US students celebrate ‘graduation’ from Chinese culture winter camp

More than 300 students from overseas Chinese families here on Wednesday celebrated the end of their training at a Chinese culture winter camp with new skills and knowledge about China.

The mostly English-speaking students from the San Francisco-based Central Chinese High School in America went on stage here to showcase their newly-acquired skills in traditional Chinese culture, such as paper-cutting, clay modeling, Chinese knot-making, ethnic Chinese group dancing, and recitation of ancient Chinese poems in standard Mandarin.

The two-week winter camp provided them with convenient access to education about Chinese culture under the direct instruction of 12 Chinese teachers selected from 10 schools in East China’s Jiangsu province.

"In about 11 days, the Chinese teachers taught more than 300 kids from overseas Chinese families to learn how to make handcrafts unique to traditional China, including paper cutting, the playing of traditional Chinese music instruments and Chinese kung fu," said Ju Hua, chief of the Chinese teachers’ delegation.

Ju said the training provided the students with a good opportunity to experience in person the profoundness and charm of traditional Chinese culture, which will help them eventually become "ambassadors" of the friendly exchanges between Chinese and Americans.

Cai Bingle, headmaster of the Central Chinese High School in America, said the winter camp was a valuable platform for the students of Chinese descent, who were mostly born in the US, to learn traditional Chinese culture "at a very close distance" by engaging directly with their teachers from China.

Chinese tourists are expected to make 450 million domestic trips during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, said a report released Tuesday by the country’s major online travel agency Trip.com Group.

A total of 415 million trips were made across China during the Spring Festival holiday in 2019, up 7.6 percent compared with last year. About 4.6 billion domestic trips were made in the first three quarters this year, up 8.8 percent year on year.

Iran’s top leader vows ‘tough revenge’ for Soleimani’s killing by US

TEHRAN – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a statement on Friday that those who assassinated Major General Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), should wait for Iran’s severe response, state TV reported.

Khamenei said that the mission of Soleimani and “resistance” will not stop by his death.

All should know that “the resistance movement will continue more strongly, and a definite victory awaits those who fight in this auspicious path.”

The criminals who shed the blood of General Soleimani and his companions “should await a tough revenge,” he said.

An attack near Baghdad International Airport on Friday has killed Soleimani, along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhamdis, the deputy top leader of Iraq’s paramilitary Hashd Shaabi forces.

A security source and lawmaker anonymously told Xinhua that “eight people, including Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed in the attack on a military base near Baghdad International Airport.”

Previous reports said three rockets targeting the airport struck two vehicles nearby, killing at least seven people, including five Iraqi militia members and “two guests” in the cars.

Two of the deaths were Iranian nationals, the source confirmed with Xinhua.

The US Department of Defense announced on Thursday night that US forces had carried out a strike that killed Soleimani.

“At the direction of the President, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani,” said the Pentagon in a statement.

“This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans,” the statement added.

Khamenei announced three days of national mourning over Soleimani’s death.

Soleimani has once said that the IRGC forces will be able to deal with any war with the United States.

Al-Muhandis is one of the Iran-backed paramilitary leaders in Iraq. He is the de facto commander of the Hashd Shaabi forces in Iraq and heads the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades.

After the attack, parliament lawmaker Mish’aan al-Jubouri, who has a close relationship with al-Muhamdis, said in a tweet that “I mourn the brother, the rebellious, the dear and loyal friend who I have always watched him defying the death.”

The attack came after supporters of the Hashd Shaabi militias stormed on Tuesday the perimeter of the US embassy in Baghdad.

Local media aired photos showing al-Muhandis participating in the protest with Qais al-Khazali, head of Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq (League of the Righteous) militia, and top Hashd Shaabi leader Hadi Al Amri.

On Sunday evening, US forces bombarded the headquarters of Hashd Shaabi’s 45th and 46th Brigades, leaving 25 killed and 51 injured.

Greece, Cyprus, Israel sign agreement for EastMed gas pipeline

ATHENS – Greece, Cyprus, and Israel signed on Thursday in Athens an intergovernmental agreement for the construction of the Eastern Mediterranean (EastMed) natural gas pipeline, which is to link the region’s gas reserves to Greece and the rest of Europe.

The project aims to “contribute to the energy security of EU member states by diversifying energy sources and paths,” said an emailed press statement issued by the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ office after the signing ceremony.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Mitsotakis, his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, by the energy ministers of the three countries.

Thursday’s deal — which follows an initial framework agreement signed last year in Israel — contains provisions on measures for the protection and security of the pipeline, as well as the regulatory-licensing framework for facilitating the project and the common taxation framework that governs it, Greek national news agency AMNA reported, citing government sources.

At a joint press conference after the signing of the agreement, all three leaders stressed that the EastMed was a “pipeline of peace.”

Addressing the event, they said that the agreement foresees also the prospect of incorporating additional countries in the project and the prospect of transferring additional quantities of natural gas from existing or new reserves that may be found in the future.

The agreement for the EastMed “has a financial, development, diplomatic and geostrategic aspect. It is one of the largest pipelines of natural gas in the world. (It) will have obvious positive benefits for the participating countries, but will also contribute to peace and geopolitical stability,” Mitsotakis said at the press conference.

“The cooperation we have developed is not aimed against any third country. On the contrary, any country wishing to take part, is most welcome as long as it fully complies with the principles of international law,” Anastasiades added.

“From every point of view, this is a day of history,” Netanyahu stressed on his part.

The EastMed pipeline is scheduled to run across the Mediterranean Sea from the gas reserves which have been found off Israel in recent years to Crete Island, western Greece and then to Italy.

The project could also accommodate future gas finds in waters off Cyprus and Greece, where exploration is under way.

Italy is expected to sign the agreement at a later stage, the Greek government has said.

The pipeline will be 1,872 km long with initial capacity of 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas annually at a minimum budget of 5.2 billion euros (5.81 billion US dollars), and could expand to twice that with the latest compression technology, according to a Greek Environment and Energy Ministry press release.

The ministry added that the pipeline will provide Greece with a geopolitical advantage compared to alternative solutions for the distribution of North Mediterranean natural gas.

The project, which is backed by the European Union and the US, aims to help diversify Europe’s energy sources, said the three parties.

Earlier on Thursday in Athens, the Public Gas Corporation of Greece (DEPA) signed a letter of intent with the London-based Energean Oil & Gas company for the supply of 2 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas annually from Energean’s gas fields offshore Israel through the EastMed.

It was the first commercial agreement sealed for the pipeline, noted an e-mailed joint press release issued by the two companies. (1 euro = 1.12 US dollars)

SHANGHAI – Shanghai customs saw average daily imported cosmetics worth over 100 million yuan ($14.4 million) in the first 11 months of 2019, mirroring a rapid growth of consumer goods imports.

The metropolis imported 1.01 million tons of dairy products, up 15.9 percent year-on-year, accounting for 36.3 percent of the national total.

The rapid import growth marks of the rising income and improving livelihood of Chinese customers, said Wang Chengming of Shanghai customs.

Wang added the surge also shows China’s continuously improving business environment, as well as higher logistics and customs clearance efficiency.

Chinese government has lowered the import tax for daily consumer goods for several times in recent years, including lowering consumption tax rates and value-added tax rates.

Ibrahimovic: I didn't come to Milan as a mascot to dance on the sidelines

Milanello, the Rossoneri’s mascot, should not expect company from the Swede, whose focus is on the pitch at San Siro

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is determined to have an impact in his second spell at Milan, saying he is not back at San Siro to join Milanello the mascot on the sidelines.

Ibrahimovic met the media as he completed his free transfer from LA Galaxy to the Rossoneri on Friday.

The 38-year-old acknowledges very few players get to join one of the world’s elite clubs in the twilight of their career, yet he intends to impress on the field.

“I don’t remember how many signed for Milan at 38,” Ibrahimovic told a news conference. “If it happened, it means that I still have something to give.

“I don’t come as a mascot, to stand next to the devil [Milanello] and dance. I’m here to help out on the pitch.

“I’m happy. It’s also a test for me that shows that what I’m doing works and still has value.”

Ibrahimovic confirmed there was the possibility of a move to Milan last year, but he chose to stay in MLS, where he was enjoying his football again following a serious knee injury at Manchester United.

“I spoke to Leonardo, it is true, but I did not feel ready to return,” he said. “I was fine in Los Angeles and played continuously.

“When I went to America, I wanted to feel alive after the injury.

“I feel ready to play in Italy and help Milan. When I was in Paris, we didn’t talk about a return. There was no contact.”

Discussing the nature of his return this month, Ibrahimovic claimed he received more offers than when he previously joined Milan from Barcelona in 2010.

“After the last game with the Galaxy, I received a call from Paolo Maldini and we discussed ideas and plans for the future,” he said. “At 38, I had more requests than when I was 28.

“However, it was not a difficult decision: when I left Milan, I didn’t want to leave, I adapted. Now I am here again and will do everything to improve things.

“Milan is like my home. When I came here from Barcelona, I found the happiness of playing football here. I hope to return something.

“I am here with the greatest desire. I respect this club so much.”

Liverpool's Herbie Kane joins Hull for the season

The 21-year-old rejoins his old Doncaster boss in Yorkshire after shining under his tutelage last term in League One

Liverpool have announced that midfielder Herbie Kane has joined Championship side Hull City on loan for the remainder of the season.

Kane, a product of the Reds’ youth setup, made two senior appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s first team in the Carabao Cup this season, coming on for his debut as a substitute against MK Dons in September.

The 21-year-old has now moved on to Grant McCann’s Tigers for the second half of the 2019-20 term, with his new side chasing promotion to the Premier League as they currently sit ninth in England’s second tier.

McCann himself will see the signing as something of a coup, with Kane having been named in the League One Team of the Season in 2018-19 after taking in a loan spell under the Northern Irishman at Doncaster Rovers, scoring seven goals in 49 games.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead with Hull City,” Kane said in a press release on the club’s official website.

“I’ve been excited ever since I heard the news that the club wanted to bring me in on loan. It was nice to come in this morning and meet the lads and it’s great to be linking up with the gaffer again. It’s nice that he has the trust in me to bring me here.

“Going forward, hopefully I can play some games and help the team get to where it wants to be come the end of the season.”

Negotiations between the club moved quickly and all the necessary paperwork has been completed to allow the 21-year-old to feature in Saturday’s FA Cup third round match-up with Rotherham United.

Should he make his debut for his new club, fans will see their new signing sport squad number 41 on his back.

Back in Liverpool, meanwhile, the Reds’ recent 2-0 win over a stubborn Sheffield United side restored their 13-point gap at the top of the Premier League heading into this week’s domestic cup matches, where a Merseyside derby awaits on Sunday.

Following their FA Cup excursions, Klopp’s side return to top-flight action with a trip to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham on January 11.

Neville urges Man Utd to add creativity in January amid Grealish & Maddison rumours

The former Red Devils star believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to find added creativity in January in order to make his side more competitive

Manchester United need to be prioritising creative talent in the January transfer window, says Phil Neville, with defensive leaks “easier to rectify” than struggles for a spark in the final third.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be favouring that approach with another market now open for business.

Attacking talent is said to figure prominently on the wish list of those at Old Trafford.

Several strikers have been linked with big-money moves, while speculation regarding the likes of Jack Grealish and James Maddison is never far away.

Paul Pogba finds himself back on the treatment table at present, with the Red Devils still crying out for a dominant figure in the middle of the park.

Those failings were highlighted once again in a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on New Year’s Day, with Solskjaer now being urged to move quickly for another match-winner.

Neville told BBC Sport: “Look, they didn’t deserve to win but I thought we had chances in the game where you could have played a pass through, where you needed that extra bit of quality.

“I think this is where Ole Gunnar needs to strengthen.

“Moments where the right weight, the right pass, pass to the right side.

“I totally agree [the defence] is not good enough but I always think the defending side of the game is easier to rectify, to get better.

“It’s the final end of the pitch where you need to spend money, where you win Champions Leagues and where you win Premier Leagues.”

Solskjaer revealed on the back of a disappointing defeat at Emirates Stadium that he hopes to be in the position to bolster his ranks over the coming weeks.

He said: “You can see the squad and sometimes you think, yeah, one or two additions would do nicely because we are building towards something.

“It just depends on if what we think will be right for us will be available.

“Of course it’s playing on our decision-making when we’ve got two players out for a bit, Scott [McTominay] for two months and Paul [Pogba] for a month.

“That gives us less options and we have loads of games and important games.

“But it still has to be right and that’s the big point here, if someone is available and something is possible we’ll do it. We’re looking at one or two.”
