home.

“The atmosphere around the place is fantastic and Ole and the players deserve huge credit.

“But of course now, I keep saying, when you get a big win, you’ve gotta follow it up, Tottenham next week, with another victory.”

Despite the fact that City dominated possession in the second half, Keane felt United were always comfortable and was delighted to see the Old Trafford crowd get behind the players in such a crucial fixture.

“For all City’s possession, they weren’t dangerous really,” he said. “They were playing a front four, [Raheem] Sterling didn’t do enough, they weren’t making any darting runs, nobody running off the ball.

“It was easy for United. If people are playing in front of you, it’s very, very easy. But also it was the dogged performance that pleased probably the supporters as well.

“It wasn’t pretty, they stuck at it, the fans stayed right behind them and I think the goal right at the end was fantastic. I’ve not really seen the atmosphere like this for a long time.”

Keane added on United proving they can compete with the elite once again by getting the better of City: “I think Ole needed it, the club, I’ve mentioned earlier, for their recovery and if they can get back to the very top.

“But brilliant, brilliant performance. Not pretty, it was dogged. To me, they showed a lot of pride, a lot of spirit.

“Brilliant, just great to be here. I really enjoyed it.”

Betis loss could cost Real Madrid La Liga title – Casemiro

Zinedine Zidane’s side slipped to what could be a very costly defeat as they squandered the chance to reclaim top spot in the league

Casemiro admitted Real Madrid’s loss to Real Betis could cost them the La Liga title.

Madrid were stunned in a 2-1 defeat on Sunday, leaving them second to rivals Barcelona in the table with 11 matches remaining.

Casemiro said it could be the result that denies Madrid, who are two points adrift of Barca, the league title.

“They were superior and played better, there is no excuse, football is simple,” the midfielder said, via the club’s website.

“In La Liga every game is difficult. To win La Liga we have to play well in every game and we didn’t play well.

“We have to keep working hard, we have not been up to the task and we have not played like we did against Barcelona.

“We are human too, but it could cost us the league title. We have to look at Eibar now.”

While Karim Benzema’s penalty cancelled out Sidnei’s opener in the first half, Cristian Tello scored an 82nd-minute winner for Betis.

Madrid defender Raphael Varane urged his team to continue fighting late in the campaign.

“We lacked a lot of intensity, especially in the first half. We didn’t play at the pace we wanted to and we let the opponents have the ball,” he said.

“We’re dropping important points, but we’re confident we can fight until the end.

“We’re trying very hard to get back to the top of the league and today was a drop in quality from everyone.

“We still have a lot of games left to play and we’re confident we’re going to get that intensity back.”

Manager Zinedine Zidane took responsiblity for the defeat to Betis and described the match as the worst of the season for Real.

“We didn’t get anything today, and I’m to blame for it. I have to look at what happened; we’re going to fight the league to the end,” Zidane said post-match.

“I am with my players till the death. I am responsible here. We will analyse what happened and move on.

“We played badly. Many mistakes. We lacked everything, play, possession, aggression, our worst game of season. Didn’t deserve to win. We can’t be happy. We started badly, and could not correct it. I’ve no explanation at moment, we just lacked a bit of everything.”

On voudrait y croire encore.
