While last year’s housing market took its time getting off the ground, 2020 could tell a different story.

Hopeful buyers are continuing to step back into the real estate ring after a period of adjustment against the federal government’s mortgage stress test, which was introduced in 2018.

In a Royal LePage House Price Survey released last week, aggregate home prices across Canada were reported to have increased by 2.2 percent year-over-year for Q4 2019, up to $648,544, as more buyers proceeded to move out of the wings.

In what was considered one of the biggest national housing market corrections since the 2008 Great Recession, the mortgage stress test left many would-be buyers in limbo. Some waited to gauge its impact while others were pushed out of the real estate market momentarily.

“For the most part, buyers have adjusted, yet it still represents a significant hurdle as families pursue the dream of owning their own home,” wrote Phil Soper, president and CEO of Royal LePage, in the report.

After a sharp dip in sales in the early phases of 2019, things finally turned a corner in the third and fourth quarter as interest rates remained low and labour markets strengthened across major cities.

“While the drop in the number of properties bought and sold during the 2018-19 downturn was large, the value of homes in Canada held up remarkably well, with only minor, single-digit declines in the areas of Ontario and B.C. that had experienced the most aggressive price inflation in recent years, and of course those regions still suffering from a downturn in the oil and gas sector,” stated Soper.

Should housing policies remain unchanged and economic conditions remain consistent, the Royal LePage forecast predicts prices Canada-wide will keep increasing in 2020 — 3.2 percent year-over-year to an aggregate price of $669,800.

If demand continues to trump supply in some cities, the spring market could also be a lively one.

Thanks to low supply and population growth, home prices continue to trend upwards in the Greater Toronto Area. While price growth was varied across the region, the aggregate price of a home increased to $843,609, a 4.8 percent boost year-over-year.

Condominiums are the fastest appreciating housing type across Canada, particularly in this area, where median condominium prices jumped by 7.8 percent year-over-year to $565,919. By comparison, two-storey homes increased by 4.4 percent to $982,944, and bungalow prices hiked upwards by 2.4 percent to a median price of $806,977.

Similarly, low inventory and a smaller rental market in Ottawa is driving up prices there. Bungalows were a hot-ticket item in Q4, with median prices spiking 10.1 percent year-over-year to $501,195.

“Ottawa’s real estate market saw healthy sales activity through December,” wrote Kent Browne, broker and owner of Royal LePage TEAM Realty. “If demand continues to outstrip supply, we expect to see further price growth this spring.”

An active spring market is predicted for Montreal too, which just saw its strongest appreciation rate in a decade — the aggregate home price reached $433,993, up 6.3 percent year-over-year.

A ‘perfect storm’

“We are currently in a ‘perfect storm’ for an exceptionally competitive spring market: interest rates are low; employment rates are healthy; listing inventory is limited; and, all buyer segments are active, including first-time buyers, baby boomers, newcomers and foreign buyers,” stated Dominic St-Pierre in the report, the vice president and general manager of Royal LePage in the Quebec region.

Vancouver was one of the hardest hit regions when the stress test took effect, with sales showing downward momentum. The Greater Vancouver Area still showed a year-over-year descent in Q4 2019, with the aggregate price of a home dropping by 4.8 percent to $1,107,719. Though, in the previous quarter, aggregate prices declined by 5.2 percent, which tells us that the market could be heading into recovery as sales volume inclines and inventory decreases.

“We’re likely to see some moderate price growth after last year’s decline in prices,” wrote Randy Ryalls, general manager of Royal LePage Sterling Realty. “The window of opportunity for buyers to get a deal is closing quickly for most typical buyers. There remain some excellent opportunities in the luxury market.”

The Redpath Waterfront Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer and they’re bringing the world’s largest rubber duck back to Toronto.

“Mama Duck” is 20-meters tall and weighs close to 29,000 pounds.

It made its first splash back in 2017, drawing in more than 750,000 people to the three-day festival and generating an estimated $7.6 million for Toronto’s economy.

Organizers say the cost to bring the duck back this year will be paid through the festival’s operating budget and not through grants or funds from the government.

The Redpath Waterfront Festival is scheduled to take place on June 19-21.

Additional programming for the event will be announced in the coming months, but Mama Duck is promised to be the star of the show.

A change in the dugout has been made at Camp Nou, with a man who led the club to back-to-back La Liga titles bidding farewell to the Catalan giants

Ernesto Valverde has bid a classy farewell to Barcelona, with a man who delivered back-to-back La Liga titles at Camp Nou wishing his successor Quique Setien well in the most demanding of roles.

At the end of a drawn-out process, which saw his future speculated on for some time, a proven winner has been removed from his role in the dugout with the Catalan giants.

With the decision taken to part with Valverde, the Blaugrana have passed their managerial reins on to former Real Betis boss Setien.

He is considered to fit the mould when it comes to embracing the philosophies of Johan Cruyff’s school of coaching.

Valverde did his best to stick to those principles following his appointment in 2017 and guided Lionel Messi and Co to four major trophies during his time at the helm.

Barca remain in contention for more silverware this season, as they sit top of the Liga table and through to the last 16 of the Champions League, but a first sacking in 17 years has been overseen.

Valverde could be forgiven for feeling a little hard done by, but the 55-year-old is walking away with his head held high and with great pride taken in what he achieved.

In an open letter to Barcelona supporters posted on the club’s official website, Valverde said: “My time as FC Barcelona coach has come to an end.

“It has been an intense two-and-a-half years right from the start. In that time I have enjoyed some joyful moments celebrating victories and trophies but also others that have been tough and difficult.

“However, above all I would like to highlight my experience with the fans and the affection showed towards me during my time as coach.

“I would like to thank the president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the board of directors for giving me the opportunity to coach the first team and their confidence during all this time.

“I would also like to thank all the people I have worked with at the club for their support and how they treated me during the two-and-a-half seasons, especially those who work in and around the first team and with whom I have shared so many moments at the Ciutat Esportiva and during away trips.

“Of course, I would like to thank the players for all their efforts that have allowed us to claim four trophies together.

“From this day, I wish them all the luck in the world and to the new coach Quique Setien also.

“All the best to everyone.

“Visca Barca and Visca Catalonia.”

Barcelona’s first outing under Setien will see them take in a home date with Granada on Sunday, while it remains to be seen what the future holds for Valverde now that he is back on the coaching market.

He has received plenty of messages of support, with Luis Suarez among the latest to pass on his well wishes.

The Uruguayan striker has thanked Valverde and his staff for all of their hard work and paid homage to the professionalism they displayed throughout an eventful tenure.

The Eagles boss has made it clear that he has no intention of parting with a prized asset, particularly in the middle of a Premier League season

Talk of Wilfried Zaha potentially leaving Crystal Palace for a loan spell at Bayern Munich has Roy Hodgson puzzled, with the Ivorian still very much part of the plans at Selhurst Park.

With another transfer window open, the rumour mill across Europe has been cranked up to overdrive.

Zaha is figuring prominently in gossip columns, with the 27-year-old forward having seen his stock rise again during a second spell with Palace.

He struggled to deliver on expectations after making a move to Manchester United in 2013, but is considered to be ready for another step up the ladder.

Palace are aware of the admiring glances being shot in the direction of their most prized asset.

Talk of interest from the likes of Chelsea and Bayern is never far away, with it even being suggested that Zaha could be allowed to head to Germany on a short-term deal which includes an option to buy.

Hodgson admits to being left bemused by such speculation, with there no intention on his part to sanction an agreement of any kind before the January deadline passes.

The Eagles boss told reporters when quizzed again on Zaha’s future: “A loan move to Bayern!?  Was it serious? Where did you get the story from?

“I’ll tell you what I’ll do, is Karl-Heinz Rummenigge still there?

“I’ll give Karl-Heinz a ring on that one, he’s a friend of mine from way back and I’ll say ‘is it true that you seriously have actually put in a bid to loan our best player so we go into the last part of the season without our best player. Is it true?’

“Next time, if he says yes, I’ll answer your question but I don’t think he will.”

Zaha, who has also been linked with a move across London to Tottenham, can expect to see his name remain in the headlines for the rest of the month.

Hodgson, though, has made it clear on a regular basis that no offers will be considered.

He has previously said: Wilfried Zaha is not for sale so I don’t need any assurances [from the board].

“We are not trying to sell Wilfried Zaha. We want to keep Wilfried Zaha.

“But what assurances can people give? I suppose I have the assurance there is no-one at the club anxious to sell Wilfried Zaha.

“Of course, you never know where bids are going to come from and I suppose every time there is a serious bid for one of your players the board of directors need to take it seriously.”

Retweeté plus de huit mille fois, l’appel au secours de Denis Brogniart a été entendu par les internautes le weekend dernier. Aidé d’une photo de son ami ainsi que du matériel qu’il transportait, Denis Brogniart a profité de sa popularité sur Twitter pour tenter d’aider les patrouilles de recherche à retrouver son ami.

Touché par les répercussions de son tweet, l’animateur de Koh-Lanta a remercié ses 385 000 followers, mais annoncé qu’il était malheureusement toujours sans nouvelle de son ami, disparu le 29 juin dernier. “Grand merci pour vos RT concernant mon ami Gérard toujours porté disparu dans les Pyrénées. Les recherches continuent,” a-t-il tweeté.

Twitter est peu à peu devenu pour les célébrités un puissant outil de communication avec leurs fans. Par le passé, d’autres stars ont déjà fait usage du réseau social pour en appeler à la solidarité des internautes: Cristina Cordula avait sollicité ses followers en mars dernier afin d’aider l’un de ses amis à retrouver sa fille disparue.

Après des mois de spéculations et d’attente, les fans de Céline Dion ont enfin une perspective. La chanteuse a révélé sur les réseaux sociaux la date de sortie de son prochain album.

Une saison au rythme de Céline Dion. Pour ceux qui suivent pas à pas les activités de la chanteuse, l’aventure qui a débuté par sa tournée en juin n’est pas près de se terminer. En effet, la star canadienne occupera le terrain médiatique jusqu’à la fin de l’été, au moins. Sur les réseaux sociaux, Céline Dion et son équipe ont annoncé ce lundi matin la date tant attendue de la sortie de son prochain album.

“Sortez vos agendas! C’est le 26 août que sera disponible le nouvel album Encore un soir” précise le message publié par la Team Céline. Le décès de René Angélil et le deuil de la star avait repoussé la sortie de ce nouvel opus en français. Pour écrire la suite de son histoire après la tristesse, “Céline y a choisi des thèmes positifs tournés vers la vie”. Son 15e album en français portera en tout cas le titre symbolique d’Encore un soir, le morceau composé par Jean-Jacques Goldman. Comme on le savait déjà, l’entourage de Céline Dion confirme que dans cet opus, elle “retrouve d’anciens collaborateurs, mais a aussi fait appel à de nouveaux partenaires”. Notamment Zaho, Florent Mothe et le duo français Mutine.

L’attente des fans de l’interprète de Pour que tu m’aimes encore va donc bientôt toucher à sa fin. Pour patienter encore un peu jusqu’au 26 août, il est désormais possible de pré-commander l’album et d’en apprendre déjà, la playlist. Quinze titres composent ce disque entièrement chanté en français. On y retrouve la reprise d’Ordinaire, la chanson de Robert Charlebois, Plus qu’ailleurs composé par Francis Cabrel mais également À la plus haute branche de Daniel Picard qui a été choisi parmi plus de 4000 chansons à l’occasion d’un concours lancé sur le site de Céline Dion.

Si l’ex-enfant star devenu musicien dément les rumeurs de dépendance à l’héroïne, il n’explique pas son changement physique de l’époque. En réponse au journaliste du Guardian qui lui demande s’il aimerait un jour raconter ce qui s’est passé à cette période, il se contente de répondre : « Peut-être ».

Zoe Saldana le révèle cette semaine dans les pages de The Edit: elle est atteinte d’une grave maladie auto-immune, appelée la thyroïdite de Hashimoto.

Thyroïdite de Hashimoto. Voilà le nom barbare d’une maladie bien peu connue et dont souffre Zoe Saldana. L’actrice a révélé cette semaine dans les pages de The Edit souffrir de cette maladie auto-immune, découverte par le corps médical il y a à peine 100 ans. “Votre corps n’a pas l’énergie suffisante pour filtrer les toxines, ce qui lui fait croire à une infection, résume l’actrice. Vous créez des anticorps qui attaquent vos glandes, c’est pour ça que vous devez manger sain.” Celle qui a été découverte avec son rôle de Neytiri dans le blockbuster Avatar raconte qu’elle a dû modifier son hygiène alimentaire, en supprimant d’abord tous produits laitiers, puis en enlevant le gluten de sa nourriture.

Mais cela ne fait pas tout. Car comme son nom l’indique, la thyroïdite de Hashimoto s’attaque à la thyroïde, une glande hormonale essentielle au bon fonctionnement de notre corps. Un problème de thyroïde peut entraîner chez le patient qui en souffre une grande fatigue, une faiblesse musculaire, une prise de poids importante ou encore une dépression.

Héréditaire, la thyroïdite de Hashimoto était déjà présente dans la famille de Zoe Saldana. Sa mère et ses deux sœurs souffrent elles aussi de cette affection. “Je me suis bien amusée lorsque j’étais adolescente, se souvient l’actrice. Puis le docteur vous explique que vos os perdent du calcium. Mais qu’est-ce que c’est que ça? J’entends encore les conversations de ma mère et de ma grand-mère, désemparées. Je pensais être invincible! Mais ça vous tombe dessus comme ça, du jour au lendemain.”

Malgré cela, Zoe Saldana garde le cap et affiche une carrière impeccable. Actrice principale de trois grandes sagas cinématographiques (Avatar, Gardiens de la Galaxie et Star Trek), elle est également à l’affiche de Nina, un biopic consacré à la vie de Nina Simone.

Le mannequin de Victoria’s Secret Adriana Lima a été vue très intime avec le footballeur américain Julian Edelman. Sauf que l’ex de ce dernier serait a priori enceinte de lui depuis cinq mois, selon le site TMZ. Une nouvelle qui pourrait bien secouer le début de leur relation.

Le mannequin de Victoria’s Secret Adriana Lima en sait quelque chose. Celui que le site américain TMZ soupçonne très fortement d’être son nouvel amoureux, le footballeur américain Julian Edelman, aurait récemment appris que son ex, le top model Ella Rose, attend un enfant de lui. Une drôle de manière de commencer une nouvelle relation.

Alors qu’Adriana Lima vient de séparer du chanteur star de R&b Joe Thomas, plus connu sous le nom de Joe, après un peu plus d’un an de relation, il semblerait que Julian Edelman soit son nouveau hobbie. D’après les informations de TMZ, les deux ne seraient pas tout à fait en couple, mais les photos reçues à la rédaction les montrent très intimes. En tout cas, s’ ils voulaient démarrer sereinement une relation sérieuse, c’est un peu raté. Ella Rose, déjà enceinte de cinq mois, a déposé les papiers à la police de Los Angeles annonçant la paternité de Julian Edelman, qu’elle aurait fréquenté pendant plus de deux ans malgré le caractère non officiel de leur relation.

La vie amoureuse d’Adriana Lima, présente au dernier festival de Cannes, est décidément bien mouvementée. Après avoir fréquenté son prof de boxe, puis son coach sportif, la Brésilienne a entretenu une relation avec le chanteur Lenny Kravitz. Ensuite, avec le basketteur américain Marko Jaric, elle a donné naissance à une fille, en 2009, avant de se séparer trois ans plus tard. Après Joe Thomas, voici donc Julian Edelman… Peut-être pas pour longtemps…
