Guardiola confirms Foden will replace David Silva at Man City next season

The 19-year-old hasn’t featured as regularly as he may have liked since breaking into the first team, but next season is set to be a huge one for him

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City won’t be signing a replacement for David Silva, because he has faith in Phil Foden to fill his boots.

The legendary Spaniard is set to leave Manchester at the end of the 2019-20 season with 19-year-old Foden – known to some as the ‘Stockport Iniesta’ – finally set to get his big chance in the City first team.

Foden has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, though only one of his 11 Premier League outings has seen him on the pitch for more than an hour.

“Phil is an incredible player but he still has things to improve,” Guardiola told reporters. “Sometimes it takes time to understand exactly what he has to do, sometimes you have to be patient.

“But David is going to leave this season and we are not going to buy any player in his position because we have Phil.

“We trust Phil. If we didn’t believe in him, we might go to the market to replace David, but we have Phil.”

Guardiola has been criticised at times during his City tenure for his apparent unwillingness to play City’s youngsters, given the wealth of talent being honed at the Etihad Campus.

He has warned against English football’s propensity to overhype its young stars in response, with the likes of Eric Garcia, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tommy Doyle having had a taste of first-team football in recent weeks.

“I would like to help the young players here but this is a club that is so demanding,” Guardiola added. “You have to win games. Even when you win four titles here it isn’t enough – and that is the truth.

“We won four titles last season and it wasn’t enough because we didn’t win the Champions League.

“That is the reality – and the young players here have to compete against incredible central defenders and incredible midfielders.

“It is a tough reality that exceptional players like Phil Foden don’t play the minutes they should because we have other incredible players.”

Opportunities for City’s youngsters could be forthcoming at the end of January, with cup ties against Fulham and Manchester United.

City fielded a strong side for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final with United, and hold a healthy 3-1 lead going into the second game on January 29.

Malaga sack manager after explicit video causes 'serious damage'

The Spanish club have made the decision on disciplinary grounds after failing to reach an agreement for him to leave by mutual consent

Victor Sanchez del Amo has been sacked as Malaga head coach after an explicit video of him emerged on social media.

The 43-year-old was suspended by the Segunda Division club on Tuesday pending an investigation.

It was alleged Victor was blackmailed, with the former Real Madrid and Spain midfielder claiming he was the victim of extortion.

Malaga on Saturday announced they attempted to reach an agreement for a “friendly separation” with Victor, but fired him on disciplinary grounds after that was not possible.

Sergio Pellicer steps up to take charge of the first team while the club make a decision on a permanent successor to Victor.

A club statement said: “MCF has used best endeavours to attempt to resolve the situation amicably through intense negotiations with Víctor Sanchez del Amo.

“However, despite the ongoing and incessant efforts undertaken by the club, it has not been possible to reach a friendly separation.

“As such, MCF has made the decision to dismiss Víctor Sanchez del Amo due to disciplinary reasons, in accordance with the applicable regulations.

“MCF has made the decision, taking into account the serious damage caused to the institution by the recent events, aiming to minimise the impact on the team and the entire MCF organisation.

“Until a new coach is named, Sergio Pellicer will act as first team coach.”

Prior to Victor’s dismissal, Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales vowed to offer him a job should he get sacked.

“I had not been on Twitter for two months until the Victor Sanchez del Amo news,” he told El Larguero.

“I respect Malaga, but what they have [reportedly] done is a crime. If he loses work, I will offer him to come [to RFEF].

“I will talk to [RFEF sporting director, Jose Francisco] Molina and we will look for a professional job for him in the Federation. We will have open doors.”

Malaga are currently 16th in Spain’s second division with the club without a win in their past four matches in all competitions.

They next face Ponferradina in the league on Tuesday as they look to put recent off-field controversy behind them with a strong performance on the pitch.

Klopp reveals Firmino apology after securing Liverpool's win over Tottenham

He scored the only goal of the game but the Reds’ Brazilian striker was frustrated not to add to his tally

Jurgen Klopp says Roberto Firmino apologised for not adding to his decisive strike in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday.

The result means the Reds have now won 20 of their opening 21 Premier League games of the season to sit 16 points ahead of second-placed Leicester City at the summit.

That lead could be cut to 14 points if Manchester City overcome Aston Villa on Sunday, but Liverpool are firmly on course to be crowned champions of England for the first time in 30 years.

Firmino scored the only goal of the game after 37 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but the Brazil international was in a sheepish mood at the final whistle, according to his boss.

“When I went to him and wanted to give him a hug after the game, he wanted to stop and talk first,” Klopp said. “He said: ‘I know I should have scored more goals’. It was absolutely not what I wanted to say!

“It is true probably. He should have scored immediately with the first chance.

“He is a super player, super. I don’t say this for the first time and will hopefully not say it for the last time. [He’s] pretty impressive.”

Giovani Lo Celso squandered a golden opportunity to snatch a scarcely deserved point for Spurs in the closing stages.

It would have been harsh on a Liverpool side who had dominated for long periods, with Klopp keen to highlight his side’s impressive “fight” against Jose Mourinho’s men.

“We had to play for it and in the end we had to fight for it, really hard,” he said.

“We could have closed this game earlier; we should have I would say. The chances were clear. We had moments when we didn’t make chances, but they were ones I would say usually would have to be a 100 per cent chance.

“I think we played some exceptional football to bring in Andy Robertson on the touchline but then we didn’t find the free player or the defender blocked the last ball. We could have done better in these moments, but then it was only 1-0 and that’s normal.

“Against a team like Tottenham, it is not decided and in the end we needed luck in one situation and Alisson in two or three other situations.

“It was intense, really, but I think we deserved the three points. It was not our best game we played so far, but it was a very good one and, as I said, [we played] really good football in a lot of parts of the game and in the end a proper fight. All good.”

Liverpool are back in Premier League action next Sunday against bitter rivals Manchester United, who are the only side to have taken points from them this season.

Canadian Employment Bounces Back In December As Jobless Rate Drops To 5.6%

OTTAWA ― The Canadian economy added 35,200 jobs in December, fuelled by a gain in full-time jobs, to post the first monthly increase in jobs since September.

Statistics Canada said Friday the unemployment rate fell to 5.6 per cent for the final month of the year, compared with a rate of 5.9 per cent in November when the country lost 71,200 jobs, the biggest monthly loss of jobs since the financial crisis.

The federal agency’s monthly labour force survey said the increase in the number of jobs in December came as full-time employment rose by 38,400 jobs. The number of part-time jobs fell by 3,200.

The gain in jobs came as the number of private sector employees rose by 56,900, offset by a loss of 21,500 public sector jobs. The number of self-employed fell by 200.

The goods-producing sector added 15,700 jobs, helped by a gain of 17,000 jobs in the construction industry. Meanwhile, the services-producing sector added 19,400 jobs as the accommodation and food services industry gained 24,900 jobs.

Regionally, Ontario and Quebec led the job gains.

Ontario added 25,100 jobs in December, boosted by gains in construction and public administration. Quebec added 21,100 jobs in the month, helped by gains in the accommodation and food services sector as well as manufacturing.

Newfoundland and Labrador lost 5,000 jobs in December.

The Canadian economy added 320,300 jobs for all of 2019 including 282,800 full-time positions and 37,500 part-time jobs.

The jobs report came ahead of the Bank of Canada’s rate decision and monetary policy report later this month.

The central bank has kept its key interest rate on hold at 1.75 per cent for more than a year even as many of its international peers, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, have moved to cut rates and loosen monetary policy in response to weakness in the global economy.

The Bank of Canada has said that the Canadian economy has been resilient despite the global uncertainty caused by the trade war between the United States and China.

Former SNC-Lavalin Sami Bebawi Executive Sentenced For Fraud, Corruption

MONTREAL — Former SNC-Lavalin executive Sami Bebawi was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison Friday, wrapping up the last of the criminal charges brought against the engineering giant and its former employees involved in fraud and corruption in Libya.

Bebawi was impassive as he was sentenced by Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer, who explained he was opting for a penalty closer to the top of the scale given a number of aggravating factors in the case.

The 73-year-old had been defiant as he entered the courtroom for sentencing while pulling a carry-on suitcase.

When a reporter yelled out whether other managers from the engineering firm should be held to account and “fall on their swords,” he replied “definitely.”

A jury last month found the former head of SNC-Lavalin’s construction division guilty of paying kickbacks to foreign officials and pocketing millions as he worked to secure contracts for the company beginning in the late 1990s.

The case centred on several major infrastructure projects and dealings with Saadi Gadhafi, a son of late Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The jury also heard Bebawi tried to pay off a subordinate to change his testimony so he could avoid prosecution himself.

Cournoyer pointed to several factors, including the sophisticated nature of the fraud, the degree of planning and premeditation, and Bebawi’s behaviour after the infractions had been committed.

The federal prosecutors who brought the case to trial were satisfied with the sentence, saying it brought a message of deterrence and denunciation.

Crown prosecutor Anne-Marie Manoukian called it an “embarrassment for Canadian companies to act in that kind of behaviour.”

“Our Canadian obligations with regards to our treaties and with regards to what is an infraction in Canada, that is not the way that business should be done,” she said.

The Crown had sought nine years behind bars after a jury convicted Bebawi last month of five charges including fraud, corruption of foreign officials and laundering proceeds of crime.

“It is in fact very close to what we asked the court to impose,” Manoukian said.

“There were very many aggravating circumstances in this case and very few mitigating circumstances, as the judge stated.”

Bebawi’s defence lawyers — who did not address reporters after sentencing — had countered with a suggestion of a six-year prison sentence.

Handcuffed and sitting in the prisoners’ box after sentencing, Bebawi motioned reassuringly to family members in the courtroom.

The case returns to the court on Jan. 28 to discuss what to do with the proceeds of crime.

The sentence brings to an end a lengthy, federally led investigation and prosecution of the engineering firm and some of its employees.

In the days following the Bebawi verdict, the Montreal engineering giant also settled criminal charges on its business dealings in Libya, with its construction division pleading guilty to a single count of fraud and agreeing to a $280-million fine to be paid over five years and a three-year probation order.

The resolution brings the company closer to ending a long-standing scandal that tarnished its reputation and ensnared the highest office of the Canadian government in scandal for months.

“It’s nice to be able to close the chapter on a case that’s been going on since 2011,” Manoukian said. “To date, all the charges we have laid are all completed.”

'Bombardier Sold Us Lemons': New York Pulls Train Cars Over Safety Concerns

New York City’s transit authority has pulled nearly 300 newly delivered subway cars made by Bombardier Inc. due to safety concerns.

Two recent incidents “raised questions about the reliable operation” of the car doors, prompting the authority to remove all 298 of them from service Tuesday night, president Andy Byford said in a statement.

“As documented, the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) has identified repeated issues with Bombardier’s performance and finds this latest development unacceptable. We intend to hold the company fully accountable,” Byford said Wednesday.

The incidents caused no injuries and New York City Transit redeployed spare cars to service the morning rush hour, he said.

Byford, who also dealt with delays to Bombardier streetcar deliveries during his time at the helm of the Toronto Transit Commission, briefly suspended deliveries of the new cars last January, citing software issues and previous problems with springs between the cars and doors that were “weeping oil.”

Bombardier said two doors on cars in the New York City fleet “failed to function as intended” because they were not properly calibrated by the supplier.

“We are now inspecting all of the R179 cars and, where necessary, making adjustments to ensure the safe and reliable performance of the doors for the entire fleet,” spokeswoman Maryanne Roberts said.

She said the Montreal-based company is bringing in additional technicians to work “around the clock.”

New York City comptroller Scott Stringer slammed the MTA, which oversees transit in the state, for beleaguered deliveries that he called “unacceptable.”

“The New York City subway riders who foot the bill for the MTA’s $600-million contract with Bombardier were promised new, state-of-the-art train cars to help modernize our ailing transit system. Now, all the cars that were delivered so far have been pulled from service due to critical defects,” Stringer said in a statement.

Last month, the comptroller released an audit laying out how the contract became three years behind schedule, costing taxpayers millions more dollars.

Stringer noted Wednesday that the probe found “repeated failures to meet contract deadlines and requirements, poor project management and technical breakdowns, structural defects that delayed cars being put into service and several earlier structural problems that caused some of these trains to be pulled from service.”

“Bombardier sold us lemons. Strap-hangers need the MTA to manage these contracts from the beginning ― before the trains go off the rails,” he said.

‘Mourinho is intimidated by Liverpool & will park the bus’ – Spurs boss fears Reds, says Aldridge

The former frontman does not expect yhe Portuguese tactician to change his ways when Jurgen Klopp’s side take in a trip to Tottenham on Saturday

Jose Mourinho is “intimidated by Liverpool”, says former Reds star John Aldridge, and can be expected to “park the bus” once more when Tottenham play host to “the best team on the planet”.

Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League leaders are due in north London on Saturday.

That trip will be made with an unbeaten run through 20 games in 2019-20 taking the Reds 13 points clear in the title race.

Mourinho has made a habit of putting dents in Liverpool’s ambition down the years, with the Portuguese looking to do more of the same after taking the managerial reins at Spurs.

He is, however, not expected to change his ways for a reunion with old adversaries.

Mourinho’s success in previous posts has often been built from the back, with Aldridge predicting that the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss will avoid going toe-to-toe with Klopp this weekend.

The ex-Reds frontman told the Liverpool Echo of a meeting with Spurs: “They will allow to us have possession and try to break them down, no doubt that is how Mourinho will play because I think he is very intimidated by Liverpool.

“He has even come out and said Liverpool are the best team on the planet, which didn’t need underlining as we have already won the Club World Cup. He must have said it through gritted teeth.

“He’s not buttering us up as he knows Jurgen Klopp is not soft but it shows his mindset these days.

“Spurs are a good team and still have most of the players who got them to Champions League final last season but Liverpool are on a roll, are well used to teams who ‘park the bus’ and I hope and expect us to keep our winning run going.”

Liverpool will likely revert back to their tried and tested for a meeting with Spurs, having given promising youngsters another opportunity to impress in their FA Cup derby date with Everton.

Curtis Jones and Co secured a 1-0 victory in that contest, with Aldridge quick to salute the strength in depth that Klopp now has at his disposal.

He added: “It bodes really well for the future for Liverpool and not just the distant future.

“Liverpool still have a lot of football to play this season and these lads have now shown they are capable of doing a job when required.

“I would have no qualms whatsoever about seeing the likes of Neco Williams or Yasser Larouci given a run out in the Premier League, maybe with respect against one of the lesser-lights, if we wanted to give Trent [Alexander-Arnold] or Robbo [Andy Robertson] a rest.

“They showed against Everton they are more than able to do a job and, crucially, have the right mentality to deal with that step-up in class, which is arguably just as important as technical ability. The FA Cup tie was a big test for them but they hardly put a foot wrong and came through with flying colours.”
