Alexander-Arnold eyeing third successive Champions League final as Liverpool target 'perfect 2020'

The Reds full-back is not content to focus solely on a Premier League title charge, with two other major trophies still up for grabs this season

Liverpool want to “win as many trophies as possible” in 2020, according to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has already set his sights on more success in the Champions League.

The Reds picked up a unique treble last year, following up a sixth European Cup triumph with success in the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are now on course to add a Premier League crown to their haul, having opened up a 13-point lead at the top of the standings after 20 fixtures .

Liverpool have a game in hand over second-placed Leicester and reigning champions Manchester City, and the Merseyside outfit have also managed to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup and reach the Champions League knockout stages again, with a heavyweight last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid on the cards in February.

Alexander-Arnold is eager for Liverpool to replicate last year’s success in the competition, while also maintaining their domestic form through to May.

“Keeping up the momentum we’ve got and trying to replicate 2019 as much as possible because, if we do that, I think more trophies will come,” the England international told the club’s official matchday programme when asked about his goals for 2020.

“With the position we are in in the Premier League, if we can replicate what we did in the first half of the season then we will be in a solid position come May.

“Hopefully we can get to another Champions League final too, but we’ve got a difficult draw. Atletico Madrid are a stubborn team, one that’s hard to break down, and a passionate team with a passionate manager. It’ll be interesting to see the two managers on the touchline and see who is more passionate!

“We enjoyed the Champions League last year because we had such a tough run. Every game we had to get to the final was against a different type of opponent after a really tough group.

“We had a tough group this year and a tough round of 16 opponent again, but we like to be tested as a team because it brings the best out of us. If you want to be the best you have to beat the best, so for us it’s about testing ourselves as much as possible.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to go back to Istanbul again, which would be massive for the club, but to have a perfect 2020 we need to win as many trophies as possible.”

Liverpool will be back in Premier League action on Saturday, with a trip to north London to face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham on the cards.

Klopp’s men are due to welcome Manchester United to Anfield eight days later, before coming up against Wolves at Molineux on January 23.

Rashford: World-class De Gea kept Man Utd in Carabao Cup tie

The striker believes a string of saves from the Spaniard is responsible for keeping the two-legged affair competitive ahead of the return leg

Marcus Rashford says the Manchester United should be thankful to David de Gea for keeping them in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City following a 3-1 first-leg defeat to at Old Trafford.

United slumped to a 3-0 half-time deficit but restored some hope when Rashford, captaining the side for the first time, netted after the break.

However, the 22-year-old has said that it is the team’s shot-stopper who should be credited with keeping them in with a shout heading into the return match, which will be played at the Etihad Stadium on January 29.

“For me, it wasn’t the goal that gives us a chance,” he told the club’s official website. “David made three or four world-class saves and that’s the reason we’re still in the tie. We have to understand that.

“They changed a little bit from the last time we played against them. Maybe we have to adapt a little bit more on the pitch as players and try to control the game a little bit more. It’s tough against them – they’re a good team – but we have to expect more from ourselves.

“It’s disappointing to lose the game. The first half wasn’t good enough. The second half was a little bit better and a little bit more like ourselves. But today we weren’t good enough to win the game. Now we have to focus on Norwich.”

For the England striker, the result certainly took the shine off what was otherwise a special night for him.

“It’s a nice feeling to captain the side for the first time, but it’s the result that matters and we didn’t manage to get the win,” he said.

Despite the outcome, he remains cautiously optimistic that there is a chance of turning the tie around, having performed a similar two-goal salvage operation in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain last season.

“It’s a different game, different players,” he said. “But what we found in Paris, we have to find that in us again. We have to go there and score goals and win the game.”

Next up for United is a trip to Norwich in the Premier League as they seek to end a three-game winless streak.

Messi is an alien and deserves to win a trophy with Argentina – Sorin

A former national teammate of the Barcelona star believes there’s no stopping him on the pitch and he is overdue international success

Ex-Argentina international Juan Pablo Sorin has described Lionel Messi as “an alien” and expressed his hopes that the country can reward his performances with silverware before he retires.

Sorin played briefly with Messi in the national team set-up before retiring in 2009.

Having seen the Barcelona star perform up close and now from afar, Sorin conceded there’s no stopping Messi at his best and stressed he deserves some international silverware for all he’s done in attempting to rebuild the Argentina team.

“Luckily we played together,” Sorin told Ole. “He is an alien, there is no way [to stop him].

“You saw the goal he made against [Athletic] Bilbao in the final of the Copa del Rey almost as a right winger – a monster! I have serious pride in having shared his first times in the national team.

“Messi assumed this reconstruction of the national team from a leading place and not wanting to break anything in there. Then he also understood, as it happens to all of us when we grow up, what is the weight of his voice.

“I hope we get a result in a major tournament with him. Maybe we deserved it a lot, but his struggle, having left so many things and past so many situations…

“I think that not only Argentines want it but the fans of the world expect him to also win something big with Argentina.”

Messi claimed a record sixth Ballon d’Or in 2019 and despite now being 32, remains a reliable performer for Barcelona in La Liga this season.

Sorin adding that Messi’s skills and consistency over the past decade has been nothing short of ‘crazy’.

“It’s like he owns the ball, he has it and he knows that he will do the most difficult thing, that he will be decisive every time he touches it,” he said.

“And when he realised that, he assumed that responsibility according to his personality. Without having to shout it, without going out to make strong statements.

“Knowing and feeling decisive in whatever shirt is a difficult responsibility. But the most difficult thing is maintaining that level of genius and being the best for so many years – it’s a crazy thing!”

Man City could have led Man Utd 5-0 at half-time – Bernardo Silva

The Portugal star opened the scoring for his side and believes they could have done even more damage in the first 45 minutes

Bernardo Silva suggested Manchester United were lucky to only be losing 3-0 at half-time in Tuesday’s EFL Cup semi-final first-leg defeat to Manchester City.

City claimed a 3-1 win at Old Trafford, with their rampant first-half display seeing them comfortably claim victory and put one foot in the final.

Silva opened the scoring with a wonderful long-range effort, before then setting up Riyad Mahrez to make it two. An Andreas Pereira own goal, engineered by Kevin De Bruyne, effectively put the game beyond United before the break.

Marcus Rashford pulled one back for the hosts in the second half, but that goal came from a rare moment of incisiveness as United were well beaten.

Silva adamant City could and should have led by more at the break prior to what was a more difficult second 45 minutes at Old Trafford.

“I think we could have gone to half-time winning by four or five because we missed a few chances, then the second half was very hard for us,” Silva told Sky Sports

“They started pressing higher, trying to control the game and getting on the ball. We got a bit tired, but I think overall it was a good performance and we’re happy with this win.

“It’s never easy to come here to Old Trafford against one of the best sides in England, in Europe, and to win 3-1.

“When you play a derby and you play Man United, you cannot always win. We were disappointed because losing at home [to United in December] is not normal for us. Coming here, in a way it makes it up to our fans, who once again were unbelievable in helping us get this win.”

Pep Guardiola sprung something of a surprise with his team selection, opting against using a striker and instead loading the midfield and frontline with creative players.

Silva relished the extra attacking freedom and gave his coach’s tactical tweak his seal of approval.

“I enjoyed it a lot, especially because we won and because it worked,” he added. “I think Pep wanted one more man in the middle and that’s why he put me there. Happily, it worked.”

Timbits Breakfast Cereal Coming To Canadian Supermarkets This Year

Faced with declining sales at its existing stores, Tim Hortons is busily looking to reinvent itself.

In just the past few years, the iconic doughnut and coffee chain has tried out home delivery, a plant-based Beyond Meat burger, and even a controversial smoked-meat sausage breakfast sandwich.

The chain’s latest foray into the new and untested? A line of breakfast cereals based on its Timbits.

Post Foods Canada ― makers of Shreddies and Sugar Crisp ― announced Monday it’s launching cereals based on Timbits flavours. The first two to hit the shelves will be Post Timbits Chocolate Glazed and Post Timbits Birthday Cake.

The company says the cereals will be available in “major” supermarkets across Canada early this year.

“We all know how hard it is to resist Timbits, so we are very excited to be able to bring the fun of enjoying Timbits to cereal bowls across the country,” said David Bagozzi, vice president of marketing at Post Foods Canada, in a statement.

Rumours that Tim Hortons was planning a breakfast cereal exploded last October when Twitter user Rob Turudic posted pictures of Tim Hortons cereal boxes. The images shared at that time turned out to be very similar to the images Post Foods released Monday.

Tim Hortons has seen falling sales in its existing locations over the past few years, even as its parent company ― Restaurant Brands International (RBI) ― is aggressively moving to expand the chain worldwide.

Same-store sales dropped by 1.4 per cent in the third fiscal quarter, even as Tim Hortons’ sister brands at RBI, Burger King and Popeye’s, saw strong same-store sales growth. That has caused some industry analysts to question the company’s strategy.

RBI CEO Jose Cil said last October the chain is struggling to compete for the lunchtime crowd, noting a “gap in sales of our sandwiches and wraps.”

The chain is offsetting some of that weakness with aggressive plans to enter new markets. Tim Hortons launched in China this year, amid plans by RBI to expand the number of Tim Hortons, Burger King and Popeye’s locations to 40,000, from the current 26,000.

Arsenal focus on January loan deals after £130m summer outlay

The Gunners have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng following an injury to Calum Chambers

Arsenal will once again be focusing on the January loan market as they look to strengthen their squad over the coming weeks.

With finances tight this time last year, former boss Unai Emery revealed that the club would be unable to make any permanent signings during the winter transfer window.

As a result only Denis Suarez arrived, with the attacking midfielder brought in for the second half of the 2018-19 campaign from Barcelona.

And it looks like new head coach Mikel Arteta will also be unable to splash the cash this month if he wants to add to his squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Having committed to transfers in excess of £130 million ($171m) last summer, Arsenal stretched themselves financially even though the club were once again facing up to another season without Champions League football.

And Goal has been told that last summer’s costly outlay means it is unlikely Arsenal will make any permanent signings during the January window, unless an opportunity presents itself that is too good to turn down.

They will instead focus on trying to bring in one or two loan additions to boost Arteta’s squad before loosening the purse strings again in the summer ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Arsenal are in the market for a centre-back following the season-ending knee injury suffered by Calum Chambers during the defeat against Chelsea in December.

Chambers, who has filled in at both right-back and centre-half this season, ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will be out of action for up to nine months.

The injury leaves Arsenal short defensively, with Hector Bellerin also struggling with a persistent hamstring problem and Kieran Tierney ruled out for another two months as he recovers from a dislocated shoulder.

Arteta wants to bring someone in to bolster his options at the back and there has been interest in Juventus’ Merih Demiral, but the Serie A club do not want to loan out their 21-year-old defender.

Jerome Boateng, out of favour at Bayern Munich, has also been considered but his fitness issues and lack of game time this season is a concern to the Arsenal hierarchy.

The north London club want to ensure that anyone who does arrive this month is ready immediately to help the team, with the scars from last season’s ill-fated move for Suarez still fresh.

Speaking after Arsenal’s 1-0 victory against Leeds United in the FA Cup on Monday night, Arteta was quizzed on a potential move for Boateng.

He said: ”We don’t talk about any transfers and we are working on a few things. When the club has something to say I will let you know.”

Arsenal had been planning to bring in a central midfielder this window to replace Granit Xhaka, who had looked certain to leave for Hertha Berlin following his public fall-out with the fans.

But Arteta has convinced the Switzerland international to stay until the summer at least and, with Dani Ceballos now fit again following two months out with a hamstring problem, the focus has switched to finding defensive reinforcements.

Dayot Upamecano at RB Leipzig is a long-term target, but a summer move for the centre-back, who is contracted until 2021, is a far more likely prospect, with the Bundesliga side valuing the 21-year-old at around £45 million ($59m).

Eddie Nketiah, meanwhile, is expected to head out on loan again in the coming days having returned to Arsenal following a spell with Leeds during the first half of the campaign.

The striker is wanted by several Championship clubs, with Bristol City the favourites to land the 20-year-old for the rest of the season.

Sa diet, of course ! A votre santé, your Majesty !

VIDEO – Loana a retrouvé l’amour
