Liverpool target Werner may stay at RB Leipzig amid coronavirus chaos, says sporting director

The Germany international may not get his expected move this summer amid the upheaval caused by the pandemic

Timo Werner could stay at RB Leipzig next season amid the worldwide chaos caused by the coronavirus, according to the Bundesliga club’s sporting director, Markus Krosche.

The Germany international centre-forward scored 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga matches this season, before the German top flight was suspended due to the virus.

Werner’s electric form has attracted interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, and the 24-year-old has indicated he is keen on a move to the Premier League.

However, Krosche has suggested the disruption caused to world football, combined with the fact Werner has a contract with Leipzig until 2023, could force the forward to stay put this summer.

He told Sport1: “It is clear that Timo has attracted interest from other clubs for his great performances with his goals and assists.

“England has the same problems as we do. The crisis affects not just one league, it has a global impact, and we cannot say whether things will be the same in six months.”

On whether that means Werner could stay at Leipzig, Krosche said: “Everything is possible.

“We do not know how the transfer market is developing. We are looking into a very foggy glass ball. We do not know what our resources are and what the other clubs have in terms of opportunities.”

Krosche also admitted Leipzig’s other transfer plans have also been disrupted.

He said Leipzig had wanted to make loan signings Angelino from Manchester City, and Roma forward Patrick Schick, permanent, but the current situation makes any deals uncertain.

According to Sport1, left-back Angelino has a purchase option of €30 million (£28m/$32m), while Schick has a €29m clause (£27m/$31m).

Krosche said: “As of today, I definitely cannot confirm these clauses. That’s the way it is!

“We don’t know how certain things develop. In four or five weeks we might have more leeway..”

Werner has previously said he feels he would be a “good fit” at Liverpool, and called Reds manager Jurgen Klopp the “best coach in the world.”

“Our game in London has brought Liverpool [links] to the media,” he said earlier this month, after Leipzig’s Champions League round-of-16 first-leg victory over Tottenham.

“They have Klopp, the best coach in the world who is German. There are a lot of things that would suggest that my playing style might be a good fit.”

‘Klopp is an unbelievable boss in every way’ – Alexander-Arnold hails Liverpool’s leader

The Reds defender has paid tribute to the German tactician masterminding more trophy bids with the Premier League leaders

Jurgen Klopp is an “unbelievable” manager, admits Trent Alexander-Arnold, with “everything” about the Liverpool boss screaming class.

The highly-rated German tactician has been part of the fold at Anfield since October 2015.

His ‘heavy metal’ brand of football has carried the Reds to the top of domestic, continental and global games.

It took some time for his methods to deliver tangible reward, with further final heartache suffered before getting over the line in the 2019 Champions League final.

Records have been sent tumbling by Liverpool in the current campaign, as they wait on a first league title in 30 years.

Alexander-Arnold admits Klopp has been crucial to the progress made on Merseyside, with the 52-year-old cementing a standing as one of the very best in the business.

“Unbelievable,” Alexander-Arnold told GQ when asked for his take on Klopp.

“Just everything about him in every way. His man management, as a person, as a manager. Just unbelievable.”

Quizzed on whether the Liverpool coach is the same behind the scenes as he is in the public eye – with his energetic displays on the touchline becoming the stuff of legend – Alexander-Arnold added: “He’s the same person, because I feel as though in those interviews, when you see him on the camera, you can see that he’s a loving person.

“You can see that he’s someone who cares about the people around him. He cares about his family, he cares about his players, he cares about his staff. He treats everyone as equals. He treats the captain the same as he would a young player.

“People probably have a conception of him as maybe being very emotional, heart on the sleeve. Which he is to an extent, but he knows how to control it in ways that are beneficial to everyone around him.

“He knows what needs to be said and what tone it needs to be said in, at the right time.”

Liverpool entered a coronavirus-enforced break from competitive action sat 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with Klopp’s men now hoping that a season which has promised so much can be played to a finish whenever current restrictions are lifted.

Barkley can drive Chelsea on to win trophies just like Lampard did – Cole

A former Blue believes the England international is capable of following in his manager’s footsteps at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea’s Ross Barkley has been described as a “top, top player” by Joe Cole, who thinks the midfielder can help drive the club towards silverware in the same way Frank Lampard did in his heyday.

After overcoming a slow start to the 2019-20 campaign amid injury issues, Barkley has emerged as a key figure in the Blues’ starting line-up as they chase down a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old featured in seven of Chelsea’s last eight games before the season was called to a temporary halt due to the coronavirus outbreak, with his most impressive display coming in a 2-0 FA Cup fifth-round win over Liverpool on March 3.

Lampard has been rewarded for placing his faith in Barkley, who appears to have rediscovered his best form while operating in a three-man midfield alongside the likes of Billy Gilmour, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount.

Cole has expressed his belief that Barkley has all the attributes to emulate the current Chelsea manager’s achievements at Stamford Bridge, while tipping him to remain at the club for “many, many years”.

“Ross has improved. He is a top player. I’m a big fan of Ross Barkley. Always have been,” the ex-Blues winger told the Daily Star .

“He’s been a bit less spoken about because of Jack Grealish and James Maddison and Mason Mount. But he’s done a terrific job at Chelsea.

“The last two games, against Liverpool and Everton, he was brilliant. Absolutely fantastic.

“I’ve always thought he was a top player and I think he’ll be at Chelsea for many, many years.

“Now the challenge for Ross is can he keep doing that, can he be that player who drives Chelsea on to win trophies, like his manager was? I think he can.”

Cole went on to discuss comparisons between himself and Barkley, opening up on how he developed under Jose Mourinho’s stewardship before backing the England international to maintain his own upward trajectory in the coming seasons.

“I’m pleased if people can see similarities between him and me because I’m a big fan. I think I just developed at Chelsea,” said Cole.

“It wasn’t just Jose. He’s a fantastic manager. But I was playing with better players. More expectation. I grew into my body a bit. And winning trophies breeds confidence.

“I like everything about Ross. Technically, he’s spot on. The mental aspect of the game, he’s getting better and better. Tactically he is improving all the time.

“I just think he’s a top, top player for Chelsea and England. As football evolves, players like him are getting more and more valued. He’s a fantastic player.”

Chelsea boast a three-point lead over their rivals in the race for the final Champions League after 29 fixtures, with Lampard taking in his first season as a Premier League manager.

A club legend has been able to maximise the output of the squad at his disposal without dipping into the transfer market, while bringing a number of academy stars through to the first-team fold.

“I can understand people didn’t think he had much experience at the start of the job but I was never in any doubt he’d be a top manager,” Cole said of Lampard’s credentials.

“I think he’s a smart guy, Frank. There’s no doubt in my mind he will go on to be one of the best managers we’ve ever produced. He’s so driven.

“Chelsea must be absolutely buzzing at what he’s done for the club. The club’s cohesive, it’s working well. Systems are in place. They’re performing well.

“He’s blooded some young players and put some value on the bottom line of the club. I think he’s done a tremendous job.”

Real Madrid become FIFA 20 La Liga champions thanks to Asensio

The Los Blancos representative beat his Leganes counterpart in the tournament final, raising over €140,000 in the process

Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio won the La Liga FIFA 20 charity challenge, helping raise funds for the fight against coronavirus.

While COVID-19 pandemic has forced sports to stop around the world, La Liga continued to go ahead over the weekend, albeit virtually.

A single player was invited by Spanish video game streamer Ibai Llanos to represent their team in a 20-club FIFA 20 tournament.

Asensio – who has been sidelined for the entire 2019-20 season due to a serious knee injury – swapped the pitch for PlayStation.

The 24-year-old Spain international’s time away from the football ground paid dividends after beating Leganes’ Aitor Ruibal 4-2 in Sunday’s final.

Over €140,000 was also raised, with all proceeds going to UNICEF as the world struggles to contain the coronavirus outbreak, which has claimed more than 14,500 lives.

“It has been a spectacular tournament,” Asensio wrote via Twitter. “The goal was to have a good time, laugh, entertain ourselves in these difficult times for everyone, and donate in the fight against COVID-19. And we have succeeded.

“Congratulations @IbaiLlanos and all who have made it possible.”

Real Madrid have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic with former president Lorenzo Sanz passing away on Saturday after contracting the illness.

The entire Los Blancos club has been placed into isolation after one of their basketball players tested positive to the virus earlier this month.

Players have had to find ways to keep themselves busy in isolation, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois participating in a virtual Formula One Grand Prix.

The Belgian star was joined by some current F1 stars including Williams’ Nicholas Latifi and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Former F1 drivers Nico Hulkenberg, Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Gutierrez, as well as Ferrari Driver Academy members Robert Shwartzman and Dino Beganovic also took part.

While midfielder Brahim Diaz has been brushing up on his skills at online game Fortnite, insisting he had become a ‘pro’ outside of the time spent training in his home.

“I train, I play with my family and then I have my free time, which nobody can take away from me,” was quoted by Marca.

Coronavirus In Condos: What Residents Should Know About COVID-19

The messaging from Canada’s public health officials to fight the spread of COVID-19 is clear: Stay home if you’re unwell.

But for condo residents, that raises some questions. Given that there can be hundreds of dwellers in a condo building, the idea of social distancing can be tougher than a homeowner.

Policies specific to COVID-19 will vary condo board to condo board but there are some changes in the video above that residents should come to expect.

Panic Buying, Lockdowns May Drive World Food Inflation, Economists, FAO Warn

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ― Lockdowns and panic food buying due to the coronavirus pandemic could ignite world food inflation even though there are ample supplies of staple grains and oilseeds in key exporting nations, a senior economist at FAO and agricultural analysts said.

The world’s richest nations poured unprecedented aid into the global economy as coronavirus cases ballooned across Europe and the United States, with the number of deaths in Italy outstripping those in mainland China, where the virus originated.

With over 270,000 infections and more than 11,000 deaths, the epidemic has stunned the world and drawn comparisons with periods such as World War Two and the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

“All you need is panic buying from big importers such as millers or governments to create a crisis,” said Abdolreza Abbassian, chief economist at the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

“It is not a supply issue, but it is a behavioural change over food security,” he told Reuters by phone from Rome, the FAO headquarters. “What if bulk buyers think they can’t get wheat or rice shipments in May or June? That is what could lead to a global food supply crisis.”

Consumers across the world from Singapore to the United States have queued at super markets in recent weeks to stock up on items ranging from rice and hand sanitizers to toilet paper.

The global benchmark Chicago wheat futures rose more than 6 per cent this week, the biggest weekly gain in nine months, while rice prices in Thailand, the world’s 2nd largest exporter of the grain, have climbed to the highest since August 2013.

France’s grain industry is scrambling to find enough trucks and staff to keep factories and ports running as the panic buying of pasta and flour coincides with a surge in wheat exports.

Restrictions imposed by some European Union countries at their borders with other member states in response to the pandemic are also disrupting food supplies, representatives of the industry and farmers said.

However, global wheat stocks at the end of the crop marketing year in June are projected to rise to 287.14 million tonnes, up from 277.57 million tonnes a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates.

World rice stocks are projected at 182.3 million tonnes as compared with 175.3 million tonnes a year ago.

Food in the right place

Logistics are likely to be a major global issue, analysts said.

“There is about 140 million tonnes of corn that goes in ethanol in the United States and some of that can used for food as it won’t be needed for fuel, given the drop in oil prices,” said Ole Houe, director of advisory services at brokerage IKON Commodities

“The concern is having food at the right time in the right place.”

Asian buyers were inactive this week with uncertainty looming in the market.

“We are not sure about the demand. What it is going to look like in June or July?” said one Singapore-based purchasing manager at a flour milling company that has operations across Southeast Asia. “Restaurant business is down, and as a result demand is a bit soft right now.”

Asian wheat importers, including the region’s top importer Indonesia, have been taking a bulk of the cargoes from the Black Sea region amid a global oversupply.

Oil exporting nations in the Middle East, which are also net grain importers, are likely to feel more financial pain with crude losing more than 60% of its value this year.

“Net oil exporters’ capacity to buy grains has dropped given the fall in oil prices and depreciation in currencies,” said FAO’s Abbassian.

“There will be less capacity to take policy actions to boost economies.”

Click Here: West Coast Eagles Guernsey
