Scott Adams: Think Outside the Bubble | Breitbart

Click:Anti-seepage geomembrane

Scott Adams, the Dilbert cartoonist who famously predicted in 2015 that President Donald Trump could win the presidency, is out with a new book Tuesday: Loserthink: How Untrained Brains are Ruining America.

It is the sequel to Adams’s bestselling Win Bigly (2017), which taught readers how to use some of the same persuasion techniques Trump used to great effect.

In LoserthinkAdams goes beyond persuasion: he wants to save the world.

Accordingly, Adams is asking those who purchase the book to pitch in: when they encounter a fallacious argument, he advises, they should simply take a photograph of the page in Loserthink where he addresses that particular idea, and tweet it in response.

That way, he says, not only will readers promote his book, and win arguments by looking more authoritative, but they will also share some of the insight that he hopes will, over time, make people happier.

“Loserthink,” Adams explains, is not exclusive to “losers.” We all do it. It is a way of looking at the world from inside familiar bubbles, such that set ourselves up to fail.

The problem is not that we lack the facts necessary to understand our reality: that, he explained in Win Bigly, is just part of the way we are wired. Rather, the problem is that the way we train ourselves to think tends to work well inside certain disciplines, but not others.

For example, he notes, it is common that Hollywood stars, many of whom are exceptionally talented and highly trained, fail to understand politics. The worst part is that they don’t know they fail: they act as though their opinions are the only correct ones.

That is partly the result of conformity: few conservatives dare to come out of the closet in Hollywood. But it is also a result of loserthink: they assume their expertise in one area carries across to another.

Likewise with climate science, Adams says. To journalists, and even to many scientists, the familiar graphs that predict global warming far out into the future seem convincing.

But to anyone with experience in the corporate world, Adams says, those graphs look like every phone economic projection ever used to sell an idea. That does not mean climate change is a fraud. What it means is that it is being sold as a fraud, which is why many people doubt it.

The problem is that most people who believe in climate change are trapped in loserthink bubbles. (So, too, he says, are some of the climate skeptics.) Thinking narrowly does not make you a “loser,” but it means you are less likely to succeed.

In the climate change example, that means you are less likely to persuade others, or you will adopt policies that make everyone miserable without solving the prolem. (See, e.g., California, if you have electricity today.)

Some of the material in Loserthink will be familiar to fans of Adams’s daily Periscope broadcasts, which attract thousands of people, including White House staffers and celebrities. The book compiles several years’ worth of examples of bad arguments. They are as entertaining as ever. Adams takes a risk by using the climate change example early in the book, which risks alienating those with strong opinions on the issue, who may be encountering his writing for the first time. Then again, there is something in Loserthink to shock everyone — which is his point.

Adams hopes that by encouraging his readers — and those they encounter online — to familiarize themselves with new ways of thinking, from different disciplines, he will help break down the divisions that have emerged in our society, and which make us all unhappy.

Break out of your “mental prisons,” he says. Loserthink may be the key.

Movie Mogul Tyler Perry to Cover Medical Expenses for American Couple Stranded in Mexico

Click:hype culture

Movie mogul Tyler Perry has reached out to pay the medical expenses for an Atlanta couple stranded in Mexico after one of them fell into a coma on a cruise ship.

Stephen Johnson was a passenger on a Carnival cruise ship when he fell into a coma last week due to pancreatitis and diabetes. The cruise ship’s medical staff was forced to take Johnson and his fiancé, Tori Austin, to a Centro Medico Americano hospital in the Mexican port city of Progreso.

Unfortunately, the couple does not have medical insurance and also did not take out any travel insurance, and they do not have the money to pay the expensive bills for the care. After rejecting a payment plan, the hospital decided to lock the couple in Stephen’s hospital room until some arrangement to pay the bill was approved.

The Atlanta, Georgia, couple, though, can rest easier, now, with the help of actor and media mogul Tyler Perry, TMZ reported.

Tyler Perry, whose film empire is based in Atlanta, reportedly tried to call the hospital over the phone and get them to charge the bill to his credit card. But the hospital was apparently wary of the attempt and refused to follow through with the charge.

So, Tyler Perry took an alternate route and wired the needed $14,000 to the hospital on Monday.

The administrators said that once the bill is settled, the couple will be allowed to leave the hospital and fly back home. Perry even offered to charter a medevac if needed, but doctors cleared the stricken man to fly commercially.

The couple should be back in Atlanta on Tuesday or Wednesday, they say.

Ultimately, Austin is thrilled to be going home, but insisted that her experience does not reflect badly on Mexico.

“What is going on with Stephen has nothing to do with the entire country, it has to do with this particular hospital,” she wrote on social media. “We were unaware that this particular hospital and administration staff have been known to take American passports and hold them for payment.”

Perry often uses his resources to help those in need. In September, her sent a private plane full of supplies to victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.

Spain, Portugal in line for penalties on budget deficits

Ministers have given potential sanctions the go-ahead, but the Iberian countries may persuade the Commission to be lenient.

EU finance ministers have given the European Commission the green light to pursue potential sanctions against Portugal and Spain for failing to meet the bloc’s budgetary rules.

The ministers made the decision today after scrutinizing an assessment by the Commission, which concluded that the Iberian countries had failed to take “effective action” to correct their budget deficits last year.

EU member countries must keep their budget deficits below 3 percent of economic output, as set out by the so-called Stability and Growth Pact.

Spain and Portugal’s deficits hit 5.1 percent and 4.4 percent, respectively, last year.

The Commission will now have 20 days to deliberate the severity of the sanctions for the two countries, which face fines of up to 0.2 percent of their GDP. Spain, as a result could face a maximum fine of €2 billion, whereas Portugal could be fined €360 million.

The EU’s executive arm could also choose to restrict EU funding — cash that is used for infrastructure projects like bridges and roads — to the two countries as further punishment.

It will now be up to Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, his deputy Valdis Dombrovskis, and Economy Commissioner Pierre Moscovici to agree on the severity of the EU sanctions.

“I am sure that we will have a smart, intelligent result at the end,” said Peter Kažimír, the finance minister of Slovakia and ECOFIN president.

But over the next 10 days, Portugal and Spain have the chance to convince the Commission that the fines should be significantly decreased, or even cancelled.

If the Commission is sufficiently persuaded by Iberian efforts to reduce their deficits through reforms, targets, and fresh initiatives, they could recommend EU finance ministers back down as well.

Stephen Colbert Admits: ‘We’re Trying to Get Trump to Exit the Oval Office’

Left-wing late-night host Stephen Colbert hosted actors Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Ian McKellen as guests on Wednesday’s edition of Late Show, where he declared that Americans are trying to get President Donald Trump to “exit the Oval Office.”

“You’re trying to, you know, Brexit … Britain exiting the European Union,” Colbert said to the two British actors. “We’re trying to get Trump to exit the Oval Office — we’re attempting a Trexit over here.”

Colbert then went on to ask the pair whether they would be willing to act out Donald Trump’s call with Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which Democrats are using as justification for opening partisan impeachment proceedings against him.

“Donald Trump, you may have heard, released a transcript of him essentially extorting the Ukrainian president,” Colbert said. “Now, he says it’s a ‘perfect’ phone call, perfectly innocent, and he wants to read it on air in a fireside chat, and he thinks when he reads it out loud, it will suddenly seem so innocent that you won’t want him removed from office.

“And since I have two of the greatest living actors right here, I was wondering if…,” the host added, before handing them the scripts.

The script turned out to be just one line from the conversation, where Trump says to Zelensky: “I’d like you to do us a favor though.”

That “favor” turned out to be Trump asking Zelensky to investigate the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike’s activity in Ukraine.

“I would like you to do us a favor though because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it,” Trump said. “I would like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine, they say Crowdstrike… I guess you have one of your wealthy people… The server, they say Ukraine has it.”

“There are a lot of things that went on, the·whole situation. I think you’re surrounding yourself with some of the same people,” he continued. “I would like to have the Attorney General call you or your people and I would like you to get to the bottom of it.”

Actress Ellen Barkin Blames Racism for Katie Hill Resigning Instead of Facing Ethics Probe

Left-wing actress Ellen Barkin asserted on Sunday that the U.S. is overwhelmingly misogynistic and racist due to Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) resigning over allegations of inappropriate sexual relationships with congressional staffers amid an ethics probe. Barkin used the suggestive hashtag “#Amerikkka2019″ to drive her point home.

The Ocean’s Thirteen star provided a series of unfounded statements on Twitter Sunday, driven by Hill’s recent departure from Congress.

“A rapist is a Supreme Court judge. A serial sexual assaulter is the president. The first person to be investigated under Congress’ new ‘no sex with staff’ rule is a woman, Rep Katie Hill,” Ellen Barkin said, alongside the hashtag “#Amerikkka2019.”

Hill resigned last week after allegations surfaced of inappropriate sexual relationships with congressional staffers, including a “throuple” relationship with a female staffer and a separate affair with a male staffer. The allegations spurred the House Ethics Committee to formally launch an investigation. While Hill denied an affair with a male staffer, she admitted to a relationship with the female staffer.

“Even a consensual relationship with a subordinate is inappropriate, but I still allowed it to happen despite my better judgment,” Hill stated. “For that, I apologize.”

Hill resigned last week amid the ethics probe, citing a “coordinated campaign carried out by the right-wing media and Republican opponents” who, she says, gave her abusive husband a platform. It remains unclear why Barkin believes an investigation into Hill points to a racist, “KKK” U.S., as she suggested in her tweet.

Barkin’s tweet came within hours of Hill’s Sunday night tweet, calling for voters to elect a woman in 2020.

“A year from now, we have a chance to show women and girls that we matter. Hopefully, we’ll elect a woman as President — if not, let’s work to make sure a serial sexual predator no longer occupies the White House,” Hill wrote.

“What are we as a nation going to do?” she continued. “Ladies, show up.”

Ellen Barkin is not the only far-left figure to attribute Hill’s fate to sexism. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) told Politico last week, “This doesn’t happen to male members in the same way — revenge porn in this respect. It’s horrific.”

“I don’t think we’re really talking about how targeted and serious this is. We’re talking about a major crime… being committed against her,” she added.

Several male lawmakers — including Reps. Joe Barton (R-TX), Pat Meehan (R-PA), Trent Franks (R-AZ), David Wu (D-OR), Anthony Weiner (D-NY), Eric Massa (D-NY), and Sen. Al Franken (D-NY) — were driven to resign over allegations of inappropriate sexual relationships or behavior.

Angela Merkel, not Juncker, should lead Brexit talks: Vote Leave

Matthew Elliott backs Michael Gove to take charge of Brexit negotiations.

Germany’s Angela Merkel is best placed to lead talks on Britain’s exit from the EU, the CEO of the Vote Leave campaign said Monday, arguing that his campaign group should also be consulted “because we have done lots of detailed planning.”

Matthew Elliott told CNBC that the chancellor “is a much more substantial figure in this process” than European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

“I see several people questioning Juncker’s long-term future now, saying he was one of the people that got us into this situation now by not giving us enough when we were in the negotiation process,” Elliott said.

He supported signals from Merkel that the Article 50 divorce process under the Lisbon Treaty need not be triggered immediately, in contrast to other leaders including Juncker and European Parliament President Martin Schulz, who want to see talks start immediately.

“If the government needs a reasonable amount of time to do that, we respect that,” Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said Monday, adding however that the uncertainty cannot continue forever.

“I don’t think we need to rush this process,” Elliott said. “During the campaign there was talk about triggering Article 50 and its process of leaving the EU right away, literally Friday morning, and I think quite rightly the prime minister has paused on that which allows the dust to settle, allows people to go away on holiday, have some informal discussions about it, and then think about it come September-October time.”

Elliott backed Michael Gove to become foreign secretary and lead the talks, which Elliott said “could be a two- or three-month process.”

“[Gove] was one of the key people at Vote Leave, a very, very bright man, thought a lot about this, did lots of speeches on what the plan could look like, so I think he’s probably the man to lead the negotiations,” Elliott said.

Elliott also responded to criticism of Vote Leave after it backtracked on claims made during the campaign that the U.K. stood to gain £350 million per week by leaving the EU.

“It’s up to Parliament to decide,” Elliott said. “That is the key point here. We elect our representatives to Parliament, they will decide what happens with the negotiation, they will decide what happens to the independence dividend from leaving the EU.”

'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Star Chelsea Peretti: Thanksgiving Dinner Is Spoiled by Family Separation, 'Climate Destruction'

Thanksgiving is ruined according to comedian and Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Chelsea Peretti because of family separation and “climate destruction,” among other things.

“[You] know what spoils Thanksgiving dinner? Incarceration of [your] loved ones, separating families, when [your] child is shot at school, ignoring the full reality of American history, certain climate destruction, but yeah pass the gravy — heheheh I want uncle Logan to feel comfy,” said Peretti on Wednesday.

The actress was responding to a tweet from the Associated Press, which read, “Worried that impeachment talk could spoil Thanksgiving dinner? An etiquette coach suggests setting aside a room for such discussions and designating a calm relative as a moderator.”

Following her tweet reacting to the Associated Press, Peretti retweeted several tweets from other accounts lambasting ICE for conducting a plethora of successful raids since January.

“Fuck ICE,” tweeted actor Joel Kim Booster, best known for his stand-up special on Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents.

The quasi-movie stars seemed particularly upset over a certain ICE operation that involved the federal government using a fake university to bust labor traffickers who funneled hundreds of Indian workers into college graduate jobs around the United States.

While Peretti retweeted accounts referring to the raid as an “entrapment” scheme for the purpose of deporting “legal” immigrants, the Detroit News reported earlier this year that the fake university in Farmington Hills, Michigan had been used “to lure alleged phony foreign students who were trying to stay in the United States illegally.”

The report noted that the fake school, known as “the University of Farmington” had been “utilized by undercover Homeland Security agents to identify people involved in immigration fraud,” according to unsealed federal grand jury indictments.

“Eight people were charged with participating in a conspiracy to help at least 600 foreign citizens stay in the U.S. illegally,” the report added, “according to the indictments, which describe a novel investigation that dates to 2015 but intensified one month into President Donald Trump’s tenure as part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration.”
