Securities regulator vows to contain financial risks

Containing financial risks will continue to be a key priority of China’s top securities regulator this year as it pledged on Friday to effectively and properly resolve risks in equity collateral business, bond defaults and private equity investment.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission also vowed to step up a crackdown on illegal activities such as fraudulent initial public offerings, financial fraud, insider trading and market manipulation.

The regulator gave the statement after its two-day annual work conference which closed on Friday in Beijing.

Pushing market-based IPO reform is also a main objective of the regulator as it will gradually expand the registration-based share sale system with an emphasis on information disclosure to the wider marketplace.

Shenzhen’s innovative startup board ChiNext will pilot the new IPO system based on the successful experience of Shanghai’s technology-focused board called the STAR Market.

“The registration system is a sign that the Chinese stock market is becoming more mature as it is now connecting closer and closer to the global markets through arrangements such as Mainland-Hong Kong stock connect programs and the Shanghai-London trading link,” said Chen Jiahe, chief investment officer of Novem Arcae Technologies.

“It is a system that aims at increasing the efficiency of the market. This will also bring more requirements to the expertise of investors,” Chen said.

The CSRC said that it will also encourage more technology firms to go public and raise funds in the capital market. It will work to attract long-term institutional capital including equity funds into the market and promote the balanced development of financing and investment.

China’s top legislature adopted the revised Securities Law last month which laid the legal basis for the country to deepen capital market reform, step up investor protection and substantially raise the costs companies will face for engaging in illegal activities.

The revised law will become effective on March 1.

The regulator said it will comprehensively strengthen the rule of law in China’s capital markets, promote the revision of the country’s Criminal Law, and push the legislation of the Futures Law to better protect the rights and interests of investors.

It will likewise work to improve the quality of listed companies and optimize a market-oriented and rules-based delisting process.

The regulator said it will boost the role of the capital market in serving the real economy and providing necessary financing to smaller businesses.

Harry and Meghan to stop using HRH titles and receiving public funds

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan will no longer use their royal titles or receive public funds for royal duties, a statement issued by Buckingham Palace ‪on Saturday evening‬ announced.

The news comes in the wake of the couple’s announcement earlier this month that they wished to step back from front-line royal duties, and to divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America.

The palace statement said while the couple, who are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, “no longer formally represent The Queen, they have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty”.

The Sussexes have also shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain the UK home for them and their young son Archie.

Buckingham Palace does not comment on the details of security arrangements. There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly funded security.

Abu Dhabi’s energy chief confirms cooperation on BRI plan

Abu Dhabi’s energy chief, Awaidha Murshed Ali Al Marar, says the United Arab Emirates is looking to support energy development in the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, as well as secure further Chinese investment in the UAE’s electricity grid.

In an exclusive interview with China Daily at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, or ADSW, Abu Dhabi Department of Energy Chairman Al Marar provided an update on a memorandum of understanding signed between the UAE and China last year.

"Since we signed the MoU with the State Grid Corporation of China, we have held several follow up meetings and exchanged delegations with key Chinese entities," said Al Marar, who heads up energy policy for Abu Dhabi, the second-most populous of the UAE’s seven emirates behind Dubai. "Importantly, we were able to identify areas of cooperation in renewable energy policymaking and explored investment opportunities including in the energy transmission and distribution business as well as grid expansion within the UAE."

The UAE is looking to solar and nuclear power to lead its transition from fossil fuel energy generation. Last year, China’s Silk Road Fund and a number of Chinese banks lead financing for a 950-megawatt solar farm near Dubai, which promises to be among the world’s largest such facilities. In 2017, China’s Shanghai Electric was selected as the main contractor for the project.

Al Marar said that UAE-China collaboration on renewable energy will help ensure sustainability along the Belt and Road Initiative, which is an infrastructure and economic development plan proposed by China.

"These type of agreements and the ongoing meetings, research and benchmarking between the Department of Energy and Chinese companies is key to enhancing our cooperation in the renewable energy industry and allows us to share and explore opportunities and future expansion plans that would support China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Abu Dhabi’s sustainable development goals," Al Marar said.

The UAE continues to generate the majority of its energy through fossil fuels, though Al Marar said the nation is working hard to lessen its reliance on finite resources and ramp up solar capacity.

Through the sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi government set up a renewable energy and sustainable urban development company in 2006 called Masdar, which has developed nearly 5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity worldwide and invested $13.5 billion in green projects. In an earlier interview at ADSW, Masdar Chief Executive Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi confirmed to China Daily that the company is currently exploring investment opportunities in both China and along the Belt and Road regions.

Al Marar says China has played a major role in aiding the UAE’s pivot to solar.

"If you look at most of the solar panels on our grid you will see Made in China," he said. "China is focusing on getting away from coal and decreasing emissions. What China has been doing to adapt in terms of technology, research and production is spilling over to other countries including ours."

At the ADSW, the Deputy Director of China’s National Energy Administration Liu Baohua laid out the nation’s commitments to sustainable development. He said that non-fossil fuels would account for 15 percent of China’s energy mix by the end of this year-up from 14.7 percent in 2019-and rise to 20 percent by 2030.

"The Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of renewable energy and vigorously promotes the revolution in energy production and consumption," Liu said.

Tennis stars raise 5 mln dollars for Australian bushfire charity

SYDNEY – The World’s best tennis players took to the court in Australia on Wednesday evening, in a special charity event for the Australian bushfires, raising close to five million Australian (3.4 million US) dollars.

Amid the Australian Open qualifying rounds, the Rally for Relief featured big name stars including Roger Federer, Serena William, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka, Caroline Wozniacki, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev.

Firefighters and emergency personnel watched on from court side seats as the multi-generational stars played fast four doubles, bringing much needed laughter and fun to those who have struggled over the past months.

Australia’s devastating bushfire season has claimed at least 28 lives, destroyed over 2,000 homes and razed millions of hectares of wilderness.

Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios, who comes from an area near to where the fires are, described the emotional feeling of seeing some of the biggest stars in the world getting behind Australia in a time of need.

“The awareness has grown and I think we’re doing everything we possibly can to overcome this,” Kyrgios said.

“I’ve got goosebumps … everyone came together and it’s just an amazing feeling — It’s been an emotional couple of weeks.”

In an Australian Open preview, Kyrgios was joined by Federer for a friendly one set match which the Swiss player won 7-6.

“What I wanted to do was raise awareness, raise money and tell people to still come and travel to Australia because people probably think around the world that you can’t right now,” Federer said.

Federer also paired up with Nadal to donate 250 thousand Australian (171 thousand US) dollars from their own pockets too help with bushfire relief.

United vies for China’s mid-level market

United Airlines is exploring options in the Chinese mid-level market, which is believed to contain huge potential according to a senior executive with the US carrier.

“China is absolutely one of the most important international markets for United Airlines,” said Jake Cefolia, senior vice president of worldwide sales for United. “In fact we have been serving China longer than any other US airline, since 1983.”

Despite its outstanding performance in China, there is still a missing piece of the puzzle for United to focus on in the coming years, which is the mid-level market.

“We do very well with multinational firms, we also do very well with leisure travelers,” Cefolia said. “The area we haven’t done well in is mid-market business travel, SME or SMB corporate travel. We do think there is tremendous opportunity and potential there, so I think over the next few years that’s going to be more of a focus for us, because we think there is a lot of potential there.”

The growing Chinese middle class and its upgraded consumption preferences are creating new demand in aviation.

The number of outbound leisure travelers from China has been on a rapid growth path with diversified requirements, Cefolia said, and the group shares a common preference — they want to be served in a style familiar to them.

According to Cefolia, United Airlines responded to such demand with comfortable and familiar service for Chinese passengers, including Chinese cuisine, slippers on board, Chinese language service professionals and Chinese-produced entertainment.

United is currently the largest US airline traveling between China and the US, with 90 weekly flights.

Ride of a lifetime

Chinese artist Yang Yongliang’s virtual-reality film Nine Dragons is a visual spectacle like none other.

Miss it and you’ll be kicking yourself – you’ve got until Saturday evening to see Views of Water, showcasing the remarkable, otherworldly new body of work by the innovative Chinese artist Yang Yongliang. For Yang’s second solo exhibition at Whitestone Gallery in H Queen’s, he has again delivered what he does best, using the newest techniques to reinvigorate the oldest art forms.

The exhibition is separated into three sections. First is a six-part series of eight-minute videos in which Yang has reconceptualised masterpieces by the Song Dynasty painter Ma Yuan (1160–1225) by infusing them with an undercurrent of environmental concern, given globally rising sea levels and temperatures. There’s also a series of lightboxes that form a second work, in which Yang has transformed digital images and developed them onto negative film.

Finally comes the real showstopper: Nine Dragons, Yang’s latest virtual-reality work, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 and is being shown in a gallery space for the first time. Again, Yang invokes a Southern Song Dynasty artist, this time Chen Rong and his Nine Dragons (1244), a handscroll painting in which the nine dragons soar among clouds, mists, seas, fire and mountains.

This artwork really stands out, as there’s a special raised seat in the gallery equipped with goggles, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves with the ten-minute work while virtually sitting on the back of a dragon, travelling over rocky mountains and underneath the ocean, simulating the sensations of riding such a beast. The goggles allow you to gaze in any and all directions, affording a 360-degree sweep of narrative and adventure.

When was the last time your art or cinema experience consisted of a journey “felt” through a dragon’s point of view? It might be Song Dynasty-influenced, but it’s rendered in today’s pitch-perfect tune of art’s digital dynasty.

National college entrance exam dates set for Beijing

Beijing students will take gaokao, or the national college entrance exam, for four days from June 7 to 10 this year, the city’s education authority said Sunday.

According to the agenda, students will take exams in Chinese and mathematics on June 7, and the test for English or other foreign languages will be on June 8.

Tests in physics, politics and chemistry will be on June 9, and tests in history, biology and geography are on June 10.

Students can choose to take three of the six subjects offered on June 9 and 10, according to a reform plan that the city started to implement for students enrolled in high schools in 2017.

A total of 14 regions are implementing comprehensive reform since the State Council in 2014 initiated gaokao reform.

The reform allows students to have more choices — up to 12 combinations of subjects instead of the two choices between arts and science.

Student performance on high school academic tests also will serve as measurable indicators.

'Van Dijk is the best centre-half I've ever seen' – Murphy hails 'perfect' Liverpool superstar

A former Red has heaped praise upon the Dutchman ahead of his old club’s meeting with Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend

Virgil van Dijk is the “perfect defender” and a “bonafide star”, according to Danny Murphy, who cannot see any flaws in the Liverpool defender’s game.

Van Dijk joined the Reds for a record fee of £75 million ($98m) from Southampton in January 2018, and has since established himself as arguably the most important player in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI.

The Netherlands international helped Liverpool win a unique treble in 2019, with success in the European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup backed up by significant progress in the Premier League.

The Merseyside outfit missed out on the title by just a single point last season, but they are on course to end a 30-year wait for domestic glory come May having opened up a 13 point lead at the top of the table.

Liverpool have two games in hand on reigning champions Manchester City, and boast the meanest defensive record in the top flight with only 14 goals conceded in 21 fixtures.

Van Dijk – who finished second in December’s Ballon d’Or voting behind eventual winner Lionel Messi – has led by example at the back once again, with Murphy describing the 28-year-old as the best defender in the business.

“He’s the best centre-half I’ve ever seen,” the ex-Liverpool midfielder wrote in his latest column for the Daily Mail.

“Calm, assured and someone the whole group looks up to.

“If you wanted a computer program to create the perfect defender, it would come up with Van Dijk.

“Nobody can outrun or outfight him and, though he’s a bona fide star, there is nothing flash or celebrity about him.”

Van Dijk will likely retain a place in Klopp’s line up when Manchester United arrive at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool can extend their unbeaten run to 39 Premier League matches if they beat the Red Devils, who are the only side to have taken any points from them this term.

United held the Reds to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford back in October, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have since slipped 27 points behind their arch-rivals in the standings.

Liverpool have won their last 12 matches in the top flight, and will be looking to capitalise on second-placed City’s 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
