How Chelsea are dealing with coronavirus pandemic: From Hudson-Odoi's recovery to Lampard's training plan

The Blues have had to make changes behind the scenes due to the public health scare that is affecting much of the world

Chelsea are trying to cope with the postponement of normal business as the coronavirus outbreak impacts English and European football, as well as the world at large.

Manager Frank Lampard instructed his players to stay home after Callum Hudson-Odoi became the first English footballer to test positive for Covid-19 which has since seen the stoppage of the Premier League and the rest of the domestic game.

All of Chelsea’s first-team squad entered self-isolation for two weeks, with the club following government health guidelines, and the first-team building is being deep cleaned regularly.

Some staff continue to work at Cobham Training Centre and the players will be allowed back next week although many English clubs are opting to tell their players to stay away.

Personalised training programmes have been provided to the players with exercise bikes sent to the homes of the first-team stars. Lampard, who is a big advocate of nutritional programmes, has given advice on diets to follow for his players from home.

Hudson-Odoi has since made a speedy recovery and he has followed the club’s train-from-home programme.

Many players, including the likes of Willian, have small gyms at their house and others have been able to train in their gardens due to the good weather.

Mason Mount was pictured playing at a five-a-side pitch with his childhood friend Declan Rice at Trent Park Football Centre in Barnet on Sunday which led to reminders for the first team to stay inside and follow government guidelines.

The football authorities have come together, including UEFA, FIFA and the European Club Association (ECA), to state they aim to complete the domestic and European season by June 30.

This has led to the suspension of Euro 2020 until 2021 and the Premier League is hoping to return on April 3. However, the situation could change should the spread of the virus continue.

“Of course we still don’t know when competitive football will restart, but it isn’t worth worrying about that too much at the moment,” Lampard said.

“We all miss football, but right now it’s about acting responsibly and in the best interests of society. I am sure I wasn’t the only one who found myself in a strange place with no sport this weekend, but ultimately none of that matters when we consider the bigger picture.”

Chelsea’s office staff are working from home wherever possible, which is also in line with the current UK government advice.

The Blues have reached out to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) to offer assistance and have agreed to offer the Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge for medical staff treating the general public.

Roman Abramovich has agreed to finance the costs of accommodation for NHS staff who are working late amid the health crisis, with chairman Bruce Buck having worked out the details.

Chelsea have also limited the activity of their charity arm the Chelsea Foundation. The ‘difficult decision’ has been made due to restrictions on large-scale gatherings, while safeguarding the spread of the virus to the elderly and schools has been part of the reasoning.

In addition, the Chelsea Megastore, Frankie’s, the Tea Bar, Under the Bridge and various other commercial sites have been closed.

The decision has been described as precautionary and it hasn’t been made because any member of staff has caught the virus. Many of the activities will now be moved to an online platform.

Furthermore, the Blues continue to operate in a business sense and are close to agreeing on a new contract for their talented youngster Tino Anjorin although further uncertainty around football schedules is expected to lead to caution in the transfer market.

Barca have been asking about me since last summer – Ben Yedder

The Monaco striker claims he was targeted by the Blaugrana long before he completed a move to Stade Louis II from Sevilla

Wissam Ben Yedder has revealed he came very close to joining Barcelona in the January transfer window, having been on the club’s radar since the end of last season.

Ben Yedder was one of the most sought after talents in Europe last summer, after a stellar 2018-19 campaign with Sevilla which saw him post career-best numbers for goals and assists.

Manchester United were among those being heavily linked with the Frenchman, but he ultimately ended up signing a five-year deal with Monaco in August.

The 29-year-old says Barca were also enquiring over his availability before he decided to return to his homeland, and they re-ignited their interest when the market reopened at the turn of the year.

Ben Yedder has admitted a transfer “could have been done”, but he wasn’t fazed when a deal failed to materialise and managed to remain fully focused on his duties at Monaco.

“For starters, these are things that could have happened long before,” the ex-Sevilla star told Onze Mondial.

“Last summer, for example. They [Barca] took information about me several times. This winter, it could have been done. It didn’t happen, that’s how it was, that it shouldn’t be done.

“It shows that I am doing a good job. I stayed professional and focused on my performances with Monaco. When Barca arrived, I took it as a plus, as a bonus.”

Monaco were flirting with relegation from Ligue 1 before Ben Yedder’s arrival, but the mercurial forward has helped inspire a turnaround in fortunes for the club over the past eight months.

He has contributed 18 goals and four assists to Les Monegasques’ cause in the French top flight this season, helping them climb back into the top half of the table and within sight of the European places.

Unfortunately, Ben Yedder and Monaco’s progress has been stalled by the coronavirus crisis, which has seen all major football leagues on the continent shut down indefinitely.

France has been one of the worst affected areas in Europe, which was named as the new epicentre of the outbreak by the World Health Organisation last week.

Over 9000 people have tested positive in France to date, with 264 deaths recorded and another 931 people reportedly in serious condition.

It is not yet known whether the current football season will be able to resume, but the European Championships have been pushed back to 2021 to give clubs the best chance of completing their respective schedules.

Government Offers Financial Assistance Package Of $82 Billion For Coronavirus Crisis

The federal government is rolling out a sweeping economic package worth $82 billion to help Canadian workers and businesses recover from the shock of the growing COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Ottawa will spend $27 billion in direct support for Canadians and $55 billion in tax deferrals, which, he said, represents more than three per cent of Canada’s GDP.

“In these extraordinary times, our government is taking extraordinary measures,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa Wednesday.

“No matter where you live, what you do, or who you are, you will get the support you need during this time. In Canada, public health should never hinge on financial considerations,” he said.

Federal and provincial governments are urging Canadians to stay home and practice social distancing, staying two arms’ length away from individuals at all times, to help limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. As of noon Wednesday, there were more than 200,000 cases of COVID-19 worldwide and 8,000 deaths. In Canada, there were 598 confirmed cases and eight deaths.

Wednesday’s spending announcement is on top of the $1 billion-package the Trudeau government announced last week to support provinces and territories responding to the crisis, as well as $10 billion in credit support for businesses.

For those who are stuck at home in self-isolation and who have lost their jobs, the government will provide:

  • An Emergency Care Benefit of up to $900 bi-weekly for up to 15 weeks for workers who do not have access to paid sick leave or employment insurance. This will include: the self-employed, who are sick, quarantined or who have been directed to self-isolate; those taking care of a family member who is sick with COVID-19, such as an elderly parent or other sick dependents; EI-eligible and non EI-eligible working parents who must stay home without pay to care for their children.
  • An Emergency Support Benefit of up to $5 billion to support laid-off workers who are not eligible for EI.
  • An increase in the Canada Child Benefit payments worth an extra $2 billion in support.
  • A $5.5 billion top up to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit for low and modest incomes Canadians.

The government will waive the requirement for a medical certificate to access EI sickness benefits and, as announced last week, will also waive the mandatory one-week waiting period for EI sickness benefits for those directed to self-isolate.

Other measures to help ease financial burdens during the coronavirus crisis include:

  • Extending the personal income tax filing deadline to June 1, and pushing payments back until Sept. 1.
  • Helping banks defer mortgage payments for homeowners.
  • Freezing Canada Student Loan payments for six months.
  • Reducing minimum withdrawals from Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs) by 25 per cent for 2020, due to the volatile nature of the market.

Ottawa is also spending $305 million to address needs in Indigenous communities, giving up to $50 million to women’s shelters and sexual assault centres to increase capacity and prevent outbreaks in their facilities, and boosting its homeless programs by $157 million.

Businesses will also be given direct assistance:

  • Small businesses will be provided a 10-per-cent wage subsidy for 90 days, a measure worth up to $1,375 per employee and $25,000 per businesses, in order to keep staff on the payroll.
  • Businesses will also be able to defer 2019 income tax payments until Sept. 1.

The federal government had already announced it is providing $10 billion to businesses through the Business Development Bank of Canada and Export Development Canada to ensure they have enough capital. It said it will also augment credit available to farmers through Farm Credit Canada.

The prime minister said direct payments to Canadians would likely take a “few weeks” to get out the door, especially for those who do not qualify for EI.

This is the first wave of assistance, Trudeau said. “Our government is prepared to do more.”

The prime minister and Finance Minister Bill Morneau, who spoke to reporters at a later press conference in Ottawa, were both questioned about why the federal government had not chosen to send cash directly to Canadians, as the White House plans to do. Reporters noted that there were very limited measures for seniors, who are being told not to work and to stay at home, and there were no measures for the self-employed who do not have children and who are not sick.

“We are trying to monitor the situation, if there is something specific that is required, then we will step up,” Morneau said in French.

‘We have the fiscal room’: Trudeau

The prime minister also denied that implementing the measures means that a recession is inevitable, saying the focus right now is on making sure Canadians who are seeing their income or revenue dry up have the money to support their families.

While the closure of businesses and other slowdowns will have an economic impact, Trudeau said, the fundamentals of the economy remain strong.

“We have the fiscal room to do this because of prudent decision-making over the past five years. We will be able to ensure that our economy gets back up to speed very quickly.”

Morneau, likewise, said that while his job is to maintain Canada’s fiscal track in ordinary circumstances, the COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily upended that.

Morneau said his “only job” as finance minister right now is to “make sure that Canadians can keep food in the fridge and that they can keep a roof over their heads, that they can afford the medicine they need.”

Though the House of Commons suspended business last week, Trudeau said opposition parties are collaborating and he expects the measures to pass quickly.

Only 20 MPs and the Speaker of the House of Commons are required to pass the emergency measures in the chamber. Liberal House Leader Pablo Rodriguez said Parliament could be recalled as early as next week and they were looking at asking MPs who wouldn’t need to travel by plane to drive to Ottawa.

Loonie Drops To Lowest Level In 17 Years As Oil Prices Crash Again

The Canadian dollar fell to its lowest levels since 2003 on Wednesday amid yet another oil market rout that left Canadian oil prices near their lowest levels ever.

The North American benchmark oil price fell more than 16 per cent, to just above US$22 per barrel, but Canadian crude, which typically sells at a discount, was trading at barely above US$9 a barrel. That matches the lowest price ever recorded for Western Canadian Select oil.

The loonie, which tends to move with oil prices, fell as low 68.3 cents U.S. in Wednesday morning trading, and closed the day at 69 cents. With the exception of a few days in 2016, it hasn’t traded this low since the spring of 2003.

Canadian oil had been trading at around US$35 per barrel last month, before the COVID-19 outbreak severely reduced demand for fuel, causing oil prices to fall into a tailspin.

The Toronto Stock Exchange Composite Index closed down 7.6 per cent at 11,721.42, having hit its lowest intraday level since July 2012. The index has fallen about 35 per cent from its Feb. 28 peak.

“Today feels like the capitulation everyone was waiting for,” said Greg Taylor, portfolio manager at Purpose Investments. “The headlines will get worse but markets are now pricing in a major global recession.”

Wall Street resumed a steep slide while bond markets rushed to price in the sheer scale of government support programs and handouts announced over the past 24 hours, all aimed at softening the economic shock of the virus.

The market dive came as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an $82-billion stimulus package on Wednesday, including $27 billion in direct aid to households and businesses, and $55 billion in deferred taxes.

“We expect the Bank of Canada to further reduce the target interest rate, taking it down in the coming days or weeks to 0.25 per cent, the low of the last recession,” said Royce Mendes, senior economist at CIBC Capital Markets.

The United States and Canada agreed to close the border between the two countries to non-essential travel.

Canadian Gun Sales Spike Amid Fears Of COVID-19, Tougher Firearms Laws

TORONTO ― The COVID-19 outbreak coupled with fears about more restrictive gun legislation has fuelled a spike in firearm and ammunition sales, several dealers said this week.

Buyers, they say, are stocking up while they can ― a development that has alarmed gun-control advocates.

“We are seeing a surge in sales,″ said Ross Faulkner, owner of The Gun Dealer in McAdam, N.B., which bills itself Atlantic Canada’s largest firearms store. “When things get tough, it’s certainly a feeling of security, especially when you’re dealing with uncertain times like we’re dealing with now.”

Earlier on HuffPost: Victims of Toronto mass shooting sue gunmaker Smith & Wesson. Story continues below.

The result, said Wes Winkel, head of the Canadian Sporting Arms and Ammunition Association, has been an “extreme surge″ in domestic sales. Part of it relates to concerns about being able to get permits as government offices close, as well as overall supply fears.

“In no product in our supply chain does it take longer to replenish than in firearms and ammunition,” said Winkel, whose association represents retailers, distributors and manufacturers. “People know if they don’t get stuff and the supply chain is being depleted, they’re going to run out quickly.”

Winkel said some people in more remote areas of Canada are worried about coronavirus-related disruptions in food supplies. As long as they have guns and ammo, he said, they can always harvest their own food.

Nicolas Johnson, a Toronto-based gun-rights activist, said a blog post he wrote in July 2018 on how to buy a handgun legally has become his most-read in the past week.

“In times of uncertainty, you focus on the basics like water, food and self-protection,” Johnson said. “It’s easy to imagine how things can deteriorate.”

The Liberal government, to the chagrin of the gun-rights lobby, has already taken steps to tighten laws. Its platform during last fall’s election called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and allowing municipalities to ban handguns, among other restrictions.

The group Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns said the development showed the urgent need for the government to enact tougher gun measures immediately.

“Especially in a moment when we are all focused on evidence-base preventative public health care, increasing access to guns ― a public health risk ― is dangerous,″ the group said.

Fears of shortages

In Gormley, Ont., Target Sports Canada said possible shortages are on people’s minds.

“We’re not quite at the toilet paper stage but people are buying a little more than normal,” said Julie Howes, manager at Target Sports. “We don’t have lineups or anything out the door.”

Some Canadian stores have opted to close in light of the virus, shifting to sales online.

Faulkner said he was keeping his store open for now, but employees have been taking extra precautions, such as cleaning counters, wearing gloves and washing hands more often.

“It’s certainly different times right now,″ Faulkner said. “I’ve been in business for 43 years and it’s the first time that my counter is lined with hand sanitizer.”

Trump Confirms Canada-U.S. Border Will Temporarily Close Due To Coronavirus Crisis

OTTAWA — Canada and the United States will close the border to non-essential travel to help slow the spread of COVID-19, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Wednesday.

Trump made the announcement in a tweet, confirming a CNN report that U.S. and Canadian officials are working on a deal that would apply new restrictions to the border, but ensure that business and trade can continue.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the news moments later in a news conference outside his Ottawa home, where he’s been in self-isolation since his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from London, U.K. last week.

“Travellers will no longer be permitted to cross the border for recreation and tourism,” Trudeau said, adding that both Canadians and Americans are encouraged to stay home.

“We’re telling our citizens not to visit their neighbours if they don’t absolutely have to. This collaborative and reciprocal measure is an extension of that prudent approach.”

Essential travel will be permitted to preserve supply chains between the two countries, Trudeau said. Trucking, for example, is considered essential.

“These supply chains ensure that food, fuel, and life-saving medicines reach people on both sides of the border,” the prime minister said.

He did not specify how long the temporary border closure will last. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland later told reporters that further details on when and how long the temporary border rules will be in place will be finalized in “hours or days.”

“To anyone thinking of making a tourist or recreational trip across the Canadian-U.S. border, please don’t do it. It’s not good for your neighbours,” she said.

Significant border changes in 72 hours

The extraordinary move comes two days after Trudeau announced that U.S. citizens would be exempt from Canada’s closure of its borders to foreign travellers, in an effort to stem travel-related community transmission of the novel coronavirus.

Trudeau faced criticism of the American exemption over concerns about community transmission of the virus in light of a string of new COVID-19 diagnosed in Ontario with links to U.S. travel.

Speaking to White House reporters Wednesday, the U.S. president said his relationship with Trudeau, and between their two countries, is “very good.” Trump called the novel coronavirus an “invisible enemy.”

On Monday, the prime minister defended allowing Americans to continue to cross the border, saying that Canada puts the U.S. in a “separate category than the rest of the world” because of the integrated nature of the countries’ economies.

Trump said there was no “tipping point” in the last 72 hours that prompted the new, stricter border measures. “It’s just that we want to isolate from the same point. We don’t want people coming into contact because that’s the way we’re going to win this war. That is so important.”

The president reaffirmed the temporary border closures, except for the movement of essential supply chains, won’t affect trade. “It’s just something we thought would be good for both countries,” he said.

Before all federal parties agreed to suspend Parliament Friday, the new North American Free Trade Agreement was adopted and passed at third reading in the House of Commons before it was fast-tracked through the Senate, becoming law by the end of the day.

Earlier, Freeland echoed that nearly 200,000 people cross the land border on a daily basis, calling it a “lifeline” for both Canadians and Americans.

“We get our groceries thanks to truckers who drive back and forth across that border,” she told reporters Tuesday. “Very urgently needed medical supplies and medicines go back and forth across that border.”

It’s significant the agreement to close the border was arrived at mutually between the U.S. and Canada, according to Wilson Center Canada Institute Director Christopher Sands.

“That was not the approach taken by the United States with China nor Europe, and it is the fruit of nearly two decades of efforts by the United States and Canada after the Sept. 11 attacks to adopt a shared border management approach that is data-driven utilizing risk management to allocate personnel and technology to keep the border open to legitimate trade and travelers in an emergency.”

U.S. citizens no exception to Canadian 14-day quarantine

The prime minister and cabinet ministers have repeatedly urged Canadians abroad to return home while commercial flights are still available.

Canadians who are impacted by the pandemic and are unable to return home are eligible for a $5,000 emergency repayable loan. Global Affairs Canada says the money is intended to help pay for “life-sustaining needs while they work toward their return.”

Stricter travel rules were introduced this week in effort to reduce the number of travel-related confirmed COVID-19 cases in Canada.

COVID-19 is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The first cluster of cases originated in Wuhan, China in late 2019.

Despite that city’s large-scale effort to lock down its more than 11 million residents to contain the virus, it has now spread to more than 160 countries.

All international flights into Canada are now being redirected to four international airports in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. Domestic flights are not impacted. Flights between the Caribbean, Mexico, the U.S., and St. Pierre-et-Miquelon are also not affected by the new rules.

Most foreign nationals are now barred entry into Canada during the pandemic. Airline crew, diplomats, and immediate family members of Canadian citizens are currently exempt from the new restrictions. Anyone arriving from a foreign location, including the U.S., is expected to self-isolate for 14 days.

A U.S. state department spokesperson said Wednesday that Americans “showing no virus symptoms will continue to be able to travel to Canada.”

“Regardless of citizenship, no travelers exhibiting symptoms will be allowed to enter Canada,” the state department spokesperson said. “U.S. flights destined for Canada will still be routed to their original destinations, but U.S. citizen passengers will be subject to screening, as are all other travellers.”

In Italy, where inadequate early measures led to an explosion in cases, one doctor likened the outbreak in that country to a “tsunami that has overwhelmed us.”

There are now more than 201,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus across the world, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The virus has been linked to more than 7,400 deaths globally.

Its Not Me Its You.

Allez Lily, on a compris ton petit jeu…
