French musical gala concert to hit Beijing stages

A total of 30 classic songs selected from more than 10 French musicals will be presented at a gala concert at Beijing Exhibition Centre Theatre on April 10 and 11.

Delighting audiences with songs from musicals including “The Notre Dame,” “Mozart L’opera Rock” and “Le Petit Prince,” the concert is expected to offer a glimpse of classic French musicals in different periods.

Featuring musical stars like Mikelangelo Loconte, who portrayed Mozart in “Mozart L’opera Rock,” the concert will enable singers and bands to share the stage.

The concert will also tour Chinese cities including Nanjing, Xi’an and Suzhou in April this year.

Barcelona leapfrogs Madrid in ‘Money League’

LONDON-Barcelona has overtaken Real Madrid to top the Deloitte Football Money League for the first time and become the first club to break the 800 million euros ($890 million) revenue barrier.

The 23rd edition of the table shows an 11 percent rise in combined revenues, excluding transfer fees, for the top 20 clubs who enjoyed combined turnover of a record 9.3 billion euros for the 2018-19 season.

Real Madrid has dropped to second, generating income of 757.3 million euros, while Manchester United remains third.

Arsenal has slipped out of the top 10 for the first time.

Barcelona’s rise to the top with income of 840 million euros is a clear sign of “a club adapting to changing market conditions” by bringing merchandising and licensing activities in-house, according to Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.

“Barca has reduced the reliance on broadcast revenue and is focusing on growing revenues within its control,” he said.

“With the club expecting further growth of 30 million euros in commercial revenues and total revenue of almost 880 million in 2019-20 we expect them to retain the top spot next year.

“Barca is on course to achieve its stated ambition to be the first one billion Money League club in years to come.”

Bayern Munich remains in fourth position, with Paris Saint-Germain entering the top five ahead of Manchester City.

Champions League winner Liverpool is seventh, one place ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, which the Reds beat in the final.

Tottenham’s 521.1 million euros income pushes it ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal, making it London’s highest revenue-generating club for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

Once again the Premier League’s eye-watering television broadcast deals have enabled it to dominate the Money League with eight clubs inside the top 20.

Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s Bundesliga both have three, while Italy’s Serie A has four. Juventus is the highest-placed Serie A club, in 10th, while the Turin giant’s domestic rival Napoli has moved into the top 20.

Juve’s revenue increased 17 percent to 459.7 million euros, helped by the arrival of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. PSG and Lyon are the only representatives of France’s Ligue 1 on the list.

While Jones says revenue growth in Europe’s big soccer leagues continues to outpace other sectors, mainly because of broadcasting rights, there is a marked concentration of increase at the top-the combined revenue of the top five clubs is greater than the combined total of the clubs ranked 10th to 20th.

“What is notable in this edition of the Money League is the apparent continuing emergence of ‘mini-leagues’ within the Money League,” he said. “The largest revenue-generating clubs continue to pull away from the rest.”

The highest-ranked club outside the big five leagues is the Netherlands’ Ajax, in 23rd place.

Lhasa to see during winter

Many travelers deem Lhasa to be only a summer resort, but the local government has rolled out a series of favorable tourism policies to publicize its unique winter charms.

Many scenic spots in the capital of the Tibet autonomous region offer free or discounted tickets during the winter period, including the Potala Palace and Norbulingka Summer Palace.

Costs for all “star-rated” international and boutique hotels in Tibet, along with various flights to the region, will fall by at least half compared to those during peak tourism seasons.

Businesses organizing group tours to Tibet via chartered flights and special tourism trains will be rewarded with monetary incentives.

The policies will be in effect until March 15, according to Tibet’s tourism development department.

This is the third year since Lhasa kicked off its winter-tourism policy.

The region received 2.46 million domestic and overseas tourists from Nov 1, 2018, to March 15, 2019, an increase of 84.2 percent year-on-year.

Income from tourism reached nearly 2.62 billion yuan ($370 million), up 41 percent year-on-year, during the period, according to the department.

Lhasa enjoys sunny days and starry nights in winter, when snowcapped mountains and more than 130 bird species can be observed. Several major folk festivals and Buddhist celebrations also take place during the colder months, adding spice to travelers’ experience.

The local government has launched a “tourism loop” that covers folk traditions, customs and natural landscapes to enable travelers to experience all that Lhasa has to offer.

Barcelona were 'naive' & 'disrespectful' in how they handled Valverde sacking – Rivaldo

The Brazilian says his former club “didn’t deal well with the change of manager”, with Quique Setien the latest man to step into the Camp Nou hot seat

Barcelona were “naive” and “disrespectful” in how they handled Ernesto Valverde’s sacking, according to Rivaldo.

Valverde’s three-year reign at Camp Nou came to an end on Monday when the club decided to relieve him of his managerial duties.

The Blaugrana announced ex-Real Betis boss Quique Setien as his successor, on a deal set to run through to 2022.

Valverde guided Barca to back-to-back Spanish titles, but a number of high-profile failures in cup competitions ultimately undermined his achievements in La Liga.

The 55-year-old was heavily criticised after a Champions League semi-final defeat to Liverpool last season, which was followed up by a Copa del Rey final loss against Valencia.

Barca were also beaten in a Supercopa de Espana semi-final tie by Atletico Madrid last week, which proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Valverde.

Rivaldo believes the Spanish champions could have avoided a disruptive changing of the guard had they lined up a “back-up manager”, with club legends Xavi and Ronald Koeman thought to have turned down the chance to return to Camp Nou.

“It’s clear that Barcelona didn’t deal well with this change of manager,” the ex-Barca midfielder told Betfair. “They were a little naive and perhaps disrespectful with Valverde; it is never a positive action to start negotiating with a new manager while the current one is still working.

“Of course, Xavi and Ronald Koeman rejecting their proposals also added to that problem creating lots of speculation, before they finally announced Quique Setien.

“Football is a cut-throat business, of course, but we all know that the process wasn’t well driven by Barca’s board. Clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid should always have back-up managers in order to avoid such situations.

“Yes, it isn’t pretty to talk to other managers before really wanting to sign them, but if you manage to identify one or two realistic targets who probably accept an offer when it comes, you can avoid these kind of tough situations.”

Rivaldo went on to express his belief that Xavi will “wait for the right moment” before accepting the top job at Camp Nou, while he continues to gain valuable coaching experience in the middle east.

“I’m convinced that Xavi will sign as Barcelona manager in the future and he is already getting prepared for that, starting his managerial career in Qatar, ” Rivaldo said.

“I think he turned down Barca’s offer because he’s not yet ready to embrace such a task in an early phase of his new job as a manager. For now, he prefers to keep gaining experience and maturity as a coach.

“But while he didn’t accept such responsibility now and will wait for the right moment, I’m sure he would be Barca’s coach someday and hopefully with success.

“In the case of Koeman, it’s different. He is an experienced manager with an international reputation and would have been a very good option.

“He is well known worldwide, has a good knowledge of the club and is used to big pressure like he will find in the Champions League and other competitions. But it didn’t turn out to be the time for his comeback.”

'I remember when Guardiola explained the false nine' – Messi talks through positional evolution at Barca

The Argentine was asked to play a novel role that few could grasp at first, but his ability to adapt saw his old head coach’s tactics pay off

Lionel Messi has opened up on his evolution as an attacker, detailing his early days as a second striker with boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys all the way to becoming the most feared right-winger on the planet via Pep Guardiola’s introduction of the ‘false nine’ at Barcelona.

Messi is most commonly associated with playing on the right side of a front three – the Blaugrana continuing to take advantage of the Argentine’s ability to cause chaos as he cuts in from wide onto his preferred left foot.

And while many look at the 32-year-old as a player who could easily shine in most roles on the pitch, Messi revealed that his positional evolution generally came through good management – especially in his earlier years.

“I got to play one or two years of 11-a-side football in Argentina with Newells, and there I played behind the playmaker,” Messi told La Liga on DAZN.

“When I arrived at Barca we had a 3-4-3 formation, which was tricky for me because I was playing in the upper part of the diamond.

“I was a playmaker used to what I’d been doing since I was little, moving around with a lot of freedom. And sometimes I played on the wing.”

Upon his graduation to the first team, Barca’s ranks were bursting with world-class talent, meaning a young Messi was again played out of position for his debut under then-boss Frank Rijkaard. The choice to do so, however, led to other teams copying the idea.

“The reality is that I didn’t have another choice and I was put onto the right,” he said.

“Rijkaard played me on the right, which was a completely new position for me. I’d never played there before. I had to start off on that side, and I slowly got used to it.

“I was delighted, because I was playing – and what you want is to play, wherever it is. I slowly grew fond of that position.

“I got used to it quickly actually, because playing on my opposite foot meant I could bring it onto my strong foot when I went inside, and it was easy for me to cut in and have a view of the pitch ahead of me. I quickly got used to it in that sense.

“At that time, we played with [Ludovic] Giuly, Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho, and then I began to come into the side. Later on, I began to be used much more, and it was more common to see inverted wingers.”

One of the most famous roles played by Messi is the ‘false nine’, a position introduced by Guardiola ahead of a headline El Clasico date with Real Madrid – and one that sparked plenty of discussion due to the novel nature of the tactic.

“I remember that it was a surprise for me, because I was called up the day before the game, was made to go to Guardiola’s office at the Ciutat Esportiva, and I was told that he had been watching Madrid’s games a lot, as he did with every opponent.

“He had been talking with Tito Vilanova and they had thought about me playing as a false nine. He was going to put Samuel and Thierry Henry on the outside, and I was going to play as the false centre forward.

“I wasn’t going to stay there, but rather come out and join up with the central midfield. The idea was that Madrid’s centre backs would follow me out, and the two fast wingers that we had would go around the back.

“In fact, one of Henry’s goals was like that. It was a surprise for us and for Madrid. I remember that we had a lot of possession, and we always had an extra man in the middle of the park.

“I’d never played as a centre forward, but I knew that position because it meant coming through from deep to get forward, without being a static number 9. It wasn’t a big change for me. I’d been playing on the outside for years, and so I knew what that position was about.”

Now entering the final years of his career at the very top, Messi says he is still adapting his game to suit the needs of the team.

“I’ve got used to playing a little deeper in recent years, picking the ball up and joining up with the midfielders to have more possession.

“That also happened when we didn’t have Xavi or Andrés Iniesta anymore, as with them we had a lot of possession during the entire game.

“When they weren’t there I began to drop back a little more to try to get numerical superiority, always with the idea of arriving and trying to score as well.”

Messi: I think less and less about scoring goals every day

The Argentine is widely regarded as one of the finest finishers of his time, but he is starting to take a step back from being the main man in the box

Barcelona star Lionel Messi claims that he thinks “less and less” about scoring goals as he enters the twilight years of his career, instead focusing more on reading games as a whole in order to affect the action in a way that is more beneficial for the team.

Messi has broken countless scoring records throughout his career, perhaps most notably having become the all-time leading scorer in La Liga, and is widely lauded as one of the greatest finishers in the history of the game.

The Argentine is closing in on the final years of his senior career, however, with his 33rd birthday arriving in June, and he admits that he is starting to “step back” more often these days and offer others the chance to apply the finishing touch.

“I think less and less about scoring goals,” Messi told La Liga on DAZN. “I’m starting to step back more and more to be the creator rather than the one who finishes.

“Obviously I like scoring and If have a chance I’ll take it, but every time I go on to the pitch I’m less focused on scoring goals and more focused on the game. I’ve never been obsessed with goals.

“I understand that people will talk about it when I stop scoring so many, but that’s part of the game, part of growing as a player and adapting to the times, to be the best player both for yourself and for the team.”

But while Messi will always be looked at to produce a piece of individual magic that could settle a match in his team’s favour, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner admits to having gone through a frustrating drought upon his promotion to the first team at Camp Nou.

“There was a time I didn’t score many goals,” he said. “I always scored goals both for Argentina and for Barcelona’s youth team, but I had a hard time scoring during the first few years I played in the first team. I would either make mistakes or I was unlucky.

“I had so many chances but I couldn’t score, until one day everything clicked and the ball started going in. It took me a few years before that happened.

'It will last forever' – Messi speaks openly about 'special duel' with Ronaldo

The Argentine superstar reminisced over the famous battle with his Portuguese nemesis

Lionel Messi believes his ‘special’ La Liga duel with Cristiano Ronaldo will ‘last forever’ in people’s minds despite his rival’s switch to Serie A.

With Messi the figurehead at Barcelona and Ronaldo spearheading Real Madrid from 2009 until 2018, the two attacking superstars dominated world football to win all but one of the last 12 Ballon d’Or awards – with only Luka Modric managing to break the duopoly in 2018.

Messi feels the longevity and intensity of his rivalry with Ronaldo was a highlight and that fans will not easily forget their battles even though the Portuguese is now plying his trade for Italian giants Juventus.

“It was a duel that will last forever because it went on for many years, and it isn’t easy to keep at your highest level for so long – especially at those two clubs we were at, which were so demanding, in Madrid and Barca, the best in the world,” Messi told La Liga on DAZN.

“Competing head to head for so many years will be remembered forever. The sporting rivalry between us was very nice on a personal level. I think that the fans also enjoyed it, be they Madrid or Barca supporters, and those who just like football will also have enjoyed it.”

Despite a four-year drought, Messi won his sixth Ballon d’Or in 2019 to go one ahead of Ronaldo, who has claimed the prestigious honour on five occasions.

During Ronaldo’s time in the Spanish capital, Messi scored 472 goals in 476 appearances across all competitions, while his Madrid foe hit 450 goals in 438 matches.

Messi remembers fondly the times he took on Ronaldo and said Barcelona’s Clasico matches against Madrid were more important when the Portugal international was playing in them.

“When Cristiano was at Madrid, games against them were always special,” the Argentina captain said.

“Real Madrid, because of what those games mean, made it much more special, but those times are behind us and things go on.”

Man Utd want title challenge next season, but it might not be realistic – Solskjaer

The Red Devils are well off the pace set by Liverpool this term, but their manager is hoping to make up that gap in 2020-21

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said his aim is for Manchester United to challenge for the Premier League title next season, even though he admits it may not be realistic.

Having last won the Premier League in 2012-13 under Sir Alex Ferguson, United will once again have to settle for a top-four battle this term with Liverpool well ahead of the pack.

Solskjaer’s side are in fifth place, five points behind fourth-place Chelsea, but a massive 27 points off the pace of Jurgen Klopp’s table-toppers.

That gap comes one season after United finished in sixth place, 32 points behind rivals Manchester City as they won their second straight title.

Ahead of his side’s visit to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday, the United boss said that catching up to the Premier League’s elite has to be the goal – though it appears to be a lofty one at this stage.

“That is the aim, of course,” Solskjaer told reporters. “I’m not saying it is a realistic one. We are behind and a fair rate behind the top one now, who we play on Sunday and we’ll see where we are against them.

“But with a few signings, with the improvement these are making, in the next couple of years we want to do that.

“Supporters and the club alike are not happy with not challenging for the top position in the league. That is where we feel we should be and many of today’s supporters have lived that period where we won the league consistently.”

Before taking on Liverpool, United host Wolves at Old Trafford in an FA Cup third-round replay on Wednesday.

With the Premier League title out of reach this term, winning one of the three competitions United are still in – the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League – is the club’s only chance at silverware this term.

Though Solskjaer conceded that winning those competitions is not the main aim of a club like Manchester United, they must focus on what is realistic and hope that a cup win can spark them to bigger and better things.

“At the moment we don’t have that type of team,” Solskjaer said. “Because in time we’ve been a bit behind the top ones. It might be that we start with winning a cup and then these players will get that taste.

“That is not what we want to be. We want to be challenging for the league and the Champions League.”

Spike In Canadian Households Going Bust 'Just The Tip Of The Iceberg': CAIRP

TORONTO ― A national association of insolvency and restructuring professionals expects personal insolvencies will grow in 2020 after the rate of filings increased 8.9 per cent in November over the same 12-month period the previous year.

The Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals says the number of people struggling with debt in November is “just the tip of the iceberg.”

Watch: All the ways Canadians are now totally different from Americans, financially. Story continues below.

Association board member Andre Bolduc says most people wait until they’ve reached the breaking point before seeking help, making it harder for them to dig their way out.

The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy says almost 136,000 Canadians became insolvent over the 12-month period, up from 125,000 in the prior year.

However, the number of personal filings in November was 10 per cent lower than in October at 11,821.
