Popular apps breaking EU data laws

Twitter-owned advertising-tech company MoPub and dating app Grindr have been sharing the personal data of their users to thousands of advertising partners in breach of European Union regulations, according to a new study by a consumer rights group.

The Norwegian Consumer Council, or NCC, report found that the online advertising industry was “systematically breaking the law”, transmitting personal data and tracking users in ways that are banned under the General Data Protection Regulation, the EU’s data law.

The report, titled Out of Control, investigates the collection and use of personal data by 10 popular apps, and claims its findings raise serious concerns about the failure of data controllers to protect consumers’ data and privacy.

The study scrutinizes the advertising technology industry for the role of apps in disseminating huge amounts of consumers’ personal data, “without their meaningful consent in the name of personalizing advertising”. The report’s authors say the problem is not limited to a few dating apps, but that it is “endemic” across the sector.

Finn Myrstad, the NCC’s digital policy director, told the New York Times, which first reported the study: “Any consumer with an average number of apps on their phone-anywhere between 40 and 80 apps-will have their data shared with hundreds or perhaps thousands of actors online.”

The NCC said its report shows that every time people use apps, hundreds of “shadowy” entities receive personal information that can be used for targeted advertising, but may also lead to “discrimination, manipulation and exploitation”.

The extent of tracking makes it impossible to make informed choices about how personal data is collected, shared and used, according to Myrstad.

“The massive commercial surveillance going on throughout the ad-tech industry is systematically at odds with our fundamental rights and freedoms,” said Myrstad.

The council said it is filing formal complaints for breaches of the GDPR against Grindr, owned by Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech, and companies receiving personal data through the app, including Twitter’s MoPub, AT&T’s AppNexus, OpenX, AdColony and Smaato.

The BBC reports that, in response, Grindr said it was changing its consent platform while Twitter has temporarily disabled the relevant account.

“Every time you open an app like Grindr, advertisement networks get your GPS location, device identifiers and even the fact that you use a gay dating app,” Austrian activist Max Schrems said in a statement by the council. “This is an insane violation of users’ EU privacy rights.”

The dating app Tinder is accused in the study of sharing user data with at least 45 companies owned by the Match Group, which operates a dating website of the same name. The NCC report also criticized other applications, including Qibla Finder, which orients Muslims toward Mecca for prayer; Clue and MyDays used for monitoring fertility periods; and the children’s app My Talking Tom 2.

Some 20 months since the EU’s GDPR data laws took effect in May 2018, “consumers are still pervasively tracked and profiled online”, the report said.

‘Fierce competition’ boosts biathletes

China’s young biathletes are confident the steep learning curve they encountered at the Winter Youth Olympic Games will benefit them in future competitions.

Ding Yuhuan, China’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony, was the best-placed Chinese in Tuesday’s action, the penultimate day of biathlon events, with a 34th-place finish in the women’s 6-kilometer sprint.

“I’ve discovered what I lack compared with my opponents. I should learn from them in the coming days,” said the 16-year-old.

“Competing against around 100 rivals, it felt quite fierce. I’ve gained experience from it, which will be a big help for me when I compete in national events.”

For Ding’s male counterparts, Tuesday’s 7.5km sprint proved a real struggle. Shi Yuanyuan was the highest-ranked Chinese in 57th place, with teammates Gou Zhendong and Liu Zhaoyu 59th and 60th respectively.

Shi shot clean in the prone, but incurred four penalty loops in the standing section.

“After shooting perfect in the prone, I became a little impatient. The result was below my expectations,” Shi said. “I kind of feel bad about it because I didn’t perform to my personal-best level at the Games.”

Gou misfired all his shots in the standing position, including three which hit the target next to his.

“I was just too nervous then,” said Gou, who competed in three events in four days.

“I need to improve my shooting performance,” he added. “I didn’t find a major difference between myself and other competitors in skiing, but that wasn’t the case in shooting. We have much to do on the fundamentals.”

The 17-year-old Gou has set his sights on representing his country on home snow at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

“I need to improve in all aspects in future training and competitions to bridge the gap. I hope to move up another level and make contributions for the team in 2022,” he said.

Liu also regards the Youth Games as a stepping stone to improved performances in future.

“It’s my first time competing in such a major tournament. I’ve gained experience from it,” Liu said.

Jiang Yang, an official in charge of the team, admitted that the Chinese athletes have a long way to go to catch up with biathlon’s elite nations but said there were plenty of positives to take from the Games.

“We are far behind those high-level teams on shooting accuracy,” Jiang said. “But these young athletes have gained experience from international competitions, which has laid a solid foundation for their future.

“They learned technical moves from high-level opponents, and they have also made friends here, which is beneficial to their growth.”

Stage all set for popular festival play

As most people wind down for the Spring Festival holiday, performers at one Beijing theater are setting the stage to entertain over the festive period.

During a recent Saturday afternoon, actors and actresses from Beijing People’s Art Theater gathered at a rehearsal room to prepare for the Chinese play, titled Family Reunion, which opened on Tuesday and will run for 14 shows through Jan 30.

Adapted from Chinese writer Ye Guangqin’s novel of the same title, the play tells a family’s story spanning five decades. Living in a traditional courtyard in a hutong (narrow alley) in downtown Beijing, the Wang family has traditionally worked on the maintenance and repair of historic buildings. However, with society changing over time, the Wang family goes through ups and downs. The family’s loyalty to the same career of its members is also challenged with the younger generation spurning tradition.

The play is part of the ongoing 20th Meet in Beijing International Arts Festival, which brings over 700 artists from 12 countries and regions to the capital through Feb 4.

Since the play premiered in 2005, it has become one of the most popular plays of Beijing People’s Art Theater’s repertories. Founded in 1952 with Chinese playwright Cao Yu as its first president, the theater is known for its productions, including Teahouse, Thunderstorm and Sunrise.

Directed by Ren Ming, Family Reunion features veteran theater actors, including Feng Yuanzheng, Liang Danni and Wang Changli.

“Last year, we staged 14 shows of the play during the Spring Festival. The performances were warmly received by the audience. The show is about family and that’s why people love it during the holiday, when families get together,” says actor Feng, who plays the leading role of Wang Mantang, who devotes his whole life into repairing and preserving ancient buildings.

Erdogan says Turkey deploying troops to Libya

Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan is beginning to send troops into Libya in support of the UN recognized government in Tripoli.

Speaking in Ankara on Thursday, Erdogan said that Turkey will continue to use all diplomatic and military means to ensure stability to its south, including in Libya, Reuters news agency reported.

Erdogan will meet leaders of Germany, Russia, Britain and Italy on Sunday to discuss the Libyan conflict.

Turkey is also expected to start granting licenses for exploration and drilling in the eastern Mediterranean in 2020, in accord with a maritime agreement with Libya, according to Reuters.

Erdogan said Turkey’s Oruc Reis ship would begin seismic activities in the region.

China, Italy welcome cultural and tourism feast in 2020

As part of the major events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Italy diplomatic ties, the 2020 China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism will open with a concert at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome on Jan 21, said Chinese and Italian officials in Beijing on Wednesday.

The year-long event will feature nearly 100 cultural and tourism activities in both countries, ranging from performing arts and visual arts to cultural heritage, tourism and creative design.

The grand opening will consist of a star-studded concert bringing together famous Chinese and Italian artists, a China-Italy tourism forum that will convene industry leaders from both China and Italy, and a photo exhibition showcasing world heritages from both countries.

“China and Italy are two representative ancient civilizations in the East and West. We both have 55 UNESCO world heritage sites, tied for first place in the world,” Zheng Hao, deputy head of the Bureau of International Exchange and Cooperation of China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, said at the press conference on Wednesday.

“Looking back on the past years, all the important cultural cooperation achievements were groundbreaking, such as the long-term exhibitions set up in each other’s national museums, the establishment of the China-Italy Cultural Cooperation Mechanism, and the pairing of World Heritage sites from the two sides,” he noted.

The two nations are promoting the twinning of UNESCO world heritage sites to promote cultural tourism. The West Lake Cultural Landscape in East China’s Hangzhou, for example, has established a friendship relation with Italy’s City of Verona. The two heritage sites are exploring exchanges and cooperation through co-producing films and exhibition curations.

Chinese artworks will not only be displayed at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in the upcoming months, but also in famous Italian museums such as the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, according to Zheng.

In the cultural heritage sector, big Chinese museums such as the Palace Museum and the National Museum are working on swap exhibitions with their Italian counterparts.

Talking about Italian art that will be shown in China, Italian ambassador Luca Ferrari told China Daily, “We have some very important Italian museums like Uffizi. It will bring large exhibitions to China.”

Italy has become a popular tourism destination among Chinese tourists in recent years. Statistics show Italy received over 3 million Chinese visitors last year and that number is expected to rise to 4 million in 2020. The ambassador noted Italy appeals to Chinese people in three main areas: art and culture, local people’s hospitality and its culinary delights.

“But nowadays, there is also an enormous number of Italian tourists who come to China for its countryside, for its beautiful landscape and cultural heritage,” he said.

During the press conference, the event’s logo was also unveiled.

Rashford, Martial & Greenwood backed by Solskjaer to be Man Utd’s new Ronaldo, Tevez & Rooney

The Red Devils boss believes the attacking options currently at his disposal have the potential to follow in some illustrious footsteps

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood can build a striking trident at Manchester United to rival that once formed by Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils have boasted plenty of fearsome attacking units down the years.

In his playing days, Solskjaer figured alongside the likes of Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo and Rooney.

He is now calling the shots at Old Trafford and believes those currently at his disposal have the potential to follow in the footsteps of iconic predecessors.

The United boss said when asked about his frontmen: “We can see them three, got them on long contracts, and can see them three developing into a very exciting front three.

“I was here with Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney – that’s what we want as supporters and manager, express yourselves, put the fear to their defenders. We’ve got Daniel James here as well so I am very excited for it.”

Rashford has netted 19 times this season, Martial 11 and Greenwood nine.

Their collective return is greater than that enjoyed by Liverpool’s fearsome frontline of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Solskjaer believes that bodes well heading into a meeting with the Reds at Anfield on Sunday.

He said: “I believe in ours, going to add to them, definitely, but in the years coming we’ll see lots of them.

“Liverpool have scored more goals than us outside the front three so I’m not going to say ours are better or theirs are better. Sunday will be a game by itself.”

Solskjaer added: “The front three they’ve [Liverpool] got have been playing together for ages, seasons now, and you can see the rotation movements, understanding and we hope our front three will get that understanding.

“I think I’ve only started them together once in the Premier League [in a 4-1 win over Newcastle], so we’ve got a way to go to get the understanding but they scored four goals in that game.”

United will make the short journey to Merseyside this weekend sat fifth in the English top-flight table, five points adrift of Chelsea and the final Champions League spot.

Solskjaer issues update on Rashford's availability for Man Utd's game at Liverpool

Anfield is the stage for Sunday’s headline match and the visitors are unsure if their star striker will be available

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he will give Marcus Rashford as much time as he possibly can before deciding whether the striker is fit enough to face fierce rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Red Devils travel to Anfield to face the runaway leaders, who sit 14 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, with a mandate to end the Reds’ incredible 38-match unbeaten streak in the English top tier.

Getting one over on their old foes is easier said than done, however, with Sunday’s hosts in blistering form and doubts still lingering over whether Rashford, United’s most in-form player, will be fit enough to feature against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 22-year-old came off the bench in Wednesday’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Wolves but was withdrawn after just 16 minutes after taking to the pitch, having picked up a back injury, and Solskjaer admits that he still does not know if his star forward will be available.

“I can’t tell you now,” the Norwegian told a press conference on Friday morning. “As I said with Harry [Maguire] a few weeks ago, of course we’re going to give him the absolute amount of time to find out.

“We’re going to do some more checks and treatment with him today. Yesterday of course was just a recovery day anyway and some treatment for him.

“I haven’t seen him this morning, but I’m not going to hold my breath. I would probably think that he wouldn’t be ready, but let’s see. There’s still 48 hours, more than that, so let’s see.”

Rashford’s injury comes as a huge blow for United, with the England striker having found the net against Liverpool in the reverse fixture, a 1-1 draw in October and the only match in which the Merseyside outfit have dropped points thus far this season.

Marcos Rojo, Scott McTominay and Axel Tuanzebe are also set to miss the clash, while Paul Pogba is out of contention having had ankle surgery at the start of January. Luke Shaw is also a doubt, while Eric Bailly played in a behind-closed-doors match on Tuesday as he nears full fitness.

'I could've won the league if Liverpool were bankrolled by a country!' – Carragher takes a swipe at Man City spending

The former centre-back didn’t take kindly to suggestions that the Reds have been operating in a similar way to their rivals in the transfer market

Jamie Carragher has taken aim at Manchester City’s spending, stating that he would have won a Premier League medal if Liverpool had been “bankrolled by a country” in an apparent reference to the champions’ affiliation with Abu Dhabi’s royal family.

Famously a one-club man, Carragher spent his entire 17-year senior career with his hometown side, lifting two FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League, while also being named Liverpool’s player of the year on two occasions.

A Premier League title evaded him, however, a fate shared by fellow Reds legend Steven Gerrard, and the very likely prospect of his old club finishing as top dogs this season has the former defender understandably full of praise for Jurgen Klopp and his charges.

Indeed, Carragher recently stated that Liverpool are “not buying superstars, they’re making them”, arguing that Klopp and Co. have refrained from spending big on ready-made stars from elite clubs and suggesting that City have done the opposite.

When put to the 41-year-old on social media that City have not in fact been recruiting from the world’s best clubs, the 41-year-old used Raheem Sterling as an example, stating that Pep Guardiola’s outfit bought the England international “from a club who’ve won the Champions League six times”.

A barbed response was issued, asserting that Sterling merely left Liverpool because he wanted to win a Premier League medal – and already has two more to his name than Carragher.

“Well I’d like to think I may have been lucky enough to get one if Liverpool were ever bankrolled by a country,” the former Reds defender replied on Twitter. “And if not I know I wouldn’t have left chasing their money as well as titles.

“Imagine how much more you could spend if you filled that ground off the council!”

Liverpool’s runaway lead at the top of the English top-flight table currently stands at 14 points over second-placed City, with the table-toppers also having a game in hand due to their Club World Cup exertions.

The Reds next face fierce rivals Manchester United at Anfield, with the Red Devils eager to break the hosts’ 38-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Ignore Arsenal's results: Arteta is already making his mark at the Emirates

The Spaniard has only won two of his first five games in charge but the influence of Pep Guardiola’s teachings can be seen in the Gunners’ play

A pretty dull 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace , defined largely by hesitancy in the Arsenal midfield and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s red card , might seem like a strange game to choose to praise new manager Mikel Arteta for the impact he has had on the club since arriving in December.

However, the scale of the mess he inherited at the Emirates should not be understated, and nor should the Gunners’ progress over the last three months be measured by results.

Despite a record of just two wins from five outings in all competitions, there are numerous signs that Arteta is quietly starting a revolution in north London, imparting tactical and psychological wisdom that will bear fruit come the start of the 2020-21 season.

If there was any doubt Arteta would model his managerial style on Pep Guardiola, that has certainly been put to bed now.

Broadly speaking, his vision for Arsenal is high-pressing, high-tempo possession football that aims to pin the opposition back and move the ball in complex designated patterns.

The squad’s fitness issues, and brittle confidence following years of stagnation under Unai Emery and Arsene Wenger, mean Arteta’s tactical philosophy has only emerged briefly; at most in 30-minute spells that provide us with a tantalising glimpse of what is to come in the long term.

Arsenal fans have every right to get excited, though, irrespective of the points dropped against Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Palace. It was against Manchester United that the vision first revealed itself .

Arteta utilised something close to a 2-3-5 when Arsenal had the ball, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles spending much of the first half as an inverted full-back, patrolling midfield alongside Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira. This gave them a solid screen behind a front five that was framed by Sead Kolasinac bombing forward on the left and Nicolas Pepe holding the width on the right.

The other three attackers were the most important pieces in the jigsaw: Alexandre Lacazette dropped off the front, Mesut Ozil roamed alongside the Frenchman, and Aubameyang cut infield to replace Lacazette.

United simply couldn’t cope with the movement of these three, who, along with Kolasinac and Pepe, synchronised movements in classic Guardiola style. The Catalan has always emphasised the importance of ensuring no two players occupy the same zone of the pitch, either horizontally or vertically, thus creating tessellating triangles throughout the final third.

What this allows is quick vertical passing; rondos on the pitch, drifting from one flank to the other. It might have only happened for about 35 minutes against United, but it was enough for us to see where Arteta is taking this team and, more importantly, underlined their willingness to listen and learn.

Another telling example of Arteta’s in-depth tactical coaching came last weekend at Palace, when Aubameyang finished off an 18-pass move to give the visitors the lead. Most of those passes were patient sideways balls between the defenders who, waiting for a gap to emerge, carefully stretched Palace from side to side.

But the final few touches suggested Arteta is now coaching specific attacking moves in training, in the hope that certain high-tempo interactions become etched into muscle memory. This feature, often referred to as automatisms, is what makes Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool or Guardiola’s Man City look like such great improvisers when in fact they are merely repeating rehearsed moves, like actors making dialogue feel spontaneous.

As David Luiz played an assertive forward pass to Ozil, he instinctively knew where Lacazette would be as he dropped off the front. The Frenchman then stabbed a pass forward for Aubameyang with the speed of someone who already knew where to look, and Aubameyang had indeed begun making his diagonal run as soon as Ozil first took the ball. The Arsenal players automatically knew where each other would be.

There was a telling moment later in the half when Kolasinac, all alone, dribbled into the middle of the pitch among a crowd of opposition bodies, but rather than turning back to find help, he angled a through ball down the left wing: a no-look pass to nobody. Instead of being berated by his team-mates – easy to envisage under Emery – Aubameyang apologised for not being there.

It would appear that Arteta is teaching the players specific rhythms of movement, doing away with the sort of genuine creative freedom that is vulnerable to the changing self-belief of individuals. When you begin to rely on rehearsed moves, it matters less when low confidence causes hesitancy and mental blocks.

Of course, teaching automatisms is secondary to getting the wider shape right. Arsenal – again, in fits and starts – are moving in the right direction here, too, with compression between the lines a top priority for the new boss.

High-pressing and a high defensive line requires compactness; otherwise the opponent can simply counter-attack into huge open space, re-stretching the pitch until you have an elongated formation incapable of pressing as a unit. Compression is just as important in a high block as in a low block.

Arsenal are getting there, and the chief beneficiaries so far have been Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira. Suddenly, both players have a much smaller area of the pitch to cover, with close support from both sides meaning just a narrow column of the pitch in which to makes tackles and interceptions.

Where previously they had to scramble across the width and depth of the pitch, now they benefit from the presence of others and the confidence of knowing they can rely on their team-mates.

Both Xhaka and Torreira are flying into tackles now, briefly sprinting out of their zone safe in the knowledge they will be covered. Simplifying individual roles is always a good thing, but particularly for central midfielders who, depending on the system, can be asked to cover wildly different areas of the field.

These tactical improvements wouldn’t be possible – and certainly won’t hold for long – unless Arteta is also a good motivator and, fortunately for Arsenal fans, this is another area in which the Spaniard is similar to Guardiola.

Such potentially risky tactics – from high starting positions to trusting the collective to press together – requires unerring self-belief and unquestioning loyalty.

Here, too, we have had a brief window into the future under Arteta. At half-time against Leeds United, the Arsenal manager “shouted a lot”, in the words of Lacazette, inspiring a much more assertive display in the second half.

Having the charisma to command respect in the dressing room is vital at any level, but perhaps particularly so for a young manager stepping into a club moulded by Wenger and allowed to drift further by Emery.

For that reason alone, there will be plenty of tough times ahead. Arsenal will continue to switch off, to slide back into bad habits, over the coming months. Ozil will go missing for long periods. Defenders will continue to make sloppy errors.

Revitalising Arsenal will be a long and painful process, requiring patience from the fan base and money from the board.

But early signs suggest that, in Arteta, Arsenal have found the right man to lead them forward, to bring modern attacking football to the Emirates, and to restore the club to the top of the game.

Bombardier Shares Plunge 30% As Analysts Question Its Future

The future of Bombardier Inc. is being called into question after the company said it was actively considering alternatives to reduce its staggering debt.

After exiting the commercial aircraft business, selling its aerostructures unit and unloading a large tract of land in Toronto, the company said it is working to reduce debt and “solve its capital structure.” Bombardier’s long-term debt stood at more than US$9 billion as of Dec. 31, 2018.

“We are actively pursuing alternatives that would allow us to accelerate our debt paydown. The objective is to position the business for long-term success with greater operating and financial flexibility,” it said in a news release Thursday that warned about weaker financial results for 2019.

What that means is unclear, says Walter Spracklin of RBC Capital Markets.

“The company’s rather opaque language about accelerating its strategic review to ‘solve’ its capital structure will require further clarity,” he wrote in a report.

The language suggests some urgency and not just pushing out debt maturities, added Seth Seifman of JP Morgan.

“This suggests to us the potential to pursue strategic options, including a breakup and sale of all or part of the company,” he wrote. “It may include one or both of Bombardier’s two major businesses: bizjets and trains.”

Bombardier’s shares plunged more than 30 per cent to their lowest level in nearly four years following its release which pointed to a possible withdrawal from a partnership with Airbus in the commercial aircraft previously called the C Series.

The company said its financial miss is mainly due to actions taken to resolve challenging rail projects, the timing of milestone payments and new orders and the delivery of four business jets slipping into the first quarter of 2020.

The stock was down 54 cents at $1.25 in afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Watch: 300 Bombardier train cars removed from New York City subway. Story continues below.

The Montreal-based company said it is reassessing its ongoing participation in the Airbus partnership about two years after giving up a controlling stake in the program to Europe-based Airbus SE.

Airbus owns 50.06 per cent of the joint venture, Bombardier 33.58 per cent and Quebec 16.36 per cent after injecting US$1 billion in 2016.

While the A220 program is gaining orders as it proves its value, additional cash will be required to support the ramp-up of production, a delay in reaching break-even and lower returns over the life of the program, it said in a preliminary announcement of its fourth-quarter and 2019 results set to be released Feb. 13.

“This may significantly impact the joint venture value,” Bombardier said, adding it will disclose any writedown next month.

Bombardier said it expects consolidated revenue for 2019 to total about US$15.8 billion and consolidated adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of about US$830 million.

In October, the company, which reports in U.S. dollars, had said it expected revenue between $16.5 billion and $17 billion for the year and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion.

The company said it expects to earn zero adjusted EBITDA in the fourth quarter on about $4.2 billion in revenues with losses in transportation offset by earnings in aviation.

Consolidated free cash flow is expected to be around $1 billion in the fourth quarter, about $650 million lower than anticipated. However, the shortfall is expected to be recovered in 2020.

A total of 58 aircraft were delivered in the fourth quarter and 175 for the full year, including 11 Global 7500s.

Industry analysts called the financial warning negative with some cutting their price target for Bombardier’s shares.

“The key question is how much closer is the company to solving these issues, and what comfort can we get that new issues of similar scope and magnitude will not recur,” added Spracklin.

The operational issues of transportation and update on the A220 are disappointing, said Benoit Poirier of Desjardins Securities.

“Nevertheless, we note that the value of the A220 program is not currently reflected in Bombardier’s stock and therefore management’s decision to review its strategic options for the program should unlock value through deleveraging ― even at a depressed valuation,″ he wrote.
