Documentary movie gathers A-list stars to ‘battle’ poverty

Starlight, a documentary movie recording Chinese filmmakers’ efforts to alleviate poverty, will debut on the China Movie Channel, or CCTV-6, on Jan 18.

Under the helm of Zhao Wei, a renowned actress and director, the movie emerged from a charity program launched by the channel in June 2018, which has drawn 33 A-list stars to visit some of the most poverty-stricken areas in China, using their influence to promote local tourist attractions or agricultural products.

The top celebrities include kung fu giant Jackie Chan, actor Huang Xiaoming (The Bravest), actress Li Bingbing (The Meg), actor Chen Kun (Mojin: The Lost Legend), actress Zhou Xun (Our Time will Come) and actor Liu Haoran (Detective Chinatown franchise).

One of the more interesting segments involves Huang, who traveled to Jiangcheng Hani and Yi autonomous county in Yunnan province, and discovered that the top “enemies” that have harassed locals and caused poverty are a bunch of wild Asian elephants.

More than 70 such giant “uninvited guests” have been discovered in the county. They have stamped on farmlands and eaten or destroyed a lot of plants, causing a financial loss around 40 million yuan to more than 4,800 families.

Huang said in a trailer that the tour has propelled him to think more about the relationship between humankind and nature.

A sneak preview was held in the Beijing office of the China Movie Channel on Jan 8, gathering director Zhao as well as dozens of experts and insiders to exchange views on the upcoming movie.

San Francisco students celebrate ‘graduation’ from culture camp

SAN FRANCISCO-More than 300 students from overseas Chinese families celebrated this month the completion of their training at a Chinese culture winter camp with new skills and knowledge about China.

The mostly English-speaking students from the San Francisco-based Central Chinese High School in America took to the stage to showcase their newly-acquired skills in traditional Chinese culture, such as paper-cutting, clay modeling, knot-making, ethnic group dancing, and recitation of ancient poems in Mandarin.

The two-week camp provided them with convenient access to education about Chinese culture under the direct instruction of 12 Chinese teachers selected from 10 schools in East China’s Jiangsu province.

Ju Hua, chief of the Chinese teachers’ delegation, says: “In about 11 days, the Chinese teachers taught more than 300 kids from overseas Chinese families to learn how to make traditional handicrafts unique to China, including paper-cutting, the playing of traditional Chinese musical instruments and Chinese kung fu.”

Ju says that the training at the 2019 Winter Camp of Chinese Culture Wonderland, co-organized by China’s Jiangsu province and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in San Francisco, provided the students with a good opportunity to experience in person the profoundness and charm of traditional Chinese culture, which will help them eventually become “ambassadors” of friendly exchanges between China and the United States.

Cai Bingle, headmaster of the Central Chinese High School in America, says the winter camp was a valuable platform for the students of Chinese descent, who were mostly born in the US, to learn traditional Chinese culture “at a very close distance” by engaging directly with teachers from China.

“The two-week-long camp, though short in length, was a fruitful training session for the kids, who previously had little knowledge about Chinese culture, but acquired new information about the country where their parents came from,” Cai says. “I believe they will have a better idea about Chinese culture after their training at the camp and develop new identities and connections with China.”

Grace Ou, a student from the school, says that she had little knowledge about Chinese culture before, but the winter camp gave her a deeper insight into Chinese culture that goes back thousands of years. She says she also feels honored to be of Chinese heritage.

“We learned the culture of our Chinese heritage, and with that we will become ambassadors to help carry on both Chinese culture and the friendship between China and the United States,” she says.

Abu Dhabi’s energy chief confirms cooperation on BRI plan

Abu Dhabi’s energy chief, Awaidha Murshed Ali Al Marar, says the United Arab Emirates is looking to support energy development in the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, as well as secure further Chinese investment in the UAE’s electricity grid.

In an exclusive interview with China Daily at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, or ADSW, Abu Dhabi Department of Energy Chairman Al Marar provided an update on a memorandum of understanding signed between the UAE and China last year.

"Since we signed the MoU with the State Grid Corporation of China, we have held several follow up meetings and exchanged delegations with key Chinese entities," said Al Marar, who heads up energy policy for Abu Dhabi, the second-most populous of the UAE’s seven emirates behind Dubai. "Importantly, we were able to identify areas of cooperation in renewable energy policymaking and explored investment opportunities including in the energy transmission and distribution business as well as grid expansion within the UAE."

The UAE is looking to solar and nuclear power to lead its transition from fossil fuel energy generation. Last year, China’s Silk Road Fund and a number of Chinese banks lead financing for a 950-megawatt solar farm near Dubai, which promises to be among the world’s largest such facilities. In 2017, China’s Shanghai Electric was selected as the main contractor for the project.

Al Marar said that UAE-China collaboration on renewable energy will help ensure sustainability along the Belt and Road Initiative, which is an infrastructure and economic development plan proposed by China.

"These type of agreements and the ongoing meetings, research and benchmarking between the Department of Energy and Chinese companies is key to enhancing our cooperation in the renewable energy industry and allows us to share and explore opportunities and future expansion plans that would support China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Abu Dhabi’s sustainable development goals," Al Marar said.

The UAE continues to generate the majority of its energy through fossil fuels, though Al Marar said the nation is working hard to lessen its reliance on finite resources and ramp up solar capacity.

Through the sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi government set up a renewable energy and sustainable urban development company in 2006 called Masdar, which has developed nearly 5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity worldwide and invested $13.5 billion in green projects. In an earlier interview at ADSW, Masdar Chief Executive Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi confirmed to China Daily that the company is currently exploring investment opportunities in both China and along the Belt and Road regions.

Al Marar says China has played a major role in aiding the UAE’s pivot to solar.

"If you look at most of the solar panels on our grid you will see Made in China," he said. "China is focusing on getting away from coal and decreasing emissions. What China has been doing to adapt in terms of technology, research and production is spilling over to other countries including ours."

At the ADSW, the Deputy Director of China’s National Energy Administration Liu Baohua laid out the nation’s commitments to sustainable development. He said that non-fossil fuels would account for 15 percent of China’s energy mix by the end of this year-up from 14.7 percent in 2019-and rise to 20 percent by 2030.

"The Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of renewable energy and vigorously promotes the revolution in energy production and consumption," Liu said.

China continues efforts to eradicate waste imports

China will make an all-out effort to realize zero import of solid waste by the end of this year as it ramps up the upgrading of recycling companies and encourages them to turn to domestic alternatives, an environmental official said.

The country has banned the import of 56 types of waste since 2016, when it decided to phase out garbage imports amid challenges to disposal of its domestic waste. So far imports have declined by 71 percent, said Liu Youbin, spokesman for the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Almost 13.5 million metric tons of garbage was imported in 2019, down about 40 percent year-on-year, he said at a news conference on Friday.

He said the country has kept its high-hand posture to crack down on waste smuggling.

While the General Administration of Customs rolled out its third special campaign on garbage smuggling in 2019, the ministry launched a special campaign to crack down on environmental violations by companies that recycle imported wastes.

“All the measures have yielded positive results,” he said.

Liu also said the concerted efforts of different government bodies are expected to help transform many of the country’s small, disordered and polluting recycling companies.

While multiple government bodies have been proactively promoting garbage sorting and have unveiled preferential policies to encourage recycling of domestic solid waste, the ministry and the State Administration for Market Regulation made public three national standards to guide companies in their import of metal raw materials, he said.

Thanks to these policies, he added, “many of China’s major recycling companies that used to rely on import have shifted their focus to domestic market, and are accelerating their construction of collecting channels for waste paper.”

He also said the initiatives from these companies are expected to force many of the small, disordered and polluting companies to turn to scales that adhere to high-quality development.

'He could lose his career' – Former Chelsea wonderkid Musonda struggling to realise potential

The Belgian has been compared to Andres Iniesta but he has been blighted by injury problems, while questions have been raised about those advising him

It has been two years since Charly Musonda Jr last played for Chelsea, in a 4-0 win at Brighton. Back then, he was on top of the footballing world.

After some exciting cameos for the Blues, one of the club’s most promising young prospects had just been rewarded with a lucrative new contract and was looking forward to a loan move to Celtic.

Unfortunately, not much has gone right for Musonda in the interim. The 23-year-old made just three competitive starts for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, the last of which came on February 18, 2018, against St Johnstone.

Now, he is the middle of his second loan spell at Vitesse, but he has been restricted to just four Eredivisie appearances for the Dutch side – all as a substitute.

Chelsea had been unsurprisingly disappointed with Musonda’s lack of game time in Scotland and carefully considered the numerous offers they received for the Belgian’s services. In the end, they felt he would be best served by a move to their feeder club.

However, Musonda suffered a shin injury in his first friendly match for Vitesse. It was initially thought to be only a minor problem but he ended up having to deal with a succession of setbacks and his only appearance during the 2018-19 campaign came on the final matchday.

He has managed three further substitute appearances this term but the sad reality is that he has spent more time at Cobham Training Centre than at his loan club, with his mother driving him in and out for treatment on what Chelsea now fear is a chronic knee injury.

“The last year has been the toughest of my life,” Musonda told The Independent. “I’ve suffered a lot this year. Sometimes, it can get very lonely.

“Every morning I woke up with the same thought: to play. It’s only when it’s taken away that you understand how much you love football. I didn’t realise how much I could miss it.”

Along with his persistent injury issues, multiple sources have told Goal that they are also concerned Musonda has taken bad advice from his support network in the past.

These claims are hard to verify but there were issues with Gus Poyet during their time working together during Musonda’s loan spell at Real Betis.

“I think he has terrific ability and he has something very hard to find in football, which is speed,” the Chelsea legend told Goal. “This is a strong opinion but I am not worried to say it: Charly has to change his way of thinking about football. He has to decide by himself what he wants to do.

“If he still thinks he is the young kid with some ability, then he will lose his career. I know Charly a little bit and I tried to sign him [permanently at Betis]. Then, we had some problems and the manager gets the blame. But you need to make decisions for yourself and forget anyone around you.

“You need to put your head down and say, ‘I want to be the player I can be’. If you can’t do that, it isn’t going to work. He is a player who can attack people one-versus-one and really go past people. He can make chances continually.

“If he is in an area where he can receive the ball and attack the full-back constantly, then you have problems, because he can go past you.”

Musonda initially joined Betis on a six-month loan in January 2016 and he immediately impressed in La Liga, providing the imagination in midfield for Juan Merino’s side.

However, even though he returned to the Benito Villamarin at the start of the following campaign, Musonda struggled under Merino’s successor, Poyet, who had taken over in May.

The Uruguayan was sacked himself that November and succeeded at the helm by Victor Sanchez but Musonda made just one appearance under the new coach, and his time at Betis was cut short in January 2017.

Roma offered to take him on loan but Chelsea feared that he would spend his time at the Stadio Olimpico warming the bench.

In hindsight, it may have been a better option for Musonda than Celtic, with his development having been seriously stunted by injuries and poor moves.

Yannick Ferrera is convinced that Musonda can still make it to the top of the game, however.

Ferrera, who is now in charge of Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Fateh, worked with Musonda at under-age level at Anderlecht and despite having also mentored the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Michy Batshuayi and Adnan Januzaj, he is adamant that the Brussels native was the best of the lot.

“When we played in European tournaments and stuff everyone was crazy about him,” Ferrera told Goal. “He almost won the best player trophy at every tournament that he went to. The whole of Europe knew him already.

“A lot of teams wanted him and kept speaking to his family to sign him. We couldn’t hide him. He was too good to hide. He has always been my favourite. He was the player I liked the most and the most talented I have ever coached.

“Honestly, when I saw him when he was 10 or 11 years old, I thought, ‘This is a player who will be among the top five in the world. He is going to be like Iniesta or something’. I rated him that highly and I never thought that about anyone else I trained.

“First of all, he was really gifted technically. The most impressive thing with him was his vision and maturity. At 10 years old, he played like a 30-year-old guy who was already a professional. He had calm, experience and leadership that you just don’t see in a kid.

“I have never seen this ever since. At some point, he made a choice with his family to move to Chelsea. After that, he did well at Betis. Then, he went to Vitesse and Celtic and he has been injured. He is injured again now.

“But I keep believing in him. I still believe he can be one of the game’s biggest players. Just because he is 23, it isn’t too late. His talent is still there. His vision is still there. He needs some luck with injuries, the right team and coach.

“He needs one or two years of football. Then people will see that he was not only a rising star that never made it. I am sure he will still make it. I believe that.”

Chelsea have always believed in Musonda, from the first day their scouts set sights on him. It was why they went out of their way to beat Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Manchester City to sign him.

Musonda is the kind of player that fans are happy to pay to watch. Neutrals should be wishing him well in his bid to kickstart his career.

He needs some long overdue good fortune but, ultimately, it may be all down to Musonda himself and whether he’s willing to do everything required to finally realise his undoubted potential.

Chelsea boss Lampard cautions against 'knee-jerk reaction' signings in January

The Blues have failed to progress any talks during the transfer window thus far and their manager insists he is comfortable with the status quo

Frank Lampard is ready to compete for a spot in next season’s Champions League without any January signings if he has to, and has warned the club against ‘knee-jerk’ additions.

Chelsea were able to get FIFA’s transfer ban halved through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but they have struggled to make progress in any talks.

The January transfer market has been difficult for all Premier League clubs with just 12 deals completed across the league, five of which have been loans.

Despite Chelsea’s available funds, Lampard admits that he would consider doing a short-term deal during this transfer window and is also prepared to see no business done.

“I think I should be because that’s where we’re at at the moment,” Lampard said of whether he will be happy if Chelsea don’t sign anyone. “If it feels right for us, then we’ll do it.”

Some recent last-minute January deals have not worked out well, with the likes of Alexandre Pato and Gonzalo Higuain struggling while on loan.

Lampard was careful not to be critical of business done in the past, but admitted he doesn’t want to enter the market for just anyone after a positive season so far.

“The players you mentioned there were top players. I think the idea of January being a time to buy players, it’s difficult for everybody – for players coming in, especially if they’re coming from a different league, for the club and for the settlement of the group,” the Chelsea manager added.

“I think that’s why we have to think ultra carefully and I do care and consider the club and where we’re going. I don’t want to make some knee-jerk reaction to say ‘here’s my first big signing’ because we couldn’t sign anyone in the summer.

“No, I want to do the right thing for the club. That’s why if I do it I’ll try and consider all things. It will always be in communication with the club. Hopefully, it’s the best thing for us. Whether that’s more of a short-term option or a long-term option, we’ll also have to consider.”

Chelsea now prepare to face Newcastle United on Saturday without Christian Pulisic and Marcos Alonso, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains on the long-term injured list. The midfielder has begun training with the Blues U16 team, however.

N’Golo Kante was held out of Chelsea’s win over Burnley last weekend and Lampard says he is unsure whether the Frenchman will return at St. James’ Park.

“Yes, he’s had a few issues through the week. When I say yes, I think it’s a decision I have to make with absolute certainty but at the minute it looks like he’s good to go.”

Ross Barkley replaced Kante after he pulled himself out of contention last weekend at the last minute due to tightness in his hamstring. The England international impressed as he returns from injury and Lampard has dismissed speculation that he will go out on loan to West Ham.

The speculation that Barkley could leave Chelsea comes amid a backdrop of two off-field incidents where he was filmed in embarrassing situations in his personal life, with the video then sold to newspapers.

Lampard says he wants his players to enjoy life and has moved on from Barkley’s misdemeanours.

“The good thing about being a boss is you don’t have to talk about all your things back in the day! Mind you, you can probably Google it,” Lampard joked about his own off-field problems as a player.

“What I will say is there are two sides to it and I read Ross’s statements.

“The first side is you should always look at yourself and I always said that about myself when I got it wrong. So look at yourself and don’t mention about anything else because society and members of the public you can’t control.

“The second side, I agree with, there are too many smartphones but that’s the second part of the argument because we are all so aware that there are a lot of smartphones so we are aware we have to change your way of living.

“How much you trust the people you are around, your friends, all these things, unfortunately, or whatever, that’s the way the world has gone.

“I think you still come back to yourself and make sure you firstly act professionally and secondly be aware of those things because you can’t control the fact that the world has changed.

“I think we went to Lille when I got asked about that, my biggest concern was not really the bag of chips it was more the fact that we were training the next day.

“That is exactly where I see it and Ross knows that and I am not one to tell my lads don’t have a bag of chips, don’t have a few beers after you win a game.

“Just make sure that when you think about the big scheme, you do it with the idea you have to train and perform at a level and as the game has moved forward and the speed and intensity of it even more so from my day, from eras gone by, the players have to be absolutely tip-top or this game will find you out.

“That’s not just a thing to Ross that is to all the players about how they live their life.”

Inter eye €10m deal for Chelsea outcast Moses after Politano-Spinazzola swap deal is called off

Nerazzurri boss Antonio Conte is eager to reunite with the Nigerian full-back at San Siro as he continues to strengthen his squad in the winter window

Inter have set their sights on Chelsea defender Victor Moses after a proposed exchange deal involving Matteo Politano and Roma’s Leonardo Spinazzola failed to materialise.

Politano and Spinazzola had both reportedly undergone medicals this week, but negotiations fell through at the last minute.

The Nerazzurri had initially committed to signing Spinazzola on loan with the obligation to make the move permanent at the end of the season, but attempted to change the terms of the agreement so that only an option to buy was included.

The two clubs failed to reach a final compromise and the deal has been abandoned as a result, with Roma looking to move on to alternative targets quickly as they aim to bring in cover for the injured Nicolo Zaniolo.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte is still determined to add another left-back to his ranks, and he has already asked Inter to make a move for Chelsea’s Moses.

The 29-year-old was sent out on loan to Fenerbahce for the 2019-20 season after falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, but he was a regular in the team during Conte’s two-year spell at the club.

Goal has learned that Chelsea are likely to demand €10 million (£9m/$11m) for Moses, who has returned to west London for a sit down with the club and his representatives.

Blues striker Olivier Giroud is also thought to be closing in on a move to San Siro, and is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Italian club after agreeing on personal terms.

However, talks with the Frenchman are likely to stall after Inter’s setback with Roma, as they now look to negotiate an additional deal for Moses.

The Nerazzurri have already wrapped up a transfer for one Premier League star this month, with Manchester United defender Ashley Young arriving in Milan on Friday ahead of a €1.5 million switch.

Conte admitted earlier this week that Inter are short on funds, but they are attempting to arrange a number of cut-price deals in order to boost their Serie A title bid.

It has been reported that Inter have also tabled a £13 million ($17m) bid for Christian Eriksen, but Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that he is unaware of such an offer.

Meanwhile, Conte is currently preparing his squad for a crucial meeting with Leece in the Italian top flight on Sunday, as they look to close the two-point gap on league leaders Juventus.

What is Xavi's net worth and how much does the Al-Sadd manager earn?

The Barcelona and Spain legend has now taken the reins of Qatar Super League side Al-Sadd – so how much is he worth?

Xavi has built a legacy as one of Barcelona’s most beloved former players, the ex-midfielder embodying the style of “tiki-taka” and earning a reputation as one of the greatest ever passers of the ball.

The former Spain international enjoyed a highly successful and trophy-laden time at Camp Nou, where he formed a prolific partnership with Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.

Having joined Barcelona’s youth academy La Masia at age 11 and spending the majority of his senior career in Catalonia, Xavi left the Spanish club in 2015 to join Qatar Stars League club Al-Sadd.

Xavi was appointed manager of the Qatar side in 2019 after retiring at the end of the season, though he has made no secret that it is his ultimate dream to eventually coach Barcelona.

But just how much is the Barcelona legend and current Al Sadd boss worth? Goal takes a look.

  1. What is Xavi’s net worth?
  2. How much does Xavi earn?
  3. What sponsorship deals does Xavi have?
  4. What charity work does Xavi do?

What is Xavi’s net worth?

Xavi has an accumulated net worth of roughly €35 million (£30m), according to Celebrity Net Worth.

This wealth has been accumulated primarily through his playing days at Barcelona and Al-Sadd, as well as his managerial role now at the Qatar Stars League side.

How much does Xavi earn?

The ex-Spain international earned annual salary of €10m (£8.5m) when he was playing for Al-Sadd as a player according to AS, which is likely to have risen since taking on coaching and managerial duties.

What sponsorship deals does Xavi have?

Xavi has dabbled in numerous endorsement deals throughout his playing career, and now managerial career.

He was named the brand ambassador of Audi Qatar, the Qatari division of the German car manufacturer.

The decorated ex-Barcelona superstar also maintains a sponsorship deal with Adidas, previously starring in numerous adverts with the likes of Messi, Luis Suarez and Robin van Persie.

He has also featured heavily in FIFA games along the years, and also appeared in EA Sports’ FIFA “11 against Ebola” initiative that involved a handful of top-class footballers. He appeared alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar to raise awareness of the disease, with the campaign done in tandem with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and health experts on the crisis.

What charity work does Xavi do?

Xavi’s philanthropy has stretched across work with refugees, the Red Cross and other humanitarian endeavours.

When Xavi was awarded a cheque of €100,000 by UEFA after being named captain of the UEFA.com users’ Team of the Year in 2011, he donated the money to the ICRC for the Red Cross’ physical rehabilitation program in Afghanistan.

“It’s an honour to be part of the team and also to be captain,” said Xavi at the time.

“It’s an honour to represent European and world football, and in this case we are helping people who are more vulnerable and who need it – so I am proud in that sense.

“It is very important to help. We are privileged people in society. We have it good, through living our passion. It’s a profession of course but it’s also a hobby and a passion. So to be able to help people who need it, it’s a beautiful cause and I feel very proud.”

He has also done work with aiding refugees. Xavi donated his private yacht to the NGO Proactive Open Arms, a charity organisation based in Barcelona aimed at rescuing those who have migrated by means of sea, having set up their headquarters on the Greek island of Lesbos.

The charity has aided in saving more than 3,000 refugees close to the Libya coastline.

‘Clever’ Ads About Harry And Meghan’s Move To Canada Show Next-Level Thirst

TORONTO — A picturesque escape from the family. A part-time job at a fast-food restaurant. A lead role in The Real Housewives. A low mortgage rate.

Harry and Meghan already have a wide and at times peculiar range of options for when they move to Canada, at least according to the many advertisements that have sprung up in recent days.

Companies in Canada and the U.S. have seized on the momentum of the royal couple’s break from tradition — from a B.C. public relations firm to Burger King to Expedia.

Last week Harry and Meghan announced they are stepping down as senior royals and wish to become financially independent, and the Queen confirmed Monday they will be living in Canada part time.

It’s a series of events that has captured the world’s attention, translating to low-hanging fruit for brands that want to get some extra attention, say experts.

“Brands are attaching themselves to Harry and Meghan as a kind of joke, wink wink,” said Monica LaBarge, a marketing professor at Queen’s University.

“It’s a function of the social media landscape where they have to keep generating new content and (in this case) there’s not a lot of risk or strategizing.”

Jelly Digital Marketing and PR, a firm based in Fort Langley, B.C., contacted HuffPost Canada with the announcement it had offered a job and guided tour to Meghan.

“At the very least we invite you to stop in for a visit at our office in historic Fort Langley, meet the team, and let us show you around the town. It would be an ‘honour’ to have you,” it said in an online statement.

The royal drama is a catchy, relatively lighthearted topic after a barrage of bad news including the Iran plane downing, Australian wildfires disaster, and U.S. impeachment, said LaBarge.

Are the offers a tad desperate? It’s up to their customers to decide, said strategic communications expert Arleigh Vasconcellos, founder and managing director of The Agency.

“If they’re going to do something they know their customers are going to love? Great, all the power to them,” she said.

For the most part people seem receptive to the fun, creative approach.

Canadian bank HSBC ran a half-page newspaper ad Friday that read: “Dear Harry & Meghan, Welcome to Canada! We invite you to apply for one of Canada’s lowest mortgage rates. Cheerio!”

The advertisement is clever and takes advantage of Harry and Meghan’s positive brand, said marketing expert David Soberman, a University of Toronto professor. It also exemplifies how companies have to stay within certain legal parameters to avoid lawsuits.

“There’s a limit to how far you can go,” Soberman told HuffPost Canada. “You can’t make statements that are misleading. You also can’t use their likeness in advertising.”

As Harry and Meghan’s personal brand evolves as they perhaps become more involved in social causes, their response to different advertisements may change.

“A company trying to sell mortgages may get a different reaction than an organization trying to offer better education,” Soberman said.

Other groups that have taken advantage of their decision include the South Wales Police.

And Ikea Italy, whose Instagram ad translated to English says, “Meghan, Harry. We understand you. We are made to change.” It includes the caption: “Moving is a real effort for everyone.”

The exception, of course, is the Tim Hortons tweet offering Harry and Meghan free coffee for life, which faced backlash in light of its labour disputes.

However, that’s more related to Canadians’ growing disdain for the brand — the “current whipping boy” for a lot of people, said LaBarage.

But for Tim Hortons, the reach the tweet got on social media probably made it worth it, even in the unlikely event Harry and Meghan take them up on the offer.

'20th Century Studios': Disney Drops 'Fox' From Marquee Names

Disney is dropping the word “Fox” from the names of the iconic movie studios it bought from Rupert Murdoch’s Twenty-First Century Fox Inc., according to news reports.

The company paid US$71.3 billion in 2018 for a controlling share of the 20th Century Fox film and TV studios, but it didn’t buy Murdoch’s broadcast divisions, including the Fox TV network and Fox News.

Watch: Disney grosses more than $10 billion in 2019. Story continues below.

20th Century Fox will be known as 20th Century Studios and Fox Searchlight Pictures will be renamed Searchlight Pictures, Variety reported on Friday. The TV studios, which Disney also owns ― 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 Television Studios ― will not be renamed as yet, the magazine reported.

Disney doesn’t want there to be confusion between its brands and Fox Corp., the company that now owns Fox News and the Fox TV network, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a “person familiar with the matter.”

The famous 20th Century Fox logo will remain the same, except without the word ‘Fox’ in it, Variety reported.
