Sales of 5G phones to take off in 2020

The 5G phones will cost less than 1,500 yuan by the end of this year, and their sales are expected to exceed 4G phones in 2020, said a report by China Mobile.

Wang Hengjiang, deputy general manager of China Mobile Terminal Company, said the 5G phones will witness a market explosion with a scale of over 150 million units this year, and more than 10 phone brands plan to release 5G phones in 2020, creating about 100 new phone models.

In the first quarter, from January to March in 2020, phone vendors will release high-priced flagship 5G phones, and the price will fall to around 2,000 yuan in the second quarter.

The 5G phone is expected to cost less than 1,500 yuan in the fourth quarter, priced at 1,000 to 1,500 yuan, according to China Mobile.

The latest report by research firm International Data Corporations said Huawei will lead the global 5G phone market by shipment in 2020, followed by Apple and Samsung.

As the global and domestic smartphone market face continuous contraction in previous three years, China’s ambitious 5G plans are regarded as a driving engine to stimulate phone shipments in 2020, IDC said.

“Recent developments in the China market along with anticipation of aggressive activity from the smartphone supply chain and OEMs have caused us raise our short-term 5G forecast,” said Ryan Reith, program vice-president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. “There is little doubt that China will quickly become the lead market in terms of 5G volume.”

IDC research noted that smartphone shipment in China will record 0.7 percent growth in 2020, fueled by its 5G industry, ending a three-year-decline in smartphone shipment.

Mobile phone shipments in China fell to 389 million units, a 6.2 percent drop in 2019, while the 5G phones registered comprehensive growth, with 13 million units shipped last year, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

Trump impeachment trial possibly days away as Democrats meet

WASHINGTON-The Senate trial of US President Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction could open within days as House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi convened Democrats early on Tuesday to discuss sending impeachment charges to the Senate.

Pelosi appeared ready to move ahead after holding onto the articles of impeachment since they were passed on December 18. In the meantime, House Democrats have tried to pressure the Republican-controlled Senate to agree to subpoena witnesses with direct knowledge of what Trump is charged with: Illicitly seeking help from Ukraine for his 2020 reelection campaign.

But with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refusing to agree up front on the witness issue, Pelosi is now expected to forward the case without a deal and see the president placed on trial by next week.

Pelosi’s House Democratic caucus was expected to discuss the schedule for a full vote in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber, on forwarding the case.

The Democratic representatives also were likely to decide who will comprise their team of impeachment managers to argue the case against Trump in the Senate, the upper chamber.

Once the House forwards the charges, the Senate is obliged to begin trial proceedings within one day.

On the first day, senators will decide the rules of the historic trial.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will then be sworn in to preside. In turn, he will swear in the 100 senators to preside as judges and jury over Trump’s fate.

Republican Senator John Cornyn told The Hill news website that he expects all that could happen this week, and that opening arguments in the trial could take place as early as Tuesday, Jan 21, after Monday’s federal holiday.

“That’s what it feels like right now,” Cornyn said.

Trump’s Republican Party members hold a solid majority of seats in the Senate and are expected to exonerate him.

But the witness issue remains a point of contention.

Democrats want at least four current and former top Trump aides to appear at the trial. Trump barred them from testifying in the House impeachment investigation.

They also want documents related to the charges that Trump refused to hand over to the House probe.

The witnesses and documents, Democrats believe, could deliver more concrete evidence that Trump abused his powers for personal political gain and obstructed the congressional investigation.

But McConnell, backed by the Republicans’ 53-47 Senate majority, said he won’t agree on the issue before the trial opens.

In this case, with defendant Trump’s own Republican Party in control of the Senate, which sets the rules for the case, Pelosi has little real leverage outside of public pressure.

Democrats are hoping that three or more Republican senators will break ranks to insist hearing from the witnesses.

“House Democrats have already done enough damage to precedent, to national unity, and to our institutions of government,” McConnell said in a statement on Monday.

“The Senate will not be sucked into this precedent-breaking path.”

Barcelona don't need to sign a Suarez replacement as they have Griezmann, says Poyet

The former midfielder thinks that the Frenchman is more than capable of playing in attack as the Catalans look to deal with the Uruguayan’s absence

Gus Poyet does not think that Barcelona need to panic buy and sign a replacement for Luis Suarez in the January transfer window, with Antoine Griezmann capable of stepping in for the injured Uruguayan striker.

Suarez will be out injured for four months leaving the Catalan giants short in attack, with Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, who is the club’s primary target, only a realistic option for the summer.

And former Real Zaragoza midfielder Poyet thinks that Griezmann, who has yet to hit top form at Camp Nou since his move from Atletico Madrid, is an excellent option to replace Suarez in attack.

“The Suarez situation is 100 per cent similar to Harry Kane’s injury at Tottenham, there is no difference,” Poyet said at the launch of LaLiga TV in London. “The problem at Barcelona is that they can’t find a player who accepts to sit on the bench until the day that Suarez is not playing.

“They couldn’t find that guy. They have a player in the club who can replace him in Griezmann so I wouldn’t be too desperate to find a striker. It is a matter of what Quique Seiten wants.”

Barcelona have made the decision to replace Ernesto Valverde, who had won two successive league titles and had Barca sitting top of La Liga on goal difference, with Quique Setien and Poyet thinks getting Lionel Messi on side will be one of the main priorities for the new head coach.

“It is quite surprising to see the change of manager but it happens these days,” he added. “Seitan has a very, very clear philosophy of football. He was always talking about Johan Cruyff with his style of play and approach.

“All us coaches like to get to that point [of being able to handle different egos] and then we try to make our philosophy work. You don’t know if it will work, though. When you get Messi in front of you then you need to sort out the problem of connecting with him to get the best out of him.

“In saying that, it is his time as well. It depends on the next four months as then there’s presidential elections next year and you never know what happens with the coach after that.”

Poyet also commented on fellow countryman Federico Valverde’s emergence at Real Madrid, with the 21-year-old hitting the headlines for his red card that denied Alvaro Morata and Atletico Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana final.

“It was nice to see Uruguayan players making a foul from behind, we never did it before and won’t do again,” Poyet joked. “He is a terrific player, a great boy. He is very calm and down to earth. He wants to play his football, he tried away from Madrid to go on loan and do something different.

“Everyone was talking about other players coming to Madrid but he has worked slowly to make it difficult for Zidane to pick his three midfielders. Valverde is constantly pushing with Kroos and Modric. For Uruguay seeing him play in Madrid is something extraordinary.

“I have met him; It is something we haven’t seen for many years – a Uruguayan playing in Madrid.”

Man City transfer targets: Dias, Chilwell, Lautaro & players linked with the club

All the latest Man City transfer news, rumours, quotes, gossip and done deals for the January 2020 transfer window

Pep Guardiola has previously ruled out the possibility of Manchester City signing a new defensive player in the wake of Aymeric Laporte’s injury, but he still could be tempted to dip into the market for added cover.

The Blues have struggled to replicate last season’s title-winning form, falling behind to Premeir League leaders Liverpool, who have taken the top-flight by storm.

Instead, Guardiola’s side are battling it out for second place in the table with Leicester City and setting their sights on a first-ever Champions League trophy.

Goal will keep you updated with all the latest transfer news – with insight from our Man City correspondent Jonathan Smith – and rumours and gossip surrounding the Citizens’ transfer activity and potential arrivals in January.

Top Man City transfer targets

Man City are not currently looking to make major signings in the January transfer window, instead preferring to look ahead to the summer – just like Liverpool and Arsenal.

This could change, however, should they suffer an injury setback, with the club prioritising the need for a new centre-back once the season finishes.

Beyond the January transfer window, Benfica’s Ruben Dias has been eyed by the Manchester club, alongside Juventus defender Merih Demiral.

They could also additionally be in the market for a left-back, with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell – who has impressed this season – having been looked at.

Should Leroy Sane leave for Bayern Munich, which is looking increasingly likely, the club could move for Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal.

Inter star Lautaro Martinez has also been touted as a transfer target to supply the squad with striking reinforcements.

Sane could snub Bayern

Leroy Sane is, according to the Metro, having second thoughts over leaving Manchester City and could commit to a new contract.

The Germany international winger has been heavily linked with a return to his homeland at Bayern Munich, but may snub those advances.

Arteta rubbishes Stones talk

Mikel Arteta has rejected speculation linking John Stones with a switch to Arsenal.

Reports had claimed that the Gunners were lining up a loan move for the Manchester City centre-back as they looked to ease their defensive woes.

But Arteta has rejected the speculation, telling reporters: “No truth at all.”

Citizens to let Aguero to depart club on his own accord

The Mail report that the defending Premier League champions are to allow the Argentina striker to decide when and how he leaves the Etihad, owing to his prolific success at the club.

Aguero’s contract runs out at the end of next season, and with the striker now 33 years of age, seems to be a fitting time to leave the side.

Potential Man City exits

Sane is expected to leave the club to return to his native Germany to join Bayern, despite the club ruling out a bid for the forward in January.

Guardiola, however, refused to be drawn in to discussions on the Germany international’s future, stating:  “It’s a question for Leroy, his agents and the club. I am not involved.

“What’s important now is that he recovers well. After that, he knows what we believe in him, what we think of him and the rest is up to him and the club.”

Leeds are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Ian Poveda according to Leeds Live, set to replace Jack Clarke.

'Williams looks like he'd eat his opponent's nose!' – Neville impressed by Man Utd left-back

The legendary Red Devils defender has hailed the impressive progress made by the academy graduate who has emerged in the first team in 2019-20

Brandon Willams’ performances for Manchester United have earned him the backing of Gary Neville, with the Red Devils legend liking the fact that the teenage full-back “has that look in his eye of someone that would eat his opponent’s nose to win the match”.

A big break at Old Trafford has been offered to a promising 19-year-old this season.

With Luke Shaw facing further questions of his value and future, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned to a home-grown talent for assistance at left-back .

Williams has made a seamless transition into the senior fold, with his consistency catching the eye since becoming a regular in United’s plans.

He impressed again during a 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay win over Wolves on Wednesday.

The youngster appears to have nailed down a place in Solskjaer’s side, with there little reason to drop him back down the pecking order unless an unfortunate injury is picked up.

United icon Neville is among those who feel that Williams should now be one of the first names on the team sheet.

The former right-back has hailed the ability and personality of the academy graduate, with Williams following in some illustrious footsteps.

“I like Brandon Williams,” Neville posted on Twitter.

“What I like about him specifically is he has that look in his eye of someone that would eat his opponents nose to win the match. Keep going kid!

“Oh he can play football too which is always a bonus.”

Williams was handed his competitive debut by United back in September, when Solskjaer’s side took in a Carabao Cup clash with Rochdale.

He then figured in a Europa League meeting with AZ Alkmaar before making his Premier League bow against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are now preparing for a rekindling of rivalries with old adversaries from Anfield on Sunday.

Williams can expect to figure prominently in that contest.

If he does, then he will take his tally of appearances in the 2019-20 campaign to 18.

There is the promise of many more outings to come for a player who has also committed his long-term future to United this season by penning a new contract in October .

Ozil planning to see out Arsenal contract as he vows to remain with Gunners until 2021

The World Cup-winning playmaker has been heavily linked with a move away from north London, but he intends to stick around for another 18 months

Mesut Ozil is planning to see out his contract at Arsenal, with the German revealing that it is his intention to remain with the Gunners “this season and next”.

In the summer of 2021, the World Cup winner will see his current deal at Emirates Stadium expire.

A lucrative agreement signed in January 2018 has generated much debate in north London.

Many have suggested that the funds invested in Ozil could have been better used elsewhere, especially as the 31-year-old has struggled for form since putting pen to paper.

There have, however, been encouraging signs since Mikel Arteta inherited the managerial reins from Unai Emery.

The new Arsenal boss has reignited a spark in Ozil, with a match-winning talent becoming an important figure once more.

That is likely to remain the case for the next 18 months, with regular rounds of transfer talk set to be ignored.

Ozil told beIN Sports when quizzed on his future: “I’m very pleased with my contract and I will continue here this season and next.

“I can’t tell you what the future will bring, I’m excited about the future, but I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

For now, Ozil is focused on doing all he can to salvage something for Arsenal from the 2019-20 campaign.

A top-four finish may be beyond the Gunners, but they remain in the hunt for Europa League and FA Cup prizes.

Arteta is the man charged with the task of getting a fallen giant back on its feet, with the Spaniard aware that a serious rebuilding project lies in front of him.

He is considered to have made a positive start to his reign, despite ongoing struggles for consistency, and Ozil believes the 37-year-old will prove to be a shrewd appointment.

“It is basically getting us back to the old Arsenal virtues,” Ozil added on his former team-mate.

“Fighting and having possession, being in control of the game, having the ball all the time.

“These are the things that he is working on with us and you can see it — everyone is smiling, laughing, enjoying their time. It has made us successful.

“I think he is the right man at this club.”

A look at the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title race

As the weekend nears so does the next set of WSL fixtures. Last weekend saw 19 goals scored including some goal of the season contenders.

Arsenal lead the teams with 33 points and their Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema is top goal scorer in the league with 14 goals despite not scoring a goal yet in 2020. Against Brighton it was her teammates Danielle Van De Donk, Jill Roord, Jordan Nobbs and club favourite Beth Mead all contributing to the goals which highlights how much of a threat this Arsenal side is. Sunday will see the league leaders face Chelsea.

Manchester City are hot on the heels of Arsenal as they beat Everton 3-1 last weekend. Pauline Bremer scored two of them to add to her goal tally. The German has now scored 9 goals in the WSL which is joint 2nd with Chelsea’s Beth England.

Chelsea looked dangerous as they put 6 past Bristol City. New signing Sam Kerr came off the bench to join Beth England up-front which saw their formation adapt to an effective 4-4-2. It was Emma Hayes 200th game in charge and what a way to mark it. Staying with Chelsea, Fran Kirby is still suffering from an illness while former Chelsea and England forward Eniola Aluko announced her retirement from football.

Elsewhere Fara Williams signed a new contract keeping her at Reading until 2021. They will travel to Everton looking for their 6th win of the season.

Spurs who were only promoted last season are up to 5th in the league. They will play a crunch match against Manchester United on Sunday. Liverpool remain bottom of the league still looking for that first win of the season. Their match against Manchester United was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. They have a massive game against Bristol City on Sunday and badly need a win.

Canadian Home Prices Set To Soar As Supply Hits Tightest Levels In 16 Years

Canadian home sales ended last year with a 22.7 per cent jump in December compared with a year ago as prices rose as part of a trend that should continue into this year, said the Canadian Real Estate Association.

Sales in the final month of 2019 were up across most of Canada compared with a year ago, when sales growth had slowed, the association said Wednesday.

On a month-over-month basis, home sales in December were down 0.9 per cent to end a streak of monthly gains that began last March.

Watch: 3 trends you can expect from Canada’s housing market in 2020. Story continues below.

Sales rose from a year ago as listings declined, putting upward pressure on prices. The national average price for a home sold in December 2019 was about $517,000, up 9.6 per cent compared with a year earlier.

Excluding the Greater Vancouver and Greater Toronto Area, two of the country’s most expensive and active housing markets, the average price of a home sold was about $400,000, up 6.7 per cent compared with December 2018.

The average price was up 11.3 per cent in Ontario, and 8.5 per cent in British Columbia, while it dipped 0.4 per cent in Alberta and 3.7 per cent in Saskatchewan.

“Home price growth is picking up in housing markets where listings are in short supply,” said Jason Stephen, president of CREA.

New home listings slid 1.8 per cent in December from a month earlier, leaving new supply close to its lowest level in a decade, said the association.

The trend pushed the national sales-to-new listings ratio to 66.9 per cent for the highest level since the spring of 2004, and well above the long-term average of 53.7 per cent.

The overall increase in activity from a year ago has been a boost to the economy, said BMO chief economist Douglas Porter.

“After a couple challenging years, the Canadian housing market has brushed itself off and gotten back on its feet ― transitioning from a drag on growth to a source of strength.”

He said the further price gains expected this year will also put further upward pressure on household debt and restrain action on Bank of Canada interest rates.

“The broad-based rebound in home sales, prices, and borrowing is a key reason the Bank of Canada has remained planted on the sidelines, and why we expect them to stay there in 2020.”

Not enough inventory

TD economist Rishi Sondhi noted that the weaker end to the year in activity, after month-over-month declines in December, was largely a result of the falling supply trend that should continue into this year.

“While the jobs market lost some steam, and interest rates are up from their September lows, a key contributor to the moderation in activity, in our view, is lacklustre growth in available inventories.”

He said sales should rise this year despite some constraints in supply.

“For 2020, we expect sales to rise, fuelled by a likely Bank of Canada rate cut, further job gains, robust population growth, and supportive federal policies. Prices should also record strong growth given tight conditions.”

From little bird to Real's enforcer – How Atletico's nemesis Valverde made the Madrid midfield his own

The Uruguayan is in the spotlight for his cynical foul in the Supercopa but he has been making waves for the right reasons for some time now

Football can be a funny old game on occasion. Just ask Federico Valverde.

The Uruguay international had been steadily making himself a vital part of the Real Madrid machine, competing for a regular place in one of the most talented, competitive midfields in the world. At the weekend, though, Valverde finally hit the headlines – just not for the reason he would have wished.

Valverde cut down Alvaro Morata with a desperate, scything tackle while the Atletico Madrid forward was bearing down on goal. He was promptly punished with a red card but his cynical foul stopped Morata from scoring what surely would have been the winner at the end of the Supercopa de Espana final in Jeddah.

It was reminiscent of Uruguay team-mate Luis Suarez handling on the line to deny Ghana a goal in the World Cup quarter-finals in 2010, and yielded similar results. Madrid survived the final six minutes of extra time to take the final to a penalty shoot-out, which they won 4-1, to claim the first trophy of Zinedine Zidane’s second spell in charge.

And while Valverde’s contribution made him an anti-hero, he won the seal of approval from another man who was never any stranger to football’s dark arts during his playing days.

“It was the most important passage of play. I told him that anyone would have done the same in his place,” beaten Atletico boss Diego Simeone told reporters after the game.

“I think the MVP award [for Valverde] makes a lot of sense because he won the game with that action.”

The 21-year-old was just another young hopeful dreaming of stardom when Suarez threw himself across the net in South Africa almost 10 years ago. Like so many Uruguayans, he grew up immersed in football and took to the game almost before he could walk.

In his book Nuestra Generacion Dorada, Diego Munoz tells how Valverde began playing for ‘baby futbol’ side Estudiantes de la Union at just three years old: “He was so small that he wore nappies under his shorts.”

Wiry and softly spoken, the Montevideo native began his football apprenticeship at Penarol at the age of 12, having caught the attention of Nestor Goncalves, son of the eponymous Manya legend and lead talent-spotter for the Uruguayan giants.

Valverde’s fragile physique and willowy legs earned him the nickname pajarito (little bid) but Goncalves immediately saw past those disadvantages to glimpse his real potential.

“My first impression was the intelligence Fede had to get out of trouble, even though he was physically much smaller than the rest… that made him have to figure things out with his brain,” Goncalves revealed to Marca in October

“If you don’t have that talent at that age, it is very hard to gain it later on. Fede’s playing style is very quick and intelligent. The potential he has is enormous.

“One characteristic of talent is adaptability and Federico grew as he became more experienced. When he left here, I told him that he wouldn’t see me again, but we would meet in the national team.

“And so it was.”

On Goncalves’ advice, Uruguay Under-15 coach Alejandro Garay called him up at the end of 2012, and Valverde went on to represent the Celeste at every age group until Oscar Tabarez gave the youngster his senior bow in 2017, less than a month after his 19th birthday.

The midfielder was by then already a Madrid player, having moved six days after turning 18, and impressing on a loan spell with Deportivo.

A renowned scholar of the game and head not just of the senior squad but the entire Uruguay set-up, Tabarez had also been following Valverde’s progress for years.

“I have known Valverde since he came to the [Celeste youth academy] Complex when he was 13,” the veteran coach told reporters following his national team debut, a 2-1 win over Paraguay in Asuncion. “I have followed all his progress. He was a very different footballer to what he is now.

“He was tiny, skinny. And he was different in terms of his personality: he was extremely shy. But the youth trainers at his club and in the national team could see that he had things normal players do not have, above all a vision of the game which was surprising at such a young age.

“I was not 100 per cent sure he would turn out as good as he has, because I knew I was putting a lot of pressure on him… but I think he has taken a big step and I have the satisfaction of his contribution to our win and that he answered me. He made sure I was not wrong.”

Now, still at the very start of his career, Valverde seems to have the world at his feet.

His emergence at Madrid has allowed Zidane to ease the pressure on the ageing Luka Modric, while he has also deputised for Toni Kroos on the other side of the Merengue midfield and, with three goals and two assists so far in 2019-20, shown that he can be a threat in the opposition area.

Such is the Uruguayan’s impact that two perennial transfer targets, Christian Eriksen and Paul Pogba, have slipped down Madrid’s list of priorities.

He may be in the news now for the hatchet job on Morata, but Valverde is developing at an incredible rate at the Bernabeu and it is his exquisite passing and inspired vision that will keep him on the front pages for years to come.
