Based on an award-winning novel of the same name, the movie depicts the story of Xiao Jian, a veteran who works as the head of the security team of a Chinese company involved in the construction of the China-Thailand Railway. Xiao rescues the kidnapped daughter of the company chairman with the help of Thai police, thus preventing an international dispute.

The movie has pocketed over 210,000 yuan (about $30,237) in presales, according to the major Chinese film database Maoyan.

Belgium, Canada sneak through to quarterfinals of ATP Cup

SYDNEY – The final eight places of Australia’s inaugural ATP Cup are now set with Belgium and Canada sneaking through to the quarter final stage on day six action of the tournament.

With all the Group Stage matches completed late on Wednesday night, the two best-placed runner’s up will now join pool winners Australia, Great Britain, Serbia, Spain, Argentina and Russia in the all-mens, 24-nation round robin tournament.

Looking in superb form since landing in Brisbane, world number two Novak Djokovic and his Serbian outfit beat out Chile 2-1 and in the following fixtures South Africa upset France 2-1 on the back of some Kevin Anderson brilliance.

In Perth, world number one Rafael Nadal’s Spanish side demolished Japan 3-0, while Georgia scrapped past Uruguay 2-1.

One of the matches took a very bizarre turn when Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas was warned by the chair umpire over lack of effort.

In response, Cuevas began to jump around the court in a strange and comical way.

Threatening to leave the court and boycott the match, it was his opponent Nikoloz Basilashvili, who convinced Cuevas to stay.

“For me it was an overreacting call from the referee,” Basilashvili told reporters after the match.

“I just told him it was a bad call from the referee and let’s continue playing.”

Basilashvili eventually won the contest 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

In Sydney, Poland were too strong for Austria, winning 2-1, while Argentina thrashed Croatia 3-0 thanks to a stunning 7-6 (1), 6-3 upset by Guido Pella over former U.S. Open Winner Marin Cilic.

Starting Thursday in Sydney, Great Britain will take on Australia and Argentina will face down Russia.

On Friday, Serbia is set to collide with Canada, while Spain will battle it out with Belgium.

Bullish trend expected for A-share market

Fund managers optimistic on increased participation by international investors

China’s A-share market is expected to generate higher-than-expected profits and see increased participation from foreign investors this year, as economic growth stabilizes in the country through further restructuring, experts said on Wednesday.

The world’s largest mutual funds provider Vanguard expects returns from the A-share market to be between 7.5 percent and 9.5 percent in the next decade, outshining all the other markets in the world.

Wang Qian, chief economist for Vanguard Asia-Pacific, said that China’s economic development will be more stable in the next few years as the problem of overcapacity has been properly addressed and more supportive macroeconomic policies are in place.

Lynda Zhou, chief investment officer in China for equities at Fidelity International, said the fund manager had an optimistic outlook on this year’s A-share market performance.

Over the past few years, China has been through economic restructuring featured by deleveraging and cutting overcapacity. As a result, the country’s annual GDP growth rate has been adjusted from the past double-digit figures to the current 5 percent to 6 percent. Such changes have exerted some negative impact on the stock market, she said.

“But as the more moderate GDP growth has become a new normal, the negative impact incurred by macroeconomic ups and downs on the A-share market will gradually subside in the next five to 10 years. A more stable A-share market will be conducive to higher-than-expected profits,” she said.

Fidelity estimates that foreign capital in excess of 300 billion yuan ($43 billion) flowed into the A-share market in 2019, accounting for nearly 7 percent of the total market value of the A-share market. That number is equal to the positions held by mutual funds last year.

The number of breakthroughs and reforms in the Chinese capital market last year, including the launch of the technology-focused STAR market in Shanghai, the introduction of registration-based initial public offering mechanism, and the revised securities law announced at the end of last year, will enable a mature, sustained development of the A-share market, said Zhou. Foreign capital will continue to flow, helping to adjust the valuation system of the A-share market, she said.

Cheng Hao, a fund manager at Fidelity China, said that apart from rate bonds, overseas investors have started to invest in debentures. Compared to the coupon in other markets, the rate bonds and debentures will continue to be attractive to foreign investors.

Ethan Wang, head of investment strategy for wealth management at Standard Chartered China, said that there will be more fiscal stimulus than favorable currency policies in China in the next few years. The fiscal incentives will be translated into investment opportunities. High-end manufacturing, technology and consumption will be the sectors that will see the most supportive policies, as China’s economic development is being increasingly driven by domestic demand.

Therefore, the A-share market will be the main investment target for Standard Chartered in its Asia strategy for the next six to 12 months, said Wang.

China Post launches design competition for upcoming stamps

China Post invited many noted artists, such as Zhou Lingzhao, Huang Yongyu and Han Meilin, to design stamps. Now it has taken one step further to engage members of the public with the process of creating and producing stamps, by launching a design competition to collect ideas for a set of special stamps to be issued in May.

The competition, announced on Sunday in Beijing, welcomes people to submit designs for postage stamps to be launched on May 20, a day celebrated by many young Chinese as a lovers’ day, as well as ideas for relevant merchandise products.

It’s not the first time that China Post has decided to include people into the work. At the same event held to launch the competition, it awarded a dozen of designers for contributing their ideas to diversify peripheral products of the Year of the Rat stamps.

Prize-winning designs include a rat-shaped stapler and a group of collectible toys each of which depicts a rat dressed in traditional costumes.

The Year of the Rat stamps, also officially issued on Sunday, were designed by Han Meilin whose zodiac animal is rat.

First national park will be officially established this year

China’s first national park in the Sanjiangyuan area of Northwest China’s Qinghai province will be officially established this year, Chinanews.com reported.

The country will have formed unique national park services, as well as management and research systems by 2025, the administration bureau of Sanjiangyuan National Park said at a press conference on Wednesday.

As part of a pilot project of 10 national parks initiated by the country in 2016 for ecological protection, Sanjiangyuan is the biggest, with a total area of 123,100 square kilometers. It contains the headstreams of the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Lancang River, as well as the rivers leading to the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve.

With an average elevation more than 4,700 meters, Sanjiangyuan is also the world’s highest area preserving a vast natural wetland.

According to Ren Yonglu, deputy director of the administration bureau, the environmental situation has been improved effectively in the past three years. Local water conservation rose 6 percent, grassland coverage jumped 11 percent and grass output jumped 30 percent.

The bureau is also trying a new model on ecological protection by hiring 17,200 people from local shepherd families to serve as licensed conservation workers to help manage the park. This also adds an average of 21,600 yuan ($3,116) to each family’s annual income.

By 2035, the national park is scheduled to become a role model of eco-protection, innovative mechanism and modernization.

His works, which often depict surrealist scenes, reflect individual experiences and also a collective feeling of social developments while addressing emerging issues such as overconsumption.

The exhibition also celebrates Chen’s productivity at work, trying on various mediums and styles and bringing his imposing art to not only art museums but also public spaces.

Tactical learning gap a bridge too far, laments Gao

National team’s ‘high school’ players were out of their depth with ‘college professor’ Lippi, claims striker

Veteran China international Gao Lin has likened the national team’s players to “high school students” who were unable to comprehend the tactics of their “college professor” ex-coach, Marcello Lippi.

Former World Cup winner Lippi resigned from the job for a second time in November following a disappointing start to China’s 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Italian and the players have come in for heavy criticism from fans, but in an interview with Tencent Sports this week, Gao attempted to deflect blame away from his former coach.

“Lippi can be considered a world-renowned professor and some sort of leader in the area. He has many strategies and good ideas,” said Gao.

“But for Chinese players, we are still like high school students. We might not fully understand the coach’s tactics or we are not capable of carrying out his tactical plans 100 percent.

“We must acknowledge that if players in the top-level European leagues are graduates or postgraduate students, we are not at that level yet… We have to face the gap directly and try our best to improve.”

Lippi delivered little to cheer about in his first term in charge, failing to steer the national team to the 2018 World Cup finals before resigning last January following more lackluster performances at the Asian Cup.

The 71-year-old was persuaded back as head coach in May, but submitted his resignation again in November, following a 2-1 defeat to Syria that has badly damaged China’s chances of reaching the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Last weekend, former China and Everton midfielder Li Tie was appointed as Lippi’s successor.

Gao, though, has cautioned that changes to the coaching staff can only go so far in turning around China’s fortunes on the pitch.

“Yes we can always have another new coach, but what actually matters is what kind of players the new coach can choose from,” said Gao.

“When a head coach has hundreds of high-level players to choose from, it’s easy for him to have great results. But if there’s just dozens to choose from, no one can make a real difference. Not even Lippi.”

At 33, Gao has started to think about life after his playing days end, with the Guangzhou Evergrande striker hopeful of pursuing a career in youth coaching.

“If I can coach a group of 8-and 9-year-old kids and be with them till they are 18 years old, and then watch them achieve big things in their professional career, I believe that would be the proudest achievement in my life,” said Gao, who won his first Chinese cap in 2005.

Talent pool

On Monday, the Chinese Football Association revealed its latest efforts to boost youth soccer. The governing body has established a talent pool of 64 players with the aim of analyzing the technical characteristics of Chinese players at different ages.

The players have been mainly selected from Chinese Super League clubs. The CFA said an additional eight young players will be “closely observed and assessed”, while a talent pool of young Chinese playing abroad is also in the pipeline.

“The CFA is trying to get an idea of the actual condition of Chinese soccer players and their technical characteristics,” read the CFA announcement.

“We will track the development of Chinese soccer players over longer terms to devise a better development process.”

Chris Van Puyvelde, the CFA’s technical director, believes Chinese soccer needs to inspire the next generation of coaches and players.

“I believe China has a big future in football, but it will take time,” said the Belgian last weekend following Li’s appointment as head coach.

“Go step by step and you will see the results. China has a big future, I’m sure of it. Otherwise, I would not be here.”

As well as youth development, the CFA has begun to recruit naturalized players in a bid to improve the national squad.

So far, the additions of Evergrande’s Brazil-born forward Ai Kesen (aka Elkeson) and Beijing Guo’an’s England-born utility player Li Ke (aka Nico Yennaris) have not quite had the impact many had hoped for.

However, Gao has urged fans to get behind the team’s new foreign-born recruits.

“When the naturalized players join us, we should just consider them as one of our own. And we should not always think too much about whether he’s naturalized or not,” said Gao.

“They have already become Chinese and they are our compatriots. There’s no difference.”

Van Puyvelde concurred, saying: “Naturalized or domestics, we are talking about the same players who want to win for the team. Players are the same.”

World’s worst measles outbreak kills over 6,000 in DR Congo

More than 6,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo have died of measles since an outbreak started last year, according to the World Health Organization.

Calling it the world’s worst measles epidemic, WHO has asked for more funding to stop the outbreak, adding around 310,000 suspected cases have been reported since January 2019.

“We are doing our utmost to bring this epidemic under control. Yet to be truly successful, we must ensure no child faces the unnecessary risk of death from a disease that is easily preventable by a vaccine. We urge our donor partners to urgently step up their assistance,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

While more than 18 million children under the age of 5 across the country were vaccinated in 2019, in some areas routine vaccination coverage remains low and 25 percent of reported measles cases are in children over 5, the UN agency said.

WHO said the epidemic has been aggravated by low vaccination coverage among vulnerable communities, malnutrition, weak public health systems and outbreaks of other epidemic-prone diseases.

This is in addition to poor infrastructure that has frustrated healthcare access for vulnerable populations and insecurity that has hampered response in some areas.

So far the organization has mobilized $27.6 million, but a further $40 million is required for a six-month plan to extend vaccination to children between six and 14 years of age.

The funds will also be used to reinforce elements of outbreak response beyond vaccination, including improving treatment, health education, community engagement, the health system, epidemiological surveillance and response coordination.

Dr. Amédée Prosper Djiguimdé, officer in charge of the WHO office in DR Congo, emphasized the need for more funding.

“We recognize the government’s engagement in efforts to end the outbreak and we are grateful for the generosity of our donors. But we still need to do more,” Djiguimdé said. “Thousands of Congolese families need our help to lift the burden of this prolonged epidemic from their backs. We cannot achieve this without adequate finances.”

The WHO is yet to completely contain the Ebola virus disease that has claimed over 2,200 lives since its outbreak in August 2018.

In the last weekly report covering the period from Dec 18 to 31, WHO reported 29 new confirmed cases of Ebola in North Kivu province.

Clayderman still in tune with his audience

When he first performed in China with five concerts in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong in 1992, French pianist Richard Clayderman and his team seemed out of tune with their surroundings and were not, initially, confident about the tour. You could say they were feeling off-key.

“The country was quite different compared with what it is today. There were no huge buildings and people dressed only in blue or gray. They looked curiously at us,” the pianist recalls. “However, once I stepped on stage in Beijing, there came a huge applause from an audience of nearly 20,000. They gave me the confidence to start a new career in this country.”

China is now the country where Clayderman performs the most. Since 1992, Clayderman, with his trademark blond hair and blue eyes, has held nearly 500 concerts in the country in nearly 100 cities. Every year, he gives about 50 concerts in China.

On Jan 18, the 66-year-old pianist will return to Beijing with a recital at the Great Hall of the People with some of his best known pieces, including Ballad for Adeline, A Comme Amour and Lyphard Melody. The recital is part of the ongoing 20th Meet in Beijing Arts Festival, one of the largest annual art festivals held in the capital from Jan 6 to Feb 4.

Clayderman will also perform adaptations of Chinese songs as well as interpreting some famous hits, both classical pieces and film themes, such as Star Wars and Les Choristes.

“I travel a great deal every year. One of my hobbies is to collect different kinds of music. In my repertoire, you can find music from every corner of the world, including my adaptations of Chinese songs,” he says.

Before his first trip to China, the pianist listened to several Chinese songs, and they had an immediate impact.

Butterfly Lovers, one of China’s most celebrated violin concertos, was one of Clayderman’s favorites and, naturally, he will perform the piece during his upcoming recital. He has performed it not only in China but also in other countries, including Australia, Canada and the United States.
