Kardashian, Jenner Family Thank ICE for Arresting Illegal Alien Who Broke into Their Home

Members of the Kardashian and Jenner family are thanking the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for arresting an illegal alien who has twice broken into Kendall Jenner’s home.

“We are extremely appreciative of the hard work by the Los Angeles Police Department and ICE, whose swift response and professionalism led to this man’s apprehension. His actions have not only had a severe impact on Kendall’s life but the entire family’s sense of security, causing us to fear for Kendall’s safety as well as our own,” the family said in a statement to the press.

“Knowing this individual is in custody gives us peace of mind,” the joint message from the Kardashian and Jenner families concluded.

The statement came on the heels of the arrest of John Ford, 38, a Canadian who was convicted twice of breaking into 23-year-old model Kendall Jenner’s Los Angeles home.

ICE apprehended him in a hotel parking lot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, several days ago. Ford was apprehended twice before at Jenner’s home in the Mulholland Estates gated community of Los Angeles. In October of last year, he was caught sneaking around by Jenner’s pool.

Ford was convicted on charges of misdemeanor trespassing.

Jack P. Staton, special agent in charge of El Paso office of ICE’s Homeland Security Operations, said in a statement that Ford’s arrest may have “prevented a violent crime.”

“Our special agents acted quickly on this tip to ensure that this obsessive behavior didn’t escalate to become a tragedy,” Staton said.

“Following his arrest,” ICE reported, “Ford was processed and served with a notice to appear (NTA) before a federal immigration judge; he remains in ICE custody in El Paso, Texas, awaiting disposition of his immigration case.”

Alyssa Milano Calls for Boycott of Georgia After Senate Approval of ‘Heartbeat’ Abortion Ban

Actress Alyssa Milano called for Hollywood film companies to boycott the state of Georgia after its Senate passed a measure that would ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected.

“There are over 20 productions shooting in GA & the state just voted to strip women of their bodily autonomy,” Alyssa Milano, star of Netflix’s Insatiable, tweeted Friday. “Hollywood! We should stop feeding GA economy.”

According to Fox News, Georgia is considered the “number one filming location in the world,” Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office’s deputy commissioner reported last week.

The bill would ban abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, at about the sixth or seventh week of pregnancy.

“The State Senate affirmed Georgia’s commitment to life and the rights of the innocent unborn,” said Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican.

Earlier in March, Alyssa Milano, who also starred in Charmed, was severely criticized for calling herself a disabled, transgender person of color in a social media post on International Women’s Day.

In January, the actress also claimed that supporters of President Donald Trump identified with “white supremacy,” and then attempted to clarify that statement as well.

“Let me be clear: I’m not saying everyone who voted for Trump is a racist,” Milano said. “I’m saying that everyone who proudly wears the red hat identifies with an ideology of white supremacy and misogyny. Everyone who proudly wears those hats gives a tacit endorsement for the hatred and the violence we’ve seen these past few years.”

Brussels puts Warsaw on path to sanctions over rule of law

The European Commission decided Wednesday to put Poland on a path that could ultimately lead to the suspension of its EU voting rights over concerns about the rule of law.

The Commission’s move was the first time it had ever triggered the so-called Article 7 process, designed to ensure member countries stick to the bloc’s core values.

The chances of Poland actually being disenfranchised are slim, as all other EU member countries would need to agree and Hungary, for one, has already said it would veto such a step. But Brussels’ decision underscores the depth of concern in the European political mainstream about an overhaul of the legal system by Poland’s ruling nationalist-conservative PiS party. Critics say the revamp severely undermines judicial independence.

Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said the EU’s executive had acted “with a heavy heart.”

“But the facts leave us no choice,” he said.

In response to the Commission’s decision, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki defended the government’s legal reforms, saying they were “deeply needed.”

“Poland is as devoted to the rule of law as the rest of the EU,” he said on Twitter. “The dialogue between the Commission and Warsaw needs to be both open and honest. I believe that Poland’s sovereignty and the idea of United Europe can be reconciled.”

Other Polish officials struck a more defiant tone.

“The only change this decision makes is that now we must effectively finalize what we have begun — all the way to the very end,” said Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. “This is in order for Poland to be respected and this will be guaranteed to us by the rule of law.”

In the latest move to overhaul the legal system, Polish President Andrzej Duda is expected in the coming days to sign into law new measures passed by parliament that would permit the dismissal of many of the country’s Supreme Court judges by lowering their statutory retirement age. Duda confirmed on Wednesday evening that he would go ahead and sign the laws despite Brussels’ move.

Timmermans said various reforms undertaken by PiS effectively removed the separation of powers between the executive and the judiciary.

“We do not dispute the right of a government, a nation, to reform its judiciary,” Timmermans told reporters in Brussels. “But if you reform the judiciary you need to abide by your own constitution and EU law.”

‘Situation deteriorated’

Timmermans noted the Commission had been close in July to triggering Article 7, a mechanism in the EU treaties designed to uphold values such as democracy and the rule of law.

“The situation since then has not improved but deteriorated,” said Timmermans, who declared that extensive efforts to engage in dialogue with Warsaw had failed to produce results.

“After two years, the Commission can only conclude that there is now a clear risk of a serious breach of the rule of law,” he said.

Warsaw has argued its changes are necessary to root out corruption and modernize a legal system that has elements left over from communism.

Timmermans said the Commission was ready to reconsider its decision if the Polish government implemented changes to the rule of law recommended by Brussels in the coming months.

Outlining the formal steps it would take, the Commission said in a statement it would propose that the European Council “find that there is a clear risk of a serious breach of the rule of law” in Poland.

It also issued a fourth recommendation on the rule of law to Warsaw “setting out clearly the steps that the Polish authorities can take to remedy the current situation.” The recommendation includes amending the Supreme Court law and not applying “a lowered retirement age to current judges.”

Finally, the Commission will decide to take a step further in an ongoing infringement procedure — the measure it undertakes when it believes a country is in breach of EU law — by referring Warsaw to the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The Article 7 process is sometimes dubbed the EU’s “nuclear option” as it can lead to the most serious democratic sanction the bloc can impose on a member country — the suspension of its right to vote in EU bodies. But Timmermans played down that description. The first step of the process, he said, meant asking the European Council and European Parliament to consider their own views of the situation in Poland.

However, should the other EU institutions agree with the Commission’s assessment — and Warsaw and Brussels fail to find a way to resolve their dispute — then the process could move closer to a vote among member countries on whether to suspend Poland’s EU voting rights.

In the most immediate sense, the action against Poland is a loud, public rebuke and a warning to Warsaw that patience has run out in Brussels. While the need for unanimity in the Council makes it unlikely Poland would ever face the most severe punishment, the EU has other arrows in its quiver.

Debate is already underway over the shape of the bloc’s next long-term budget plan, and with the U.K.’s departure creating a big hole, officials are already confronting the need for cuts. Budget Commissioner Günther Oettinger has already called for a new system that would impose tougher “conditionality” on countries like Poland, which are net recipients of EU structural funds.

The idea is that countries that do a better job at implementing EU recommendations on structural reforms would benefit from more funding. And while no fiscal policy could be directed solely at Poland, the budget debate is a reminder that Warsaw has been a major beneficiary of EU spending programs and potentially has much to lose.

UK responds to Barnier’s transition demands

LONDON — U.K. Brexit Secretary David Davis will this morning formally publish his response to Michel Barnier’s draft rules covering the proposed “transition period” after Brexit, according to a British official familiar with the situation.

Davis’ response was sent to the European Commission on Tuesday. It sets out the U.K. government’s position on the draft legal text drawn up by Brussels for the period after March 29, 2019, when Britain has left the bloc but not yet put in place new arrangements to govern the future relationship between the two sides.

According to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the U.K.’s response calls for a new mechanism to protect Britain from “harm” caused by new EU rules and regulations introduced during this transition phase, when it will continue to enjoy the same access to the European single market but without any say over the rules governing it.

The proposal will likely be welcomed by Euroskeptics in the Conservative Party ahead of a meeting of Theresa May’s Brexit “war Cabinet” at Chequers on Thursday, when they are expected to agree on a negotiating position on the U.K.’s future relationship with the bloc.

However, in an omission likely to raise backbench Tory eyebrows, Davis will not formally reject the Commission’s proposal to extend the cut-off date for new EU migrants arriving in Britain to accrue full EU freedom of movement rights — a proposal that caught the U.K. by surprise when Barnier published it earlier this month. The U.K. will also not challenge in writing the EU’s proposed end date of December 31, 2020 for the transition, according to the official, who said it was “unlikely to be contentious.”

Theresa May has repeatedly insisted EU citizens who arrive after Brexit must be treated differently to those who moved when the U.K. was still a member of the EU.

“On FOM [freedom of movement] we are not conceding it but we are also not putting a roadblock in the way at the outset,” the senior U.K. official said. “It will be the subject of tough negotiations.”

The U.K.’s response to Barnier’s transition proposals kickstarts a month-long negotiation between Brussels and London to nail down the specifics of the transition period before the European Council on March 22.

Hollywood Actresses Rally for Migrants at Tijuana Shelters

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Actress America Ferrera led a small group of artists on a migrant shelter tour in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, across from San Diego, over the weekend. They dressed in casual clothes, with little to no makeup. They talked with immigration lawyers and shelter managers. They colored pictures with children. And they listened to harrowing tales of long treks through Mexico and beyond in hopes of starting a new life in the U.S.

Those aspirations have become tougher in recent months as U.S. border agents process only a handful of asylum requests a day, creating backlogs and limited space at shelters in Mexican border towns. Most shelters can accommodate only a few dozen migrants at a time, while thousands of Central Americans have made the arduous journey north, fleeing violence and poverty.

Apprehensions by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol are higher than they have been in a decade.

Many of these migrants are from Honduras, like Ferrera’s parents.

“It is easy for me to look at these human beings and see myself,” the actress, who became a household name after her title role in the TV show “Ugly Betty,” said in a telephone interview Sunday. “This could very easily have been my reality in this lifetime.”

Ferrera has spoken out for migrants for years. But she said the urge to speak louder intensified after images of migrant children being separated from their parents by U.S. officials emerged last year.

She remembers holding her newborn at the time and trying to imagine the plight of the migrants: “How dire would my situation have to be to grab this brand new child and walk for a month, with no access to clean water and food, not knowing what I would meet along the way, to try and seek asylum and safety and refuge because my situation was so bad?”

Jessica Morales Rocketto, who heads the nonprofit advocacy group Families Belong Together, which organized the weekend trip, said one of the migrants the delegation spoke with has been waiting with her 1-year-old to apply for asylum since November. Another, a mother of a 4-month-old, gave birth while traveling in one of the migrant caravans, she said.

“People get to the border and think that’s the end of the journey, but it’s only the beginning,” said Morales Rocketto, who grew up in California and made frequent trips to a family dentist in Tijuana.

The visit was meant to inspire and educate actresses, storytellers and other influencers so they can better engage on an issue that matters to them, Ferrera said. The way Ferrera sees it, she has a responsibility as a citizen of the world to seek and speak truth.

Puerto Rican actress Roselyn Sanchez described the experience on Instagram as “surreal” and “eye-opening.”

“It’s depressing and at the same time marvelous to see the strength of these female warriors who, against wind and tide, walk for months for the wellbeing of themselves and their children. I’d like to have this mind and body of a giant,” she wrote.

Actress Kerry Washington concluded on Instagram that Families Belong Together is doing “God’s” work and called for donations to the charity.

Chelsea Handler: 'We Need to Impeach Barr and Trump'

Comedienne, former Netflix TV show host, and Democrat activist Chelsea Handler insisted that President Donald Trump and U.S. Attorney General William Barr need to be impeached over the Mueller investigation that found no cause to indict Trump.

Handler, whose latest outlet appears to be podcasting these days, jumped to Twitter to call for the end of the Trump administration (again).

“The corruption is on a level that surprises me every day, yet they do it with confidence and arrogance because they are with a man who hasn’t yet paid for any of his actions. That is why we need to impeach Barr and Trump. I’m so sick of information being held from the public,” she said on Thursday.

Of course, Handler’s Twitter accusations are not based in fact.

There hasn’t been anything “held from the public.” AG Barr’s testimony before Congress this week was based on his summary of the report by special counsel Robert Mueller that essentially exonerated Trump from charges of “collusion” and obstruction of justice.

Barr did not originate the assertion that the president was not guilty of the claims lodged against him for two years by the Democrats and the media. Robert Mueller did that.

Further, Barr’s summary of Mueller’s 400-page report is no act of subterfuge or any withholding of information from the American people because Mueller’s entire report can be read by anyone at any time by just downloading it from the Internet.
