'We can't give up chances like this!' – Ramos furious at Madrid's Betis slip

Rather than return to the top of the table, the Merengue suffered a second straight away Liga reverse as they went down to the Seville side

Sergio Ramos insists Real Madrid will not “drive ourselves mad” after following up their Clasico win with defeat at Real Betis, but he acknowledged Sunday’s match in Seville represented a huge missed opportunity.

Madrid took pole position in the Liga title race with victory over rivals Barcelona last week, only to fall back to second with a 2-1 loss at Betis after the Blaugrana’s triumph the previous day.

Zinedine Zidane’s side struggled to break down Betis and were fortunate to be level when Sidnei, the scorer of a brilliant opener, conceded a penalty that Karim Benzema dispatched.

More teams

However, Cristian Tello–  formerly of Barca – netted an 82nd-minute winner, meaning Madrid have won just one of their past five matches in all competitions.

Ramos recognises there is a long way to go in the season, with 11 matches remaining, but he is keen to see his side rally to ensure there are no further setbacks.

The captain, who acknowledged Madrid “didn’t feel comfortable at the back”, with Betis wasteful prior to their winner, reflected: “This is football.

“When things don’t go the way you want them to, when things you’ve worked on all week don’t go the way you planned, that’s how it can be. We weren’t decisive enough in certain phases of the game. It wasn’t enough.

“I thought we deserved the draw, but we have to now be self-critical. There’s nothing good to take from this game, but there’s a lot of the season remaining.

“It’s a blow. We wanted the leadership back but we weren’t able to claim it.

“We’re not going to drive ourselves mad. Of course, we won last week against Barca. After dropping three more points, we know there are still a lot of points still to play for with 11 games remaining.

“But we know if we want to be champions, we can’t give up chances like this. We know this is a difficult place to come and Betis are a difficult team to play, but we can’t drop points.

“We have to put this behind us and come back even stronger.

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is the spirit of the group. We have to gain confidence and that’s the objective of the week to come.”

Mbappe misses training again to leave PSG sweating over his fitness for Dortmund clash

Thomas Tuchel may have to make do without a prized asset when his side welcome German opposition to Parc des Princes

Kylian Mbappe was absent from Paris Saint-Germain training once again on Tuesday, as he continues to struggle with a throat infection ahead of a Champions League showdown against Borussia Dortmund.

The 21-year-old was unable to take part in a session on Monday due to illness, and Goal has learned that he is now a major doubt for Wednesday’s last-16 second-leg tie at Parc des Princes.

Mbappe played the full 90 minutes of PSG’s 2-1 first-leg defeat to Dortmund at Westfalenstadion, which was ultimately decided by a second-half brace from Erling Haaland.

The reigning Ligue 1 champions haven’t played since last week’s 5-1 win over Lyon in the semi-finals of the French Cup, during which Mbappe played a starring role with a superb hat-trick.

PSG were due to take in a trip to Strasbourg on Saturday, but the fixture was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The COVID-19 crisis has caused huge disruptions to the world’s sporting calendar, with the Champions League now in danger of being postponed to contain the spread of the illness.

It has already been confirmed that no fans will be allowed entry into Parc des Princes in midweek, and Barcelona’s second-leg date with Napoli at Camp Nou on March 18 is also now set to be held behind closed doors.

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel has no other selection issues heading into the Dortmund contest, with Edinson Cavani returning for the team’s latest training session after leaving early on Monday for personal reasons.

Cavani will likely be asked to lead the line against Dortmund alongside Mauro Icardi and Neymar, who scored PSG’s away goal in the first leg.

Club captain Thiago Silva was also back in the fold after recovering from a hamstring injury which has kept him out of action since a 4-3 victory at home to Bordeaux on February 23.

After their latest European outing, PSG will switch their attention back to Ligue 1, with Nice set to arrive at Parc des Princes on Sunday.

Tuchel’s men currently hold a 12-point advantage over Marseille at the top of the table having played a game more, and are on course for a third successive title.

'Liverpool have the power & quality to beat Atletico' – Luis Garcia backs Reds to progress in Champions League

A man who enjoyed successful spells at both clubs believes Jurgen Klopp’s men will overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit at Anfield

Liverpool have enough talent within their ranks to knock Atletico Madrid out of the Champions League, according to Luis Garcia, who thinks the Anfield crowd will have a huge part to play in the second-leg clash.

An early Saul Niguez goal at Wanda Metropolitano was enough to give Atletico a slender 1-0 advantage to defend when they head to Merseyside on Wednesday.

The Reds struggled to carve out clear-cut chances against Diego Simeone’s men in the first leg, but history suggests they are capable of producing a much-improved attacking display in front of their own fans.

Liverpool overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit by beating Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield in last season’s semi-finals and went on the win the competition after overcoming Tottenham in an all-English showpiece.

Jurgen Klopp will have to mastermind another famous comeback if his side are to remain on course for a third successive final appearance, and Luis Garcia is “positive” Liverpool “have the power and quality to overcome the situation”.

The 41-year-old, who played for both clubs over the course of his career, believes Atletico are capable of stifling the Reds again given Simeone’s tactical nous, but he is leaning towards a home victory in the midweek encounter.

“[I think it will be] tough for both sides, to be honest,” the former Spain international told Liverpool’s official website.

“Here in Spain and in Madrid the feeling is a little bit the same – they know Anfield is a tough stadium and not many teams get out alive, the crowd always helps the home team. [But] actually, they know Simeone knows how to deal with these kinds of situations.

“After what we saw in the Metropolitano, where they were working the way they normally do – defending very well, waiting for the chance and the fast transitions and counterattacks they do so well – they still think they can make it.

“And then the other way around, knowing Liverpool and after being there many times in many situations where Liverpool needed to score goals and managed it, they know what Anfield can be if they need to score one, two or three goals.

“I’m quite positive, to be honest. I think Liverpool have the power, quality and talent to overcome the situation and go through to the next round.”

After their latest European outing, Liverpool will switch their attention back to the Premier League, with a Merseyside derby meeting with Everton at Goodison Park scheduled for next Monday.

‘Man Utd don’t need Pogba anymore’ – Fernandes makes World Cup winner disposable, says Ince

The former Red Devils midfielder says a France international has failed to produce at Old Trafford and could finally see an exit door swing open

Paul Pogba has been told that Manchester United do not “need him anymore”, with Paul Ince suggesting that the emergence of Bruno Fernandes could lead a World Cup winner through the exits.

A France international midfielder has appeared to be heading in that direction for some time.

Pogba admitted in the summer of 2019 that he was ready to embrace a new challenge away from Old Trafford, with talk of interest from Real Madrid and Juventus never far away.

It could be that he sees a transfer wish granted 12 months on, with the current campaign having become an injury-ravaged write off.

With Pogba ruled out of his plans for long periods, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has sought inspiration from elsewhere in the United engine room.

The likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic have raised their respective games, while January signing Fernandes has quickly become a talismanic presence.

With the Portuguese playmaker thriving, and a supporting cast impressing, Ince believes United will be tempted to finally rid themselves of the distraction that Pogba has become.

The former Red Devils star told Paddy Power of a player who has failed to produce his best since returning to England in 2016 as part of a record-breaking £89 million ($116m) deal: “Fans thought Paul Pogba was going to be the star, but look how that panned out.

“If he still wants to leave I’d say it would be far easier for Ole to do so now that Bruno is around. It doesn’t feel like they need him anymore.

“His truly great games have been few and far between, so the current situation could suit club and player.

“If he does come back before the end of the season, he’s not even going to get in the team. He’s going to have to fight for his place – if he even gets one.”

Pogba has been restricted to just eight appearances for United in the 2019-20 campaign.

He is closing in on full fitness once more, with there a desire on his part to see competitive game time ahead of Euro 2020, but it remains to be seen what role he will have to play for the Red Devils.

Solskjaer has suggested that he would like to use Pogba in tandem with Fernandes, but dropping those displaying greater consistency will not be easy.

United, who remain in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Premier League, will be back in action on Thursday when taking in the first leg of a Europa League last-16 showdown with LASK.

'Man City have been very unlucky' – Arsenal coach Arteta wary on his Etihad return

The Spaniard does not see much wrong with the Citizens performance-wise as he attempts to guide his team to a win

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insists Manchester City have been “very unlucky” this season and expects to face a fearsome response to their Manchester derby defeat.

Pep Guardiola’s side lost 2-0 at Manchester United on Sunday to leave Premier League leaders Liverpool needing just six points to win the title.

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp’s men could become champions before their next match if City lose their back-to-back home games against Arsenal and Burnley this week.

City been beaten twice by United and once by Tottenham since Arteta left his post as assistant to take charge at Emirates Stadium, leading to scrutiny over the state of the team under Guardiola, despite winning the Carabao Cup final and recording an impressive 2-1 victory at Real Madrid in the past two weeks.

Arteta believes fortune has not been on their side and is in no doubt that Arsenal must be at their best to get a result at the Etihad Stadium.

“Sometimes small details make the difference. I think they’ve been very unlucky,” he said on Monday. “This is football. It can happen.

“We have to be at our best, that’s for sure, to have any chance of winning the game.”

Arteta is nonetheless looking forward to returning to the club where he learned much of his coaching craft under Guardiola after retiring from playing in 2016.

“It’s going to be a very special night. I’m very excited to get back there,” he said.

“Now, I’m in a different position on a different bench. I will defend my club as well as I can.”

Arsenal battled to a 1-0 win over West Ham on Saturday that keeps them in the hunt for a Champions League place with 10 games to go.

The Gunners are eight points behind fourth-place Chelsea and just five adrift of United in fifth, a position that could be enough to qualify for Europe’s elite competition if City’s ban due to Financial Fair Play irregularities is upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

“It’s still a long way to go. We want to go game by game,” Arteta said. “Three weeks ago, it was impossible [to secure Champions League qualification]. Now, it looks a bit more possible.”

Arteta added he is hopeful the club will agree a new contract with Bukayo Saka, who has impressed this season.

“The club is doing what it has to do and holding conversations. Hopefully, we’ll get a result,” he said of talks over a new deal.

'We can't just get our violins out' – Alli urges Tottenham to move on from striker injury crisis

Spurs’ injury woes worsened on Monday as the English international called for the team to focus

Dele Alli has called on Tottenham to ‘step up’ as their injury crisis in attack worsened ahead of their Champions League tie against RB Leipzig.

Spurs revealed on Monday that Dutch forward Steven Bergwijn had suffered a “significant” sprain to his left knee during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Burnley – with Jose Mourinho admitting the player is unlikely to feature again this season.

The injury further limits Tottenham’s attacking options, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min already out until the closing weeks of the campaign.

Left-back Ben Davies will not be available against Leipzig either, with Mourinho’s men trailling 1-0 after the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Alli, who has been deployed as an emergency striker in recent matches, lamented the injury to Bergwijn, but hoped Spurs could put the news aside to to focus on the rest of their season.

“I think obviously firstly it’s difficult to see Steve get injured, a new guy and a top guy,” the England international said.

“I’ve shown that I like scoring goals, although it’s probably not my most natural position. But we can’t just get our violins out. We need to step up.”

Mourinho was also preaching optimism, insisting the team still has hope heading to Red Bull Arena on Tuesday.

Reflecting on Spurs’ latest injury misfortune at his pre-match media conference, the Portuguese tactician said: “I can believe it.

“Ben [Davies will be] one week, two weeks. With Steven, I don’t expect him to play again this season.

“We’re used to it. I’d say we were psychologically more down with the other injuries, because when you’ve got four or five injuries, what’s six or seven?

“We are losing 1-0 at half-time. We were losing 1-0 at half-time two days ago [against Burnley]. It’s something that’s happened to us a few times this season.

“You ask me how can you score two goals without Kane, Son or Bergwijn, but there are many ways to score goals.

“A Leipzig player could even do what Antonio Rudiger did and score for us (an own goal in Chelsea’s 2-1 win).”

Defeat would end Tottenham’s hopes of silverware for another season, having exited the FA Cup last week, but Mourinho is confident he will deliver success during his tenure.

“I believe that Tottenham is not going to be my only club without silverware,” he said. “I won at every club and I believe I’m going to do it at Tottenham.”

Oil Price War Between Saudis And Russians Will Hit Alberta Hard

MONTREAL ― A policy dispute between Russia and Saudi Arabia has escalated into an oil price war that threatens to destabilize Alberta’s finances and puts yet another large question mark on the future of Canada’s fossil fuel industry.

But the upshot for Canadian commuters is that gas prices are headed lower.

The benchmark price for U.S. crude oil fell as much as 22 per cent over the weekend, to around US$32 a barrel. This comes after Russia and Saudi Arabia failed to come to an agreement on oil production cuts, and the Saudi oil exporter immediately cut oil prices to Asia by the largest amount in decades.

Watch: Global stock prices fall on oil price shock and recession fears. Story continues below.

Western Canadian Select oil, which typically trades at a discount to global oil prices, was at around US$26 a barrel over the weekend, down from a recent level of around US$35. It’s down by more than half its previous value in the past year.

The weekend price slide had an impact on the Canadian dollar, which tends to move with the price of oil. It was trading at 73.5 cents U.S., down from around 74.5 cents last week, and the lowest levels for the loonie in two years.

Demand for oil had been dropping for weeks due to the slowdown in travel and manufacturing caused by the coronavirus, and the OPEC oil-producing nations had been in talks with partner Russia about an orderly reduction in production. With no deal reached, Saudi Arabia signalled this weekend it intends to ramp up production and flood the market with cheap oil.

When oil prices collapse, high-cost producers see their profit margins shrink the most, and Canadian oilsands operations have some of the highest production costs in the world.

“From a Canada perspective, the timing clearly couldn’t be much worse,” Bank of Montreal economist Benjamin Reitzes wrote in a client note Monday morning. “Oil was already under pressure from the COVID-related drop in demand, and the underlying economy wasn’t particularly strong heading into all this,” he added.

“The ball is now in the federal government’s court, with stimulus now needed in the coming 2020-2021 budget. This is when Canada’s healthy federal balance sheet will be useful and why we’ve been advocating for domestic governments to improve their fiscal positions when times were good.”

Could cost Alberta billions

The oil price drop could prove particularly difficult for Alberta, where every dollar decline in the price of oil takes $350 million out of government coffers, according to Blake Shaffer, an assistant professor of economics and public policy at the University of Calgary.

Alberta’s recently-tabled budget assumed that the U.S. benchmark oil price would average at $58 per barrel this year ― a level that is now $26 higher than the actual price.

“We’re talking about a $7 billion decline in revenue expectations,” he told CBC News over the weekend.

Saudi Arabia, which has the lowest oil production costs anywhere in the world, is aware that deep price cuts threaten high-cost producers ― and that is part of the point.

“Inefficient producers will have to get out,” Saudi oil minister Ali Al-Naimi declared in 2016, making it clear his country prefers to flood the market with cheap oil, rather than cut production, when oil prices fall.

Gas prices coming down

There is an upside to this for Canadian drivers and transport-dependent industries: Falling gas prices, which are down 3.4 cents per litre on average across the country in the past month, and 6.4 cents lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy.

“For motorists, I urge them to be in absolutely no hurry to fill up as gas prices will drop in nearly every nook and cranny of the country, from the smallest cities to the largest metros, at a time of year that prices are usually rising, we’ll see anything but that,” Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said in a statement.

“The national average came into March like a lamb and will likely be leaving as a lion, with prices roaring lower.”
