The European Court of Justice (ECJ) confirmed Wednesday a €357 million fine imposed by the European Commission on the Pilkington glass manufacturing group for fixing the price of glass used in car windscreens.

The 2008 decision by the Commission to impose fines totaling €1.35 billion on four car glass producers, including on British firm Pilkington, was at the time the highest fine imposed for a single antitrust infringement.

Pilkington first challenged the decision in the EU’s General Court, which confirmed the fine. The glass manufacturer then appealed to the ECJ.

The ECJ ruled the Commission’s fine and its method of calculating it were valid, finding it was “not contrary to the principles of proportionality and equal treatment,” despite being significantly higher than prior fines.

Man City prevented a Premier League calamity in the Champions League – so why were England's best so bad?

Pep Guardiola came up with the goods to stop the Premier League rot – so how can the English sides battle back to rescue their European seasons?

Manchester City’s late turnaround on Wednesday night prevented a disastrous set of Champions League results for the English contingent.

The country was 6-0 down on aggregate and heading for four defeats out of four until Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne flipped the narrative at Real Madrid, seemingly confirming that English football is in something of a fallow year.

The Premier League in 2019-20 is an oddly low-quality campaign for most of the country’s best clubs as they stumble through transitional years, plod along with under-qualified young managers, or work out how to adapt to long-term injuries.

And so England is currently on course to have just one team in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2016-17, the year after Leicester City’s title win highlighted a ‘Big Six’ crisis. We are not quite at that point yet, but the drop-off from continental dominance in 2019 is worrying nonetheless.

Then again, at least three of the four English clubs could still progress.

Manchester City

Typical Pep Guardiola overthinking defined the vast majority of Man City’s 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu. Deploying De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva as false nines in a 4-4-2 surprised everyone, but there was some method in the madness. As the City manager explained after the game, he was worried about Real Madrid’s aggressive pressing and so wanted to play in a more withdrawn manner.

The plan was to drop off the defence in order to find space in midfield, keeping things tight rather than spreading wide and getting counter-pressed. However, Real aren’t as good as Guardiola made them out to be, and creating a claustrophobic first 45 minutes falsely made the hosts look like City’s equals.

He had over-complicated things – and City only grabbed this famous win by reverting to their usual system. Following Isco’s opener Guardiola brought Raheem Sterling on and moved to a more typical 4-4-1-1, with De Bruyne back in the No.10 role and Gabriel Jesus up front.

De Bruyne crossed for Jesus to equalise before Sterling earned a penalty down the left; two moves common in City’s normal approach.

Guardiola has already spoken of having to come up with a whole new plan for the return leg because Zinedine Zidane will have adapted accordingly. Again, this over-estimates his opponents. Man City need simply to play their own game in Guardiola’s usual 4-3-3 and they can blow away this under-par Real Madrid side.

Zidane’s midfield lacks the pace or agility to deal with De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva roaming in the No.10 space, a Sergio Ramos-less defence will struggle to cope with Sergio Aguero, and Raheem Sterling can dominate Dani Carvajal. The Man City manager needs to stop thinking so hard.

Liverpool

Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 win was pure Diego Simeone. Feeding off the atmosphere in the Wanda Metropolitano his players played a feisty, disruptive, and deliberately provocative brand of defensive football that aimed solely to stop the visitors from scoring.

Their 4-4-2 held firm in a midblock, compressing the lines ruthlessly and pressing very effectively when Liverpool tried to play through midfield. Only once the ball went into the final third did Atletico retreat, crowding out the front three. Liverpool didn’t do much wrong, although this game did show why – until recently – Jurgen Klopp had been keen to add a playmaker to the squad who could slip through-balls between the lines.

Their lack of creativity in central midfield simplifies the destruction jobs of the Atletico players, while the height in the Spanish outfit’s defence means they are invulnerable to the crosses of Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, not much needs changing. The electric atmosphere at Anfield, combined with the recent history of comebacks, means Liverpool’s usual brand of high-energy, gegenpressing football could create a very different outcome this time around – even if the tactical pattern of the match is exactly the same.

Atletico will sit back and Liverpool will dominate, relying on Alexander-Arnold and Robertson exchanging cross-field passes to pull that narrow 4-4-2 out of its shell. A fast start is vital. Liverpool need to make Atletico nervous and need to feed on the crowd’s enthusiasm, because if they play at their free-flowing best then not even Simeone’s tactics can stop them scoring.

Tottenham

Jose Mourinho’s tactical strategy was completely wrong in the first leg. Tottenham lined up in a flat 4-4-2 formation with Dele Alli up front alongside Luca Moura as Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn held the width… and that meant RB Leipzig had a numerical advantage in almost every area of the pitch.

Julian Nagelsmann’s 3-4-3 relies on Timo Werner and Christopher Nkunku dropping off the front to provide the wing-backs and central midfielders with line-breaking vertical passing options, and sure enough Leipzig could dominate with their favourite passing lanes. Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso were overwhelmed in the half-spaces where Werner and Nkunku held possession.

Playing just two in central midfield left Spurs far too light in the area Leipzig are most dangerous, while Serge Aurier made frequent positional errors to compound matters – rushing out to cover those gaps in the middle and exposing his team.

Aside from the midfield battle, Leipzig had a three on two in attack when breaking, and had a three on two advantage in their own defence. Rarely does a 4-4-2 sync effectively with 3-4-3.

Although it was entirely unsuccessful at Stamford Bridge the basic building blocks of the 3-5-2 system used against Chelsea should be deployed for the return leg in Germany. A three-man defence can go man-for-man with the Leipzig forwards, meaning a spare centre-back is free to step up and meet Werner, while wing-backs can have more licence to build counters (with Japhet Tanganga picked ahead of the error-prone Aurier).

Deploying three in central midfield is a must, with one powerful defensive midfielder at the base preferable, and although Lucas and Bergwijn are unlikely to hold up the ball, Mourinho has few other options in attack; long balls over the top of the Leipzig defence for these two to chase is the best strategy.

Spurs need to play a deep defensive line and frustrate Leipzig, keeping the score at 0-0 before going for the away goal in the final 20 minutes. In other words, they need a classic Mourinho away performance.

Chelsea

Chelsea weren’t ambitious enough on Tuesday evening, mistakenly using the 3-4-2-1 that had worked against Tottenham in the latest example of Frank Lampard sticking with what has worked before rather than develop a specific tactical plan for the upcoming opponent. The main issue was the players’ unfamiliarity with the system, because the back three were repeatedly caught out of sync with one another as Thomas Muller pulled the strings and Robert Lewandowski made intelligent runs.

They weren’t helped by a dreadful individual performance from Ross Barkley, and yet Lampard should have seen this coming; the 3-4-2-1 looks entirely different depending on whether you hold the majority or minority of the ball. Against superior opponents like Bayern, Mason Mount and Barkley lost their clever and dominant positions as dual No.10’s and were forced into wide midfield roles (5-4-1), which suits neither.

However, there were some positives. The five-man defence did appear to keep Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman relatively quiet – until Lampard told Reece James to get forward in the second half and things fell apart. Chelsea’s wing-backs were far more advanced after the break, creating huge gaps for Gnabry and Lewandowski to exchange passes – and force mistakes out of an overworked Cesar Azpilicueta – for the first two goals.

It is definitely too late for Chelsea to save the tie. However, they can at least improve on their first-leg performance by reinstating a 4-3-3 and looking to play purely on the counter-attack. It’s a case of damage limitation for Lampard, with N’Golo Kante needed alongside Mateo Kovacic to limit Muller’s influence. Jorginho’s suspension leaves Chelsea in a hopeless position.

'England need Kane & Rashford to be fit' – Shearer sees injured stars as crucial to Euro 2020 bid

The ex-Three Lions striker acknowledges that the likes of Tammy Abraham and Danny Ings are ready to step in, but wants proven options fit and firing

If England are to mount a serious challenge for Euro 2020 glory this summer then they “need” Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford to be fit, says Alan Shearer.

The Three Lions are currently sweating on the fitness of two key men heading towards another major championship.

Tottenham striker Kane is working his way back from hamstring surgery, putting his place as England captain at risk, while Manchester United forward Rashford is nursing a back complaint.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that the Red Devils star may be ruled out of international duty if those at Old Trafford feel he is not ready to form part of Gareth Southgate’s squad.

That would represent a major blow to the Three Lions’ plans, with the 2018 World Cup semi-finalists determined to end a long wait for tangible success.

Former striker and captain Shearer said in First Post during a visit to India: “I would hope England have a really good opportunity because they could even play the semi-final and final both at Wembley.

“At the minute, we don’t have Harry Kane or Rashford fit in terms of centre forwards, so if we are going to be successful, we will need those two fit, especially Kane.

“But, if not England, then France.”

While Southgate will be desperate to see Kane and Rashford come back into contention, he does have alternative options at his disposal.

Shearer believes star turns on the books at Chelsea, Southampton and Everton could come into the reckoning, while there remains an outside chance of talking a prolific Leicester striker out of retirement.

“You have got great opportunities whether the manager picks Jamie Vardy or not and asks him to come out of retirement,” said Shearer.

“He is the joint top scorer in the Premier League at the minute with 17 goals along with Aubameyang; then you have Tammy Abraham who has had a very good season in the Premier League. I know he has not played the last couple of matches.

“Then you have Danny Ings, then you have Calvert-Lewin as well.”

England have outings against Italy and Denmark to come in March, before wrapping up their Euro preparations with friendlies against Austria and Romania.

Their European Championship campaign is due to get underway on June 14 when they are reunited with familiar foes Croatia.

'Look at Firmino' – Leicester boss Rodgers compares Vardy to Liverpool star amid goal drought

Nine matches without a goal stands in stark contrast to his early-season exploits, but the Foxes boss is unconcerned for the hitman

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has thrown his support behind Jamie Vardy amid the striker’s struggles to find the net in recent weeks, comparing his frontman to Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino in how his movement helps to create chances for others in the side.

The 33-year-old has established himself as one of the most feared forwards of the current Premier League era, but while he sits level at the top of the scoring charts with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he has failed to register in his last nine matches across all competitions.

He does, however, boast a better accuracy rate that the Gabon man, with 65 per cent to Aubameyang’s 57% for shots on target – and has four assists to the Arsenal forward’s one.

And while the goals may have dried up of late, Rodgers has pointed to the other attributes the former England international brings to the Foxes’ game, creating space for others within the team using his pace and clever positional skills and backed his man to start firing again soon.

“I have no doubt he’ll get the goals and it’s a matter of time before he gets back to scoring again,” Rodgers told reporters. “Sometimes you get a run like it. You don’t force it, you don’t put pressure on, he knows that’s his job.

“If you’re needing 65 goals to get where you want to be, then it’s no good having a striker with 40 when the others can’t contribute – it’s a team responsibility.

“Look at Roberto Firmino at Liverpool – he’s scored 10, but look at his influence and what he gives and allows the other players [to do].

“With Jamie, when he’s not scoring he’s creating space for others. It’s the responsibility of everyone – full-backs, centre-halves, midfielders, front players, and the guys coming off the bench, too, to contribute.”

Alongside Vardy, two other veterans in the Leicester squad in Christian Fuchs and Wes Morgan are approaching the latter part of their respective careers, but Rodgers is more than keen to keep the experienced pair around the squad for the foreseeable, confirming that talks over contract extensions are ongoing with the 2015-16 Premier League winners.

“Both players have been immense for me,” the Northern Irishman said. “It’s not just on the pitch, it’s their qualities off the pitch that are very important. It’s so important to have senior players to drive the standard and both of those guys have been first-class for that.

“Negotiations with them are ongoing and we’ll see where it takes us.”

World-class Aubameyang leading by example at Arsenal

The Gunners striker has scored 60 goals in 95 games since joining from Borussia Dortmund and has performed admirably on the left side recently

There was a moment just four minutes into Arsenal’s 4-0 win against Newcastle just over a week ago which perfectly encapsulated the job Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is doing under Mikel Arteta.

He wasn’t scoring or creating havoc in and around the Newcastle 18-yard box, he was instead deep inside his own penalty getting a vital toe to the ball to deny Valentino Lazaro a shooting chance following a rapid counter attack from the visitors.

Aubameyang would go on to do what he does best in the second half when he headed Arsenal in front, but when he tracked back in those opening few minutes and halted a move which could easily have ended with the Gunners falling behind, he showed once again the work rate and desire that has been the hallmark of his play since Arteta was appointed in December.

There have been many positives for Arsenal in the two months since Arteta took over, but the way Aubameyang has stepped up and led by example is arguably the biggest.

Despite being asked to play out of position on the left and to do far more defensive work than he ever did under Unai Emery, Arsenal’s captain has done it without once kicking up a fuss, while still stepping up with vital goals at the other end.

“I’m so happy with him,” beamed Arteta after Sunday’s 3-2 win against Everton, when Aubameyang scored twice to take his tally for the season to 19 in 30 appearances.

“Obviously because he’s scoring very important goals for us but as well as a captain he’s giving a great example to everyone else. That a player of this calibre is able to work the way he is working defensively and he’s willing and happy to do it and I think it’s paying regards to him.”

When Aubameyang was handed the armband by Unai Emery amid the fall-out from Granit Xhaka’s bust-up with the Arsenal fans, there were many that questioned whether he had what it took to be a captain.

Ever since he arrived in north London there had been question marks over his attitude, fuelled mainly by the way he went about forcing his way out of Borussia Dortmund to complete his £56 ($72m / €66m) million switch the Emirates.

But Emery was convinced the forward had the right mindset and one of the first things Arteta made clear when he replaced the Spaniard was that he wouldn’t be changing the captaincy again.

And Aubameyang has gone on to make a mockery of those who questioned his appointment – both with his performances on the pitch and his attitude off it.

The way he has handled being played out on the left hand side has been exemplary. Clearly he would prefer to be operating as the central striker, but he is doing the job being asked of him and he is doing it superbly.

“You talk about Arsenal lacking characters and leadership, I think this guy has everything you would want,” commented Gary Neville on Sky Sports earlier this week.

“I didn’t know how he would adapt to being told to go and play on the left-hand side. The idea of doing a shift there when you think you’re the top man and you’re the goalscorer – but he seems to have really bought into it.

“He doesn’t look like he has been a moment’s bother since he’s come to Arsenal, so all the suggestions that he could have issues off the pitch have not materialised.

“I think the doubts have got to be removed now. I feel he doesn’t get appreciated anywhere as near as much as he should do.”

The fact there are still some who doubt Aubameyang is remarkable. His record since he made the move to Arsenal has been nothing short of sensational.

He has scored 60 goals in 95 appearances, while also chipping in with 13 assists. In the Premier League he has netted 49 in 74 games.

On average, he scores once every 123 minutes in the top flight, that places him fourth in the all-time record list, behind only Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Thierry Henry.

And that record is all the more impressive when you consider how many of those goals have come while playing on the left wing and also while playing in a side that has struggled for results and consistency.

“He’s ahead of Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who it felt like scored a goal every 10 seconds,” said Neville. “It’s unbelievable the performance from this lad over two and a half years.

“He’s not mentioned as world class, we don’t mention him as a Premier League great and I think we have to.”

That’s a view that is certainly shared by Alexandre Lacazette.

“I think people should talk more about Auba and what he is doing in the game,” said the former Lyon star.

“He is more than a goalscorer, he is working a lot for the team defensively and making space for the other striker – Eddie [Nketiah] or me.

“I think if we start to win more trophies, people will talk more about what he is doing.”

Of course the big worry for Arsenal is that the 30-year-old has now entered the last 18 months of his contract and talks over extending his stay have put on the back burner since the start of the season.

It’s a growing concern, although Arteta is adamant the situation is under control.

“The club has a very clear idea of how he wants to develop things,” said Arsenal’s head coach.

“They are in constant communication with the player’s agents and they know the plan better than I do. I completely trust them on that.”

But while the deal remains unsigned there is always a chance Aubameyang could leave and, given his age, he could not be blamed for looking elsewhere should an offer arrive from one of Europe’s top clubs.

He doesn’t owe anything to Arsenal. It’s not a similar situation to Robin van Persie, who the club had invested millions in throughout his development and had stood by during all his injury problems.

Aubameyang joined during the latter stages of his career and has delivered at a standard that few of his team-mates could match. So if a Champions League club came in for him this summer, he would be well within his right to consider a move.

What Arsenal hope is that the Arteta’s vision will be enough to convince him that he can still fulfil his ambitions in north London and that he doesn’t have to look elsewhere in the hunt for silverware.

But one thing that the past few months have shown us is that even if Aubameyang does decide to move on, he will continue to perform at the highest level right up to the moment he walks out the door.

The question as to whether he is world class shouldn’t even be a debate. Just look at the numbers, they speak for themselves.

'He's stepped in and stepped up' – Man Utd boss Solskjaer backed by Beckham

The Norwegian has had his fair share of setbacks during his time on the bench at Old Trafford but one former team-mate thinks he will succeed

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is “doing a good job” at Old Trafford, according to club great David Beckham.

Solskjaer – in his first full season at the helm having initially replaced Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in December 2018 – has overseen a topsy-turvy campaign, with United languishing fifth in the Premier League.

United have beaten Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Leicester City this season, and drawn with runaway leaders Liverpool, but the Red Devils are still three points adrift of the Champions League places.

Despite United’s struggles, Beckham – who played alongside Solskjaer at the Theatre of Dreams – praised the Norwegian boss.

“I think he’s doing a good job,” Beckham told Sky Sports. “The fact that he’s stepped in and stepped up, and that he continues to be positive about players, he’s got that from the boss [Alex Ferguson]. He would never criticise a player from his club and Ole has been exactly the same.

“He’s still learning but he will protect his players and protect Manchester United. All of the fans will be behind him because he’s a great person and because of what he’s done for Manchester United over the years.”

United have struggled since Alex Ferguson retired after guiding the club to Premier League glory in 2012-13.

Only twice have United finished in the top four – in 2015 and 2018 – following Ferguson’s exit as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have come and gone.

Bitter rivals Liverpool are 22 points clear atop the table and 38 ahead of United as they close in on their first league crown since 1990 and Beckham – now co-owner of MLS expansion side Inter Miami – said: “I think when you’re a club as big as Manchester United and you’ve had the amount of success that we had, there was always going to be a period where other clubs have some success.

“When that success is being had by Manchester City or Liverpool it’s always going to be talked about. There was always going to be a transition period, especially when Alex Ferguson stepped down.

“You had David Gill working at the club too and the players stopped playing, Giggsy [Ryan Giggs], Scholesy [Paul Scholes] and the Nevs [Gary and Phil Neville], they all stopped playing so there was always going to be a period when they weren’t as successful.

“Is it hard to watch them now? No because I’m a real Manchester United fan and whatever the situation, I love watching them play. But let’s hope it doesn’t last for too much longer that we go without trophies because we are one of the biggest clubs in the world and not many clubs have that tradition.”

A tort.
